2006 CONSTRUCTION SURVEY T he construction boom at the nation’s workboat-building yards shows no signs of slowing, with some yards booked up well into 2008. The building surge is evident in WorkBoat’s 2006 Construction Survey. This year’s survey included 55 yards with 786 vessels either delivered, under construction or under contract. That compares to 57 yards and 398 vessels contained in the 2005 survey. Part of the reason for the big jump in the number of vessels has to do with the $600 million, 180-boat contract for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Response Boat- Medium. At present, plans call for half of the RB-Ms to be built at Kvichak Marine Industries, Seattle, and the other half at Marinette Marine Corp., Marinette, Wis. Marinette Marine is the www.workboat.com FEBRUARY 2007 W ORKBOAT 52 lead contractor for the RB-M. The contract could eventually swell to 250 boats. The Coast Guard hopes to take delivery of the first RB-M late this year. Even without the RB-M contract, the remaining 600-plus vessels represent a jump of over 50 percent from 2005’s construction survey. The list of shipyards and vessels are compiled from survey material returned to us by the shipyards, boats reported on in WorkBoat over the past 12 months, and other sources. In most cases, lists from each individual ship- yard are complete. However, some yard entries contain only partial list of their backlogs. In some cases, customers do not want the shipyard to disclose them as a client. “I’d love to talk about what’s going on in our yard, but our clients don’t want any publicity,” said one yard gen- eral manager. “We have to respect their wishes.” High fuel and steel costs had less effect on new orders this year than over the past two years, the survey showed. The number of towboats/pushboats listed nearly doubled this year to 64 compared to 35 last year. The boom/spill response vessel total of 23 almost quadrupled from the six listed in the 2005 survey. Though rates for offshore service vessels showed some signs of softening over the past few months, orders for OSVs surged in this year’s survey. Last year, crew and crew/supply boats and personnel launches totaled 18. This year, the number rose to 30. There are 32 supply boats listed in this year’s survey compared to 21 last year. —Ken Hocke 10 3 28 30 32 11 64 60 7 23 104 114 26 4 23 243 200 300 Charter 4 POWERED VESSELS REPORTED FOR 2006 Total = 786 Newbuild and repair work is up for shipyards across the country, but personnel shortages continue to plague many yards.
