Dear Friends,

It gives me great pleasure to present the 2006-2007 Annual Report for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale spotlighting the important accomplishments achieved through the areas of youth development programs, facilities and operations, and fundraising.

We wanted to do something a bit different this year in the design and thought that an interactive report would be both informative and entertaining. “We Got Game” serves as the perfect theme to drive this concept. In addition to a report on our financial and organizational goals, we have sprinkled throughout the report mazes, word search puzzles and brain teasers. We hope you enjoy…and at the same time, read about the impact your support has had on our Club members. Here are a few highlights from the past fiscal year:

• In the fall, we celebrated the dedication of the clubhouse in Fountain Hills as the Mary Ellen & Robert McKee Branch. The ceremony was a surprise for guest of honor, Mary Ellen McKee, a volunteer and friend of the Club for more than 26 years. In addition to volunteering their time and energy, the McKees have supported many of the Club’s capital campaigns, including the Expanding Horizons Campaign, which has raised more than $15 million to date. • SteveDavidsonwasappointedpresident/CEOoftheBoys&GirlsClubsofGreaterScottsdaleinJanuary.Steve has been with the Scottsdale organization since 1992, but has over 25 years of experience working in the Clubs. His leadership and dedication to provide stellar programs to community youth will have a long-lasting impact. • We received a grant from the Charles Schwab Foundation to continue to offer Money Matters: Make It Count, a program that teaches money management skills to Club members ages 13 to 18. Since 2004, the grant had funded the program at the Lehi and Hartley & Ruth Barker Branches serving more than 100 teens. • SevenoutstandingteenagerswerehonoredattheannualCelebrateYouthDinner&Auction.Congratulationsto ShannonHolmesfromTheThunderbirdsBranchforbeingnamedthe2007YouthoftheYear,thehighesthonora Club member can receive from the organization. • The United Food Bank, in partnership with the ConAgra Foods Feeding Children Better Foundation and America’s Second Harvest, celebrated the grand opening of Kids Café at the Lehi and Red Mountain Branches located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Kids Café is one of nation’s largest charitable meal service programs for children at risk of hunger. • ConstructioncontinuedonthenewestclubhouselocatedinnortheastPhoenix.Thegrandopeningwasheldin July2007,justfollowingthecloseofthefiscalyear.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale continues to thrive and expand in many areas while remaining true to its commitment of providing a positive place for kids. The Club is fortunate to have the support and generosity of concerned individuals, corporations, and organizations in the Valley and throughout the nation who help to enrich the lives of our youth members.

ACTIVITY #3BRAID MAZE

Youstartoutsidethemazeatthe bottom, and your goal is to reach our logo at the center of the maze. This maze has no dead ends in it; all passages are connected with each other in ways designed to run you around in circles instead of block your way. It’s probably harder than it looks, where the

traditional method of following a wall to solve a maze will not help here, as you’ll just go around in a circle around the center and find yourself back at the start again!

Good luck.

Meet Paola, age 6

Paolaisasoft-heartedsix-year-oldwhohasgreatlybenefitedfromtheOutreach Services of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. Paola was having a very difficult time adjusting to kindergarten last year, so she became a Club member to help her adjust to school and boost her self-esteem. The Club staff and her family have seen an enormous transformation from Paola, as she is now a cheerful, friendly first grader, instead of the shy kindergartener she was just a year ago.

Paolahasthreebrothersandfivesisters, andisapartofOutreachServiceswiththreeofheroldersiblings.Shehasbeen involved in several programs, and especially enjoys America Reads, where she receives assistance on reading and her homework. “I like it because they read to me,” says Paola. “They help me read too.”

PaolaattendedtheJCPenneyPowerShoppingHourinAugust, whereClubmembersinneedofassistancearegiven the opportunity to purchase supplies and clothes for the new school year. Paola was very thankful to be given this opportunity, one she would otherwise not have had. “I got new shirts and sweaters and shoes,” says Paola. “It was a lot of fun!”

Being involved in Keystone Club is a commendable way for teenagers to become involved in the Club and our community. Every branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale has a Keystone Club, dedicated to character and leadership development for all members ages 14 to18. Keystone Club members run their own Club by electing officers, choosing their own activities and planning and implementing community service projects.

Activities consist of six areas: service to the Club and community, character and leadership development, education and career exploration, unity, free enterprise and social recreation. Community service projects and activities range from members planning and executing a fundraising car wash to helping younger children at the Club. All Keystone Club members are invited to participate in regional and national conferences which thousands of youths attend.Everyyear, individualKeystoneClubsworkonandcreateaNationalTEENSupremeKeystoneProjectbasedon community service. Battle of the Brains is an entertaining and educational event that brings together members from different branches of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale for an intellectually stimulating competition. Battle of the Brains was first started in 2002 and has now become a much anticipated annual spring event by many Club members. Battle of the Brains is a group competition focusing on two important skills, teamwork and problem solving.

The all-day event takes place on a Saturday as Club members work collaboratively in groups to complete four challenges focusing on different skills. Teams are composed of youth from each location to represent their branch. Previous challenges have included a jeopardy-like game show based on member’s knowledge on a variety of topics; a component called“MindField”,wheregroupsarequizzed onmathematics;andatraditionalquizbowl. Each year a new Battle of the Brains logo is created for the event and utilized in a reoccurring challenge. A huge jigsaw puzzle of the logo is created and dissembled. MethSMART is a comprehensive educational tool that strives to stop the spread of methamphetamine use, or meth, by teaching Club members about the terrible effects of using drugs, specifically meth. MethSMART acknowledges the need to educate children about drugs in the early stages of youth development before they have the opportunity to try drugs. Members learn about drugs with an emphasis on meth, and the harm they cause on the body and mind. The program involves interactive learning sessions that are specially designed to teach Club membersaboutthephysicalandenvironmentalconsequencesofmethuse.

The physical dangers include heart attack, stroke and even death, while environmental impacts include toxic fumes being released into the atmosphere and chemical contamination of soil and groundwater. Parents are also actively involved in the program. Parents are educated through discussions on identifying

meth use and solutions on how to resolve the problem. Parents also receive a handbook that explains the MethSMART program and offers ideas on how to begin family discussions on the topic of drugs. MethSMART is a preventative and educational measure dedicated to reducing the spread of meth use among our community’s youth.
