Believe and Achieve
April 2016
Principal’s Message April is here and with it we say farewell to a much-needed Spring Break. The students have been working hard preparing for our end of year assessment –
“Smarter Balanced Assessments” (SBA). Our students took the math
portion of the “Interim Test”. The Interim test is a practice test and students receive scores that both teachers and students use to set goals and adjust instruction. Score Reports should be going home before Spring Break. Be on the look out for these important reports and take the time to discuss with your child their performance. Encouragement is free but a highly valued commodity.
Waiakeaicreate: Did you know that Waiakea Intermediate has a new online
magazine celebrating the creativity of Waiakea Intermediate School? Janice Crowl our 6th grade English teacher created this on-ling magazine to share and celebrate all the wonderful work students are producing. We will be sharing submissions of short stories and essays, poetry, photography, fine art, even science and social studies projects. Be sure to check it out! The website address is http://waiakeaicreate.weebly.com
Waiakea Intermediate School is a collaborative, student-centered community in which each individual is encouraged, supported, and academically challenged to reach his/her maximum
potential as an active lifelong learner.

PBIS focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior of all students. It is a proactive, data driven approach to prevention and response for classroom and school discipline issues. As part of our PBIS Implementation we will be using the HERO program. HERO is a cloud-based student behavior management software for schools and districts. The real benefit of HERO is that it captures School-wide behavior data in real-time,
2
which fuels the schools efforts to promote positive behavior and discourage negative behaviors. Students will be able to earn HERO Points for displaying positive behaviors. It will be important for students to redeem their points. This is why we are planning to
open a school store. Our PTA will play a crucial role in the schools ability to open a school store. Please join Waiakea Intermediate’s PTA and/or consider becoming a Board member.

At a Glance Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a way for schools to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, kids learn about behavior, just as they learn other subjects like math or science. The key to PBIS is prevention, not punishment
