If you’re in the market for a large screen television and you’ve been considering a 36" direct view, you’ll

want to check out Hitachi’s 43" Projection Televisions. With the 43" display you get the dramatic impact of

a larger screen size in a much lighter and shallower cabinet.

Hitachi’s standard format and widescreen 43" digital projection televisions can display HDTV* and

are loaded with all the Hitachi innovation you’ve come to expect: Exclusive optical technology;

Magic Focus touch-of-a-button convergence, and the powerful VirtualHD circuitry that upconverts all

incoming sources to a high definition-like image.

The 43" standard aspect ratio and widescreen models both have substantially more screen area than a 36"

direct-view, which makes a huge difference when you’re designing your home entertainment system. And

the compact footprint of our 43" models lets you put them in places you might not have thought possible.

It all adds up to a compelling choice. Get the big picture (in a smaller space) with Hitachi’s 43"

From our exclusive wide neck cathode ray tubes

to our six element lens systems, Hitachi Projection

Televisions are engineered to produce the best

high resolution pictures possible.

The design of a projection television’s CRTs is responsible for much of the final

picture quality that you see. A projection television’s picture begins as an electron beam

generated by an electron gun and is focused at the faceplate. How precisely this beam is

controlled determines, in part, how much detail and resolution can be seen in the final

picture. Because we design and manufacture our own CRTs, Hitachi has a unique

advantage in creating high performance electron guns with larger electromagnetic

focus elements, or "lenses", for greater control of the shape, size and focus of the

electron beam.

Hitachi’s widescreen SWX series incorporate a super-wide 36.5mm neck for the CRT –

26% wider than standard. This provides a much larger "sweet spot" for the electron beam to pass through.

The wider neck enables more precise control over the electron beam to meet HDTV’s high performance

requirements.

A projection television’s lens system makes a critical difference in image quality.

Optical quality depends in large part on how many lenses are used – the fewer the lenses the more each

individual lens must process the image. Hitachi’s exclusive lens systems utilize up to six separate lenses

that are designed to process the picture in precise steps for the sharpest, clearest image.

The polished surfaces of the lenses and the inside of the lens barrel itself are potential "mirrors" for

reflections that can reduce overall contrast in the picture. Hitachi solves this problem by multi-coating the

lens surfaces and blackening the inside of the lens barrel so that internal reflections are virtually eliminated.

The lens design also includes color purity lenses. These additional optical elements remove impurities

that are generated by the CRT phosphors, ensuring the red CRT produces only pure red, and the green CRT

only pure green.

F r o n t S u r f a c e M i r r o rHitachi has improved the mirror by makingit a front-surface design. In conventionalmirrors, light must pass through the glass

on its way to the reflective surface of themirror, and then has to pass through the glass again

on its way to the screen. This results in significant light lossand ghost image reflection. By putting the reflective surface on the

front of the glass, Hitachi maximizes brightness and focus accuracy..

L i q u i d C o u p l i n gThe area where the CRT faceplate meets the lens assembly surface is anengineering challenge due to the inherent back-and-forth reflections betweenthe faceplate and lens that can wash out the picture. The solution is a liquidcoupling that creates a single optical unit, reducing internal reflections andminimizing veiling glare. The liquid coupling serves a dual purpose in that italso keeps the CRTs cooler, allowing them to be operated at higher outputlevels for a brighter picture

picture with a wide 160 degree viewing angle. A fresnel lens ensures even light dispersion from edge-to-

edge and corner-to-corner. The lenticular lens employs a series of vertical ribs and black stripes that create

a wide viewing angle and a high contrast image. The final element is a high-contrast protective shield. This

screen provides protection for the lenticular screen and is tinted to improve contrast by reducing the

amount of ambient light reflected from the screen.

HDTV is the new format for digital television, but it will take some time to become truly commonplace

in our homes. In the meantime, most of today’s programming comes to us as a low-resolution signal.

Television pictures are comprised of many frames flashing before our eyes. Our Current NTSC System

produces 30 frames each second. Each frame is divided into two halves, or fields – all odd lines are

scanned across and down the screen in one-sixtieth of a second, with the remaining even lines

scanned in the next sixtieth of a second. When our eyes put these two sequential fields together, we

see completed frames. When the frames are displayed in rapid succession, we perceive motion.

While this format has been the standard for over 50 years, it has inherent drawbacks. A significant

deficiency is the lack of resolution, or the inability to adequately reproduce detail. Also, because the

two fields are displayed sequentially, there are a number of problems when displaying events that are

filled with fast movement, like a car race or football game.

But the biggest drawback to the existing standard is that it doesn’t take full advantage of Hitachi’s

powerful display performance. Fully utilizing this capability requires sophisticated engineering to

increase the quality of the signal to match the ultra-high performance of Hitachi’s CRT and lens

technologies.

At Hitachi, the finest resolution possible is a constant and ultimate goal, so our engineers designed a

digital processor that could improve the standard NTSC signal.

VirtualHD works as a super computer to convert conventional signals into new signals that are as close

to the resolution of HDTV as possible. VirtualHD constantly analyses incoming signals and

instantaneously decides how to best up-convert them.

For signals that are already high definition, VirtualHD leaves them untouched to assure

uncompromised performance.

The Hitachi VirtualHD processor

functions as a high-performance

video computer.

V i r t u a l H D ™: D i g i t a l f o r To d a y a n d To m o r r o w

Conventional NTSC signals have fewer interlaced lines which resultsin lower resolution and visible line artifacts.

VirtualHD processes conventional signals to create more pictureinformation. The result is a detailed, high resolution picture.

Page 9: 2001 PROJECTION TELEVISION

Large screen entertainment begins with

cinema, and VirtualHD intelligently creates

crystal clear movie magic.

VirtualHD™ begins its magic by digitizing both fields of the

conventional signal into memory and combining them into a

single, reference image. As it reads each field into digital

memory, VirtualHD oversamples the signal to increase the

number of data points on each line across the screen – more

than doubling them for smoother reproduction of curves and

diagonals. However, the conversion to the reference image

presents a couple of challenges. Since all content originates as

either film or video, VirtualHD must first recognize the native

format, and then process the signal accordingly. This is no

easy task -- there are fundamental differences between film

and video, the biggest being frame rate.

Film is shot at 24 frames per second. Video originates at 30.

To convert film into video, a process called 3:2 pulldown is

used during the film-to-tape transfer to reconcile the different

frame rates. The result of this transfer is that some video

frames consist of images from two very different film frames.

For conventional television this doesn’t present any significant

problems. However, in order to create new high quality video

frames this 3:2 process must be detected. VirtualHD circuitry

automatically senses the film-source material and employs a

very sophisticated algorithm that properly forms new video

frames without mixed film-frame combinations.

Film Source:24 frames/sec.

3:2 pulldown conversion to video:30 frames/sec.,60 fields/sec.

Incorrect field pairing:60 frames/sec.

VirtualHD’s 3:2 pulldown correction automatically senses images that were transferredfrom film and intelligently recombines the video fields so that each new video frame ismade from a single film frame.

Smoother moving images are produced using advanced motion detection processing that checks 8 reference points to createeach new point.

VirtualHD detects and processes sporting

events and other fast-paced video to

eliminate motion artifacts.

New Point Reference Points

Shows that originate on video present a different challenge. Each video frame is actually

made up of two half-frames, or fields, that are captured one after the other. If a scene

depicts rapid motion, the first field will look very different from the second. One of the

most basic ways to upgrade conventional NTSC signals is to combine each two-field

sequence into a single frame, but this can often result in a blurry picture with annoying

motion artifacts.

Again, VirtualHD to the rescue. If it senses that the program originated in video, it

continuously performs motion detection duties on every scan line. It checks all adjacent

scan lines in eight different directions. If there is a difference between any two fields, it

intelligently creates, or interpolates a new line that properly represents the transition in

time.

If all this sounds technologically advanced, it is. And VirtualHD is there to make it

happen transparently at incredible speed right before your eyes. The result is a smooth,

accurate picture regardless of picture content.

Page 11: 2001 PROJECTION TELEVISION

After properly creating a solid digital reference image, VirtualHD then goes to work to create more picture

information – the key to a more film-like image. It does this in two directions: horizontally and vertically.

Horizontal resolution across each scanning line is

increased to 1,280 pixels. VirtualHD increases the

480 vertical lines in the reference image to either

540 progressive or 1080 interlaced lines,

depending on viewer preference. The 540

progressive lines produce an extremely-sharp,

well-defined image, and the 1,080 interlaced lines

display a smooth, film-like picture.

VirtualHD upconverts

lower resolution signals to

near HDTV levels.

VirtualHD upconverts the standard 480i signal to your choice of 540p, or, for the best picture possible, 1080i.

A projection television uses magnetic fields to control the alignment (convergence) of the three CRTs.

As a result, the unique magnetic influences within your home can affect the accuracy of the picture at the

screen.

Magic Focus® is the world’s first automatic digital convergence system. With the touch of a button, it

adjusts the set using 8 strategically-positioned optical sensors to control 8,192 alignment points.

This year, Hitachi extends the Magic Focus technology to a greater range of models by introducing

Magic Focus 4. This efficient system with four sensor points also has the benefit of speed – it can

properly align the picture in as little as ten seconds.

both formats will co-exist in the future. To solve this display dilemma, Hitachi has designed a range of

viewing modes that enables the two screen formats to display a range of different images. Our advanced

digital processing technology provides three modes for displaying standard images on widescreen and

four modes for displaying widescreen on standard televisions, all available with the touch of a button.

Our designers never forget that a large TV is much more than just electronic equipment – it’s also a piece

of furniture. So we take extra care to ensure that the cabinet design is classic and will complement any

décor. Using only the finest materials, we design and build our own cabinets. And we provide quality

testing beyond industry requirements that ensure a solid product built to last for years of enjoyment. The

final result is extraordinary designs that are not only the best televisions in the world, they also stand on

their own as finely crafted pieces of furniture.

Our projection televisions are engineered to have the highest level of compatibility.

Component video is a method of transferring video information using multiple, discrete signals. This

allows video information to be transmitted as individual elements rather than combined together.

It’s the purest signal that TVs can receive today. All models have component inputs that allow them to

accept high performance video sources like DVD, satellite and digital tuners. UltraVision Digital models

incorporate state of the art component inputs that accept DTV formats including 480i, 480p, 720p and

1080i HDTV.

All models are also built to receive multiple video/audio inputs, like composite, S-video (Y/C), and stereo

audio, and can be connected to external audio systems for dynamically expanded audio performance.

Certain models have front panel inputs for convenient temporary connection of video components.

All models include Auto Link, which detects an incoming signal and automatically turns on the television.
