Taking about doing editorials early well this one must beat what I have done in the past. Here I am writing this on July'sClub Night. The reason for this early editorial is due to the fact that I am away on my summer holidays to New England, USAfollowed by about 4 days home then offto Tiree for this years IOTA so this doesn't leave much time for doing my newsletterbits and pieces. The unfortunate thing is by the time that you are reading this my holidays and Tiree will be all over, very sadindeed.

So what has happened in July. First of all there was VHF Field Day and I am hoping that Colin GM0CLN will have written afull report about this for inclusion in the newsletter. Fortunately we did not suf[er much interference from the Lothian's RadioClub even though they had set up a "fuII" power section about 6Kms from where we were. The contest well what can I say,6M was tremendous with our best DX being Zimbabwe and I .5 hours of sporadic E on 2 metres on the Sunday working intoLZ,YU,I, etc. The next big event was the trip to Tiree for IOTA but unfortunately I cannot comment on that, as it is still tohappen. I also know tlat some club members will have been involved in some other contests, but again I cannot comment onthem. Basically July has been a very heavy contesting month.

To the future with a HUGE reminder that it is Junk Night on Friday 1Ift in the Community Centre. (See the event column forfull details). If you would like to donate aaything for the Raffle and refreshments I would be most grateful indeed. I also hopethat you will all make an efilort to come along to what is a great night plus at the same time help raise some money for ouradopted charity "The British Heart Foundation".August is a real busy month, as well as the Junk Night we will be putting a Demonstration Station at Haddington Gala Day,taking part in the 70MHz Trophy Contest from Mainslaughter Law and lastly a real social event by doing Lighthouse Week-end (GB2LBN) at Barns Ness Lighthouse Dunbar. Also during this month a visit on Thursday wening 24h August, to theQuarry at Blue Circle, Dunbar is also arranged. Finally for myself I start another Novice Course aiming for the DecemberNovice Exam. August is therefore a busy, busy month.

One thing that is disappointing myself is the lack of somewhere to go to study for the RAE. Unfortunately the colleges unlessthey can get a "certain number" then the course cannot be run. I know of a few people that would like to sit the RAE but justcan't. I would like to try myself at teaching the RAE but due to all my other commitments both work and home life it is notfeasible. Once again this year we were luck y with the weather conditions giving us all a gratd opportunity to go out and play some"mobile" radio. Only 5 stations took part and for those who didn't you missed an enjoyable evening, never mind there is al-ways next year. Poor Wallace unfortunately had to give up as his audio was being severely distorted basically sounded like hewas getting RF feedback into his audio input. Ron GM4IKU also seemed to suffer problems from an audio point of viewwhich turned out to be (a) location of his 2M whip on the car and (b) problems with his mike. Fortunately Ron resolved hisproblems and continued to take part. Caroline 2MlH\fR managed to make her first IIF contact into Spain and was very eagerto make many more. Although we could hear stations in Argentina (LU), Brazil (PY) and other South American countries wewere unable to contact them. (I think you need to come to Lighthouses Weekend, Caroline and get plenty of practice in work-ing those DX countries). Colin GM0CLN was very limited to his activity due to "gardening activities" but he still managed afew contacts. The out right winners Ron GM0NTL and Cambell MMIAVA definitely did very well and managed to worksome nice countries. The best was ZD8LJD in the Ascension Islands. Thanks to you both for "piggy backing" both RonGM4IKU and myself on to him and allowing us both to obtain the contact. For myself it was the first time I had ever heard theAscension Islands far less being able to contact them.Overall another fun night enjoyed by everyone taking part. The scoring system I feel is now righ, unless you all think other-wise, but I am sure you will let me know.Well done to the winners.

e&ps Me &NNgA,e trA&&98 gP&AgE A$ 9F ilffiJJ as&V 890@A short month this time due to holidays etc. but still an event-ful one. Sporadic E on both 50MHz and l44Wlz togetherwith a very good aurora affecting the same bands has spicedup the VHF tables considerably....

Bob GM4UYZ sent me a surnmary of his recent activity be-fore jetting offon holiday (I bet it's all a distant memory bynow Bobl). He openly admits that he hasn't been too busydue to the usual summer busy season! His additions were...l8MHz ; U.S.A.(W); 2l\&lz : Germany@L), France(F),Slovenia(S5); 28MHz : Spain(EA), France(F), Scotland(GM), Jordan(IY), Ascension Is.(ZD8); l44lvftIz : Scotland(1066). If my arithmetic is still up to scratch that makes addi-tions of 9 on FIF and 1 on VHF.

John M0BEX from the Stockport Radio Society was next tosend in his report this month. He has been busy withGBOSRS and GBBSRS but still has some usefu1 additionswhich keep him well in contention at the top of the IIF table. This month the new ones were. .. TWlz: Austria(OE),Branl(PY), Latvia(Yl), Venezuela(YV); 14MHz : Guyana(8R),Eire(EI), Argentina(Ll|, Luxembourg(LX), Anguilla(\{P2E),Venezuela(Y$; 18MHz : Greenland(OX), Denmark(OZ);zllr4Hz: Luxembourg(LX), Belgium(ON), San Marino(T7); So far as G4WLL is concerned the scoring contacts (which28MHz : Spain@A), Balearic Is(EA6), Flungary(HA), Jordan don't count for GM4WLL because the operation was from a(tY), Finland(OH), Czech Republic(OK), Slovakia(OM), different country) were with.. . l44lrIllz: France(IN99, JN09,Sweden(SM), Bosnia(T9). This adds up to an IIF increase of JNl8), England(Io70, IO80, IO81, IO82, IO83, IO84, IO91,24.

It's been primarily a VHF month at GMOCLN. Getting ac-cess to some SOMFIz equipment with a wire antenna in the loftand a very good aurora on 151166 July have helped a lot.The new ones are... 18MF{z : Germany(Dl), Norway(LA),Slovakia(OM), Sweden(SM), Poland(SP); zaMHz : Norway(LA); 19VftIz : Asiatic Russia(UA9); 50MHz : Scotland(IO85, 1086), France(JO10), Germany(JN47, JN49, JN58,JO50, JO5l, JO60, JO61, 1062),Iraly(JN52, JN53), Slovakia(JN69), Slovenia(JN76, JN86), Austria(JN77, JN87), Czech

Republic(JN88, JN89, JO70), Poland(JN99, JO71, JO80,JO81, JO90, JO91, KN09, KO00); l44l\ftIz: France(IN98,JN09, JN19, IN29, JO10), Eire(IO62), Wales(IO71), N.Ireland(IO74), Switzerland(JN37, JN46), Germany(JN49,JN57, JN58, JO30, JO32, JO40, JO50, JO51, JO60, JO61,JO62, JA64} Croatia(JN86), Czech Republic(JN8g, JO70),England(Jo00), Norway(JO59), Sweden(JO79) That makes7 more on HF and 74 more on VHF for me this month.

Jim MMOBQI has been on holiday BUT has also been to theSummer Isles @U-092) and has oaught lots of sporadic-E on50MI{z since his last update. He just gave me totals anddoesn't detail any highlights although, as you no doubt read inlast months newsletter, the Summer Isles was definitely themain one! The resulting increase due to all Jim's recent ac-tivities is 86 on IIF and 127 on VHF!

Finally,'David GM4WLL sent in an update and also an entry'Just for fun" for G4WLLIP in IO94 square during his tripsouth on VHF NFD weekend. The GM4WLL new ones thistime round are... 144MHz : France(IN98), Belgium(Jol0).An extra 3 on WIF for David in the last month.

IO92,IA93,IO94, JO01, JO02), Isle of Man(IO74), Scotland(IO85, 1086), Hungary(JN97), Slovak Republic(JN98), Bel-gium(JO10), Germany(JO31), Netherlands(JO33), Romania(KN16), Bulgaria(KN32); 4321\/frIz : Isle of Man(IO74),England(IO93). A total of 40 on VHF isn't bad for one dayswork!

Could you please make sure that I receive your next updatesby Wednesday 16e August at the latest. Thanks in advanceforyourhelp. GoodDX andT3until nextmonth.
