It was an exciting and fulfilling year at Camp Fire USA. In September we moved into a larger, more efficient and cost-effective administrative office that will provide long-term stability for our core programs. We are deeply grateful to all who helped make this move possible, and would especially like to thank Steve Fishback and Don McClintock, who served as true stewards for this project.

Growth also occurred in Camp Fire’s programs. A new collaboration with Central Lutheran Church, the Municipality of Anchorage and ML&P resulted in a new community center program in the West Fairview neighborhood at Central Lutheran Church. A new school age child care program started at Polaris K-12. We completed a second year of working with Anchorage middle school students through our service learning program, helping them gain a greater awareness and sense of community through initiating, planning and executing service projects. Camp Fire visited 15 rural villages in 2006, providing swimming and cold-water survival training to more than 700 youth. Our day camp, Camp Si La Meo served a record number of youth through the summer with diverse programs that taught canoeing, swimming, and many other skills. Camp Kushtaka continues to provide the only residential, co-ed, non sectarian camp accredited by the American Camp Association in Alaska. Groups of dedicated volunteers deserve special thanks for their efforts to maintain and improve our beautiful location on Kenai Lake.

We are proud to continue the work of building caring, confident youth and future leaders. And we are thankful for the many partnerships we enjoy with individuals, families, organizations, and our community. It is through this support that Camp Fire continues to thrive.

School Age Child Care ProgramLicensed school age child care programs help working families and keep kids safe while providing them with learning experiences and meaningful opportunities for involvement and membership. Each day 1,200 youth attend before and after school programs at 29 school-based sites in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

“As a parent, what Camp Fire means to me is that all the worries aren’t there any more; who are my children playing with, where are they playing and who is caring for them. They’ve given us support with all three of our children. The staff members are outgoing, they’re positive, they love kids and it shows, it absolutely shows. I see my kids learning to think and become more confident because the Camp Fire staff doesn’t just tell them what to do, but they’re guiding them and helping them make choices. That’s where the core values of Camp Fire really come through.”

– Betsy Goudreau

Betsy Goudreau with her youngest son, Mitch.

“Camp Fire has allowed my husband and me to continue working, but

it’s really more than that. It has become our family.”

Camp Fire USA embraces diversity and inclusiveness in all of its endeavors.

Community Center ProgramCenters are located in low-income neighborhoods and provide youth with a safe and protected place to play, an extra measure of adult attention, additional help with homework and opportunities to explore interests. Centers are free of charge to all youth and approximately 250 children participate daily.

Anchorage locations: Fairview Recreation Center, Loussac Manor, Central Lutheran Church

Fairbanks locations: Spruce Park and Birch Park

“My children are the most important thing in my life, and with Camp Fire’s help I have been able to work full time and build a stable future for them. As a single mother, balancing work and child care is really difficult. You can’t work unless you know your children are in a safe place. Camp Fire’s community center at Loussac Manor was there for my children every day. They were not only safe, but they were loved, cared for and treated with respect. They got help with their homework and had fun with their friends. Gracias de lo mas profundo de mi corazon – Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

– Josephina Mora Josephina with her four children and new neighbors in their recently purchased first home.

“Gracias de lo mas profundo de mi corazon.”

Camp Fire USA builds caring relationships.

Summer CampsSummer camp is a unique environment where children broaden their horizons, connect with the natural world and learn how to operate as part of a group. Camp is a safe, fun and inclusive community with caring adults who provide guidance as campers are challenged to learn new skills, make new friends and gain new levels of self-confidence. More than 1,000 youths attend camp each summer.

Camp Kushtaka is an overnight camp on Kenai Lake in Cooper Landing, serving campers ages 7 to 17.

Camp Si La Meo is a day-camp program in Anchorage, located on the campus of Alaska Pacific University, serving campers ages 4 to 13.

“I think camp is good for kids because it is not only safe, and not only fun, but it’s emotionally stable and free of prejudice and cliques. It’s a place where you get to discover yourself. I’ve usually followed most of my life, but as a Counselor in Training at Camp Kushtaka I discovered that I could be a good leader. You don’t know what kind of leadership skills you have until you actually get a chance to lead other people. What I learned is that keeping an open mind, being patient with yourself and others, and having the ability to empathize are the skills you need to be a good leader.”

– Orion Thiele, age 17 Counselor in TrainingOrion with a young camper

at Camp Kushtaka.

“I discovered that I could be a good leader”

Camp Fire USA provides outdoor programs which foster competence, stewardship, and joy with the natural world.

Rural Alaska ProgramThe Rural Alaska Program teaches swimming and cold-water survival skills to children and teens who live in communities along Alaska’s coasts and large rivers. In addition to water safety, the program focuses on developing healthy life skills and includes recreational activities such as crafts, games, hikes, camp outs and youth community service projects.

In 2006 Camp Fire visited the following communities: Amber, Aniak, Chenega Bay, Chuathbaluk, Crooked Creek, Grayling, Hughes, Kaltag, Kiana, Kongiganak, Koyukuk, Nulato, Point Hope, Shageluk, South Naknek, Tatitlek

Kongiganak sits on the Kuskokwim River, just above Bristol Bay. It is a wild and beautiful Yupik community where boardwalks and plywood mark their place on the tundra. As soon as we landed we were invited to a feast of ugruk (bearded seal) and rice. The children were so excited, and for 14 days they never left our sides. Their curious eyes followed us everywhere and their hearts and hands were ready to learn what we came to teach. Whether it was tundra tag or learning the help and huddle, the enormous energy the kids brought to Camp Fire was an indication to me that we were in the perfect place, doing an amazing thing.

– Rural Program Staffer

“Their hearts and hands were ready to learn what we came to teach.”

Camp Fire USA provides Alaska’s youth with positive experiences which promote healthy life choices.
