I feel privileged and honored to represent the United Nations in

Armenia and I am excited to mark the 20th anniversary of the United Nations

presence in the country. As part of the celebrations of this milestone, I am

delighted to present this photo album - “20 Years: United Nations in

Armenia”.It is hard and challenging to capture the value we bring to bear and the

strength of our partnerships in a foreword but I hope that the photo album

will speak many thousands of words to each of you as you browse through

its pages.

I cannot emphasize enough the significance the United Nations places

upon its partnerships with the various actors in the Armenian society.

Strategic collaboration with the Government, the private sector, academia,

NGOs and the wider civil society has been instrumental in demonstrating

our role as an impartial facilitator and promoter of Armenia’s transition

towards a functional democracy and market economy. Over the years joint-

ly with the national stakeholders and other partners the United Nations has

delivered innumerable benefits for the country and its citizens with the

transparency, integrity and neutrality that are hallmarks of our work.

We have contributed towards the advancement of sustainable human

development and achievement of the nationalized Millennium

Development Goals through enhancing state capacity, initiating and sup-

porting profound legislative reforms and strengthening social fabric and the

country’s resilience.

The United Nations is well positioned and recognized as a key and

strategic development partner and the United Nations Agencies, Funds and

Programs enjoy high level of trust and respect for their coherent and harmo-

nized support towards advancing sustainable development. Based on the

current spirit of partnership, I am sure this trend will continue into the future

and we will jointly witness the successful advancement of the modern

Armenian state!

I am delighted to extend my sincere congratulations to the UN system

in Armenia on the occasion of publishing the photo album titled 20 Years:

United Nations in Armenia . This is a fascinating chronicle, depicting the

profound contribution of the United Nations operation over the past 20

years towards establishing the foundations of independent statehood and

building market-based economy and functional democracy.

The United Nations in Armenia has positioned itself as a credible and

trusted partner and has meaningfully supported Government s efforts

towards prosperity and sustainable development. The work of the United

Nations reaches every corner of the national development discourse, affects

our lives and makes the world a better place.

The Government of Armenia is profoundly thankful and appreciative

of the strategic, relevant and targeted assistance provided by the UN and we

would like to acknowledge the indispensible contribution of the organiza-

tion towards the successful completion of the social transformation process.

Cooperation with the United Nations is essential in implementation of our

reform agenda.

Having gained membership in the most reputable inter-governmental

organization, bounded by the principles of the United Nations Charter,

considering the role of the UN in human development as irreplaceable,

Armenia brought its contribution to the comprehensive work of the

Organization and actively continues to do so in addressing numerous com-

mon challenges facing the international community. We have committed to

Millennium Development Goals. Partnering with the United Nations and

strongly supporting its operation in the country, we simultaneously drew

from the varied pool of knowledge, experience and technology of the

United Nations family of nations for the benefit of Armenia.

n In the wake of the new millennium, the UN held a Summit attended by 189 member States during

which the Millennium Declaration was adopted. The States committed themselves to achieving the 8

Millennium Goals retrieved from this Declaration by 2015.

The Republic of Armenia was among these UN member states and its authorities now rely on UN

support while working towards achievement of the nationalized MDGs. The UN and its partners in

Armenia work on implementing the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), which is
