What matters to you?

Professor: Marty Lee, PhDTeaches: ForestryExpertise: Wildland recreation management on the

Colorado PlateauAt NAU: Since 1990Recently: Given a major grant from the National Park

Service to identify ways to prevent theftat the Petrified Forest National Park.

“What matters to me is how you learn

here—small classes, lots of team-teaching,

field experiences on amazing public lands.

It’s an incredibly powerful combination.”

School of Forestry Professor Marty Lee contributes to our understanding of the

benefits of leisure activity in wildland recreation settings. Her findings help

federal land managers define recreational objectives that both preserve our

wilderness and provide access for future generations to enjoy.

Named 2005-2006 Consortium of Professional Schools Teacher of the

Year, Lee turns her students loose to play a role in wildland management.

Last spring, her students worked with the U.S. Forest Service to develop

an educational program that reduces mechanized recreation intrusions in

designated wilderness. Her students designed an educational poster which

became the model for posters the Forest Service will place at trailheads.

As coordinator of NAU’s American Democracy Project, Lee plans events that

challenge students to engage in civic activity. She holds a PhD from Oregon

State University.
