THE VIENNA AGREEMENT

Globalization requires worldwide identical standards.

The boom of the regional European Standardization at the end of the Eighties raised suspicions of a “Fortress Europe”. The “Vienna Agreement” between the European Organization for Standardization CEN and the International Organization for Standardization ISO has been signed in 1991. The objective: ensuring via a set of mechanisms that the European and Inter- national Standards are not conflicting, but identical or at least compatible.

A retrospective view of two decades of experience in the interaction between regional and international standardization shall be the basis for a look into the future: what is needed to develop globally identical standards in an optimal way considering the existence of strong regional economic blocks.

FACTS & FIGURES

Austrian Standards

Austrian Standards manages a unique network of about 5.900 experts to bring together their manifold knowledge and expertise. Thereby, we create the basis for the development of generally accepted standards.

We make this know-how accessible through publications, trainings and further services for application. Standards guarantee high quality and security and also promote competitiveness and economic growth.

Vienna

• has more green space than virtually any other city and is proud of its surrounding Vienna Woods that have been designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its high diversity of rare and endangered species,

• represents a significant political hub in Europe being host to many major international organizations, such as the United Nations and OPEC and

• is proud of a growing Tourism sector as an important economic factor with 10.9 million overnight stays in 2010.

Austria

Austria, comprising an area of 83.858 km2, is a federal republic state with a parliamentary democracy.

The country consists of 9 independent federal states (Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna) with their own provincial governments. The national language is German.

The federal legislation is exercised by the national council („Nationalrat“) together with the Upper House of Parliament („Bundesrat“) – the two chambers of Parliament. Austria is a member of the European Union, the United Nations as well as most UN organizations.
