THESE GIFTS REALLY ARE APPRECIATEDThese days, there are many ways for you to make gifts to the Heart of America

Council. If you are like most people, however, you think only of cash gifts in sup-port of Scouting. As valuable as cash gifts are for the Council, gifts of appreciatedproperty may be more beneficial for many people to give than cash.

Do you have any stocks, bonds, land, or other assets that may have appreciatedin value? If you sold one of these items you would probably owe capital gains tax onthe difference between the fair market value and what you paid for the property. This means less money for you to contribute, reinvest, or spend.

By contributing the property directly to the Heart of America Council you mayreceive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the property that you are con-tributing. Even if the property has appreciated in value, you won’t owe any capitalgains tax on the gift. If you use appreciated property to create a charitable incometrust, you receive the same benefits.

Whether you have stock, land, artwork, antiques, vintage cars, or other types ofappreciated property, contact us about the advantages of making these gifts to yourlocal council. Your gifts will be appreciated, in more ways than one!

Please contact Jason Baxendale at 816-942-9333 ext. 129.

STANDARDS FOR PRIVACY ON TRIPS OR OUTINGS

To support the BSA policy of two-deep leadership on all trips or outings, wemust address the sleeping arrangements of male and female leaders.

All leaders are expected to reflect high moral standards established by customs, traditional values, and religious teachings.

Male and female leaders require separate sleeping facilities. Married couplesmay share the same quarters if appropriate facilities are available.

Male and female youth participants must not share the same sleeping facility. When tents are used, no youth will stay in the tent of an adult other than his/herparent or guardian.

When housing other than tents are used, separate housing must be provided forboth male and female participants. Adult male leaders must be responsible for the maleparticipants. Adult female leaders must be responsible for the female participants.

Adult leaders need to respect the privacy of youth members in situations wherethe youth are changing clothes or taking showers, and intrude only to the extent thathealth and safety require. Adults also need to protect their own privacy in similarsituations.

Although it is not mandatory, councils are strongly encouraged to have separateshower and latrine facilities for females. In camps where separate facilities are notavailable, separate shower schedules for males and females should be posted. Use thebuddy system for latrine use by having one person wait outside the entrance or useOccupied and Unoccupied signs on door latches.

CUB SCOUT TRIPS AND EXCURSIONSTrips or excursions by Cub Scout packs under chartered organization leader-

ship are a recognized part of the Cub Scout program when conducted in accor-dance with established procedures.

Permits for such tours shall be issued locally or nationally, depending on thedistance traveled.

The National Council has established the following guidelines:• Trips normally will be one-day excursions.• Although overnight stays are permitted, they are not encouraged.• When overnight stops are necessary, participants will stay in private

homes, motels, or hotels. The local council may approve lock-ins orovernight programming at local museums.

• Den leaders, pack leaders, and parents are expected to accompany theboys on approved trips.

• Tiger Cubs are limited to boy-parent excursions or program-managedfamily camping designed for the entire family unit.

It is the policy of the Boy Scouts of America that only one adult may never leadtrips and outings. Two registered adult leaders or one registered adult leader anda parent of a participant, one of whom must be 21 years of age or older, arerequired for all trips or outings. It is the responsibility of the chartered organiza-tion of any Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Varsity Scout team, or Venture crewto stress to the committees and leadership of the unit that sufficient adult leader-ship must be provided on all trips and outings.

TROOP 83 SCOUT SAVES THE DAY

On a rainy May day Troop 83 Scout Jared Jones was doing what exemplifiesScouting. During a downpour in Olathe, Jared noticed a home with elderly residentsfrom California was about to experience flooding waters heading for their basement. The home owners unaccustomed to Kansas rain storms were alerted by Jared. Alongwith his father, Jared set to work with mechanical pumps and ditches to re-direct thewater toward the street and storm drains, thus protecting the home from seriousflooding. Without Jared’s quick response, this situation could have been much worst. The family affected by Jared’s actions call him a hero. Jared, a 6th grade RidgeviewElementary student did what any good Scout would do, without hesitating. Weshould feel proud to call Jared a fellow Scout, for he exemplifies the true meaning ofScouting. WELL DONE, JARED!!

2002 FRIENDS OF SCOUTINGFriends of Scouting 2002 is getting ready to kick off another successful cam-

paign. Thank you to all the packs & troops that supported the Friends of Scouting2001 Campaign and to all the presenters for their enthusiasm. It was a fantastic suc-cess and you made it happen! We are now asking you to join in and help the TrailsWest Scouting Program in scheduling you presentation.

We ask that you schedule your presentation between November 2001 and Feb-ruary 2002 during Pack Blue and Gold Banquets and Troop Courts of Honor.Schedule your presentation now so we will be able to plan for a successful presenta-tion to ensure a great year of Scouting! Please call Chad Wyancko at (816) 942-9333ext. 162 to schedule your presentation.

FOOTBALL & RECRUITING, IT JUST GOES TOGETHER“ Down, Set, GO!!” With football starting and our favorite team getting ready

to hit the gridiron, now is the time to start recruiting the newest youth into theadventure of Scouting. The district is standing by to get into the game to help yourunit score that touchdown! At the August Roundtable you received a packet of infor-mation to help you plan your game strategy. However, if you need any assistance to“go long” for that touchdown, call Chad Wyancko at (816) 942-9333 ext. 162.Chad is ready to hit all the schools to recruit for your unit. He has flyer, yard-signs,posters, not to mention going into schools to recruit. Think about Back to SchoolNights to recruit not just boys, but their parents to be on your committee. Whatabout Fall Festivals to recruit new boys? It’s time to get into the recruiting game andgo for the end-zone!

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS NEEDED!!Volunteers are the life-blood of Scouting, and we need your assistance. The Trails

West District Committee still needs members to join its team. The Camping andOutdoor Promotions Chair position still needs to be filled. There is always a need tofind volunteers that are interested in helping with training, camporee, finance, pro-gram and our first rate commissioner staff. If you or someone you know has thoughtabout serving above the unit level or just have the need to help Scouting, the districtcan always find a place for you. Please contact Chad Wyancko at (913) 942-9333 ext162, and let him know what your talents are so you can get started today.

Troop 83 recognizes Jared at a recent Court of Honor for his good turn & Scouting spirit.

Basic Leader TrainingThe brand-new leader training will

be rolled out this month. For those ofyou who may not know, we are doingaway with the old Cub Leader Basicand the Scout Master Fundamentals. Now all leaders will attend the same“Basic Essentials Training.” This train-ing takes about 90 minutes. Then everyleader will go to a “specific” trainingdepending on his/her position. Thesespecific trainings may or may not occuron the same day as the essentials train-ing.

On October 13, we will have ourfirst Essentials Training at the Lexing-ton United Methodist Church. Regis-tration will begin about 9:00 a.m., withthe training starting about 9:30. Lunchwill be provided for those who will bestaying for the Cub Leader SpecificTraining. All others will be scheduledat a later date. So, everyone who needsany training should plan on attendingthe essentials, and your new cub leadersshould plan on staying for both. Bring$2.00 for the cost of your lunch. Thisis a very important part of Scouting.Units with trained leaders will offer abetter program, have a stronger unitand will retain more of their member-ship than units without trained leaders.

Rechartering 2002It’s that time of year, so let’s make it

better than ever! Recharter packets will

be available at the October Roundtable, however, you must schedule a “recharter-ing meeting” before your packet will begiven to you. Yes, another new concept. This year the Commissioner staff will becoming to your unit meetings to helpyou with your chartering problems.Tom Butler will be spearheading thisoperation and he will take no prisoners. So come to Roundtable, schedule ameeting with Tom, pick up your packet, and make sure to have it in by December15. We will not have any lapsed unitsthis year!!!!

Ifyour unit has never sold in the past, youmay want to consider it this year. This isa great fundraiser. You could very easilymake enough to send all your boys tocamp, pay for all your advancement andprogram materials, and never spend adime out of your own pocket. Thinkabout it. Last year Pack 414 in Carroll-ton earned almost $4,000. They’ll tellyou it’s worth the time and effort. So, doyour unit a favor and urge them to sellpopcorn this year, you won’t be sorry.
