The Basilica of St. Francis Xavier (the Old Cathedral) was founded in 1732 and served as the Cathedral for the Dioceseof Vincennes. It is the oldest parish in the diocese. On July 1, 2016, Sacred Heart, St. John the Baptist, St. Thomas theApostle and St. Vincent de Paul parishes merged with St. Francis Xavier to form the current St. Francis Xavier Parish. St.Francis Xavier Parish operates Flaget Elementary and Rivet Middle & High School. Rivet is located at St. Francis XavierCampus. The parish is part of the North Deanery.

It was the site of a seminary in theearly years of the Diocese of Vincennes, and of the St. Vincent Orphanage, which closed in 1972.
