First-year head coach Bill Lynch welcomes34 lettermen and 10 returning starters as theTigers prepare to open their first season underthe direction of the man with over 25 years ofcoaching experience including 13 as a head coach.

“I am really looking forward to this sea-son,” Lynch said. “This program has been verycompetitive and battled for the conferencechampionship in an outstanding league.”

“Evaluation and finding the right pieces willbe very important this year.”

OFFENSEThe Tigers return four starters on the of-

fensive side including three wide receivers.DePauw’s offense completed the 2003 cam-paign ranked 40th in Division III with a schoolrecord 415.2 yards per game.

Junior quarterback Ross Wiethoff, whilenot a starter, took nearly half the snaps andput together solid numbers in 2003. Wiethoffhad a 134.01 efficiency rating and rushed for566 yards and an average of 7.6 yards per carry, while equaling the team high with seven touch-downs. His rushing total was the most by aDePauw quarterback in nearly 30 years. Provid-ing competition is senior Karl Odenwald whoplayed briefly in three games last season.

Finding a replacement at running back willbe a top priority as Jackson Rust and Matt Kinggraduated last year after combining for over1,100 yards in 2003 and 3,300 in their careers.Top candidates for the job are senior MattMcMahon, junior John Michels and sopho-more Jason Murphy.

Senior fullback Chris Brolsma had just sixcarries last year, but likely will see more actionin 2004 as the Tigers utilize the fullback to agreater extent.

The offensive line returns only Dave Eberleat left guard after he started all 10 games in2003. Juniors Chad Homan and JamieWaymouth filled in for injured players duringthe season. Homan started three games at rightguard and Waymouth started five contests atright tackle.

The battle for spots on the line includesseniors Carl Albrecht, Jack Avery, Patrick Croner,Jon Gratz J.P. Kinerk, Braden Nordman andJustin Wissing. Croner was the DePauw fresh-man of the year in 2001 as an offensive line-man and played defense last year.

A strong receiving corps returns headed bysenior Jamarcus Shephard. A consensus all-America kick returner for the Tigers in 2003,Shephard led the squad with 69 catches and783 yards. Truly a multipurpose threat,Shephard also rushed for 49 yards on 14 carriesand finished second in the nation in kickoffreturn average at 34.7 yards per return includ-ing a pair of touchdowns. He also completedtwo passes including one for a 75-yard scoreagainst Hanover. Shephard’s 1,491 all-purposeyards last season ranked third in DePauw his-tory.

Junior Brian Culp, a second team all-SCACperformer last year, is also back after a cam-paign that included 36 catches for 663 yardsand 18.4 yards per catch with a team-high sixtouchdown receptions.

Seniors Kyle McGrath and Torey Rauch alsoprovide veteran leadership. Rauch hauled in 18catches in 2003 while McGrath grabbed seven.Sophomore David Araiza is another playerwho could see plenty of time early.

At least three players figure to battle for thetight end position including senior Chris Will, junior Chase Jonason and sophomore Bran-don Horn. Jonason caught three passes in theseason opener last season before sustaining aninjury which kept him out of action most ofthe season.

“We want to be a very balanced offensivefootball team,” Lynch said. “One of thestrengths last year was balance and it’s some-thing we want to continue this season.”

DEFENSEThe Tigers return a solid defensive line with

starters Eric Rausch and Joseph Di Salvo backat tackle spots. Also competing at tackle is jun-ior Rob Camfield.

DePauw will need to replace both starters atdefensive end from last season, but the Tigerswill get a big lift with the return of junior DustinHertel who missed the entire 2003 campaign

Junior quarterback Ross Wiethoff took just under half thesnaps in 2003 and rushed for more yards than any DePauwsignal caller in nearly 30 years.

The DePauw defense returns five starters and several playerswith game experience.

due to injury. Hertel shared the team lead andtied for second in the conference with sevensacks as a freshman.

Juniors Darron Lasley and Jesse Brutkiewiczas well as sophomore Luis Davila will also con-tend for the end positions.

The Tigers need to replace all three startersat the linebacker slots. However they do sofrom a group of players that saw considerableaction in 2003.

Senior Matt Koch returns with experienceas a starter in three games at the beginning ofhis junior season. Others battling for spotsinclude seniors Michael Elkins and Devin Barras well as junior Aaron Key and sophomoreRob Farrow.

With the departure of a pair of four-yearstarting cornerbacks in David Blackburn andJustin Tillis, the Tigers will have some holes tofill in the secondary.

Returning as starting safeties from a yearago are seniors Cory Partlow and ChrisLambring. Partlow was second on the squadwith 61 tackles, while Lambring was sixth with41. Among those competing are juniors BenBrown and Curran Clark and sophomore GregSylvester.

Senior Obinna Ugokwe will move tocornerback after starting three games at safetylast season. Others who will be competing in-clude junior Andrew Huff and sophomoresBrendan Berigan, Felix Felder and Eric Lewis.

“Overall I think the defensive line is strong,we have some good, young linebackers and wewill need to find a couple of corners.”

KICKING GAMESophomore Tyler Mallory returns as the

Tigers’ placekicker after seeing limited action ayear ago. Mallory did connect on all three extrapoints on the season.

Handling the punting duties will be eitherWiethoff who averaged nearly 37 yards per punta year ago and earned all-SCAC first team hon-ors or senior Bill Riley who saw limited actionas a junior.

SCHEDULEOnce again the Tigers’ schedule is among

the most challenging in the country. Themonth of September alone includes gamesagainst teams that combined to post a 28-12record with Hope and Trinity earning berthsinto the NCAA Division III Championship. The campaign concludes with the 111th meet-ing with rival Wabash in the annual MononBell game.

“We have a quality schedule,” Lynch said.“We open on the road with a good conferenceteam (Rhodes), face two tough non-conferencegames and then Trinity.” “That will be a chal-lenge.”

Senior Jamarcus Shephard was involved in each of DePauw’s six longest plays in 2003 with each covering at least 74 yards.
