Mitchell engineered the game-winning 72-yard drive that began with 1:56 remaining to play and with only one timeout.

• After losing 13 straight games to open the 2001 season, the Lions rallied against the Vikings and won their first game of the season at the Silverdome vs. the Vikings on December 16, 2001.

2003 DETROIT LIONS PRESS RELEASE

LAST GAME MINNESOTA 23, DETROIT 13; SEPTEMBER 21, 2003 FORD FIELD The Detroit Lions (1-2) dropped their second straight game at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings (3-0), 23-13, in front of 60,865 at Ford Field. Detroit came out firing and jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. After KR Eddie Drummond gave the Lions good field position with a long return on the opening kickoff, Detroit moved 59 yards in seven plays to get on the board first. RB Shawn Bryson capped off the drive when he got into the end zone with 11:00 remaining in the first quarter on a five-yard run, the Lions first rushing touchdown of the season. Later in the quarter, a 27-yard field goal by K Jason Hanson gave Detroit a 10-0 lead, but Minnesota would come back and control the second quarter. A pair of rushing touchdowns by Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper put Minnesota up 13-10 and then a 21-yard field goal by K Aaron Elling with five seconds remaining in the first half made it 16-10 Vikings going into the locker room. Detroit would cut the lead to 16-13 on its first possession of the second half on a 37-yard Hanson field goal, but a 72-yard touchdown play from QB Gus Frerotte to WR Kelly Campbell on the Vikings next drive put Minnesota up 23-13 and turned out to be too much for the Lions to overcome. Transactions Since Breaking Training Camp Injuries have forced the Lions to make several transactions this season since the team broke training camp on August 15. The Lions have acquired nine players (17.0 percent of the active roster) currently on the team’s active roster since that point due mostly to injury.

Through 11 weeks of the NFL season, the Lions are tied for the most players placed on the Reserve/Injured list in the league with nine. That number could move to 10 as WR Scott Anderson is likely to be placed on the IR list due to a high ankle sprained suffered at Seattle (11/16).

Of the nine Lions’ players placed on the reserve/injured list, six (CB Chris Cash, CB André Goodman, WR Shawn Jefferson, P John Jett, RB James Stewart and LB Brian Williams) were projected to start or starting at their respective positions when suffering their season-ending injuries.

One position that has undergone a significant amount of change is the cornerback position. Heading into the training camp, Dré Bly, Chris Cash, André Goodman and Chris Watson were slated as the team’s top four corners. Just three games into the regular season, the Lions had lost the services of Cash, Goodman and Watson due to injury. To fill the need at the cornerback spot, the Lions have signed four cornerbacks (Roderick Babers, Doug Evans, Jacoby Shepherd and Otis Smith) since September 2. Babers has since been placed in the Reserve/Injured list. Due to injuries, smith has moved into a starting role at cornerback and Doug Evans filled in as a starter vs. Oakland (11/20) and vs. Chicago (11/9) as Dré Bly was inactive due to a hamstring injury.

LAST WEEK SEATTLE 35, DETROIT 14; NOVEMBER 16, 2003 SEAHAWKS STADIUM The Detroit Lions (3-7) were unable to stretch their winning streak to three games as they fell to the Seattle Seahawks (7-3), 35-14, in their first ever trip to Seahawks Stadium. Things did not start well for the Lions as Seattle jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. On the Seahawks first possession, QB Matt Hasselbeck ran in from four yards out to give Seattle a 7-0 lead and then later in the quarter, RB Shaun Alexander went in from one yard to make it a two-touchdown advantage. The Lions would respond quickly, coming to life on their next play from scrimmage when QB Joey Harrington hit an open WR Scotty Anderson down the field for a 72-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7. The score was the Lions’ longest play from scrimmage this season and Harrington’s longest completion of his career. Seattle’s offense continued to play tough, and went up 21-7 when it caught a break after Hasselbeck fumbled on a run, but it was recovered in the end zone by WR Koren Robinson for a touchdown. Seattle increased its lead to 35-7 on a pair of big plays by WR Bobby Engram. Engram hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Hasselbeck and then returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown. The Lions would not go quietly as on their ensuing possesion, they drove 71 yards on nine plays, capped off by Harrington connecting with WR Az-Zahir Hakim in the corner of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown. The drive would be costly for the Lions, however, as Anderson was injured while blocking and did not return. The teams would go into the locker room with Detroit trailing 35-14. Neither team would score in the second half. The Lions defense held Seattle in check for the final 30 minutes, limiting Alexander to just 11 yards on seven carries.

MARIUCCI TURNOVER IMPACT Head Coach Steve Mariucci brings both a mentality and a proven record when it comes to preaching ball security. His “Four Points of Pressure” drills and speeches are important coaching techniques that have helped his teams accumulate one of the lowest turnover ratios among all NFL teams since the 1970 merger. (Following statistical information courtesy Elias Sports Bureau). • In 106 regular season games, Mariucci’s teams accumulated

the best turnover rate since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger with 1.46 giveaways (interceptions and fumbles) per game.

• The Lions did not allow a turnover in their regular season opening game against the Arizona Cardinals, at the Denver Broncos or in their home contest against the Chicago Bears.

• Detroit has only lost two fumbles in 2003, including a muffed punt, which is the fewest in the NFL.

HARRINGTON’S PROGRESSIONS Lions QB Joey Harrington will make his 23rd career start this weekend at Minnesota. Harrington had a strong outing in Seattle highlighted by two touchdown passes, one of which was a career-long 72-yard strike to WR Scotty Anderson. He finished with 285 passing yards and matched a career-high with 26 completions in 48 attempts. Harrington had an outstanding performance against the Cardinals (9/7), throwing a career high four-touchdown passes and was selected for NFC Offensive Player of the Week and NFL Fedex Express Player of the Week honors for games played on NFL Kickoff 2003 Weekend (September 4, 7-8).

QB Joey Harrington had his longest career completion and longest career touchdown completion when he connected with WR Scotty Anderson for 72 yards in the first quarter against the Seattle Seahawks (11/16). It was the Lions longest offensive play since 2001 when then Lions WR Johnny Morton had a 76-yard reception at Arizona (11/18)

Accuracy has been one of the points of emphasis this season in Harrington’s improvement, notably signified by his completion percentage. His numbers are progressing as he gains more experience in the West Coast offense. On the season, Harrington’s completion rate is 54.1 (192-of-355; an improvement over 50.1 by completing 215-0f-429 during his rookie year).

Harrington’s biggest improvement has come during his the last four games, as he has completed of tally of 58.5 percent of his passes (86-of-147). In each of those games, he has completed passes above his season average 54.1. (57.5, 23-of-40 at Chicago 10/26; 61.9, 13-of-21 vs. Oakland 11/2; 63.2, 24-of-38 vs. Chicago 11/9; 54.2, 26-of-48 at Seattle 11/16).

Known for his 10 fourth-quarter, come-from-behind heroics at the University of Oregon, Harrington added to his NFL total, engineering his third fourth quarter come-from-behind win of his career as he led the Lions to a 12-10 win over the Bears on Sunday. On the game-winning drive, Harrington was 5-of-6 on pass attempts, accounting for all 35 yards (seven plays) which led to a game-winning 48-yard field goal. As a rookie in 2002, Harrington directed an eight-play, 38-yard drive with under two minutes remaining to set up K Jason Hanson’s 43-yard game-winning field goal vs. Dallas (11/3/02). He helped set up a Hanson 24-yard field goal to push the game into overtime and an eventual Lions win, while trailing 17-20 with 2:21 remaining, as he completed five consecutive passes for 73 yards during the drive to put Detroit in position for the short field goal.

Harrington continues to show his ability to avoid the rush having only been sacked six times through the first 10 games of the 2003 season. With 14 sacks in 24 career games, he is currently the NFL’s all-time sacks-per-pass-attempt-percentage leader (14 sacks/784 att. for 1.79%) ahead of: Steve Walsh (40 sacks/1,317 att. for 3.04%), Dan Marino (270 sacks/8,358 att. for 3.23%), Doug Williams (84 sacks/2,507 att. for 3.35%) and Mark Rypien (97 sacks/2,613 att. for 3.71%).

After 10 games, Harrington leads the NFL with the lowest

sacks/pass play ratio with six sacks per 361 pass plays, including 355 attempts (1.66%). Among league passers in 2002, Harrington had the lowest sack per pass attempt percentage (eight sacks/429 attempts for 1.83%) in the NFL.

Against Arizona, Harrington tossed a career high four touchdown passes in the Lions 42-24 season-opening win at Ford Field. He was 17-of-30 (56.7%) for 195 yards with no interceptions and no sacks. His 116.0 QB rating was a single-game career high as well. Harrington became the first Lions’ QB to throw four TDs in a game since Scott Mitchell had four vs. Chicago 9/22/96.

Harrington’s six-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to TE Mikhael Ricks at Arizona (12/8/02) marked his 12th touchdown pass of the season, which is the most for a Lions’ rookie quarterback in franchise history. He also moved past former Lions’ rookie quarterback Jeff Komlo (2,238, 1979) to become the all-time passing-yards leader among Lions’ rookie quarterbacks with 152 yards passing at Arizona.

DEMOLITION MAN FB Cory Schlesinger, who is ranked second for Detroit and tied for second amongst NFL fullbacks with 27 receptions, has blossomed in the Lions’ West Coast offense and continues to prove that he is arguably one of the league’s best all-around fullbacks. On December 19th, 2002, Schlesinger was named an alternate to the 2003 Pro Bowl. His toughness was put on display during the middle of the 2002 season after he continued playing while he had several cracked vertebrae. He is a key component of the Lions' running game as a bruising blocking back and is an important part of the team’s passing attack. He was the 2002 Mike Utley Spirit Award winner.

Schlesinger led the team with four receptions for 53 yards in the Lions 23-13 win over the Raiders (11/2), one of which was a 33-yard touchdown and the second-longest reception of his career. He also helped the Lions ground game rush for over 100 yards for the second time this season.

Against the Cardinals, Schlesinger had three receptions for 30 yards, including a four-yard touchdown. He also pulled in a key 20-yard pass to put the Lions at the four-yard line to help setup a Lions touchdown and a 35-24 lead.

In 2002, Schlesinger was a major reason RB James Stewart and the Lions’ offensive unit grounded out 192 yards on 39 rushing attempts (4.9 avg.) vs. Chicago (10/20/02). His lead blocks, including several on Pro Bowler Brian Urlacher, allowed Stewart to churn out a career-high 172 yards rushing.

During the inaugural game at Ford Field vs. Green Bay (9/22/02), Schlesinger's one-yard touchdown run marked the fifth rushing touchdown of his career. It also marked the first rushing touchdown in Ford Field history

In 2001, Schlesinger was the Lions’ second-leading receiver with 60 receptions for 466 yards (both career highs) and ninth among all NFL running backs. He had the highest tally of any fullback in the NFC and was second only to Larry Centers for the most receptions by a fullback in the entire NFL.

PORCHER’S PRESSURES DE Robert Porcher is the Lions’ leader in career quarterback sacks with 91.5. He surpassed former Lions DE Al “Bubba” Baker’s previous record of 75.5 career QB takedowns in 2001. Porcher has been named to three of the last seven Pro Bowls (1998, 2000, 2002), and had a solid 2002 season, recording 51 tackles (33 solo), 5.5 sacks, four passes defensed, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles in 15 games played. In his 12th season with the Lions in 2003, his 182 games played rank fourth behind Dick LeBeau (185) in team history.

Lions’ rookie LB Boss Bailey is the younger brother of Washington Redskins three-time Pro Bowl CB Champ Bailey. Both starred at the University of Georgia.

The younger brother of Lions T Stockar McDougle will be suiting up for the Philadelphia Eagles this season. Jerome McDougle, a defensive end, was selected in the first round by Philadelphia. McDougle’s cousin, Tyrone Carter, is a safety for the New York Jets.

Lions rookie S Terrence Holt followed older brother Torry’s steps into the NFL. Torry Holt currently stars at wide receiver for the St. Louis Rams.

QB Ty Detmer isn’t the only quarterback in his family playing in the NFL. His brother, Koy Detmer, is entering his seventh season as a quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Lions CB Jacoby Shepherd is a cousin of Kansas City Chiefs WR and return specialist Dante Hall.

After sitting out against the Oakland Raiders (11/2), Porcher had

his best game of the season against the Chicago Bears (11/9). He finished with six solo tackles, including one for a loss and had a knockdown and two quarterback pressures.

Porcher has 22 career games notching more than one sack and his 640 career tackles are ranked eighth in Lions’ history.

Porcher scored his first career touchdown in the 2002 season finale vs. Minnesota (12/29) on a fumble recovery in the endzone.

Porcher recorded his 600th career tackle in 2002 vs. Chicago (10/20) finishing the game with three solo tackles.

One of his most dominating performances of 2002 came against Dallas (11/3) when he finished with two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery as well as six tackles (five solo).

Porcher also ranks eighth on the Lions’ career tackles list (since 1973) with 649 career stops. He is behind Jimmy Williams, who stands in seventh place with 653.

DR. DRÉ… AIN’T NUTHIN’ BUT AN “INT” THANG When the Lions acquired CB Dré Bly they were hoping for a big play corner and so far he has not disappointed. Bly comes to Detroit in the prime of his career after playing his first full season (16 games) as a starter for the St. Louis Rams in 2002. He played in two Super Bowls with St. Louis, helping the Rams win Super Bowl XXXIV as a rookie. Bly was selected by the Rams in the second round (41st overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft out of the University of North Carolina. He holds the ACC career record with 20 interceptions and as a freshman was the ACC rookie of the year, setting a conference record with 11 interceptions.

CB Dré Bly missed his second consecutive game due to injury against Chicago (11/9). Prior to missing his first game last week against Oakland (11/2), Bly had not missed a game during his five-year NFL career, playing in 71 consecutive games.

Bly recovered a fumble by Cowboys RB Troy Hambrick, who was stripped by S Corey Harris, and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown against Dallas (10/19) at Ford Field. It was the second time in his career he returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown. His first was last season, while with the Rams, against the San Francisco 49ers (12/30) which he returned 20 yards for a touchdown.

Against San Francisco (10/5), Bly intercepted his fourth pass of the season and is currently tied for the third most interceptions in the NFL. He also has seven pass defenses on the season.

Bly led the Detroit defense with 10 tackles (eight solo) against the Denver Broncos (9/28), his highest tackling output since joining the Lions.

Bly recorded interceptions in each of his first three games for the Lions, the first of which he returned 48 yards for a touchdown. His second interception came when he intercepted Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre to end a scoring threat with only 39 seconds left in the first half at Green Bay. Against the Vikings, he intercepted a pass early in the third quarter that led to a Lions’ field goal. Bly intercepted a pass in three consecutive games for the first time in his career.

Also against the Vikings, Bly recorded the third sack of his career and first in a Lions uniform.

Bly has 18 interceptions for 298 yards in his career. He has returned four of his 18 interceptions for touchdowns with all four returns coming from 48 yards or more (48, 53, 56, and 93).

One of Bly’s best games as a pro was on Monday Night Football game against the Lions in 2001. He had a career-high 11 tackles (seven solo) and returned an intercepted pass from Lions QB Ty Detmer 93 yards for a Rams touchdown (10/8/01).

PRIEFER’S PRIDE Since Coach Chuck Priefer arrived in Detroit to take over the Lions special teams in 1997, the Lions have ranked among the league’s best and the 2003 season has been no different.

Detroit’s punt return and punt coverage teams have been consistent

throughout the season. The Lions are the fifth-best punt coverage team in the league, allowing just 6.9 yards per return while averaging 10.7 yards on their own returns. The NFL average in punt returns is 9.6 yards.

The Lions are one of only three teams in the NFL (Kansas City and Chicago) to have both a kick return and punt return go for a touchdown this season.

The field goal rush team of the Lions has established itself as an elite this season as it ranks first in the NFL in field goal average allowed. Opponents have made just 11-of-17 (.647) field goal attempts this season.

Detroit has blocked two field goals and is one of only three teams in the league to have more than one block this season (Carolina-3; New England 2). DE Jared DeVries blocked the first field goal of his career in the Lions’ 12-10 win over Chicago (11/9) when he got a hand on Paul Edinger’s 48-yard attempt in the second quarter to keep the score tied at 3-3. In the Lions’ game at Chicago (10/26), DE James Hall blocked a 32-yard attempt by Edinger to keep Detroit within striking distance.

Through Week 10, Edinger had missed only three of 20 field goal tries, all of which came against the Lions.

In the first game of the year, KR/PR Eddie Drummond helped key the Lions victory over the Arizona Cardinals (9/7) after he took back a punt 57 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 21-21 and then forced a muffed punt on the Cardinals next return which set up the go-ahead score.

In just his second game for the Lions, KR/PR Reggie Swinton put the Lions on the board at Chicago (10/26) with a 96-yard kick return for a TD.

A 61-yard kick return by Swinton in the fourth quarter of the game against Oakland (11/2) was crucial as it put the Lions in prime field position to allow K Jason Hanson to ice the win with a field goal.

GETTING A KICK OUT OF HANSON In two-time Pro Bowler Jason Hanson, the Lions are blessed with one of the NFL's top all-around kickers. He is deadly accurate inside the 50-yard line and is among the league’s kickers who have not missed this season, hitting 13-of-13 overall and 3-of-3 from 50+ yards out. With two points, Hanson will become the 25th player in NFL history to score 1,200 career points. In 2002 vs. Minnesota (10/13), he became the Lions’ all-time franchise leader in field goals after nailing the 245th of his career, surpassing former Lions great Eddie Murray. In last season’s Thanksgiving Day match-up against New England (11/28), Hanson became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer after nailing four field goals.

K Jason Hanson’s four field goals (24, 25, 30 and 48) totaled all of the Lions’ points scored in the team’s come-from-behind 12-10 win over the Chicago Bears (11/9) at Ford Field. It was the 15th time in his career that he has made at least four field goals in a game. The Lions are 13-2 (.866) when he hits four-or-more field goals in a game and 27-9 (.750) when he kicks three-or-more field goals in a game.

Hanson’s 48-yard field goal with 39 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bears (11/9) marked the 13th game-winning (fourth-quarter or overtime) kick of his career. Among his 13 game-winning boots, eight have been 42 yards or longer.

Hanson’s 13 field goals are the most consecutive field goals he has made to begin a season in his career. He holds the Lions’ record for most consecutive field goals made during any stretch with 24 in 1997. Overall, Hanson has made 14 consecutive field goals, with his last miss coming at Atlanta (12/22/02).

At Ford Field, Hanson is 27-of-29 on field goal attempts (.931), which included three fourth-quarter or OT game-winners and a long of 54 yards. His two only misses were attempts from 55 and 57 yards (both in 2002).

With a 54-yard field goal against Oakland (11/2) Hanson has 24 career field goals of 50-yards or more which is the third-best in NFL history. His 54-yard field goal was his fifth career kick of at least 54 yards.

Hanson will play in his 186th consecutive game this week against the Seattle Seahawks at Seahawks Stadium which ranks second all-time in the Lions’ record books for most games played. Hanson has never missed a game in his 12-year stint with Detroit.

Lions’ Headquarters & Training Facility The Ford family not only made a commitment to bring the pride of the Detroit Lions back into downtown Detroit with the construction of Ford Field, but they also decided that the new training and practice facility would be rivaled by no other team in the National Football League. The Lions' $35.5 million headquarters and training facility was built on a 22.7-acre parcel and is located just west of Detroit between Allen Park and Dearborn. In fact, the new facility is just down the street from Ford Motor Co.'s World Headquarters. The franchise broke ground on the new state-of-the-art facility in August 2000 and moved into its new digs in March 2002. The 460,000 square foot complex includes a full indoor practice field, 2.5 outdoor practice fields, a state-of-the art weight and training room, a massive locker room, a hydrotherapy room, a spacious equipment room, a cafeteria, meeting rooms for each position, a player lounge, a 103-person auditorium for full team meetings and large press conferences, a studio, a library and archive room, a media room and offices for all personnel. In an effort to keep the environment clean, William Clay Ford Jr. also made sure the building was built with renewable and recyclable products. The bamboo floors in the lobby, latex paint and rubber flooring have all contributed to this cause. The facility also provides a full-size indoor field and 2.5 fields outside so the team has plenty of space for team practices.

Hanson ranks first in field goals made for the franchise (275),

field goals attempted (342) and points scored (1,198). He is also second on two of the Lions’ major career scoring and kicking records. His career totals of 373 extra points and 379 extra points attempted trail Eddie Murray’s career totals. Murray’s career totals include 244 field goals in 325 attempts, 1,113 points scored and 381 extra points in 386 attempts.

With a last minute injury to P John Jett, Hanson was called into duty as the team’s punter against the San Francisco 49ers (10/5) – his first full game as a punter. Hanson punted seven times, one of which was downed inside the 20, for 264 (37.7 avg.) yards and a career-long of 50 yards.

Hanson made his 23rd career field goal from 50-yards or more at Denver (9/28) when he hit a 52-yarder at INVESCO Field at Mile High. In doing so, he became the third player in NFL history to accomplish that feat.

Hanson’s 49-yard field goal vs. Minnesota (10/13/02) marked the 245th field goal of his career and made him the franchise’s all-time leader in field goals made.

On the first extra point Hanson kicked at Arizona (11/18/01) he became the second player in Lions' history to score 1,000 career points. The first player in Lions’ history to reach that mark was Eddie Murray, who scored 1,113 points during his 12-year career (1980-91) in Detroit.

FORD FIELD The 2002 season marked a new era in Detroit Lions history when the team opened its new downtown Detroit stadium, Ford Field, one of the most impressive sports and entertainment venues ever built. The Lions’ home is an incomparable 65,000-seat facility that includes a giant glass wall, revealing the picturesque Detroit skyline, and the old Hudson’s Warehouse, originally built in 1920. The massive project encompasses a total of 1.85 million square feet of development. The old Hudson’s Warehouse, a major cornerstone of Ford Field, houses most of the stadium luxury seats, press box, restaurants, food courts, lounge areas, banquet facilities, entertainment venues and commercial space. The inclusion of the warehouse into the stadium project allows the sightlines at Ford Field to be among the very best in the NFL. In fact, the locker room facilities have been built in the basement of the seven-story historic Detroit structure. On November 1, 2000, the NFL selected Ford Field to be the host site of Super Bowl XL to be played February 5, 2006. It will mark the first Super Bowl in the Detroit Metro area since the Pontiac Silverdome was the site for Super Bowl XVI, played January 24, 1982. This past summer, the NCAA selected the stadium to host the 2009 Men’s Basketball Final Four. Ford Field will get its first taste of basketball on December 14, 2003 when the Michigan State Spartans host the University of Kentucky Wildcats in a college basketball showdown. The game is expected to draw more than 75,000 fans, which would set a world-record attendance for a basketball game. College football returned to Ford Field on August 30, 2003 with the inaugural Detroit Classic with Alabama State emerging victorious against Florida A&M 38-22. Last December, the Motor City Bowl was played at Ford Field for the first time with Boston College defeating Toledo, 51-25. The stadium has been utilized for many non-sports events as well. Detroit native Eminem hosted two concerts in July 2003 that drew nearly 100,000 people to the venue. It hosted its first big concert on October 12, 2002 when the legendary band, the Rolling Stones, performed.
