2006CONSTRUCTION SURVEY
The construction boom at thenation’s workboat-building yardsshows no signs of slowing, with
some yards booked up well into 2008.The building surge is evident in
WorkBoat’s 2006 Construction Survey. This year’s survey included 55 yardswith 786 vessels either delivered, underconstruction or under contract. Thatcompares to 57 yards and 398 vesselscontained in the 2005 survey.
Part of the reason for the big jump inthe number of vessels has to do with the$600 million, 180-boat contract for theU.S. Coast Guard’s Response Boat-Medium. At present, plans call for halfof the RB-Ms to be built at KvichakMarine Industries, Seattle, and theother half at Marinette Marine Corp.,Marinette, Wis. Marinette Marine is the

lead contractor for the RB-M.The contract could eventually swell
to 250 boats. The Coast Guard hopes totake delivery of the first RB-M late thisyear.
Even without the RB-M contract, theremaining 600-plus vessels represent ajump of over 50 percent from 2005’sconstruction survey.
The list of shipyards and vessels arecompiled from survey material returnedto us by the shipyards, boats reportedon in WorkBoat over the past 12months, and other sources. In mostcases, lists from each individual ship-yard are complete. However, some yardentries contain only partial list of theirbacklogs. In some cases, customers donot want the shipyard to disclose themas a client.
“I’d love to talk about what’s goingon in our yard, but our clients don’twant any publicity,” said one yard gen-eral manager. “We have to respect theirwishes.”
High fuel and steel costs had lesseffect on new orders this year than overthe past two years, the survey showed.
The number of towboats/pushboatslisted nearly doubled this year to 64compared to 35 last year. Theboom/spill response vessel total of 23almost quadrupled from the six listed inthe 2005 survey.
Though rates for offshore servicevessels showed some signs of softeningover the past few months, orders forOSVs surged in this year’s survey.
Last year, crew and crew/supplyboats and personnel launches totaled18. This year, the number rose to 30.There are 32 supply boats listed in thisyear’s survey compared to 21 last year.
