The Atkinson Middle School became aschool for the ages on April 21—the MiddleAges. For that day, more than 25 teachersand hundreds of sixth-graders came toschool dressed in elaborate Middle Agescostumes to celebrate the school's firstRenaissance Day.

Organized by sixth-grade teacher JeanneDione, the day featured classes and activitieswith Renaissance themes, an exciting andcolorful complement to the topic that theclasses had just concluded studying.

Art classes talked about Renaissance-related "perspective" issues; physical educa-tion focused on games that might have beenplayed centuries ago; music teachers andstudents basing themselves in different partsof the hallways served as roaming "trouba-dours," performing numbers that might havebeen familiar to visitors to'the king's court inthe 1500s.

In one unique, interactive activity, studentspositioned like statues played the roles ofhistoric figures and recited descriptions oftheir characters' achievements and signifi-

cance when physically "tapped" on theshoulder to "activate" their brief presenta-tions.

"We wanted to give life to the world his-tory we had just concluded studying," saidMs. Dione.

Among the more non-traditional sights atAtkinson on that colorful day were teachersdressed as sorcerers, kings and queens, elab-orately costumed handmaidens and robedmonks. Students wore costumes handmadeor purchased and became princesses, knights, and court jesters.

Students were shepherded from class toclass, where often exotic activities and lec-tures by costumed teachers created a sensethat at least for that morning, their schoolhad been transformed into a mini-DisneyWorld.

Observing the clusters of kings, monks, knights, jesters, sorcerers and troubadourswalking through the hallways and in and out'of classes, one fifth-grader had a decidedlynon-Renaissance reaction: "This is so cool!"

Joseph Scannell's last straw OTQft

by Joan Delaney

Despite public speculation, CountyLegislator Joseph Scannell, a Democrat, insists that he does not intend to switchparties, but he is not a happy camper.

In a phone interview with The Leader,Mr. Scannell commented onthe recent controversy withCounty Executive ThomasSuozzi, whose intention tolease the historic Nunley'sCarousel to Oyster Bay hasinfuriated the Baldwin leg-islator.

"The carousel was inBaldwin for 50 years. Itbelongs here. There arethree possible locations forit - Baldwin Park (a townpark) where there arealready other facilitiesincluding bathrooms, Silver Lake. Park(a county park) which is on MerrickRoad, or even at the 38 county-ownedacres north of Goes Neck Park." The lasttwo sites, however, would require thedevelopment of ancillary facilities tomake the attraction viable.

If the carousel could not be returnedto Baldwin, Mr. Scannell would beamenable to locating it at eitherMuseum Row at Mitchel Field, the ini-tial site for which it was intended whenthe county condemned the attractionback in 1995, or at Eisenhower Park, with its many other facilities. "If it can'tbe in Baldwin, it should at least be at acentral location," he said.

While the location of the carousel isof concern to Mr. Scannell, the lack ofany semblance of collegiality by Mr.Suozzi is of greater concern to the

Joseph Scannell

Baldwin legislator."When he tried to move the First

Precinct without conferring with any-one, and we protested and got communi-ty support, we thought that he learnedhis lesson. Now, less than six monthslater, we find out from reading the news-

papers that he has beennegotiating again withouttelling the legislature."

Mr. Scannell says thathe is pleased that his caucusas well as Republicans havesupported him on this issue. He added, "Whatever Mr.Suozzi intends, he can't doanything without theapproval of the legislature."

However, comment-ing on the rumors that hemight change political par-ties, Mr. Scannell said that

he would not, insisting that he prefers tostay part of the majority where he hasleverage to best represent his con-stituents. However, since'the Democratshave only a 10-9 majority, any defectionby Mr. Scannell would switch thatmajority, at least in the legislature.

When the carousel was purchased bythe county, the responsibility for thefund-raising to restore the carousel andlocate it at Museum Row fell to the non-profit organization, Friends for LongIsland Heritage. The intent was to locatethe carousel near the Children's Museumand the Cradle of Aviation museumalong with an eating facility to be calledthe Gold Ring Cafe. Under the Suozziadministration, however, the relation-ship between the county and the Friendsfor Long Island Heritage, which ranmany historic attractions, ended because

of questions about some of the group'saccounting practices and activities.

Mr. Scannell said that while he stillhas to confirm it, he has been told thatthe monies raised by that group did go torestore several of the carousel horses.

Meanwhile, political speculation con-tinues, with Republicans still not select-ing a challenger to run against Mr.Scannell. At numerous public meetings,Mr. Scannell and Town of HempsteadCouncilman Anthony Santino, aRepublican, as well as an aide toRepublican Party Chairman JosephMondello, speak positively of eachother and of their cooperative workingrelationship in representing Baldwin.

In his final comments to The Leader,Mr. Scannell noted that Mr. Suozzi'sbehavior regarding the carousel was,"the last straw." However, politicallyspeaking, it is not clear exactly what

"the last straw" really means. And in timing which adds an element

of irony to the situation, at the nationallevel, the United States Supreme Court ispresently considering a case on the issueof eminent domain, the power by whichmuncipalities are allowed to condemnproperty for the common good. This wasthe legal basis by which the county, under Republican County ExecutiveThomas Gulotta, was originally able tocondemn the carousel, which was pri-vately owned by the Lercari family. Thatjudicial decision could be precedent-set-ting in limiting the now undefined limitsof such governmental power.

Meanwhile, while the political andlegal posturing goes round and round, the carousel horses, once part of abeloved merry-go-round, lie still.

A dilemmaWhat would you do?We were barreling down the country road in North

Carolina trying to keep up with another car on the way.to ride horses in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Suddenly, two small tan and white puppies were rightin the middle of the road in front of us.

"Well, I wouldn't run over'them," said'ohe wise manwe know.

We stopped and caught the puppies as they made theirway to a bus shelter where someone had left a can of dogfood. Then we asked around in the neighborhood if any-one hadjost puppies..We saw,a ."found" .sign for another, puppy!

And someone said, "They were probably put out. Ithappens all the time. Some country people drown thefemales and put out the males." So we left a local phonenumber and traveled on.

The puppies were definitely not playing second fiddleto the two beautiful white horses and the spectacularmountain scenery. Didn't Charles Schulz say,"Happiness is a warm puppy"?

The thought of bringing them to a local shelter wherethey might be put to sleep was too hard to bear, and theywere wiggling their way into our hearts with every pass^ing minute. After all, hadn't we saved their lives for areason? .

And so they came back to New York with us. We'recalling them "Smoky" and "Bryson" after their home-town. Two'small, North Carolina hunting dogs, possiblya beagle mix. We trust our vet will tell us more.

But. . . what would you do?Please send us your responses, and we will print some

in a future issue, because we figure other people wouldlike to know, too.

Baldwin library board adopts budgetby Joan Delaney

The Baldwin Library Board of Trusteeshas adopted a proposed budget of$3,327,000 for 2005/06 which is$229,615 more than the current budgetand represents a 7.4 percent increase inspending. Residents will be asked to voteon this budget on Tuesday, May 17, at thesame time as the vote on the school budg-et and the election of school and libraryboard candidates.

Librarian-in-charge Catherine Overton,Administrative Assistant Colleen Hughesand Board President Kevin Kamenexplained the proposed budget and therationale behind the numbers.

Ms. Overton noted,. "We wanted to giveresidents the library program that theydescribed during focus groups that wereconducted prior to the expansion plan-ning. This is reflected in increased spend-ing for cultural programs and educationalservices, including $9,000 in funding forthe children's department's Family Place."The Family Place is a center for childhoodinformation, parent education, emergentliteracy, socialization and family support.

Funding for the expanded facilityshows an increase of $56,585 for mainte-nance of the larger building and groundsand an additional $16,005 for equipmentmaintenance. Health insurance is project-ed to increase by $22,000. Under theexisting contract, the library pays 100percent of this cost for its full-timeemployees with employees paying 50percent for the additional costs for familycoverage.

Salaries and benefits are presentlybeing negotiated for professional staff andmany employees are wearing buttonsadvocating an "average salary."

Acknowledging the pending contractnegotiations, Mr. Kamen said that he isnot able to discuss the particulars of thenegotiations or previous offers, but saidthat the board is trying to be fair in mak-ing adjustments. Non-union employeeshave already received their increases. Mr.Kamen stressed that the board has to bemindful of the community's ability andwillingness to pass a library budget whileaddressing the need to increase salaries.Presently, an additional $105,400 is allo-

cated in the $1,801,950 salary code, buthow this will be distributed among thevarious levels of professonal staff isdependent on negotiations.

Ms. Overton spoke of changes inlibrary services, changes in informationalservices as well as the many decisions thatlibrarians have to make in the growingage of technology.

Regarding research materials, she saidthat presently, the library maintains bothupdated print and database sources, butthe time is coming when the library willhave to decide on an either/or basis.Research books are very expensive andtake up a lot of space, but databases, which contain a lot more materials, arealso expensive. She said that manypatrons prefer being able to go to oneprint source. "For them, that is easier."

To accommodate additional technologyservices, the library now has two full timeemployees and one consultant to dealwith both the internal and public aspectsof computers, including individualizedand group computer instruction for resi-dents. This year 50 additional Dell com-puters were purchased and the library is inthe midst of implementing the infrastruc-ture needed for wireless technology.

Mr. Kamen stressed, however, that theboard has always been committed to printmaterials. He said, "Every year we haveincreased the budget for books and thisyear we have increased that line by$21,500."

As the library moves forward, the- expanded space will allow expanded serv-ices, but Mr. Kamen explained that everydecision has a financial impact. "No mat-ter what we do," he said, "there is a costinvolved." He pointed out that unlikeschools, the library only receives approxi-mately $9,000 to $10,000 in annual stateaid through the Nassau Library Systemplus whatever grant money local legisla-tors are able to secure. Ms. Overton point-ed out that state aid for libraries has notincreased since 1998. "Unfortunately, libraries don't have the same kind of vocaladvocates as do schools," said Mr. Kamen.

Because of the need to continuallyassess expenditures, the board will con-duct a usage study to see if the existinghours of operation are meeting the needs

of the public. Presently, the library curtailsweekend hours during early and late sum-mer with closure on Friday nights,Saturday afternoons and Sundays duringJuly and August. An actual mechanicalcounter to determine patron usage wasemployed the last time hours werechanged.

Staffing is also always under review.Referring to Mr. Hughes, Mr. Kamenstressed that although her title is that ofadministrative assistant, she actually hasboth personnel and financial responsibili-ties. In addition to librarians and otherprofessional and clerical staff, there aretwo full time and four part time custodi-ans. Several years ago, security staffingwas also initiated and that will be supple-mented this year with security cameras.

Commenting on the library's financialaccountability, Ms. Hughes described aprocess of detailed oversight. Every check •must be signed by three people - thedirector or librarian in charge, the treasur-er and one board member. Every check isverified against purchase orders, bills andinvoices. Board members receive a checkregister and explanation for every checkat each monthly meeting, and at boardmeetings, the trustees may ask for. addi-tional back-up information on particularchecks. Payment is not made until all fiveboard members are satisfied with the ver-ifications. Each year, an outside auditorconducts a full audit and the library mustalso present a report to the New YorkState Department of Education.

Expanding on the decision-makinginvolved in delivering library services,Ms. Overton explained that many of thematerials which are purchased reflect pre-vious, patterns of patron usage or patronrequests. In addition, the libary subscribes

to numerous professional journals, incud-ing book reviews, which help them intheir selection of materials. Programmingespecially reflects community interests.Mr. Kamen says he hopes to see the newcommunity room fully utilized. Theexpanded area holds 180 people and canbe divided in half.

Another enhancement, begun under thedirectorship of Barbara Hopkins and sug-gested by trustee Joan Zeitlin, who hadseen the program in Boston, is the avail-ability of museum passes which may bechecked out for three days. Presently, thelibrary has memberships for 15 differentmuseums including the MetropolitanMuseum, the Museum of Modem Art andthe most recent, the Whaling Museum inCold Spring Harbor.

During the last month, the library hasbeen in a transitional mode as the olderwing is refurbished. When that is com-pleted, the permanent placement of booksand materials and the installation of furni-ture, and equipment will take place, requiring another brief shut-down. Afterthat, thetcommunity will finally have itslong-awaited facility.

In 2000, a survey of Baldwin's "down-town," funded by the Chamber ofCommerce and Town of Hempstead wasconducted by professional consultantsand included the opinions of hundreds ofresidents who participated in numerousfocus groups. In that final report, theBaldwin Library was identified as one ofthe community's major assets. With theexpansion completed and a proposedbudget to support the facility, its services, and its requested enhancements, the boardand staff hope that the library's value toresidents will continue to be recognizedand enjoyed.

letters fo tho editorFrills" budget

To The Leader:This year I volunteered to be: part of

the Budget Advisory Committee for theFreeport schools. The committee con-sisted of bright, caring and dedicatedcommunity members. Business owners, homeowners, faculty, administrators, students, parents, and senior citizens allworked together to see that Freeport'schildren get the best possible education, without overburdening the taxpayers.

During these past several mdnths, members of the committee spoke to allthe directors and coordinators to learnabout the programs that are available toour students. We also learned about anendless list of items, such as line itemexpenditures, capital projects, competi-tive bidding, program component, increase of revenues and assessed .evalu-ation.

The most important thing that Ilearned is that there will only be winnersthis year. Freeport School administratorshave worked hard to propose a "NoFrills!" budget. If the school budgetpasses, the children will have a soundand responsible budget that will enablethe Freeport School District to continueproviding excellence in education andsupply them with the services and pro-grams required to become successful

adults that we can all be proud of. Inaddition, our taxpayers can also beassured that the increase to their taxes isonly due to the increased requirementsbeing placetTon the district, for example- New York State mandates, rising healthcosts, contractual obligations, and neces-sary building repairs. Furthermore,Freeport's taxpayers can also celebrateNew York's State's $1,350,000 increasein state aid, of which $1,050,000 will begiven back to the community to reducethe proposed tax levy.

Our schools are one of the great back-bones of our diverse community. I urgeeveryone to help keep it strong, to showthe pride that we feel as a community. We need to deliver the message that weare willing to do what is best for our chil-dren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, schools, and community bysupporting our budget

Canal plan moves forward BMS kicks buttsby Joan Delaney

At its April 19, meeting, the Town ofHempstead Town Board approved legis-lation which would allow Baldwinhomeowners whose property abuts theGrand Canal and West End Canal tovote to authorize the creation of a spe-cial canal district. This would allow thetown to tax dredging and bulkheadrepair improvements that would makethe canals navigable, even during low .tide. ;

According to town communicationsofficial Susie Trenkle, approximately 150affected property owners will be receiv-ing ballots in the mail in six to eightweeks to authorize a study of the project, estimated at $168,000. To pass, a 2/3approval is required but this is based onlinear frontage, rather than on a per per-son vote. The ballots must be notarizedand returned. If this passes, the residentsmust vote again to Authorize the actualproject.

The issue of the panals has been aconcern for many years and has beenintroduced in numerous venues includ-ing both county and town communitymeetings. Over recent years, town-pro-posed bills have been brought to thestate legislature, but while theyreceived senate approval, they never

passed the assembly. Finally, the towndecided to propose its own legislationafter a recent case in East Rockawayseemed to create a precedent for the locallegislation.

.During community meetings, resi-dents frequently described problemscreated by debris that had settled andmade the canals impassable during lowtide. Some blamed various municipali-ties and wanted the cost of theimprovements to be borne by a govern-ment entity. Time and again officialsexplained that the cost for improving theprivate canals could not be publiclyfunded. On the other hand, it was oftenpointed out by residents that liabilitycoverage and the scope of the projectprecluded it being undertaken by indi-vidual homeowners.

If property owners approve the studyand the proposed improvements, thetown would issue bonds to pay for theproject. Homeowners within the canalimprovement district would then beassessed costs through their propertytaxes.

April 13 was National Kick ButtsDay and thousands of youth in everystate and around the world were askedto stand up, speak out, and seize controlin the fight against Big Tobacco.Health classes at Baldwin MiddleSchool discussed the negative effects ofsmoking and worked to get the messageout there. When asked about the celebration of

National Kick Butts Day at the middleschool, eighth-grader Sean Amonds said,

"We made a graffiti wall. We wrote factsabout smoking and how it affectsteenagers," The graffitti wall and a num-ber of posters were displayed in the com-mons throughout the day. Students spenttime reading the facts and valuable mes-sages during their lunch periods andafter school. Simmi Singh, also aneighth-grader, added, "It will teach peo-ple the consequences of smoking andwhat could happen to them [if theysmoke]."

New Shining Star Comes to FreeportRestaurant Review by Carolee Fox

Jeremy's Ale House, one of Wall Street's favorite hangouts, has opened a location onFreeport's Nautical Mile. This spunky new addition on Woodcleft Avenue is located onthe premises which was the home of Erhardt's Clam Bar for many years.

Jeremy's is the breath of fresh air long needed on the Nautical Mile, where the empha-sis is on unpretentious good seaside food at very affordable prices. Fresh fish is pur-chased daily, and you'll not find a meal on the menu priced over $10. Waiters and wait-resses have been replaced by self-service. The indoor dining area has been expandedand refurbished, and now .with improving weather, you may prefer to eat outdoors onthe patio or on their waterside deck. A new, Raw Tiki Bar will be opening on the patiothis summer.

For as long as he can remember, Jeremy has always wanted to be a restaurateur. Hisrestaurant in lower Manhattan is quite famous and has attracted an eclectic crowd forover thirty years. He owes his success to his father who advised.him to always give thepeople the best meal possible at the best price that can be afforded. Jeremy has fol-lowed that advice and is proud to have been given awards for Best Chowder, Best FriedClams, and Best Fried Calamari in New York and Long Island Festivals.

Although the menu features seafood, landlubbers will not be at a loss, for there is also •a nice selection of chicken, burgers, and hotdogs. The Seafood Chowder is a deliciousManhattan Style soup, with chunks of clams, shrimp, and fish. I also enjoyed the rich, creamy New England version. Raw Clams served on the half shell are always fresh, andplump. The Crab Cakes are made with very little breading and only real crab meat isused. I recommend sharing a bucket of fresh steamers in broth and served with drawnbutter.

All seafood entrees are served grilled or fried in a variety of batters. Only pure vegetableoil is used for frying and is kept fresh with frequent changes. Fried entrees are servedwith fries and cole slaw. .

Fried Calamari, which was voted New York's best, was as good as touted. Crunchy bat-ter and soft tender rings were served with a zesty Marinara. Also .quite excellent werethe plump, moist dry batter scallops. Cajun Shrimp had a nice little zing, and the beerbattered shrimp were also excellent.

Other entrees highly recommended are the flounder Fish & Chips and the Fried Oysters.Make sure you order Jeremy's Special Chips. They're a huge portion of hot homemadepotato chips that are just out of this world.

Jeremy's has a full bar, featuring 16 beers on draft with daily specials. Beers and sodasare moderately priced and served by the pint or the bucket (quart). Mixed drinks and'shooters are also available.

If you catch a fish in Freeport bring it to the restaurant, the managers Jayson or Justinwill gladly make sure it's cooked and prepared to perfection for you,, at no charge.Children will also be given fishing rods to use at the wharf while they are in the restau-rant. Docking slips are also available for diners.

When the Mets or the Yankees are playing, Jeremy's offers an all-you-can-eat ChickenWing Special at only $6.95, and Clams on the Half Shell are only $ .50 a piece.

Jeremy's is a great place to get good food at a great price. It's open all year round, 7 daysa week for lunch and dinner. The best of Manhattan has come to the Nautical Mile inFreeport.

Christine Reid, owner of Celebrations, knowshow kids like to party. She is a mom of threeyoung children herself, ages 2,4 and 9. Her assis-tants, Rachel, Sara and Lilly are experienced inDay Care work and have Early Childhood train-ing.

At the five year-old Birthday Party parentswere invited to stay and enjoyed getting to knowone another.

The store site has been transformed into a partyplace with bright colors, tables and chairs, a discoroom and make-up station, and gift boutique.

Christine features three specialty parties tochoose from and each theme has a fun agenda forkids from four years to Sweet 16. Tot parties for2 to 3 year- olds are also a choice.

At the five year-old party, little girls had theirnails and make-up done, picked a special animalpal to stuff and love, played games, danced in thedisco room with a DJ, enjoyed pizza and birthdaycake and giggled a lot.

Kids were guided easily from one activity toanother with no lapses in the fun. The experi-enced hostesses draw the shy little ones out help-ing them stuff their animal, naming it and dress-ing it.

By the time the food is served, the bundles ofenergy seemed happy to sit awhile.

Young Moms find Celebrations gives an at-home atmosphere without all the work. Momsand Dads talk and kids party.

Pick a party and everything is supplied: pizzaor bagels, juice or soda, paper goods, invitations, goodie bags and activities. Celebrations hostspecial events like Baby Showers, girls' night outand a host of party choices.

A Mommy and Me class begins in May for oneto three year-olds that includes developmentalskills, crafts, playtime and snacks.

Town proposal for carousel location<u

fN

§

The Town of Hempstead issued the fol-

lowing press release conserning the pro-

posed relocation of the former Nunley's

Carousel (see page 3):

Hempstead Town Supervisor KateMurray and Senior Councilman Anthony

Santino have announced that they have

developed a plan to-return the historic

Nunley's Carousel to its longtime homecommunity of Baldwin. The stunning

1912 carousel delighted generations of

south shore residents from 1939 untilNunley's Amusement Park closed its doors

in 1995. Nassau County purchased the

Baldwin.According to detectives, the defen-

dant, Rong Di Dai, 45, of Flushing,

offered sexual favors for money toundercover detectives inside Chang

Chang Bodyworks, 1019 Atlantic

Avenue, Baldwin. The defendant is charged with prostitu-

tion.

A woman was killed in an accident at

Merrick Road and Central Avenue,

Baldwin on Thursday, April 21, at 6:12a.m. '

According to detectives, the victim, an

83-year-old pedestrian, was crossing

Merrick Road southbound at Central

Avenue when she was struck by a 2005

Toyota traveling eastbound on Merrick

Road. The driver of the vehicle, Scott

Borland, 39, of Oceanside, was arrested at

the scene for Driving While Under the

Influence of Drugs. The victim, Katherine

O'Reilly of Baldwin, was pronounced deadat the scene.

amusement in 1998, and a controversy has

erupted over a recent proposal to move the

kiddle ride to Oyster Bay.

"The Nunley's carousel was a Baldwin

fixture for over half a century," observedMurray, "Moving this South Shore treas-

ure to Oyster Bay makes about as much

sense as moving the Coney IslandCyclone to Peoria, Illinois."

Mr. Santino said that he and Ms.

Murray and decided that the town neededto take steps to preserve the carousel at a

location near its former Baldwin home on

Sunrise Highway. The two officials deter-mined that the township's Baldwin Park

would be a suitable home for the 1912

children's ride.

Baldwin Park features baseball fields,

playgrounds, a skate park, tennis, hand-

ball and basketball courts and a roller

hockey rink, among other amenities. The

facility has been the site of a recent

recreational innovation, one of the first

skate parks on Long Island.

"It's time to think outside the box,"declared Mr. Santino. "This would be a

fine example of two levels of government

working together for the benefit of our

mutual constituents. Let's put politics

aside for the sake of Baldwin neighbors

and Long Island's South Shore communi-ties."

Santino mentioned that the town had

reached out to county Legislator JosephScannell, a proponent of returning the

county-owned carousel to the Baldwin

area. The town supervisor and' senior

councilman have stated that they are

committed to working cooperatively

with Legislator Scannell to keep thecarousel in Baldwin.

"Councilman Santino and I think

that future generations of South Shore

residents deserve to enjoy a piece of

the Nunley's legacy," concluded Ms.Murray.

"What a school thinks about itslibraries is a measure of what it thinksabout education" was the phrase usedto begin a presentation by FreeportHigh School library media specialistsRose Luna and Carol Gilliam in honorof Library Media Month at the April20 Freeport school board meeting.

The media specialists for all theschools were introduced, and certifi-cates given to students who did proj-ects saluting school libraries - every-thing from art to poems to songs.

School libraries are long since nolonger merely collections of books, but multimedia centers. In addition tothe traditional visual, audio and videoresources, the libraries offer access toselected Internet sites and databases'offering health, business, periodicaland reference information - informa-tion that not only can't be found onGoogle or Yahoo, but information thatcan be accessed 24/7 at the student'shome on a computer.

.The object of all of this is to culti-vate information literary skills and alove of reading in the students - teachthem to locate, evaluate, access, retrieve and utilize all this new infor-mation. The media co-ordinator has avital role in all this - to maintain thefacilities, to work with teachers tosupport the school curriculum, and toreach out to the community - notablyin partnership with the FreeportMemorial Library, whose "HomeworkExpress" program keeps the learninghappening when school is closed.

•Al-l-ef- this- is-impertant in makingfor better educated, children - statis-.tics say that schools with stronglibrary media programs increase testscores 10-20 percent.

55-64 option extendedFollowing the previous meetings'

discussion, the board voted 4-0 withone abstention (Michael Raab) toextend the 55-64 option on requiredRegents exams to earn a local diplo-ma in order to give the schools time toadjust to the proficiency standard of65 or higher.

This will be in effect for all studentsin the high school and those enteringninth grade in fall 2005 and will lastuntil the state Commissioner ofEducation reinstates the requirements.Board members at first questionedwhether it was advisable to "lower thebar" when it came to student expecta-tions. But Assistant SuperintendentRobert Harris noted that the deadline

for the new standards caught every-one by surprise, and that people with55-64 grades could still be quite suc-cessful in higher education. Dr.Eversley also noted that there havebeen many problems with the teststhemselves.

The board briefly discussed theresponse to a bureaucratic require-ment from Albany known as theUniform Violent Incident Report, inwhich violent behavior is reported tothe state. Many districts have missedthe deadline for its submission, andthere are problems with the format ofthe report - less substantial incidentscan seem more than they really are,and the same incident can be dealtwith very differently by differentschools.

The board agreed to defer the reportunti l guidance is received fromBOCES and an upcoming'Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Associationmeeting.

Two members of the Freeport HighSchool .Student Congress reported onthe success of the "Increase thePeace" program and the MusicDepartment's recent production of"Little Shop of Horrors." The alsoasked the board to examine two prob-lems regarding Advanced Placement(AP) classes: That class sizes havegotten larger (it's harder to learn in anAP class with 30 people in it) and thatrecent rises in the fees required for theAP exams may prove a hardship tosome students.

The board also accepted the propos-al of RBC Dain Rauscher, Inc. to bethe underwriter of—the proposedrefunding, bonds, wjiicjj^w.ould. refundthe 'district's outstanding bo'rided debtat lower interest rates and save thedistrict money.

The board also unanimouslyapproved the Nassau BOCES adminis-trative operations budget for2005/2006 and voted for three mem-bers of the Nassau BOCES Board, setthe 2005 reorganization meeting forJuly 13 and approved minutes and staffstatus changes in its consent agenda.

In public comment, Kevin Barryasked the board about Freedom ofInformation Law (FOIL) requests hehad made to the board (who deferredcomment owing to litigation issues)and Jason Gordon asked the board

• about the status of a past bowlingcoach at the high school.

The next meeting of the board will bea Budget-Public Hearing/PlanningMeeting on Wednesday, May 4 atAtkinson.
