The Citadel Marksmanship Center

The Citadel Marksmanship Center, completed in December of 2005, gives the Bulldog rifl e program a top notch shooting facility that rivals any in the nation, let alone the Southeastern Air Rifl e Conference.

The new range saw its fi rst competitive action on the weekend of February 11-12, 2006, as The Citadel hosted a SEARC match and a NCAA sectional. The Citadel Marksmanship Center also hosted the SEARC Championships on February 25 and an open sectional on March 4 of 2006. The Bulldogs plan to bid on hosting the NCAA rifl e championships in the future.

“The opening of The Citadel Marksmanship Center is a new beginning for competitive rifl e at The Citadel,” said head coach William Smith. “This will

place our training on the same level as our Olympic shooters.”

“It’s a new beginning for a team with a history of winning on the nation-al level,” Smith continued.

The Citadel Marksmanship Center is the state-of-the-art facility in the SEARC and contains 16 points for smallbore/center fi re and air-rifl es at 50 feet.

2005-06 Outlook The Citadel rifl e team looks to build upon its recent success in the 2005-06 season. The Bulldogs have fi nished among the top three in the Southeastern Air Rifl e Conference (SEARC) every season since rifl e became a varsity sport again in 2001, including SEARC championships in 2001 and 2002. The Bulldogs fi nished third in the SEARC behind rivals and perennial contenders Birmingham Southern and N.C. State in 2005.

Head coach William Smith returns for his seventh year at the head of the rifl e program and fi elds a young but experienced team led by two impressive seniors. Evan Rishel, the men’s team captain, and Amara Atella, the women’s captain, provide not only experience and leadership but also excellence on the range. Atella tied for or claimed the best score on the Bulldogs team in four matches in 2004-05 while Rishel paced the Bulldogs in a win against Austin Peay to end the season, fi ring a score of 574.28. During the fall of 2005, either Rishel or Atella claimed the Bulldogs’ top score in all six of their matches. After promising freshman seasons, Kevin Medert and Steven Reis return for their sophomore campaigns. Medert fi nished out 2004-05 strong by tying Atella for the team’s leading score with a mark of 570 at the SEARC championships and paced the team at an NCAA match in Milledgeville, Ga., the same week-

end by fi ring a 550. Reis had the best or tied for the top score on the Bulldogs team in three matches during his knob year. The Bulldogs said goodbye to four-year letterman Vanessa Swan after the fall portion

of the 2005-06 season, as she graduated in December of 2005. Swan, a double major in political science and criminal justice, completed her studies a semester early.

A reason for major optimism in 2005-06 and the future is the completion of The Citadel Marks-manship Center. The brand new shooting range is the state-of-the-art facility in the SEARC and will open up many opportunities for the Bulldogs, including a chance to host the NCAA rifl e champion-

ships in the future. “This brand new range gives us an opportunity to achieve the same training as the best teams in the

country,” Smith said.

The Bulldogs will host four matches during the 2005-06 season, including the SEARC championships on Feb. 25. Wofford comes to The Citadel October 29-30, the Bulldogs host the sixth SEARC match of the season Feb. 11-12, and an open sec-tional will also take place at The Citadel Marksmanship Center on March 4.

Head Coach William Smith Native Charlestonian William C. Smith has made great strides with the rifl e program, moving it from a club sport back to an intercollegiate sport. Smith, 56, has guided The Citadel’s rifl e club team the past six years and serves as both the men’s and women’s head coach. Under the direction of Smith, The Citadel fi nished third in the SEARC in 2005 behind Birmingham Southern and North Carolina State. The Bulldogs fi nished second in the SEARC in 2004, and ended the 2003 season as runner-up in the conference with fi ve Academic All-American shooters. The Citadel had a one-loss season and conference championship in 2002. The 2001 season marked the fi rst time the team won the SEARC Championships since it was reinstated as a varsity sport. The Citadel’s last championship was in 1999. Also in 2001, Smith led the Bulldog shooters to individual and team NCAA sectionals, com-peting against teams from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Smith’s goal for the team is to become an annual participant in postseason play. To help reach this goal, The Citadel has completed construction of a new indoor shoot-ing range facility. The Citadel Marksmanship Center is the state-of-the-art facility in the SEARC and contains 16 points for smallbore/center fi re and air-rifl es at 50 feet. The Bulldogs plan to bid on hosting the NCAA rifl e championships in the future.

Rifl e Scoring System

Each team declares four shooters before each match. Those four scores will count towards the overall team score.

The Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa was born in Springfi eld, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jackson-ville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel, Rosa was the starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force. A command fi ghter pilot with more than 3,600 fl ying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange offi cer fl ying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in Georgia, Idaho, New Mexico, South Carolina, and South Korea. He served as inspector general for Pacifi c Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokes-man for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He has also studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the De-fense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has fl own the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircrafts, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130. On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th president. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (’03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the cur-riculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson begins his sixth year as the Direc-tor of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletics experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fi fth athletics director in The Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the fi ve previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his fi rst fi ve years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robin-son’s skills as a proven fundraiser have already benefi ted The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past fi ve years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the fi rst two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served fi ve years as a Bull-dog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head bas-ketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for fi ve years, increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Confer-ence men’s basketball history to earn league Coach-of-the-Year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fi fth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson concluded a six-year term serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most infl uential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a bachelor of science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, W.Va. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and seven grandchildren.
