The Long Island Championship ClassA Football Game played at Stony BrookUniversity on Saturday night was billedas the premier showdown between whatmany felt were the best two teams on theIsland. Both entered the championshipgame with a perfect record and both haddominated in their respective counties.

Twenty seconds into the game WilliamFloyd saw firsthand what Freeport coulddo. On the first play of the game, Jet Batereturned the kick-off to the 7-yard line. Then quarterback Randy Mills faked ahand-off to Leslie Jackman and as thedefense collapsed on Jackman, Mills ranthe ball in himself for a 57-yard touch-down. The Red Devils put the Colonialson notice that they were a club on a mis-sion. This early touchdown built the RedDevils' confidence and deflated theColonials' confidence just as fast."Freeport's ultimate goal all season was tobring home the Long IslandChampionship trophy: the team was onits way.

Forty-seven playing minutes later, theRed Devils gleefully hoisted the victor'scup and plaque in the air. "You deserveit," commented Coach Russ Cellan as 'hetalked to his team by the goal posts at thesouth end of the field. "You have workedhard and your drive to win has paid off.

I'm so proud of youguys. You are the best!"

Wind was definitely afactor. As the color guardcame across the field theJunior ROTC cadets hada difficult time holdingthe flags during the play-ing of the nationalanthem. Both teams keptthe ball low for the firstkick-offs but then thewind subsided a little andthe ball went airborne onboth passes and kicks.

Randy Mills was ableto complete five of ninepasses for 111 yards andtwo touchdowns. He alsoran for another 63 yardson eight carries. Millswas able to see the wholefield clearly and was able

to _keep William Floyd's COACH CELLAN gives last minute instructions before the victorious game.defense confused. Hishand-off fakes toJackman, Lennox Norville or TravisJones proved deadly for Floyd.

Later in the first quarter, Freeport'sdefense forced a punt and Mills took overon the 29-yard line. He threw a 35-yardpass to Erik Reitmayr for a TD. Reitmayrcaught two touchdown passes and madesix huge tackles. Reitmayr has truly been

the heart and soul of the team all season. He finished the game with three recep-tions for 81 yards and tied the Nassaurecord for touchdown receptions in a sea-son.

Freeport's defense has been so strongand efficient all season. Mike McQueen,Bemi Otulaja, Kyle Greenwood, and

Adam Woodmansee have anchored theline all season with their strength aridspeed. They totally shut down Floyd'soffense just like they had shut downHempstead, Baldwin, Hicksville,Syosset, Massapequa, etc. This wasn'tsupposed to happen, however, in thechampionship game, but happen it did.

Power plant to close on January 31by Laura Schofer

Erin M. Crotty, Commissioner for theNew York State Department ofEnvironmental Conservation, has direct-ed the Village of Freeport to shut downthe diesel generators at Power Plant 2 byJanuary 31, 2004. Although

Administrative Law Judge MollyMcBride recommended that the plantshut down its diesel engines byNovember 30, Commissioner Crottyextended the deadline by two months.

Commissioner Crotty's decision putaside the arguments presented by the vil-lage. The village hoped to keep the

diesels operable, in case of emergencysituations, until its new power plant is upand running. .The village is building astate of the art gas turbine engine, the GELM6000, which can generate about 48megawatts of electricity.

The village believes the shutdown datefails to take into account the variousdelays encountered during constructionof its facility and has stated that the vil-lage could endure economic hardship ifthe diesels are not available for genera-tion.

But Ms. Crotty says in herdecision that she has takenthese considerations intoaccount and believes that "inlight of the inability of PowerPlant to comply with applicableemission standards and theenvironmental impacts associ-ated with even its limited oper-ation, an early shutdown date isjustified."

The village says the decisionwill leave a capacity gap for theperiod between January 31 and

the anticipated start of the new combus-tion turbines no later than April 1, 2004.

"Permanent closure of the dieselsbefore replacement capacity of the newturbine generator is completed and incommercial operation, however, willresult in significant financial risks andpenalties to the village ratepayers, even ifthe diesels are not actually operated,"said Hubert Bianco, Superintendent ofFreeport Electric, in a press release.

Village board addresses small agendaby Doug Finlay

The Freeport Board of TrusteesMeeting on Monday evening, November24, was a scarce affair, as members

wrapped up lingering business in antici-pation of the four-day Thanksgiving hol-iday.

Business, though, did include request-ing authorization of no fewer than 22

The Freeport School District's improvedassessment performance in grades 4 and 8for English and Math was the focus ofSuperintendent Dr. Eric Eversley's presen-tation at the November 25 board meetingat New Visions School.

Dr. Eversley discussed the report he pre-pared for state Department of Educationofficials after they expressed interest in thedistrict's dramatic improvement in theNew York State Assessment Exams overthe past year.

His list of 31 factors and strategies thatcontributed to the improved results fellinto four general categories: focusing oninstruction and student performance, defining administrators' roles and respon-sibilities; aligning individual schools withstate and local standards; and providingsupport to students through one-on-onetutoring and small-group instruction.

In regular business, trustees approvedsalary increases of 2.95 percent for thefollowing Central Office administrators:Transportation Supervisor SophieCodispodo; Director of Buildings andGrounds Spiro Colaitis; School LunchDirector Jeannie Romeo, ComputerOperations Manager Carol Peters andAssistant Manager of InformationTechnology Carl Barkley.

The increases are for a one-year peri-od, July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2004.

Trustees heard from audience members

including Dr. Al Renken, who asked if theboard had established a timetable for the2004-05 budget process, and from AlanJay, who discussed the need for auditingthe teachers union finances and expressedconcern for the rising taxes in the district.

"The taxpayer indirectly pays theunion dues," he said.

Trustee Ron Ellerbe, who at theboard's November 11 meeting recom-mended tabling action on a resolution toapprove the district audit report, basedon Mr. Jay's concerns, announced thattrustees approved the resolution aftertheir executive session on that date.

Michael Raab, who chaired the meet-ing in the absence of Dr. Joseph Cattano, board president, noted the audit was "oneof the cleanest audit reports in years.

He also said the superintendent andother administrators have been "work-ing on the budget for quite some time.

"We are well aware of the financial situ-ation facing the school district," he added.

The budget will be. discussed at theboard's next regular meeting, December 3.

In other comments, Dr. Eversleypraised the varsity football team on theconclusion of its successful, undefeatedseason and for capturing the NassauCounty championship.

Prior to the start of the formal meet-ing, trustees and audience membersheard a multi-media presentation by stu-dents of the New Visions fourth grade.

Red Devils victoriousfrom page 1

They limited Floyd to 262 yards whileaccumulating 484 yards. This set a newLong Island Championship totalyardage record- but coach Ccllan wasmore concerned with Floyd's offensewhen the score was 27-6 He told thedefense, "They're oh the ropes. You'vegot to knock them out. Let's go."

Stanley Guitterez was a key defensiveplayer on Saturday. Nine tackles wouldhave been impressive enough, however, the deflection of three Floyd passestotally altered the Colonial's offensiveefforts. Guitterez is one of Freeport'sunsung heroes. Defensive players rarelyget the ink that the offensive playersreceive. Guitterez is definitely a keeper.

Kicker Adrian Palazzo worked extrahard to tie a Long Island Championshiprecord when he went 4-for-5 in the extrapoint category. Kicking with windsgusting to 40 MPH at times was tiringbut Palazzo always gave the Red Devilsgood field position. Most of the kickoffswere brought out to the 20-yard line ashe kicked them into the end zone.

Leslie Jackman truly put on a champi-onship performance. Jackman carriedthe ball 22 times for 234 yards andscored three touchdowns. His runs wereexciting and dramatic as he zigged andzagged around the defenders. He justpicked the Colonials' defense apart andhe became such'a threat that they wereforced to double team him, thus leavinganother Red Devil open. Jackman .isonly a junior and will return next yearfor another exciting year of football atFHS.

The underclassmen were at midfieldduring the interviews following thegame projecting on what they would donext year. The bar has been s"et high, butthe inspiration is there and they under-stand the importance of a strong workethic.

Freeport celebrated all the way home!It was a great bus fide for the Devils andthe celebrations will continue at schoolon Monday. The Annual GridironDinner at Crest Hollow is Tuesdaynight and perhaps there will be morefootball news next w.eek.

Take time to enjoy your holiday season!

Judge Sandra Feuerstein:role model

In a courtroom in Brooklyn often filled with immigrantsbeing sworn as new U.S. citizens, family and friends ofMerrick's Judge Sandra Feuerstein gathered in great numbersMonday to cheer as she received what must be the world'slargest gavel and became the junior member of the UnitedStates District Court, Eastern District of New York.

Following in the footsteps of her mother, Annette Elstein, also a federal judge, Judge Feuerstein was one of only twowomen judges when she first joined Nassau County DistrictCourt 15 years ago. She was the first woman from NassauCounty to join the Appellate Division of the New York StateSupreme Court. With two other women judges expected to benominated soon, there will then be a female majority in thefederal district court in Islip, according to District CourtJudge Joanna Seybert in her welcoming speech.

Judge Feuerstein has been a pioneer on the edge of a wavethat follows with many law schools having a majority offemale students. And her history of involvement in a broadspectrum of women's organizations, networking to help givea hand up to future generations, brought an audience of somany well-wishers on the occasion of her latest accomplish-ment that the huge room was filled. For them, as for GailPrudenti, Presiding Justice, Appellate Division, SecondDepartment of the New York Supreme Court, it was "a proudmoment." She noted Judge Feuerstein's "legal abilities, peo-ple skills, style and grace" that would be missed.

Judge Feuerstein in turn praised Governor George Patakifor moving to appoint so many qualified women to thebench. She thanked former U.S. Senator Al D'Amato, forwhom the courthouse in which she will serve is named, forhis role in obtaining the funds for its creation. And she didnot forget to honor the memory of State Senator NormanLevy, who represented this area and was an early supporterof her career. He "taught that public service is a privilege,"she recalled.

Years from now, when law students peruse the insightfultexts authored by Judge Feuerstein they will find them ashelpful as her colleagues have found her ability to "tear intothe most complex issues and arrive at a common sense solu-tion based on legal precedent," as Judge Seybert put it.

But they will have only a clue of the warmth and caringthat her husband, mother and sister, sons, grandchildren andfriends have known.

It is that human side that makes a great and fair judge, treating rich and poor alike, and that came across when thisarea's greatest judges gathered to welcome another to theirmidst.

Save the Bay Colony

To The Leader:1 have been a resident of Baldwin

Harbor, specifically Bay Colony, for 11years. My home is on the water and boat-ing is a large part of my family'slifestyle. I know that CouncilmanSantino has been supportive of thedredging project that has seemingly beenunderway for many years. I thank himfor this support and very anxiously awaita decision and ultimately the start of thismajor "facelift" for Bay Colony. Myboating is relentlessly limited due to thelow tides and poor canal conditions. Myfamily and I love Bay Colony. We havegood neighbors, lots of children andpride in the community. Unfortunately, the condition of the Grand Canal has hada detrimental effect on the morale, finan-

cial status and lifestyle of all residents ofBay Colony.

Recently, I received my Tax ImpactDisclosure Notice. The assessed value ofmy house has gone up significantly.Unfortunately, the value assessed by thecounty is not at all reflective of an actualresale value. Who would buy property onsuch a poorly maintained canal? I think itis irresponsible of the county to conducta blanket assessment without taking intoconsideration very specific communityneeds. 1 often hear that Bay Colony is thepride of Baldwin. I would very much liketo see that vision come to fruition.Without the support of the county, com-munities such as Bay Colony do notstand a chance of survival. We needhelp! Our taxes should be reflective ofthe homes and lifestyles in which welive. The county is pushing people out.

Just do the right thing! To The Leader:

Sal Lauri, my neighbor, started tobuild a deck in front of his house.Neglecting to get a permit, an oversight,he was stopped on the second day byCode Enforcement and was told to

remove it and file for a permit.(Complete bars were built and in fulloperation with no permits for two yearsbefore they were finally court-ordered tohave them removed). Sal did so and paidhis fee, which to his surprise was$340.00 for an 8' x 13' deck! It was dou-ble the normal fee because he started tobuild. This was an outrage. Sal foughtthis decision and won. Needless to sayhalf of the fee to be returned took twomonths and - many phone calls.

Shawn, a young homeowner bought ahouse next to an open lot. The lot is goingto have a new house built. He had concernsat the Site Plan Review meeting about neg-lected bulkheading and how close the newhouse was going to be built to his propertyline. I told him he should speak now

Group, one of the parties who argued forthe closure of Power Plant 2, said "Weare very happy with the decision. Wehope that the DEC will follow-up ontheir decision and make sure this is atrue shut-down. We want to see thediesels dismantled or rendered inopera-ble by filling with cement," she said.

"The DEC has been more than fair tothe Village of Freeport; it's time to befair to the people of Freeport," said Ms.Peel.

Vincent Greco, a longtime critic ofPower Plant 2 told The Leader that "Isupport the DEC's decision. They'relooking out for our safety. They made anenvironmental decision instead of aneconomic decision."

Freeport completes removalof contaminated soils.

Progress on the turbinegenerator project continues.

Freeport Electric announced that thelast load of contaminated soils under the

Power Plant 2 PGB remediation planwas removed Friday, November 21. Allregulated PCB contaminated soils wereremoved from the area involved in theconstruction of the new Power Plant 2(PP2) Electric Generation Project."Endpoint" sampling confirmed that theremediation effort met state Departmentof Environmental Conservation (DEC)objectives. These endpoint samplingresults will be compiled into a ClosureReport for DEC review.

P.W. Grosser Consulting Engineersand Hydrogeologists, P.C. were hired byFreeport Electric to coordinate with theDEC in developing a voluntary remedi-ation plan this past July.

According to a press release issued bythe Village, P.W. Grosser professionalssupervised all remediation activities onsite, including air monitoring, during allsoils excavation. Their data confirmed.that there were no PCB concentrationsin the air 'during the remediation project.

"With completion of the soils removalin the under construction for the new

electric turbine facilities, we will contin-ue to keep P.W. Grosser and NYSDECinvolved in onsite activities," said Mr.Bianco.

"There is the possibility that specificconstruction activities may need to dis-turb soils below the grade of the remedi-ation project, such as installation offootings, or installation of ductwork orpiping," Mr. Bianco explained.

Mr. Bianco added that "an area in thenortheast portion of the site is beingused for staging major equipment andmaterials. None of the soils will be dis-turbed during the construction project,"he continued. "Once the equipment andmaterials are removed from that stagingarea, P.W. Grosser will confirm whetheradditional site remediation is required inthat area.

"We are pleased that the remediationproject proceeded smoothly and expedi-tiously," said Mr. Bianco. "It was para-mount to the village and FreeportElectric to protect the safety and welfareof the community."

because this was the time.\Nautical Mile is a ghost town now. As

long as booze is not being sold outsidewith loud rock and roll music, blaring, the interest of business owners is to shutdown and get part-time jobs. Permits arebeing issued for new outside bars andnew restaurants with no parking toaccommodate all the rowdies from all ofNassau County. No other town, or vil-lage allows outdoor music, period.

State pension funds are on the rise inthe millions to small villages like ours,so expect another village tax increase in2004. No, I'm not kidding.

The Freeport Power Plant that is beingbuilt on the Freeport Dump loaded withPCBs that is costing us millions of dol-lars to remove is a mystery of tremen-dous magnitude. Will it be completed

and operating within budget, $73 million(no, I'm not kidding) and will the electricrate increase of 25% to us all, beapproved and in our bills shortly? Iwould say that's a safe bet.

More trees are being planted; at leastI'm breathing healthier.

Do you remember in March of thisyear around election time when theFreeport Hospital was being demolishedfor senior housing?Hias anyone seen anyaction there lately?

Again, I urge you to come to VillageBoard meetings, Zoning BoardMeetings, Site Plan Review meetingsbecause this is our home and we need tobe informed as to what is going on aridvoice your opinion. Join your civic andreligious organizations. It is importantfor the future of our village.
