USY and Kadima News

The first USY “Bring Your Own Percussion”Friday night service and Chanukah

celebration was a lot of fun. Eleven kidsgathered around using shakers, bongos, andvarious percussion instruments toaccompany the prayers and songs. It was areally invigorating and spiritual experience. We will definitely make it an annual event.

Four kids actively participated in the USYInternational Convention in downtownChicago, and they all had a great time. Thisis what Jessica Shankman had to say aboutit,“I had an incredible time meeting newpeople and making stronger ties with thoseI had met before and wish that I was stillthere now. It deepened my understandingof the importance of having a Jewishcommunity to keep with, and I miss it somuch!”

February Anniversaries

People ask,“Is the PopeCatholic?” as if it’s a no-brainer,but I’m not certain. I presumethat the Pope is Catholic. I’m

pretty sure that most of the Popes, maybe allof them, were. But I don’t know. I’m noteven certain what the question means. Howdo you tell whether someone is Catholic? The answer is beyond me.

It’s the same with,“Does the rabbi keepkosher?” The answer is, absolutely. As muchas the pope is Catholic. Which he probably is.

Obviously, the question can be clarified. Therabbi is kosher by whose standards? Well, inour case, by Conservative standards. Okay,by which Conservative standards? Why, byhis own. Are you glad now that I clearedthat up?

I am strictly kosher by my own standards, but on those there is controversy. Forinstance, according to the LubavitcherChasidim I am not kosher. Neither, by theirstandards, are the Satmar Chasidim.Neither, for that matter, is the OU (which isthe Orthodox Union, whose mark is theletter U inside a circle). Lubavitch is verystrict, and if a non-Jew milks a cow then theywon’t drink the milk. (That rule is calledcholov yisro’el.) No Lubavitcher Chasid willeat at our shul unless he brings his ownfood.

But, within standards that can be justifiedthrough the Talmud and the law codes, ourkitchen is strictly kosher. It has to be,because those who use our kitchen areresponsible not just for themselves but foreveryone who comes to our events. A friendonce told me, “I’ve eaten treif [non-kosher]only twice in my life, and both times were atsynagogue events that were labeledkosher.” We can’t allow that to happen inour shul. When we announce that ourkitchen is kosher, it’s a promise, and ourword must be good.

On the other hand,my personal kashrut, outside of the shul, is perhaps not all thatstrict. I do eat dairy in non-kosherrestaurants (with three exceptions, aboutwhich more below).

There exist Conservative opinions thatpermit this as being perfectly kosher withina strict reading of the rules, and I’m glad thatwe have those opinions. But that’s not why Ido it. Other opinions, just as Conservative, argue that for a Jew to eat in those places iswrong. If the law follows that view, then Ihaven’t gotten there yet, and I’ll still eat withyou in a regular Elgin restaurant. But eitherway, it’s not like eating in a kosher place, andif you were to say to me,“You know, let’s dobetter than this. Do you mind if we travel toSkokie?” then I’d take off my hat, uncover myyarmulke, and thank you for the chance.

From the Rabbi’s Study...

I’ll also eat in anyone’s house, and I won’tdemand of their kitchens more than Idemand of a restaurant. That means that I’lleat dairy (or kosher meat), and I won’tconcern myself with the dishes as I would inthe synagogue kitchen or in my own house.

There is one difference, though, for me,between eating in someone’s home and in arestaurant, and that is when we areconducting any kind of official synagoguemeeting.

For a meeting in someone’s home, there’s noproblem, and my rules are the same as forany other time. We can order pizza orChinese food or whatever our host chooses. It doesn’t matter, because it’s a privatemeeting and everyone there knows what’sgoing on.

But when we conduct synagogue businessin a restaurant, then I take nothing at all toeat or drink, not even a glass of water, andthe reason is because of the yarmulke that Iwear.

In an ordinary restaurant, I cover myyarmulke with a hat. If I didn’t, then peoplemight think,“That religious Jew eats treif.”Orworse, they might think,“This place must bekosher.” So I eat dairy in ordinary restaurants, and I wear a hat.

But at a synagogue meeting, does the hatmake sense? In my capacity as rabbi of ashul, should I not show my yarmulke anddress as a Jew? And let’s say that I hid theyarmulke. It would make no difference, because we’re still conducting officialbusiness. The restaurant staff, at least, knowsthat, and they’ll probably also learn that I’mthe synagogue’s rabbi. At those times I don’twant people to say,“What kind of rabbi isthis? What kind of synagogue?” In someone’shome everyone knows just what’s going on,but in a treif restaurant the yarmulke gives avery strange impression. My choice, then, isto either pretend that we’re not asynagogue or not eat. I choose not to eat.

Incidentally, if I’m in a town where everyoneknows who I am, then it also makes nodifference whether or not I cover theyarmulke. When I lived in small towns, Istayed away from local restaurants.

I’ve mentioned two exceptions to my policyof eating in non-kosher restaurants. (Mypolicy for eating in people’s homes has noexception.) A third involves eating in oneparticular type of restaurant: the kind thatcalls itself “kosher style.”

In order to explain the special status ofthese restaurants, I often tell a story aboutthe unique place of honor that we give tothe pig, far beyond any other forbiddenanimal. The pig has its own special ruleabout it in the Torah. Kosher beasts have tohave cloven hooves and chew their cud.

One of these traits without the other doesn’tsuffice; a kosher beast has to have both.

Now, if the Torah just gave us the rule aboutcloven hooves, then the resulting list ofkosher animals would be exactly the sameas it is now, except for the addition of thepig. The extra requirement of chewing thecud (called “ruminating”) does nothing at allto the list of kosher animals except removethe pig.

The pig is the only treif animal with clovenhooves. It can raise its trotter as if to say,“Look at me. See? I’m kosher.” But we knowbetter, because we know something aboutthe pig inside. It has a secret. It lookskosher, but it isn’t.

Do you know what we call something thatlooks kosher and isn’t?

We call it kosher style.

Of such a restaurant, I won’t even passthrough the door.

We recall with loving memory those whose yahrtzeiten are commemoratedduring the coming weeks, and those whose names are read in theSynagogue at Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat servicesduring the month of February. It is appropriate for members of theirfamilies to be present when these names are read.

There are two dates listed above on our yahrtzeit list. The first is the day of the service at which the name is read. The second is the actual date of the yahrtzeit, and memorialcandles should be lit on the preceding evening. An asterisk aftera name indicates that a plaque is affixed to the Memorial Tablet.
