2003 SAMFORD FOOTBALL SIGNEES

2003 SAMFORD FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

Samford last competed for aconference championship infootball in the 1930s when the

Dixie Conference was home to thenHoward College. Seven decadeslater, Samford embarks on a new erawhen it begins play in the OhioValley Conrference in 2003. For thelast 12 seasons, the Bulldogs com-peted as a NCAA Division I-AAIndependent. On the brink of enter-ing the OVC, the Bulldogs playedfive Ohio Valley teams in 2002 giv-ing second-year head coach BillGray and his squad a taste of thefuture. The Bulldogs finished 4-7last season.

"We know we have to get big-ger and stronger in order to competein this league, but one of the thingsthat really pleased me about ourguys is that they never quit. Ourgoal is to play 60 minutes every game. If we do that, it gives us a goodchance of winning," Gray said.

Samford brings that no-quit attitude into the OVC in 2003. TheBulldogs will have to replace an All-Ameican wide receiver in AryviaHolmes, who broke school records every time he touched the ball. TheBulldogs also lost their leading tackler on defense in Robert Evans aswell as its placekicker Chip Walters.

Samford's spread offense will now center around junior receiverEfrem Hill and junior quarterback Ray Nelson, who spent most of lastseason battling Josh Kellett for the starting spot. With Kellett gone,Nelson is the sole signal caller. The Bulldogs found most of their suc-cess through the air passing for 2,439 yards and 16 touchdowns.Samford's ground game only managed 1,205 yards in 11 games, but theBulldogs ran in 16 touchdowns. Seniors Fred Gilliam and D.J. Stancilanchor the rushing attack in 2003. Samford returns seven starters on

offense, four players on the lineand three players at the skilledpositions.

On defense, fivesenior starters return to provideexperience for a defense, whichspent last season growing up.The Bulldogs yielded 420 yardsof offense per game to opposingopponents and 38 points pergame in 2002. The experienceon the field this season shouldhelp Samford's multiple defensethrive.

The Bulldogs willplay the majority of time withfive defensive backs. Seniordefensive end Darold Williamsreturns at 100 percent. Williamsled the team with six sacks inonly seven appearances. Seniornose tackle Ross Newtonhelped control the middle of theline. But Samford's defense willbe anchored by senior defensiveback Derrick Wheeler, who fin-

ished second on the team in tack-les with 98 including 10 for loss.

However, Samford's biggeststrength in 2003 should be itsreturn game on special teams. The Bulldogs finished in the topfive in the nation in kickoffreturn. Sophomore All-Americanreturn specialist CortlandFinnegan finished second in thenation in kickoff return averaging32.2 yards per return with twotouchdowns. Senior defensiveback Leo Randall complementedFinnegan on punt returns.Randall ranked in the top 15 inthe nation and averaged 12 yardsper return with one touchdown.

PLAYERS TO WATCHDerrick Wheeler, LB, 6-0, 200, Sr.The only junior to serve as a team captain in 2002. Wheeler finishedsecond on the team in tackles with 98 and second on the team in tacklesfor loss with 10 last season. He also had three sacks. Wheeler earned I-AA All-Independent First Team defensive honors in 2001 and 2002.
