In 2005/06 Canuck Place Children’s Hospice reached a number

of milestones including the completion of our Strategic Plan,

celebration of our 10th Anniversary, the launch of our inaugural

Gift of Time Gala, and completion of an Accreditation pilot.

As a result of the direct input from families, donors, staff and

volunteers, the Strategic Plan: 2005- 2008: Setting a Course for the Future,

the organization’s future goals and vision have been succinctly

defined. It is this ‘road map’ for the future that will guide us to

further our programs and service delivery to British Columbia’s

children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The

input of families will be formally recognized with the creation of

the Family Advisory Committee reporting directly to the Hospice

Society Board of Directors.

It was a busy year with a number of anniversary related functions

and events designed to celebrate and mark our 10th Anniversary

of operations as North America’s first free-standing children’s

hospice. Of note was the Family Reunion Concert held at the

end of October as a way to include and welcome back many of

our past volunteers, staff and donors who have supported us at

various points during our ten years. The 10th Anniversary activities

culminated with a rededication ceremony of the Hospice by the

founding members of the Hospice and the annual winter holiday

lighting of the house.

As a way to diversify our revenue stream and contribute to our goal

of financial sustainability, on October 13th, 2005, we hosted our

first gala fundraising dinner and auction. The Gift of Time Gala

included a live auction of celebrity watches and entertainment by a

special musical guest. The success of this inaugural event was due to

the combined partnership of a dedicated group of volunteers, staff

and the generous contribution of donors. Adding to the financial

maturity of the charity was the establishment of our Endowment

Trust Fund invested with the Vancouver Foundation.

2005/06 also marks the end of a number of long-serving Board

of Directors’ terms – Tahir Ayub, Peter Jeffrey, Daryl Simpson,

Sharon Toohey and Wayne Duzita. We are grateful for all of their

many contributions and wish them the best in their future endeavors.

Despite all the activities, events and projects, our focus has remained,

and will always remain, firmly rooted in supporting children and

families in ‘embracing life’ and providing them necessary supports

and services to live each day to the fullest.

On behalf of everyone involved with Canuck Place Children’s

Hospice, thank you for your contributions, however varied.

Wayne Duzita,

Hospice Board Chair

Filomena Nalewajek,

Executive Director

Canuck Place is a story of courage and vision, and a shining example of the good that comes from individuals and organizations

seeing a need in their community and working together to fill it. In this case, there was a need to provide another care option for children

with life-threatening illnesses and their families–an option that would give families the added

flexibility to access hospice care when hospital or home care could no longer meet their needs.

Message from Wayne Duzita, Hospice

Board Chair & Filomena Nalewajek,

Executive Director
