VISION

School: At Bailey Middle School, learning is not

optional, it is required. Our entire learning

community will work interdependently to ensure

high academic achievement in all areas for all

students.

SMART GOALS

Increase student achievement in Reading and Math in all grade levels, with an emphasis on increasing reading achievement in grades 6-8, resulting in at least 75% of students making growth in Math and Reading as measured by authentic work products, common assessments, and formative data.

Introduce and/or utilize the Common Core Standards with the NCSCOS to ensure that at least 90% of students perform at or above grade level in all tested content areas and at least 75% of students meet high growth standards as measured by authentic work products, common assessments, and formative data.

Decrease the achievement gap between the performance of EC and non-EC students in reading and math by 10%. Decrease the achievement gap between the performance of LEP and non-LEP students in reading and math by 10%. Decrease the achievement gap between the performance of African American and White students in reading and math by 10%. This will be measured by authentic work products, common assessments, and formative data.

SCHOOL PROFILE

Bailey Middle School is beginning its seventh year and has generated a reputation of high student achievement. We are

currently rated as a School of Excellence.

Bailey has a diverse student and staff population. Bailey currently has 24% of our students receiving free and lunch,

which is the same as it was last year. We currently have 1,503 students, which is made up of 79% White, 10% African

American, 7% Multi-Racial, 2% Native American, 2% Asian. In addition, 7% of our population is Hispanic, 8% receive EC

services, and 24% are enrolled in the talent development program. Our population is continually changing and we are

tailoring our program to address the needs of our diverse population.

In the past six years, our students have experienced high levels of academic growth and high proficiency rates. Our

school composite has improved, and this year we became recognized as a High Growth Honor School of Excellence. Two years

ago, we were honored to be accessed by a SQR (School Quality Review) team, which rated our program as well-developed. We

did receive feedback that we need to improve the differentiation and rigor within our program. As a result, we created a SIP

goal based on increasing our ability to effectively differentiate instruction in support of increased achievement. We embrace

our achievements and look forward to building on our successes in all areas.

We have tremendous support from the community. We have a strong PTSA that contributes to the many opportunities

offered at our school.

Bailey Middle has an array of extra-curricular activities. We have very successful athletic teams and strong support for

their programs. We offer during, before, and after school clubs and co-curricular activities such as National Junior Honor

Society, Math Counts, Builders Club, Battle of the Books, and many others.

Though we are doing well as a school, and improving each year, we still have academic challenges that we hope to

overcome. High academic achievement for all students is our primary focus.

teams. Maximum teaching load will be used to allow teachers in specific areas of

the curriculum to teach students designated for specific skill needs and to address

the large number of students requesting elective classes.

4. Please state how the waiver will promote achievement of performance goals.

This waiver will allow more flexibility in grouping students to meet their

abilities and needs and thus should enhance their achievement on the performance

goals.
