Resume ofRobert M. Holman

2501 East Magnolia StreetPhoenix, AZ

602/722-2026

Objective:

To obtain a career opportunity with a company that allows me to utilize my vast hospitality industry knowledge ob tained from at tend ing the HSMAI monthly meet ings and web-inar training sessions; my leadership skills derived from participation on var i ous com mit tees and in roles as Com mit tee Chair, Board Member and Pres i dent; and my ex ten sive resources and contact list to increase the in ter est ed companies bottom-line.

It may be time to update my resume … I heard at a recent mem ber ship committee meet ing that HSMAI is still perceived by prospects and/or their man-agers as a forum for job seekers. We could try to change this per cep tion, but the reality of our mem ber ship is that we create networking and career advance-ment op por tu ni ties. If mem bers make job changes as a result of our programs, it’s a credit to our success. But I don’t think man ag ers are re luc tant to join HSMAI for fear of loosing employees. Their real concern is ROI – return on investment. What are they getting in return for the time in vest ment. We need to do a better job promoting the value of our ed u ca tion al programs, resources and lead er ship training. The HSMAI Arizona Chapter Past Presidents Council recently sent a letter to the General Manager or Director of Sales at non-member properties to en- cour age their par tic i pa tion. In the letter, they addressed some of the ed u ca tion al sales tools like the eConnect Resource, HSMAI University and Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The following is an excerpt from the letter that de scribes the SIGs: HSMAI, as the world’s largest sales and marketing association, has a di-verse membership of sales and marketing professionals from hotels, con ven tion and visitors bu reaus, attractions, destination marketing or ga ni za tions, cruise lines, airlines, rental car agencies and industry service pro vid ers, etc. To ensure we continue to provide the right relevancy to our members, HSMAI recently in tro duced a new acronym - the “SIG”, or the Special Interest Group. Over the past year, HSMAI has developed “SIGs” in Hotel Internet Mar- ket ing, Cruise Internet Marketing, Revenue Management, Resort Mar ket ing and just launched a new “SIG” for Hotel Directors of Sales & Mar ket ing. Each of these “SIG” groups is lead by a Chairperson who is supported by a selected ad-visory board, a variety of mission focused com mit tees, and a

project manager. The “SIG’s” all have a ded i cat ed web-site within the HSMAI.org site, quarterly E-news let ters, and an annual strategy con fer ence. The content for the website, the E-news let ters and the strategy con fer ence are developed by the advisory boards and com mit tees at the direction of the “SIG” Chair. Online in each area’s website is a daily news feed of specifi c subject press releases, and links to an impressive list of new re search, ar- ti cles, and books. Also online are industry expert interviews and a updated calendar of industry events. The ob jec tive is to provide more specifi c in for ma tion and research for each special interest area. You can help the Membership Committee and the Past Presidents Council spread the word that there’s more going on then job pros pect ing. Invite your business colleagues and associates to go to the Arizona Chapter website (www.hsmai-az.org) and review the resources section (www.hsmai-az.org/resources.htm). If that doesn’t work, we’ll have to wait till they need a job.

SCC Flip Flop Drive

Dear Students, Friends and Colleagues:

Thank you for your participation and support with SCC’s fl ip-fl op drive for Hope 4 Kids International. I will tell you when we committed to collect 500 pair of fl ip-fl ops I wasn’t sure we could do it! I underestimated the kindness of the human spirit. After a little media coverage all kinds of people from our community went out of their way to help; schools, churches, major companies, doctor’s offi ces and small business own ers. Most of the fl ip-fl ops will be going to Ugandan orphans, however due to the success of this campaign some will also be going to Peru this June as well. So how many pair of fl ip-fl ops did we collect? 5,874 with more on the way! We also collected over $ 3,600.00 in monetary do na -tions for H4KI! Special Thanks to:

For those of you that have shared your time volunteering with us in the past, I invite you to come and take another look at our facility, during this incredible time of transition and growth. With the impending addition of our new Skilled Nursing Facility, the physical landscape changes as each day passes. One thing that does not change is our need for new volunteers. Please join us as a volunteer: rock a baby, read to a child or adult, visit and spend time with individuals who may not have family involvement, help us with arts and crafts, or organize a team building vol un teer project with your col-

Make A Difference Day 2006by Sandy Rimmer

In late March, seven eager vol un teers from HSMAI and MPI arrived at the Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion, rolled up our collective sleeves, and went to work. Our Mission was twofold. To clear out the rocks that had been washed into the east pasture by recent rains and to prevent that from happening in future. Nancy Blabe, AZ Humane Society volunteer co or -di na tor, had a plan – as we picked up the rocks and tossed them into buckets, she would come round on a tractor with a trailer to collect them. With the able assistance of Ri ch ard Carmer they would build “the great wall of the Arizona Humane Society”…… Well, actually, “the wall” was about a foot tall, BUT it stretched along the back fence where the run off from the rains was causing erosion; thus, rocks were washing down into the pasture. “The wall”, built by our team, should stop the erosion and ensure that the horses will not harm themselves when walking or running in the pasture. We had allotted four hours for the task. We fi nished in three. Way to go team!!

Bryson, a resident at Hacienda's Skilled Nursing Facility. He wants to share his phone with you!

Spe cial thanks to Cheryl Street, who never goes anywhere without her digital camera, to Deliah Rose who en cour aged her friends, Sarah and Nikki, to volunteer, to “digger Diane Grambo” (you had to be there to witness the fancy footwork with those work boots!), and last but not least Richard Carmer, building his own version of the Great Wall of China!" Best of all, the horses wish you a thousand whinnies of appreciation!

Lies for Being Late A new survey by CareerBuilder.com found that 13 per-cent of workers say they arrive late to work at least once a week and 24 percent say they arrive late at least once a month. One-in-fi ve admit to lying to explain their tardi-ness. The CareerBuilder.com survey, "Late to Work," was conducted from February 21 to March 6 and sampled more than 2,500 workers. Not surprising, Monday is the most popular day for late arrivals, according to 64 percent of hiring man ag ers. While the majority of hiring managers don’t typically question the validity of the reasons provided, 35 percent say most of the time they don’t believe the excuses. The survey also revealed hiring managers’ top 10 most unusual excuses employees have offered for arriving late to work.

1. I dreamed that I was fi red, so I didn’t bother to get out of bed.2. I had to take my cat to the dentist.3. I went all the way to the offi ce and realized I was still in my pajamas and had to go home to change.4. I saw that you weren’t in the offi ce, so I went out looking for you.5. I couldn’t fi nd the right tie, so I had to wait for the stores to open so I could buy one.6. My son tried to fl ush our ferret down the toilet and I needed to tend to the ferret.7. I ran over a goat.8. I stopped for a bagel sandwich, the store was robbed and the police required everyone to stay for question ing.9. A bee fl ew in my car and attacked me and I had to pull over.10. I wet my pants and went home to change.

OK…the General Session is about to begin and your AV staff is on the edge of hysteria…they don’t have up-to-date Power Points for the next four speak ers and have fi ve min-ute to make all the adjustments and updates for the speak-ers who have just walked-in with many “simple” requests. Want to help out your Pro duc tion Company and have a better meeting? Learn to get the following in their hands early…well before the show starts… Presenters Technical Requirements / Riders: Should be in our hands as soon as they are booked / scheduled…no later than three weeks before the event. Sooner would even be better to avoid any last minute equipment additions or expenses for the client. Images/Photos for Projection: jpeg’s will work but, suggest the largest picture available. If the images are sent one by one, we need a list ..and make sure they are identi-fi ed. Video: Prefer Beta/DV over VHS/DVD but will accept all of them. Please know the VHS & DVD are consumer for-mats not professional formats and DVD’s have the potential to freeze. There are hundreds of DVD burners with limited compatibility so be careful of relying on DVD’s for profes-sional presentations. Logos: Need to be eps or ai fi les if available, large scale jpegs if eps or ai fi les are not available. Music: If you have theme songs or music related to your presentation please forward in advance. PowerPoint: We need this at least the day before your presentation. It needs to be titled with your name and company and accompanied by a printed slide by slide out-line of your presentation. If you give us your pre sen ta tion on a thumb drive, please have the fi le properly iden ti fi ed. Projected slides are a good medium for depicting an idea graphically or providing an overview. They are a poor me-dium for detail and reading. Limit your slides to fi ve lines of text and use words and phrases to make your points. The audience will be able to digest and retain key points more easily. Don’t use your slides as speaker’s notes or to simply project an outline of your presentation. Rehearsals: Want a good show? Then schedule re hears als. Rehearsals should be done at a minimum the day before each presentation. Rehearsals are the drill and practice session needed for a smooth show…they them selves are not perfect. The rehearsal needs to include in-person presentation and technical aspects. Backup: Backup…backup and more backup. Meres-tone should receive the show ready master and backup of

Some Tips To Help You and Your Production CompanyBy Camille Hill and Lynne Wellish, CMP, Merestone

everything you will be presenting. Then another burned CD / tapes of all images and video needed for the event should be brought to the event as backup. HSMAI mem bers have a golden op por tu ni ty to learn more about pre sen ta tion tech nol o gy and equip ment by at tend ing the upcoming Wor ship Resource and Ed u ca tion Conference Show at the Phoe nix Civic Plaza August 8 & 9, 2006. It will have a LIVE theater dem on strat ing all the equip ment and staffed with the man u fac tur ers to dis-cuss each product, a Trade Show, Speak ers and on the fi nal night a Jam Session in the Live Technology Show-room….a great con fer ence for all meeting plan ners, hotel sales people and industry related jobs, register at http://www.merestoneonline.com/

Consumer, competitor and pricing are the three key in-dustry trends that are affecting today’s forecasting and pric-ing strategies. We’ve conditioned our consumers to shop around through online and offl ine distribution chan nels in order to fi nd the best deal available to them. They know that it pays to do their research. The sixth annual KPMG Global Hotel Distribution Survey in 2005 found that only 1% of hotels are priced consistently across all chan nels. Today’s consumer expects to be treated the same regard-less of the way they booked so it’s im por tant for us to be con sis tent with our offers. “What matters most to people today is the idea of value, of getting the most for their budget at whatever level they are prepared to spend. People don’t nec es sar i ly want the lowest price; they want the maximum value for their travel dollar.” Phil Car pen ter, SideStep, Today’s Online Travel Consumer, Travel Professional, June/July 2004, Fred Gebhard. S.W.O.T. analysis plays a key role in helping us decipher what strengths and weaknesses our properties have. We need to look at how our competition is utilizing tech nol o gy, how the economy has affected travel, what changes are occurring in consumer be hav iors and what promotions are most effective.

Making The Most of Trends, Forecasting & PricingA March Meeting Recap by Sarah Bailey, Lake Powell Resorts & Ma ri nas

We are seeing large pricing variances across the board through all channels with best rates guarantees not nec es -sar i ly followed, selling by room type and volume discounts for corporate clients depending on the time of year. Dy- nam ic pricing models are becoming the norm and being utilized by corporations such as Marriott In ter na tion al and American Express. All of these factors help us manage our revenue and inventory. Robert Cross, Revenue Management, Hard Core Tactics for Market Domination defi nes revenue man- age ment as the following: “Revenue management is the art and science of predicting real time customer demand at the micro-level and op ti miz ing the price and availability of products.”

The revenue management cycle model is an excellent tool for gaining insight and knowledge on what’s working or not for your property and what key actions you can take to maximize revenue and product usage.

Many thanks to our presenter, Kathleen Cullen with In-spire Resources, to our friends at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel for hosting our breakfast meeting, to Eric Bahr, Bahr Pho tog ra phy for the photo memories, to Bill Johnson, CSP for the LCD pro jec tor and to Clark Rowley, RRP, Scottsdale Cam el back Resort, for hosting our NAU stu dents.
