Swimming and Diving Year in ReviewThe Colby-Sawyer College men’s and women’s swim-ming and diving teams each turned in respectable seasons in their sixth season competing as a varsity program. The men’s team went 6-6 overall including a 5-2 mark in NEISDA events. The women were 5-9 overall and 4-5 in conference under the guidance of head coach Rick Goerlitz.

The Chargers won four of their first six meets on the men’s side. Colby-Sawyer’s two wins of the season came in the second event of season – a dual meet on Oct.28 against Bridgewater State and Norwich. CSC bested the Bears 117-22 and the Cadets 75-67. The victory over the Norwich marked the first in the his-tory of the program.

After dropping a 162-119 decision to Keene State on Nov. 4, the Chargers reeled off two more victories. They beat both Saint Michael’s and Elms College in successive weeks. Against Saint Michael’s, sopho-more co-captain Wil McCarthy (Westboro, Mass.) won the 100-yard butterfly and 200 butterfly for the Chargers. Freshman Ryan Martin (Chester, N.H.) also was tops in both the 500- and 1650-yard freestyle events.

At home versus Elms on Oct. 18, the men won 11 different events, cruising to a 127-72 win. Junior co-captain Jaime Messier (Wiscasset, Maine) was victorious in both the one- and three-meter diving events, and Eric Driver (Sudbury, Mass.) won the 50 backstroke. Sophomore Billy Lyons (Troy, N.Y.) also won 50 breaststroke.

The CCC Invitational hosted by Roger Williams saw the men’s team finish second out of four. Martin (three), McCarthy (three), and Messier (two) picked up a combined eight wins to lead the Chargers. Mc-Carthy set a school record in the 200 medley, with a time of 26.16 in the 50 backstroke. Martin also broke the 1650 freestyle mark with a time of 18:29.54. Messier had 370 points in the meet, an NCAA condi-

tional score.

The men’s team split meets with Salem State and the University of New England on Dec. 9, beating UNE 109-22 and dropping a close one to Salem State 72-67. The Chargers performed well at the Orange Bowl Classic, a non-scoring meet, in Key Largo, Fla. Mc-Carthy had two first-place finishes to go along with a second in the Jan, 8 event. He won both the 50- and 100-meter butterfly races, and was runner up in the 50 freestyle. Several other student-athletes captured top-10 spots in the meet, including John DeGray (Wethersfield, Conn.), Martin, Driver and Lyons.

The Chargers suffered a three-meet losing streak be-tween Jan. 20-24 against Connecticut College, Clark and Wesleyan on Jan. 20, and then beat Gordon on Jan. 24. During the streak the Chargers didn’t lose by fewer than 54 points.

Zac Lamas (Naugatuck, Conn.), McCarthy, Lyons, Messier and DeGray all had multiple wins as the Chargers beat UMass Dartmouth, 172-110 on Feb. 3.

At the New England Championships hosted by the University of New Hampshire, the men had their best finish in program history in the meet, placing fifth out of 13 schools.

McCarthy remained conference champion in the 50 fly, 100 fly and this year moved up a spot from 3rd last year to second in the 200 fly. McCarthy posted new school records in the 50 fly (23.55), 200 fly (1:59.79) and in his lead off leg of the 200 free relay in which his time of 22.07 in the 50 free is a new school record.Junior Jamie Messier was second in the 3 meter diving with a score of 347.00 and 3rd in the 1 meter board with a score of 343.30. Sophomore John De-Gray broke his own school records in the 1000 free (10:41.66) and in the 1650 free (17:50.66).

Meet the Coaches

In just five short sea-sons, Rick Goerlitz

has built the Colby-Sawyer swimming and diving teams into one of the top programs in New England.

Goerlitz, the 2004 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Women’s Coach of the Year, guided his teams to

new heights in 2006, as the women’s team

garnered its first top-five finish in school history, while the men’s team earned a spot in the top 10 for the first time in their short history.

The Chargers also had several firsts, as Breien Milton became the first swimmer in school history to earn an NCAA “B” Cut time. In addition, Will McCarthy was the first swimmer in Colby-Sawyer history to compete at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Open Championships, finishing 16th in the 100 butterfly.

The 2005-06 season saw the men’s team re-write the record books, as 13 different records fell during the season.

Goerlitz has also coached the 2004 Swimmer of the Meet at the NEISDA Championships and the 2007 Kay Fromer Award Winner, as Breien Milton.

Goerlitz has previously served as head coach at Gan-non and St. Rose, producing two All-Americans at Gannon. He began his career as an assistant coach at Potsdam State from 1991-94.

Goerlitz graduated from Potsdam State in 1993 with a degree in mathematics with concentrations in health science and computer science.
