A good book desig ner will develop a special affinity with the conte nt they a re ent ru sted to 'shape', and through thi s they assist authors in connecting and communicating w ith readers. This yea r the Australian Publishers Association Book Design Awa rds will celebrate the creati ve efforts of authors and designers by holding the awards d uring the Sydney Writers' Festi va l.
T he annual Book Design Awa rds continues to g row and to attract more entries each yea r. The 522 entries this yea r, ac ross four ma jor categories and eighteen sub-categories, presented the thirteen judges with a chall enging but exciting task.
Judges assessed the entries in the week befo re judging day, to prepare a shortlist of up to
ten entries per catego ry - no easy task and not all obeyed! O n judging day each judge's shortlist hit the table (o r the sc reen) and discussion from the many ind ustry professionals - representing design, edi to ri al, production, marketing, sales and spec iali sts in education, children 's books and multimed ia- ensued.
The judges focussed throughout the long day on the fo llowing key cri te ria:
- Does the book achieve the design brief with rega rd to mark et and price ? - Does the legibility, format and organisation sa tisfy the functional requirements of the reade r? - Was there ori ginality and Aair within the constra ints inherent in the titl e~
They we re also asked to identify what was unique about the desig n and why one book met the criteri a better than another. Articul atin g these dec isions was chall enging given that the im medi ate reaction to a design is generall y a gut or emoti ona I one.
'Mood' was d iscussed extensively as an important clement to connect a potential reader/ buye r to a book and its promised 'world ' or journey. Ma n y of the winning designs had a cl ear edge in this area .
Typogra phy was another standout element in the winning designs. With the plethora of fonts ava ilable to des igners these days, it is a skill to perfectl y match mood , content and audience.
A nother challenge in judging was to remain objecti ve when comparing hardcover and paperback formats, g ive n the tac til e ad va ntage of hardcove rs in contributing to the ove rall 'feel' and presence of a book.
Although marketeers may di sagree, the inclusion of logos on the front cove rs of books often compromised otherwise good cove r designs.
There were many wonderful designs, however in ge neral th ere was an overuse of stock images again this yea r. When custom-made imagery was used , such as in the embroidered title for Adultery, it was very refreshing. This ove ruse may be linked to the lure of the 'safety net' approach to publishers' design briefs. Are publishers really encouraging risk-taking and bravery in their briefs ? Could publishers be braver and all ow designers to lead the way more often ~

Many of the winning designs prove that risktaking can have a strong pay-off.
In the children's categories judges often found the internal designs to be much stronger and more engaging than the covers, which made judging difficult. The best designs had a synergy between the cover and the internals. Several designers commented on the increasingly tight design budgets for children's books. This factor was sadly reflected in the standard of many entries.
r n the education categories the judges were impressed with the standard of design, especially given the huge number of pedagogical elements designers need to address to meet educational outcomes. The increasing usc of colour (possibly due to reduced printing costs) was evident particularly in tertiary titles which, when put to good use, really enhanced the userfriendliness of designs.
The Joyce Nicholson Award was not awarded this year. It is recommended that the criteria be reviewed to be clearer and to encourage entries.
Congratulations to all the designers. The continuing high standard of design is a testament to the commitment and talent in the Australian industry and to the Australian Publishers Association Rook Design Awards for recognising and promoting excellence in design.

I 1111\ f'r ~ is a graphic designer who has worked in publishing for the last 13 years, including Art Director roles at Rolling Stone Magazine, HQ Magazine and MTV. She designed Peter Carey's backlist, has worked in London at Pentagram Design Studio, designed covers for Faber and Faber and is currently the Creative Director at HarperCollins Australia.
l-et, '\iu.,.:nt is a freelance designer working for book publishers including Murdoch Books, New Holland Publishers and McGraw-Hill Education. Holding a Bachelor of Design from University of Technology, Sydney, she has been working as a book designer for 12 years almost exclusively on non fiction titles. Last year Peta won the Australian Publishers Association design award for Best Designed Tertiary and Further Education Book.
\nntlte ~~ 1 o has been involved in the booktrade for many years, working variously in bookshops, as a sales rep and as an editor for a number of publishing houses. She is currently a publisher at Allen &
Unwin. Her list is varied and ranges from literary fiction to health and lifestyle.

is now the store manager for the prestigious Books Kinokuniya, Sydney's largest global bookstore.

Manager at Allen & Unwin for the last II years. Prior to this she worked as Art Director and then
Production Manager for Studio Magazines and produced the first six issues of Not Only Black a11d White.
( 'ht·n • ' ld has been the Marketing Manager
at Random House for almost three years. Before joining Random, Cheryl work ed as a bookseller/ buyer for more than 15 years, including stints as a children's book buyer for Dillons in the UK and as national book buyer for Myer. She has also run her own book and music retail business.

Division. She has a wealth of experience in the industry, having spent three years in the UK work
ing in trade publishing, before moving to Austra lia in 1992 when she began her career in educationa l publishing. Vicki understands the vast complexities

Longman and then to a similar role at Horwitz Education. As part of his current role Stephen is still involved in the daily publishing functions as
publisher, along with a variety of other activities that help keep him attuned to the primary schools educational market. It is this variety of tasks and challenges that keep Stephen so energised about his work and the book publishing industry.

Kate was a teacher librarian for 10 years and an infants teacher in Australia and the UK. Kate is the
recipient of the Lady Cutler Award, a NSW award for se rvices to chi ldren's literature. She is a pastpresident of the Children's Book Counci l (NSW)

~tnt 1 tntt:r IS enJoymg his eighth year in the multimedia industry, currently as the Interactive Director at ANTART Design. Prior to ANTART Steven worked independently and as a contractor on many projects for many studios and agencies. His design work has included websites for Nintendo Australia, Fujicolor Australia and Pacific Publications magazine, as well as 3D modelling and animation for Meriton and Cable Cage Systems. Most recently with ANTART Steven developed the multimedia campaign for the re-branding of Australian Radio Network, which included e-invitations, a CD-ROM, website and various presentations.
x of Suture Net Design been working as a freelance multimedia/web designer since 1998 for a number of clients including Arts On Tour, Flix Animation, Freshweb and Soma-CG. He completed a BFA Honours in Photomedia (Digital Imaging) at the College of Fine Arts, Sydney (2000) and has worked on a number of varied projects, from building a series of children's games for Kids Around the House (Sydney Opera House), to interactive CDs for various BMX stars in the US, through Pyromedia. Recently he completed the Suburban Edge website for the Australian Centre for Photography.

The word 'divine' was much bandied about as the judges pored over Plenty. With its gorgeous cool
colour scheme and fabulous photography, it was a clear standout winner. The consideration invested in
the production details, such as the earthy paper stock and the tactile quality of the deckle edge, cleverly
serves to enhance the beauty of the design. Comments such as 'I couldn't stop thinking about it' are
testimony to the impact of the design.

Could it be any more Italian? Sophisticated but playful, the cover of Something Italian features
graphic pasta references against a simple brown/red colour scheme- refreshingly different to the food
photography approach of more conventional cookbook covers. The quirky endpapers and generous
format contribute to the relaxed feeling of the design, capturing the much-enjoyed experience of eating
Italian food.

Again, the number and quality of entries in this category is a positive sign for the industry. Capable of
doing 'serious' through to 'whimsy', Miriam Rosenbloom's portfolio was a standout due to its diversity.
All of the designs convey a strong sense of mood and feature distinctive typographic styles, clearly
demonstrating her versatility and ability to respond to a range of briefs.

The lavish productions in this category were a challenge to differentiate. The original and clean design
of Crossing Country features well-sized images in good proportion to the surrounding text and white
space. The ahsence of text on the cover allows the art to speak for itself. The very individual design of
Place Made conveys a strong sense of mood through a subtle cover, elegant print artworks and gorgeous
specially milled paper.

The high standard of design and strong target-market appeal of Quirky Comics impressed the judges.
Comprising a CD-ROM and an accompanying product booklet, the fun comic-book format complements
the irreverent humour and suits its target audience perfectly. The Flash platform consistently delivers a
high level of design, featuring simple, brightly coloured layouts complemented by great typography and
clear navigation pathways.

The inherent challenge for the judges was differentiating the quality of the design from the quality
of the photographs/illustrations, making it a difficult category to judge. The unique design of The Peril

Overall there has been a move back in this category to a cleaner design structure with a real focus on
student-friendly text. Young readers need predictable design that is easy to navigate. The category is still
split between texts and what could be described as library reference books. The library reference books
are using a consistent sophisticated formula. The Fast Tracks III series stood out with its lively design that
reinforces the text type features clearly to the student. The designs across the series were consistent and
invited the reader's involvement. The New Signpost Maths student texts meet the challenge of a crowded
curriculum using white space and colour effectively to make the content appear less threatening.

The texts placed on the shortlist in this category avoided the trap of over-using icons, colour and other
pedagogical features. Many designers fell headlong into this minefield, producing cluttered texts. Despite
this, the standards were high with a trend towards four-colour texts. Genau! set a very high benchmark
for the language genre. The cover is incredibly original and modern and the internals guide the student
along a colourful and well-structured route. The font choice was excellent.
Dance: Count Me In! excited the judges to the point of jigging with its very strong two-by-four
colour design. The design is very contemporary and achieves a perfect match between topic and target
audience.

The challenges for tertiary textbook designers continue to mount. The demand for more sophisticated
instructional design and strong visual pedagogical tools is apparent in the current crop of books. The
key challenge for designers seems to be packing more content into a smaller number of pages {due to
Sales wanting smaller books), while at the same time making the pages appear spacious and uncluttered!
Consumer Behaviour manages to balance all these needs without being over designed, it uses four colours
effectively with a retro seventies feel appropriate for the target audience.

The overall design quality was high in this category, but it was difficult to judge due to the diversity of
styles. The internal design of Girlforce impressed the judges with its high energy, accessibility and great
use of colour. Cleverly capturing a sense of spontaneity and adventure, the Penny Pollard Series has been
given a fresh, vibrant and very contemporary re-design.

Despite a couple of standout titles, the general feeling was that current designs aren't helping to sell books
in this area. Angst-ridden, edgy and depressing seems to be the formulaic approach. Combining strong
mood and tone, the originality of Sleep Rough Tonight attracts attention. The complete package is well
resolved and cleverly balances simplicity with sophistication.

Clarity, cleanliness and accessibility were important benchmarks for the judges who debated long and
hard on the interplay of design features and illustration style (struggling not to be swayed by the quality
of the latter). Apart from a couple of exceptions, the internal designs tended to be stronger than the cover
designs in this category.
Unusual, beautiful and delightful, Henrietta enchanted the judges with a well-resolved design
from cover to cover. The internal design makes great use of two colours and manages to juggle lots of
elements without looking cluttered. Little Lucie's Diary demonstrates great attention to design detail
throughout the entire package.

Narrowing down to a shortlist proved challenging in this very strong category. Bookseller judges
commented that strong design has made books in this area 'a joy to sell', and that publishers are 'getting
it right'. Handsome and gorgeous throughout, The Book of Lies seems to mark the beginning of a new
trend, taking a more mature approach to design for this market. The funky and well-integrated design
of Spiky, Spunky, My Pet Monkey was also a hit with the judges.
