HNatural resources form the basis of our ex-
istence on this planet. The objectives ofour policy are for these resources to beused sparingly and in a manner whichtakes the requirements of both nature andhumanity into account.
Our declared policy is integrated environ-mental protection. This policy starts at theroot causes and encompasses in its man-
agement decisions all the consequencesfor the environment which could arise fromproduction processes or the productsthemselves.
You too can help to protect the environ-ment by operating your Mercedes-Benz inan environmentally responsible manner.
Operating conditions and your individualdriving style to a large extent influence fuelconsumption and the rate of engine, brake, and tire wear. To reduce fuel consumptionand the rate of wear, please consider thefollowing:
Avoid short trips.
Make sure that the tire pressures are
always correct. Avoid frequent, sudden acceleration.
Do not carry any unnecessary weight.
Remove ski holders and roof racks
once you no longer need them.
Do not warm up the engine with the car
stationary.
Shift gears such that each gear is used
only up to 2/ 3 of its maximum engine
speed.
Keep an eye on the vehicle's fuel con-
sumption.
A regularly serviced vehicle will also helpprotect the environment. You should ad-here to the service intervals that the Flexi-ble Service System (FSS) displays in the
instrument cluster, along with other main-tenance work described in this book.
Always have services performed by anauthorized Mercedes-Benz Light TruckCenter.

We want you to enjoy your Mercedes-Benzautomobile. Vehicle safety and operationalreliability are two very important factorsand to maintain them, a certain amount of
service and maintenance is necessary.
We continuously strive to improve ourproduct, and ask for your understandingthat we reserve the right to make changesin the required periodic maintenance workwhich is required for our vehicles.
Your Mercedes-Benz comes equipped with
theFlexible Service System (FSS), whichevaluates engine temperature, oil level, ve-hicle speed, engine speed, distance drivenand the time elapsed since your last serv-ice. It determines when your vehicle needsbasic engine maintenance and alerts youwell in advance. Other maintenance workis also required when engine maintenance
is indicated. The next necessary FSS serv-ice is indicated in the instrument cluster.
There are two types of maintenance servic-es for your vehicle, a (minor) A-service,and a (major) B-service. Additional workthat is not calculated by the FSS system is
required at both A- and B-service intervals. Please refer to Additional Work to be Per-formed on page 20 for more details.
Under normal circumstances the drivendistance between services is an average ofapproximately 12 000 miles. Under mostcircumstances, A- and B-services will becalled for by FSS alternatively, i.e. an A-
service will be followed by a B-servicewhich will be followed again by an A-serv-ice.
Exception: A B-service will be followed byanother B-service if the FSS calculates anoil change interval of 14 000 miles ormore.
Following each A- or B-service, your Mer-cedes-Benz Light Truck Center will resetthe FSS counter. The next service is indi-cated in the instrument cluster (see chap-
ter Flexible Service System in yourOperators Manual).
Tire rotations should be performed in accord-
ance with the tire manufacturers recommen-dations. Please refer to the tire pamphletincluded in your vehicle literature portfolio.
Wear items such as, but not limited to, en-gine belts, tire wear and rotation, wiperblades, wiper rubber inserts, brake discs, brake pads, brake pad wear sensors, clutch discs and clutch pressure plates are
not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Mainte-nance Commitment.
A detailed listing of service proceduresperformed are contained in this booklet, starting on page 13.

Additional work
Additional workmeans any work that is notcalculated by the Flexible Service System
computer. This work is listed in the sectionAdditional Work to be Performed (seepage 20). This type of work has to be car-ried out according to the individual vehicletype, due to the specific technical parame-ters, wear processes or special equipmenton each different vehicle.
Special service requirements
Brake fluidshould be replaced every twoyears, preferably in the spring, see page
21. We recommend that you only usebrake fluid approved by Mercedes-Benz. Areminder for the next scheduled brake flu-id replacement is affixed in the enginecompartment.
Coolant should be checked for the properconcentration before the start of the win-ter season (or once a year in hot regions).
Have the coolant (water/ anticorro-sion/ antifreeze mixture) replaced everythree years, see page 21.
Interior filters (e.g. dust filter, recirculat-ing air filter, activated charcoal filter orcombination filter) are replaced as part ofthe B-service. Under severe dust condi-
tions, or with the Automatic Climate Con-trol frequently operating in the airrecirculation mode, the dust filter shouldbe replaced correspondingly sooner and
changed more frequently than as called forby the FSS. Such additional service is not
covered by the Mercedes-Benz MaintenanceCommitment.
Tire rotations should be performed in ac-cordance with the tire manufacturers rec-ommendations. Please note that the usefullife of tires will also vary depending on tiretype, speed rating, road surfaces, and indi-vidual driving style. Tire rotations are not cov-
ered by the Mercedes-Benz MaintenanceCommitment.
Spark Plugs should be replaced accordingto schedule on page 23. Severe operatingconditions (frequent starting and stopping, excessive idling, sustained fast highway driv-ing) may call for spark plugs to be replaced
correspondingly sooner. Such additionalservice is not covered by the Mercedes-BenzMaintenance Commitment.

Service Booklet
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencyand, in California, the Air Resources Boardhave certified that the emission controlsystems of your vehicle comply with the
applicable exhaust emission standards forMY 2003 vehicles. This vehicle also com-plies with the applicable Canadian MotorVehicle Emission Standards.
To be certain that the emission control sys-tems function as designed, regular mainte-nance is necessary for components of thevehicle which affect exhaust and evapora-
tion emissions composition.
The vehicle owner is responsible for theregular maintenance of the emission con-trol system, as well as the use of premiumunleaded gasoline with an anti-knock in-dex of at least 91 (displayed on the pump)in all models.
Failure to properly maintain the emissionsystem may result in repairs not being cov-ered by the emission system warranties.
Explanations of each maintenance job aregiven in numerical order on page 24.

Emission Control System Caution
Your Mercedes-Benz vehicle is equippedwith both a three-way catalyst and a closed
loop oxygen sensor system to comply withcurrent exhaust emission regulations.Keep your vehicle in proper operating con-dition by following our recommendedmaintenance instructions as outlined.
The following has to be adhered to:
a) In all models, use only premium un-
leaded gasoline with an anti-knockindex of at least 91 (as displayed on
the pump).Damage to the enginecould occur if premium unleaded fuel isnot used. Refer to the Operators Manu-al for special precautions.
b) Leaded gasoline should not be used
under any circumstances.Damage tothe emission control components willresult.
c) The specified engine maintenance
jobs have to be performed complete-
ly and at the required intervals. Cor-rect ignition timing and properlyfunctioning spark plugs for instance areimportant for the service life of the cat-alysts. Failure to properly perform thespecified maintenance jobs may ad-versely affect the emission control sys-tem on the vehicle and reduce itsservice life.
d) The operation of the emission con-
trol system must not be altered in
any way. Alterations are not permissi-ble by law. In addition, alterations mayresult in damage to the catalysts, in-creased fuel consumption, and im-paired engine running conditions.
e) Irregular engine running conditions
should be corrected immediately by
an authorized Mercedes-Benz LightTruck Center.Such irregular runningconditions can influence the properfunction of the emission control system.
If the CHECK ENGINE indicator lamp inthe instrument cluster illuminates whenthe engine is running, it indicates a possi-ble malfunction of the engine management
system or emission control system.
We recommend that you have the malfunc-tion checked as soon as possible.

The composition of exhaust emissions isinfluenced not only by the special emissioncontrol equipment, but also by various en-gine components and their adjustments.
Therefore, emission system maintenancemust include these engine components. Some maintenance jobs are actually onlytests. They are important however, be-cause they allow early detection of dis-crepancies which can later lead toincreased exhaust emissions. It is general-ly less expensive to have such items ad-
justed immediately rather than allowingthem to contribute to costly repairs. Themaintenance intervals have been deter-mined so that the vehicle, under normalconditions, should operate properly be-tween services.
0101 Engine oil and filter change
Change the engine oil and oil filter as indi-cated by the FSS service indicator in the in-strument cluster. If oil consumption should
increase, determine the cause and takenecessary corrective steps. Reset FSScounter.
0980 Replace air filter element
Under normal dust conditions, replace airfilter element approximately every 60,000miles or 4 years. Clean air filter cover andhousing prior to removal of air filter ele-
ment.
0780 Replace fuel filter
Replace the fuel filter approximately every60,000 miles or 5 years.
1351 Check engine poly-V-belt condi-tion
The poly-V-belt is subject to wear and ag-ing. It must be checked for cracks andwear at every B-service. Replace poly-V-belt if necessary.
1580 Replace spark plugs
Spark plugs are subject to electrode ero-
sion and must be replaced according toschedule on page 23, or more frequentlyas may be required when subject to severeoperating conditions.
