Coachf,ng S€affCoach Barnson

As the 2005 season gets under way, Coach Barnson is very optimistic that the hard work and

dedication this years team has shown during inffamurals will pay off in a very exciting style of

baseball. "This year is about earning success. Showing that a commitment to team baseball is

the right way to play," says Coach Barnson."We have set some very unique goals this year related to hustle and team work that we hope

are apparent to all the supporters that come out to watch us play," explains Barnson. Coach

describes his philosophy by explaining, "there is nothing more pleasing to a coach than to see

family. Steve and his wife Ann, have been married l5 years and have 3

beautiful girls; Katelyn (l l), Kirsten (9), Kelsey (6).

his players incorporate the standards and values instilled in them

through baseball, in their academic and family life." Coach

Barnson hopes that this years motto, Deserve Glory!, is taken to

heart by every person involved in the program.

A native of Las Vegas, Coach Barnson gradutaed from TINLV with both his Bachelors and Masters

degree in Kinesiology. Bamson stafted his coaching career at Valley H.S., first as an assistant then as

their head coach. Coach Barnson's next stop was

at Mojave H. S. for the next 7 years, as their head

coach. Having the opportunity to start a new

program at Shadow Ridge H.S., is something

Coach Barnson is very excited about. And this

year being the first with seniors may be the most

important of all years.

Things Coach likes to do in his spare time

when not trying to make the grass green, is

playing golf and spending quality time with his

Chris FleimanThis will be Coach Heiman's third year in the Clark County School Distric after spending the previous

five years teaching and coaching in Kansas and Nebraska. Originally from

Kansas, Heiman graduated from Hastings College in Nebraska and eamed a

degree in Physical Science. Coach Heiman's coaching duties will include

coaching the bases, working with infielders, and handling the pitchers.

Coach is looking forward to the challenge of working with all the different

players that will find themselves on the bump this season. Getting the

pitchers to buy into the "Mustang Pitching" philosophy will be Coach

Heiman's biggest chanllenge. Heiman's coaching philosophy revolves

around the idea of "always strive to be the best."

When not on the field at school you will find Coach Heiman working to help his students in the most

challenging subject taught at Shadow Ridge, physics. Mr. Heiman not only teaches the regular and honor

physics classes, but he is also teaching the AP physics class. When he finally has a chance to get away

from school he enjoys playing any sport and spending time with his family. Chris and his wife Jennifer

have 2 children; Tyler (5) and Ashlin (3).

Meet the Mustamgs

This Year: Mike is expected to be one of the cornerstones of

the Mustang pitching rotation. As a control pitcher Mike has

shown a knack of getting hiuers out by forcing them to hit his

pitch. He has a moving fastball with exceptional control and a

better than average curve ball. Through intramurals Mike has

stepped up to be one of the Mustang leaders. When Mike isn't

on the bump. he will be pushing for a starting position at 3b or

lb. Mike has also improved his hitting ability, and is expected

to contribute greatly on the offensive side for the Mustangs.

20042 As a junior Mike contributed to the Mustangs both as a

position player and as a starting pitcher. Mike was very solid in

the starting rotation for the Mustangs, getting 7 starts in 8

appearances on the bump. Mike's pitching style developed into a

control style, with Mike trying to get ahead of hitters and forcing

them to hit his pitch, Mike lead the team in walk average ('040)

and free pass average (2.52). Mike also contributed to the

Mustang success last year by seeing a great deal of time in the

outfield when not on the mound. Playing mostly right field

Mike developed into a good outfielder, with sure hands and

smaft play. One of Mike's highlights of the season came when

he lead the Mustangs to a conference win over Mojave, pitching

a complete game victory and smashing the ball at the plate.

Before the Mustangs: Mike has spent the last two

summers playing for the Mustang Senior Legion team. He has

used those summers to develop his skills in all aspects of the

game. Mike is the fype of player that has had to really work at

developing his skills, it has been a lot of trial and error for Mike

in figuring out what works best for him. Before coming to

Shadow Ridge when the school opened, Mike attended

Centennial as a freshman and sophomore and, played in their JV

program.

Meet the Mustangs

This Year: Andy will be battling for playing time as one of

the Mustang catchers this season after making the move from

playing third base last year. He has worked hard during the

intramural season to improve his defensive skills behind the

plate. Andy will also see time on the mound for the Mustangs,

and may even battle for one of the starting rotation roles. With a

good fastball and improved change-up, he is hoping to improve

on his success from last season. Andy has shown good power at

times at the plate, and is one of the Mustangs better base runners.

Having good speed and a knack of finding away to advance on

the bases, he should be one of the Mustangs leading threats

every time he is on base.

2004: Andy had a .355 batting average for the 2004 season,

the third highest on the squad. He was also tied for second with

27 hits on the year. Andy was the workhorse for the Mustangs

on the bump last season recording 12 appearances. He lead the

team with 3 wins, and was second on the team in strikeout

average. Andy's most notable pitching performance came in the

2004 spring tournament, where he set game records in Fewest

Batters Faced (30) and Fewest Hits Allowed (10).

Before the Mustangs: Andy has spent the last fwo

summers playing for the Mustangs Senior Legion team. He has

used the summers to improve his overall skills in all areas.

Before being re-zoned for Shadow Ridge Andy attended

Meet the Mustangs

This Year: Going into the season Stephen has established

himself in the starting rotation of pitchers for the Mustangs. It

is expected Steve wil l build off of the experience and success

he had last year as a junior and be one of the top pitchers in the

city as a senior. Stephen has good size and mechanics off of

the mound, throwing a better than average fastball and

exceptional change-up. Stephen is also expected to staft in the

Mustangs outfield when not on the bump. With a strong arm

and good range, he should bring some stability to the outfield.

Steve has worked very hard through intramurals on his hitting

and should find himself somewhere in the middle of the

Mustang line-up.

2004: As a junior last year Steve was named to the

All-Sunset Region Honorable Mention Team as a pitcher. He

was also ranked 13th in the city for strikeouts during the 2004

season. Stephen won both the Big Bat Award and the Ace

Award for the Mustangs last year. Both awards are statistical

awards given to the top offensive player and pitcher for the

season. During the 2004 season Steve established 6 single

game records. He also established himself as the leader in l3

different offensive and pitching categories. Most notable of

those included Batting Average (.380), Slugging Average

(.563), ERA (6.25), and Innings Pitched (49.1).

Before the Mustangs: Stephen has spent the last 2

summers playing for the Mustangs Senior Legion team. He has

tryed to used the summers to solidifu his mechanics and skills

both offensively and pitching. Before Shadow Ridge opened

Steve spent his freshman and sophomore years at Centennial.

While at Centennial he played both years at the JV level. The

highlight of his JV career came with his first high school home

run against Bonanza to dead rightfield. Stephen is also a2 year

letterman for Shadow Ridee in soccer.

Meet the Mustangs

This Year: Mike returns to the Mustangs as one of the

teams top offensive threats. Mike is expected to start for the

Mustangs in the outfield and possibly see time at lb. Mike's

aggressive style and desire to win will hopefully be a boost to

the Mustangs. Mike is also expected to contribute to the

Mustang success on the base paths as a good, intelegent runner

with better than average speed. Many of the younger Mustangs

look up to Mike for his always happy attitude and his ability to

never let his opponent see him sweat.

2004: Mike was selected to the All-sunset Region Honorable

Mention Team as a utility player, last year as a junior. He was

also the 2004 Mustang Award winner for his contributions as a

leader and being a team player. Mike played in all28 games in

2004 for the Mustangs, and took on the difficult role of being

the lead-off hiner, As a lead-off man, Mike remarkably lead

the team by establishing over l0 single season records. Those

records included; plate appearances, hits, times on base,

doubles, ffiples, RBI's, runs scored, most walks, stolen bases,

and consecutive times on base. Because of injuries to other

players Mike was asked to make the move from the outfield to

first base to help solidif, the Mustang infield. Because of

Mikes good athletic ability he was able to do this.

Before the Mustangs: Mike has played the last two

summers for the Mustangs Senior Legion team. Contributing

as a steady player who always comes ready to play. For the

2004 summer team Mike even saw a couple of innings on the

bump for the Mustangs.

Meet the nfiustangs

This Year: Shane wil l see most of his playing time this

season at second base. Shane is a hard-nosed player who isn't

afraid to get dirry. His biggest role for the Mustangs will

probably come from the offensive side. Shane has worked

hard to improve his hitting, and can do a lot of the small ball

aspects of the game. Shane is a very aggressive base runner,

with better than average speed. Shane is expected to see time

coming off of the bench in critical pinch hitting and pinch

running situation.

2004: Because of injuries to other Mustangs, last season

Shane moved from second base to shortstop. Shane was one

of only 2 players that played in every varsity game during the

2004 season. Shane's biggest contribution last year was his

growth as a offensive threat. Shane finished the season

improving his average to .295, and became a spark for the

Mustangs at the plate. Maturing as a hiffer and becoming

more consistent was a big success for Shane as a sophomore.

Before the Mustangs: Shane has played at the senior

legion level for the Mustangs during the last two summers.

Shane has shown himself as a very versatile player over the

summers playing 6 different positions.

Meet the Mustamgs

This Year: Alex is expected to be in the starting pitcher

rotation for the Mustangs this season. Alex is a hard working

crafty kind of pitcher. When he is "on", he is hitting his spots

with a sneaky fastball and good curve. Alex is expected to

build on the varsity experience he got last year and have his

arm sfrength and mechanics improve through out the 2005

season. When Alex is not on the mound he will be pushing for

a starting spot in the outfield. As a smart defensive player who

has worked to improve his range, Alex will see most of his

playing time in rightfield.

2004: Alex finished the2004 season as the Mustangs number

3 starting pitcher. He pitched in 7 games with 3 of them being

starts. He showed himself as a control type pitcher, being

ranked second on the team in Walk/Hit Batter Average. He

also ended up playing in22 of 28 games for the Mustangs as a

sophomore, and got 45 at bats. One of Alex's biggest

highlights for the 2004 season came when he scored 4 runs

against Mojave to establish a game record for the Mustangs.

Before the Mustangs: Alex has spent the last two

summers playing Senior Legion for the Mustangs. He has

tryed to use the many opporlunities to pitch and play the field

for the Mustangs over that time to improve his mechanics and

overall strength. Before being re-zoned for Shadow Ridge as a

sophomore Alex attended Centennial H. S. During his

freshman year at Centennial he played at the JV level. Before

high school Alex played both Little League and travel ball.

One of his highlights came when he won a wooden bat Home

Run Derby in a club ball tournament.

Meet the nfrustangs

This Year: George is returning to the Mustangs as last

seasons starting catcher. He is a switch hitting contact type

hitter with better than average speed. George has worked hard

during the intramural season to improve his strength and

catching skil ls. George hopes his experience and

understanding of the Mustang pitching philosophy will push

him again into the starting role behind the plate. As a 2 year

varsity lefterman in football and one of the Mustangs top

receivers this year, he is hoping to use that athletic ability and

football mentality to force teams to take notice between the

chalked lines of the baseball f ield

2004: As a sophomore George earned the the role of starting

catcher for the Mustangs through his athletic skills and gutsy

play. George showed a knack to get on base with a .339

batting average, fourth highest on the team last year. He also

was tied for the lead in Hit By Pitches with 5. George also

showed he is more than a slash type hitter with an above .400

Slugging Percentage.

is a 2 year letterman in football for Shadow Ridge. Before

being re-zoned for Shadow Ridge H. S., George attended

Centennial where he played baseball in their JV program.

This Year: Craig is looking to fill a few roles for the

Mustangs this season. Craig is the type of player that can play

almost any position, and will see most of his time in the middle

of the infield. A good contact hitter with the ability to bunt

will hopefully bring a spark to the offense for the Mustangs.

Another major contribution by Craig will come from his role

as a middle reliever. He is going to be looked at to come in

games and keep the situation in hand for the Mustangs.

20042 Craig was one of two freshman letterman last year for

Shadow Ridge. Playing in a total of l5 games with 5 of them

being pitching appearances, Craig contributed to the success of

the team in many ways. By earning a letter in the 2004, Craig

put himself in position to accomplish a personal goal of being

one of the first 4 year letterman in the history of Shadow Ridge

Basebal l .

Before the Mustangs: Craig has spent the last two

summers playing for the Mustangs legion program. He has

Meet the Mrastangs

This Year: Billy is expected to start at second base for the

Mustangs this season. He has worked very hard during the off

season to improve his strength and skills as a middle infielder.

Billy has shown an improvement in both his arm strength and

range in the field. As a hitter Billy is a good contact hitter,

with an excellent eye for the strike zone. Billy has also shown

the ability to play the small ball game very well. Another

possible role for Bil ly this season may be as a reliever coming

out of the bullpen for the Mustangs. Billy has an excellent

baseball IQ, and prides himself as a team player.

2001: As a freshman last year Billy proved he can play with

the big boys. Billy became a fixture at the top of the line-up

usually bafting in the number 2 spot. From that spot in the

order Billy put himself in the top five in l0 different offensive

batting categories for the Mustangs. Most notably, Billy was

ranked second on the team in plate appearances, times on

base, most walks, and sacrifices. He also established the

single game record of 4 walks. One of Bil ly's bigest

accomplishments for the 2004 season was being the only

player named to the Mustang All Academic Team, as a varsity

player earning a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Before the Mustangs: Billy has played club ball for

many years in Las Vegas, most of them on the Southern

Nevada Bulldogs. The Bulldogs being ranked number I in the

expected to see some action on the mound, either as a spot

starter or closing role. Brandon's even temperament and strong

where he left off. K.C. is expected to be the Mustangs starting

shoftstop, and bat somewhere in the middle of the line-up.

K.C. shows exceptional grit and determination and is one of

the silent leaders of the team. Defensively he seems to have a

more solid on routine balls as well as the the more spectacular

plays. K.C. has shown to be one of the Mustangs more

productive hitters with both the ability to hit for average and

power. He is expected to be in a position to drive in RB['s and

Dear Mustang Supporters and Friends,

Mustang Baseball is working very hard to build a strong tradition both on the

field and off. Heading into my second season as Head Coach, I'm looking forward to

the challenges ahead. SRHS should be a place in which our student/athletes feel

proud to be a part of the program as welr as feeling privileged to don the Mustang

Baseball uniform.

One of the keys to building a successful program is to establish strong

relationships with the community and friends of the Team. I truely believe that in

order to know where you are going, you have to understand where you are nowand

where you have been. We would like to thank everyone who has helped Mustang

Baseball and who has helped us realized where we are coming from. with your

continued support and help Mustang Baseball is headed in the right direction' once

again, thank you for your support and Go MUSTANGS !

Sincerely,

Steve Barnson

Head Baseball Coach

The Mustang Baseball program takes an active role in the community each year.

This past year saw the beginning of what is hoped to become a yearly tradition atShadow Ridge H. S. The baseball and softball programs teamed up to do their part

in giving back to the community. They organized the first annual Spring Swingfor Charity. Players from both programs worked hard to sell tickets to the eventwhich was high-lighted by a softball game between the varsity baseball and thevarsity softball players. It was a fun way for the players to blow off some stream

after the season, and at the same time help raise money for a local charity. Last

fli years sponsor charity was the ShadeTree Foundation of Southern Nevada. "It just feels good to go out and do something

for someone else. Student/athletes at Shadow Ridge are treated so well by the people

of this community, so it is nice to give something back." Billy D'Arienzo, Mustanginfielder.

Last years Spring Swing for Charity was such a huge success the baseball programset a goal of doubling the size of the donation it makes to this years charity. If

anyone would like to join our efforts in helping those less fortunet in our communityplease contact someone from the baseball program, we would welcome anything you

can help with. Being a Mustang means being part of something much bigger thanbaseball.
