The defending Southern Conference ChampionCitadel Bulldog wrestling team, which is comingoff of its second straight 13 win season and atop-25 finish, looks poised to make an evenbigger impression on the national scene this year.The Bulldogs return 13 of 15 letter winnersincluding nine of 10 starters and five NCAAqualifiers from last season. The team swept the

SouthernConferencewith fivewins and nolosses andtook theSoContournamentby 10points.

Last year’sSoConChampionship,whichincludedindividualchampionshipsby fourBulldog

grapplers, was the first for The Citadel since the1967 season. It was also the first championshipfor 2004 SoCon Wrestling Coach of the Year, RobHjerling, who garnered the honor in only his fifthseason at The Citadel.

Last year’s NCAA Qualifiers include one at-largebid – Sean Markey (133) – and four SouthernConference individual champions – Keith Clifton(174), Billy Linane (285), Dan Thompson (157),and 2004 SoCon Wrestler of the Year RyanMcClester (125).

Joining the already successful veteran squad isthe Bulldogs’ highly touted recruiting class whichincludes 19 individual state placers, a total of 10state championship titles, and at least onewrestler in each weight class. Freshmen looking

to earn mat-time for the defending SouthernConference regular season and tournamentchampions include Aaron Brown (195), twinbrothers Matt (125) and Billy Bullwinkel (125),Clinton Degain (165), Chris Humphries (141),Kyle Kimrey (133) and Robert Sammons (149)

Also joining the Bulldog grapplers this year isfirst-year assistant coach Ryan Lange who comesto Charleston after a brilliant college wrestlingcareer at Purdue where he set the career winsmark with 130. Lange finished his time as aBoilermaker by placing fifth at the 2004 NCAAChampionships last march.

The Citadel will get its first test of the season onNovember 20 when they travel to Ithica, NY toparticipate in the Cornell Body Bar Invitational.The Bulldogs will also play host to the 2005 All-Academy championship on February 5, 2005 inMcAlister Field House. The Citadel’s dual meetschedule will include six home matches againstVMI, Central Michigan, North Carolina, UNC-Greensboro, Campbell and Gardner-Webb. TheCadets will host their top rival and SoCon foeVMI when the Keydets come to Charleston onFebruary 3, 2005 for the Battle in the Barracks.

The Citadel will move several wrestlers to newweight classes to take full advantage of theirdepth. Wrestlers changing weights include seniorKeith Clifton -last seasons Southern ConferenceChampion at 174 pounds- who will move backup to 184 pounds. Clifton last wrestled at 184 in2002-03 when he earned his first SoCon title as asophomore. Also moving up is senior SeanMarkey, who earned an NCAA at-large bid at 133pounds after finishing second at the SoConChampionships last year. Markey will move up tothe 141-pound division.

With these changes 2004-05 looks to be one ofthe best season in The Citadel’s wrestling historyas well as another banner year for coach Hjerlingand his squad.

Rob Hjerling, 2004 Southern Conference Coach ofthe Year and a 1994 graduate of American University, is inhis sixth season as head coach of The Citadel’s wrestlingprogram.

Hjerling has an overall record of 43-39-2, and acombined 26-6 over the last two seasons. After going 2-11-2 and 1-4 in the SoCon (5th of 6) his first season, Hjerlingboosted the Bulldogs to 13-3 and 5-0 in the SoCon (1st of 6)in 2004.

In 2004 the Bulldogs matched their highest everwinning percentage (.813) on their way to the school’s firstSoCon wrestling championship since 1967. (Hjerling’sgrapplers included four individual conference champions inRyan McClester (125), Dan Thompson (157), Keith Clifton(174) and Billy Linane (Hwt), all earning automatic bids tothe NCAA Championship, while Sean Markey (133) earnedone of the leagues at-large bids to bring the total number ofBulldogs in the NCAA’s to five.)

Hjerling directed the third place 2003 squad to thehighest winning percentage, .813, in school history. TheHjerling led group saw two members, Keith Clifton (184) andBilly Linane (Hwt), win SoCon championships, while sixothers grappled to finish in the top three in the SoCon. Withtwo conference champs and three runners-up, the Bulldogssent five members of the 2003 team to the NCAA’s in KansasCity.

The 2003 squad also saw two grapplers make theirway into the national rankings. The 133-pound Sean Markeyfinished the season ranked as high as 18th nationally by TheWrestling Mall, while 149-pound Travis Piccard saw hisname make it to 19th late in the season by the samepublication.

In 2001-02, the Bulldogs entered numeroustournaments with NCAA powerhouses and also wrestleddual meets versus Top 25 teams. Hjerling led The Citadel toscoring the most points since the SoCon’s 1967Championship Team and best dual meet record since 1991.The Bulldogs had seven conference placers, five finalists,one SoCon champion and one NCAA qualifier.

During his first season (‘99-’00) he had fourconference placers, one conference finalist and one NCAAqualifier. The level of competition drastically increased withHjerling at the helm. The team managed to go 5-15 and 2-3

SoCon (4th of 6). In 2000-2001, there were six conferenceplacers, two conference finalists, one SoCon champion andtwo NCAA qualifiers. The team was ranked 16th in theNational Wrestling Coaches Association’s Academic Top 25.

Hjerling came to The Citadel after serving the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach at George Mason University,where he helped the Patriots to a runner-up finish in theColonial Athletic Association while coaching four NCAAqualifiers. Following Hjerling’s departure, George Masonhad one of their best seasons yet, showing the superbrecruiting that had been done during Hjerling’s time there.

He spent the previous two seasons as an assistantcoach at his alma mater. Hjerling coached five NCAAqualifiers during those two seasons. He got his start incoaching at Manheim Township High School in Lancaster, PA,serving the 1995-96 campaigns as an assistant coach.

As a senior at American University, Hjerling posted a28-4 overall record. In addition, the Lancaster, PA nativecaptured theColonial AthleticAssociation’s158-poundweight classchampionship,garnered CAAMost OutstandingWrestler honorsand earned aberth in theNCAAChampionships.He completed hiswrestling careerwith 69 victories.

Hjerlingis married to theformer MeganHoban, whocoaches women’ssoccer at TheCitadel.

Jeff Ragan, a former all-American atOklahoma State, is in his fifth season as anassistant wrestling coach at The Citadel.

Ragan graduated from Oklahoma State inMay of 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree inmathematics. A four-year letterman in wrestling,Ragan was a member of three Big XII Conferencechampionship teams while posting an overallrecord of 101-43. As a senior, the Englewood, FLnative won 31 matches and captured the Big XIIConference individual crown in the 125-poundweight class and finished sixth at the NCAAChampionships to earn all-America honors.

A four-time Big XII All-Academic Teamselection, Ragan was named the Oklahoma StateMale Student-Athlete-of-the-Year in 2000 and wastabbed to the National Wrestling CoachesAssociation’s Academic All-America team. Inaddition, he became the 19th wrestler inOklahoma State history to register 100 careervictories.

Ragan also was a four-time freestyle All-American. In 1997 he captured a FreestyleEspior National Champion title and became aJunior World Team member, where he placed inthe top 10.

As a prep star, Ragan posted a 103-5overall record at Lemon Bay High School, makingthree finalist appearances and winning a pair ofFlorida state championships, while earningOutstanding Wrestler honors as a junior andsenior.

Ragan finished graduate school at TheCitadel in December of 2003 and also works inThe Citadel’s mathematics department. He ismarried to the former Andrea Denise Clark. Thecouple has one daughter named Alli.

Marc Hoffer begins his second seasonassisting coach Rob Hjerling and The Citadel wrestingteam. Hoffer brings valuable national experience to aBulldog team poised to make a move on the nationalscene.

Hoffer, the all-time victory leader at AmericanUniversity, was a three-time Colonial AthleticAssociation (CAA) Champion, as well as a three-timeNCAA qualifier. He has two top-12 NCAA Tournamentfinishes and was ranked as high as fifth amongDivision I wrestlers.

While at American, Hoffer was named the1999 CAA Wrestler of the Year and was a two-timehonoree as CAA Tournament Outstanding Wrestler.

Hoffer came to The Citadel last season aftercompeting internationally with the NWCA internationalteam and at the East Regional Olympic Trials.

Ryan Lange starts his first season with theBulldogs after an illustrious collegiate career at PurdueUniversity.

The two-time All-American holds the recordfor most career wins and takedowns in PurdueUniversity history. Last season, Lange won hissecond Big Ten individual Championship and went onto finish fifth in the NCAA Championships in the 174-pound weight class. A four-time NCAA qualifier,Lange is also a three-time national freestyle All-American and former Ohio high school champion andrunner-up.

Lange’s wealth of experience and knowledgewill be put to use coaching the upper weight classes.

Lange is currently attending graduate schoolat The Citadel’s College of Graduate and ProfessionalStudies.

Charlottesville, VA - The Citadel Wrestling team addedthe 2004 Southern Conference Tournament Championshipto its list of accomplishments and Head Coach Rob Hjerlingwas named the SoCon Coach of the year as the Cadetsheld an eight-point advantage going into the finals andfought off a surge by Chattanooga to win the crown by 10.The Bulldogs also advanced five grapplers to the NCAAfinals in St. Louis, MO, including four Southern Conferenceindividual champions.

In the 125-pound weight class, No. 1 seeded Bulldog juniorRyan McClester took a bye in the first round. In the secondround, McClester won with a 6-1 decision over JuanSanchez, the No. 5 seed from VMI. In the final McClesterfaced Chattanooga’s second seeded Matt Pitts. The juniorfrom Lugoff, SC scored first with a takedown in the firstminute but gave his opponent one point for locking hands.Pitts tied the match at two with an escape. Pitts took thebottom to begin the second period and scored another pointwith a quick escape. Pitts led 3-2 entering the third.McClester took the bottom in the third and tied the matchat three with an escape six seconds into the period andwent ahead 5-3 with a takedown with 8 seconds left. Pittsescaped with three seconds left, but it was not enough asMcClester won with a 5-4 decision.

133-pound junior Sean Markey took his 2 seed bye in thefirst round and won by a 10-2 major decision over sixthseeded Terreyl Williams from Appalachian State in thesecond round. Markey then squared off againstChattanooga’s Josh Keefe, the top seed in the 133-pound

class. Markey scored first with a takedown at the 1:30mark, but Keefe escaped in the final seconds of the first totrail 2-1. Markey took the bottom to start the second andescaped quickly to extend his lead to two, he added twomore points with a takedown with 45 seconds left in thesecond. Keefe reversed with 25 left to end the secondperiod down 5-3. The Moc junior started the final period inthe down position and escaped to narrow Markey’s lead toone. Keefe went ahead 6-5 with a takedown with 5seconds left, but Markey’s riding time advantage took thepair to overtime tied at 6 a piece. Keefe scored thedeciding points 28 seconds into the extra frame to win byan 8-6 decision.

In the first round, freshman Levi Duyn -the fifth seed in the141-pound weight class- lost 6-4 to fourth seeded ScottErvin of Appalachian State. In the consolation semifinalsDuyn lost by a 13-10 major decision to David Metzger, theNo. 3 seed from VMI.

In the 149-pound weight class, second seeded sophomoreTravis Piccard had a first round bye, but lost by an 8-4decision to eventual champ Sam Alvarenga - the 3 seedfrom VMI - in the second round. In the consolationsemifinal Piccard defeated Greensboro’s Nate Berrymanby a 9-0 major decision. Piccard capped off his day with athird place finish when he defeated Chattanooga’s JacobHarris 12-3.

157-pound Bulldog sophomore Dan Thompson took a firstround bye and then won by a fall in 52 seconds overChattanooga’s T.J. Sayers in the second round. In the final,Thompson faced a No. 3 seed in VMI’s Chris Hardy.Despite a lot of action, neither wrestler managed to scorein the first period, and they entered the second tied at zero.Thompson took the bottom to start the second and scoredthe match’s first point with an escape; he followed hisescape with a takedown to extend his lead to three. Hardyescaped with 0:43 left in the period, but Thompson scored atakedown just before the period ended to go up 5-1. TheBulldog sophomore took the down position to open the finalperiod and escaped to extend his lead to five points, headded a takedown with 0:45. Thompson allowed Hardy toescape in an attempt to gain a major decision, but Hardyscored a takedown and the match ended in a 9-4 decisionin favor of Thompson.

Junior Mike Martinez, fourth seed in the 165, opened upwith a 17-8 major decision over Marcus Boyd, the fifthseed from Davidson. In the second round Martinez lost bya 10-2 major decision to top seeded Jon Sioredas fromChattanooga. In the consolation semifinal the junior fromTemple Terrace, FL downed VMI’s P.J. Neumann, 4-2.Martinez lost a 7-5 overtime decision to Greensboro’s KeithRiter in the consolation final.

Citadel Senior Keith Clifton received a first round bye withhis No. 1 seed in the 174-pound weight class and defeatedDavidson’s Marc O’Hair by a 10-0 major decision in thesecond round. In the final, Clifton was matched againstChattanooga’s Josh Ward. The first points of the bout werescored by Clifton, who managed a takedown 0:45 into thematch. Clifton worked Ward for the remainder of theopening period and entered the second with a 2-0advantage and 2:15 on the riding clock. The second periodbegan with both grapplers in the neutral position and endedthe same way. Clifton began the third on the bottom andscored an escape to go up by three. The junior fromColleyville, TX scored his final takedown with eightseconds left and with the riding time point won a 6-0decision to clinch the team title for The Citadel.

In the 184-pound weight class No. 4 seeded Bulldogsophomore John Dickerson won by decision 6-0 over No. 5seeded Chris Toukonen from Appalachian state in the firstround, but dropped to the consolation bracket when he lostby a 15-7 major decision to Chattanooga’s top seeded JohnDavis. In his consolation semifinal match, the sophomorefrom Eaton Rapids, MI pinned Davidson’s Pat Scandling in3:26. Dickerson captured the consolation final and thirdplace with a 6-5 decision over Greensboro’s Joe Lowe.

Citadel senior Jordan Everett, fourth seed in the 197-poundweight class, began the day with a first round 6-1 decisionover fifth seed Nick Lorenzano from Chattanooga. In thesemifinal match, Everett lost 3-2 in double overtime whenVMI’s number one seed Jason Cox scored on a reversalwith 2 seconds left. Everett rebounded in the consolationsemifinal when he pinned Davidson’s Jayson Powers in 22seconds. Everett placed third with a 6-2 decision overAppalachian’s Josh Carroll in the consolation final.

In the heavyweight division junior Billy Linane received abye in the first round with his No. 1 seeding. In thesemifinals, Linane pinned fourth seeded John Kimble fromUNC-Greensboro, at 3:55. Linane faced off against No. 3seeded David Hazell from Appalachian State. Neitherwrestler managed a point in the first period, and the juniorfrom Kissimee, FL started the second in the top position.Hazell scored the first point on his escape 15 seconds intothe second period. Major General John SouthyGrinalds, United States MarineCorps (Retired), was namedeighteenth President of TheCitadel on his 59th birthday,January 5, 1997.General Grinalds was graduated

with honors from the UnitedStates Military Academy in 1959,earning a B.S. degree. He

continued his education at Brasenose College, OxfordUniversity as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor’s andmaster’s degrees in geography and, once again,graduating with honors. General Grinalds served as aWhite House Fellow in 1971 and completed his MBAat Harvard Business School with distinction in 1974.

General Grinalds has served abroad in theMediterranean region, the Panama Canal Zone,Japan, Belgium, and for two tours of duty in Vietnam.During one of those tours, he was awarded a SilverStar for heroism in combat. From 1982 to 1985,General Grinalds served as special assistant to theSupreme Allied Commander, Europe, working indelicate negotiations between NATO and the Frenchmilitary. Because of his outstanding service there,French President François Mtterand inducted him intothe Legion d’Honneur, a rare honor for an Americancolonel.

In 1986, General Grinalds received the rank ofbrigadier general before beginning an assignmentserving the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Hewas later promoted to major general and, in 1989,became the commanding general of the Marine CorpsRecruit Depot in San Diego, California, a position heheld until his retirement in 1991.

General Grinalds then became the seventhheadmaster of one of the South’s most prestigiousboys’ preparatory schools, Woodberry Forest Schoolin Virginia, where he served until coming to TheCitadel.

General Grinalds married Norwood Dennis, hischildhood sweetheart from Macon, GA, in 1962.They have four children.

General Grinalds is a member of the RotaryClub of Charleston, the Senior Board of Directors ofthe Brasenose College Charitable Foundation, atrustee of Porter-Gaud School, and a member of theExecutive Board of the Coastal Carolina Council, BoyScouts of America.

General Grinalds also has membership in theOfficers’ Christian Fellowship, the White House FellowsAssociation, the Association of American RhodesScholars, and the Sons of the American Revolution.He is a former trustee of Hampden-Sydney Collegeand the Madeira School and has served as a memberof the Virginia and South Carolina state selectioncommittees for the Rhodes Scholarship Trust.

At a school where leadership is taughtand duty is part of the curriculum, TheCitadel has the right person to lead itsDepartment of Athletics in LesRobinson. A virtual Who’s Who in in-tercollegiate athletics and one of theregion’s most sought-after speakers,Robinson begins his fifth year as theBulldogs’ Director of Athletics.Possessing more than four decades

of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who alsoserved as athletics director and basketball coach at North Caro-lina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athleticsdirector in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basket-ball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous sea-sons as an assistant coach.

In his first four years leading The Citadel’s athleticsprogram, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have al-ready benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.

During the past four years, the school witnessed theopening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Sta-dium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’sathletics.

The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hostedthe Southern Conference cross-country championships, thefirst two rounds of the women’s basketball championships,the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the base-ball tournament.

A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served fiveyears as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell andGeorge Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’shead basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively.Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985.

Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson becamethe head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where hecoached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their wintotal (7-14-20-27) each year.

The West Virginia native remains the only coach inSouthern Conference men’s basketball history to earn leaguecoach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranksfifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins.

Robinson is in his fourth year serving on the presti-gious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of theNCAA’s most influential committees. The Committee is re-sponsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Divi-sion I men’s basketball championships.

Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in edu-cation and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added amaster’s degree in education and guidance from Western Caro-lina in 1969.

Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon ofSt. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a homeon Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have fourchildren and seven grandchildren.

Originally constructed in 1939 and renovated in1989, McAlister Field House serves as the home of TheCitadel’s volleyball, basketball and wrestling programs.

The facility, which also houses the athleticdepartment’s administrative offices along with lockerrooms for the basketball and baseball teams, has aseating capacity of 6,000.

When built in 1939, the facility was referred toas “The Citadel Armory,” and seated 4,500 forbasketball games.

In 2001, The Citadel annexed a women’s facilityonto McAlister Field House. The women’s wing is hometo offices and locker rooms for the women’s volleyballand soccer teams.

Top to bottom, McAlister Field House is one ofthe top wrestling, basketball and volleyball arenas in theregion for both participants and fans. Even though6,000 fans can pack into McAlister Field House for abasketball game, no fan is further than 24 rows awayfrom the court. In addition, consession stands and restroom facilities are located on both the first andsecond floors.

With the seats pulled back, there are three full-size basketball and volleyball courts for practice.During inclement weather, The Citadel’s baseball, football, tennis and track teams use the facility.

The Citadel has hosted three 6,000-fan “sellout” crowds in basketball since the building’s renovation in1989, including games with Duke (1989), South Carolina (1997) and College of Charleston (1999).

In January of 1998 and 2002, The Citadel and McAlister Field House hosted the annual All-AcademyWrestling Championships.

McAlister Field House served as the host arena of the 2002 and 2003 Southern Conference Women’sBasketball Championships and is scheduled for the 2004 tournament.

McAlister Field House has also hosted such entertainment acts as Dave Matthews, Widespread Panic,Bob Hope, Kenny Rogers and Patti LaBelle. Events that have utilized the multi-purpose building include WCWWrestling, Charleston Cup Gymnastics Championships, Special Olympics, Moja Arts Festival Activities, Rotary/Red Cross Roundball High School Basketball Classic and assorted high school and college graduationceremonies.

A brand new floor was put in during the spring of 2001 and exhibits the new southern ConferenceLogo and “Spike,” the logo of Citadel athletics.

McAlister Field House

Vandiver HallCoaches’ offices, lockerrooms and the Bulldog wrestling room are all located in Vandiver Hall. Vandiver Hallwas built in 1991 and is a multipurpose athletic complex.
