Exclusive Interview with Dr Constantine Dan Mallin, Ontario familyphysician in practice since 1976 and President of Canadian Macedonian

Health Professional Association to get his opinion about Covid -19.

Are you currently working

with patients, or giving themadvises over the phone?

Most family doctors are doingbusiness over the phone orthrough the internet through agovernment program to linkdoctors and patients in a securefashion. People can use videoto show rashes for example. Ihave had patients show metheir sore throats by electronicmeans. It is not as good as inperson but most matters can beresolved that way.I am seeingone or two patients in the officea day, but it is a very slowprocess. People wait in theircars until we call them. We onlylet one person in, at a time. Withour personal protectiveequipment in short supply wehave to keep visits to aminimum and because we haveto disinfect the room after theyleave, well it becomes a slowprocess.Non-essential medicalservices like elective surgeriesare being postponed. Many ofus are taking shifts working atthe local Covid-19 drivethrough screening clinic.Everyone we see has

symptoms. Last week I thinkmost of it was not Covid butthese past few days I believewe are seeing more people withCovid. We can only test aminority of people who comebecause our supplies arelimited. We stress self-isolationwith everyone. I have sent a fewpeople to the EmergencyDepartment but I do not thinkthey were ill enough to beadmitted.

What is your advice how toreduce the spread of Covid19. Is confinement the onlyway?

Confinement of people withsymptoms for a minimum of 14days and social distancing foreveryone else is the onlymethod we have for controllingspread. Avoiding unnecessarytrips, washing your handsproperly and often, usingalcohol gels with at least 60%alcohol on your hands, avoiding touching your face, disinfecting surfaces withalcohol, hydrogen peroxide ordilute bleach products will helpprevent spread. Masks aregood but not fool proof. Gloves

may be helpful but you must usethese with caution and not lettheir use lull you into a falsesense of security.

What is the Capacity at theOntario Hospitals at thistime?

I am in the country (Orangevilleand Grand Valley) so I do nothave direct knowledge of whatis going on in the city. We havea couple of people admittedlocally but no one on aventilator, as far as I know, butthat can change easily. Myunderstanding is that Toronto isnot overwhelmed but thingsmay become more challengingas the numbers increase andput a strain on our limitedresources. We are not there yetand hopefully Public Healthmeasures will flatten the curveand allow us to deal with thiswithout turning into anotherItaly or Spain.

Is there any treatment ormedication that has beenhelping?

There is no known proventreatment or drug prophylaxis

for Covid-19 so I am notprescribing anything for viral-like illness. We can treat otherproblems as usual. What isyour advice for People whoare at some health risk?People with compromisedimmune systems, older peopleand people with cardio-respiratory issues are at higherrisk and especially need tominimize their contact with theoutside world.

What message can you giveto Families with Childrenand Young People, who arestaying at home at this time?

Things about Covid 19 are insuch a state of flux, thatanything said today, can be oldby tomorrowThe advice you can get on linefrom Public Health is sound anduseful. The World HealthOrganization WHO has a veryuseful page on masks andprevention. There is a lot ofadvice online from reputablesources on how to cope withthe stress of this epidemic. Thereis also information on how totalk with your children aboutCovid.

Does this situation remindyou of anything that youexperienced during yourcareer as a MedicalDoctor?

In over 40 years of practice Ihave not experienced anythinglike this. The H1N1 of 2009made a lot of people sick but itdid not overwhelm hospitalslike in New York or Italy. Andwe had a vaccine for it. TheSARS epidemic was verydeadly but very limited. Wemay be living our lives verydifferently for a while until wefind an effective treatment orfind and implement a successfulvaccination program but thatmay take a year or so. Ourworld has changed so quickly. Most people have been verycooperative with self-isolationand social distancing measures. We will learn to cope I am sure.

New Book by Risto Stefov

Canadian-Macedonian author Risto Stefov has published a novel. The book istitled The Alien that Changed the World: Otsir on’sDisappearance. Mr Stefov says that while it is a fictional story it has aMacedonian twist. He hopes it will attract a general non-Macedonian audiencewho are interested in the story and who will indirectly learn about the Macedonian

Risto Stefov

experience.

The main character is a Macedonian who shares his pain with others in similar situations. His familyhad come to Canada from Greece so they could escape the Greek imposed torment and povertyand get ahead in life. Otsiron’s Disappearance also has a neat summary of Macedonian oppressionby Greece. “Well, besides my country being occupied by foreign countries, the part of MacedoniaI come from underwent a lot of changes which were catastrophic for the Macedonian people.

The occupiers first changed our identity and declared that Macedonians didn’t exist. After that theoccupiers changed our names and gave us new names similar to their own. Then they changed thenames of our cities, towns, villages, lakes, rivers, mountains, etc., so that they too sounded like theirown. After that they forced us to learn the occupier’s language and forbade us from speakingMacedonian.

And if that wasn’t enough they excluded us from progress. We couldn’t attend higher education, wecouldn’t rise up in the military or become members of professional organizations. We weren’t evenallowed to build industries. In other words, there was no bright future for the Macedonians in theirown homeland. Our occupiers wanted us to leave and that is exactly what most of us did.”

August, our destiny

The Battle of Chaeronea 338 BC,fought near Chaeronea, in Boeotia, wasthe greatest victory of Philip II ofMacedon against small Hellenic city-states.

The Battle of Chaeronea was fought in 338 BC, near the

city between the forces of Philip of Macedon and an allianceof Hellenic city-states (the principal members of which wereAthens and Theba). The battle was the culmination of Philip’scampaign (339 - 338 BC) and resulted in a decisive victoryfor the Macedonians.

Philip’s message to Sparta: “You areadvised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I willdestroy your farms, slay your people, andiraze your city.”

Later, the Macedonian arms were carried acrossEpirus to the Adriatic Sea.

Alexander was King of Macedonia,Shahanshah of Persia, Pharaoh of Egypt,Hegemon of Hellenic city-istates and Lordof Asia

With a late vote, the rulingSDSM party removed interimLabour and Welfare MinisterRasela Mizrahi from herposition. Mizrahi was removedafter she defiantly refused touse the imposed name “NorthMacedonia” during officialevents.

I am a proud Jewish womanfrom Macedonia, Mizrahi toldthe ruling party from theParliament pulpit, during adebate that had many uglymoments and attacks at her.The first Jewish member of

RaselaMizrahi: “I am a proudJewish woman from Macedonia”

Government in Macedoniafaced an unending torrent ofanti-Semitic abuse from the leftduring her term in office, andher removal puts in doubt theoverall conduct of the elections.

Even before I walked into myoffice, as the first Jewish personin the history of Macedonia tobe appointed to theGovernment, I was the targetof reckless anti-Semiticattacks. Instead of criticizing mywork, I was attacked for myreligion and nationality and

labeled with a yellow star,Mizrahi said in her remarks.

SDSM used a pressconference where Mizrahispoke in front of a banner withthe name Republic ofMacedonia as an excuse todemand her removal. ForeignMinister Nikola Dimitrovclaimed that Greece sent out averbal note demanding thatMizrahi is removed for notusing the imposed name “NorthMacedonia”. Mizrahi repliedthat the banner was left over byCarovska and that she has nointention of putting up a newone.

Her removal comes at a timewhen top SDSM party officialsare also dropping the use ofhated adjective, a move clearlylinked with the comingelections, and interim PrimeMinister Oliver Spasovski whoasked for her removal, usedMacedonia, without theadjective, during his remarks inwhich he demanded thatMizrahi is voted out.

July 10, 2020

I remember meeting HardevSingh for the first time sometimein the summer of 2003 when Iwas writing my book “Historyof the Macedonian PeopleFrom Ancient times to thePresent”. My friend PeteKondoff took me to see himbecause I didn’t know him atthe time but wanted to meethim. I had heard from theCanadian MacedonianHistorical Society that HardevSingh, a Sikh from India, claimed to be a descendant ofthe ancient Macedonians. Morespecifically, he claimed to be adescendant of Alexander theGreats’ wounded Macedoniansoldiers left behind to heal withthe promise that Alexanderwould come back for them buthe never did. Those whosurvived remained behind andintermarried with the localIndian population.

This is what I wrote in myhistory book:

Of the mercenaries and generalpopulation that ventured deepinto India, traces can be foundin the furthest points in southern

India. Some, including women, were recruited by the Tamilrajas. Yavana (Macedonian)women served as bodyguardswithin the palaces while the menserved outdoors as guards. Iwant to mention at this point thatthe Yavanas of India, most ofwhom were the descendants ofMacedonian soldiers andsettlers, in time adopted theBuddhist religion. EvenAlexander himself wasintrigued by the doctrines ofBuddhism and often spentconsiderable time discussing itsmerits and virtues with thenaked Buddhist philosophers. It was not too long after theMacedonian masters openedtheir first schools of sculpting inTaxila that statues of Buddha inYavana (Macedonian) clothingbegan to appear. It is believedthat the colossal statues ofBuddha, in present dayAfghanistan, were built by theancient Macedonian sculptors.

Hardev showed me a book ofthose statues and I can tell youa picture is worth a thousandwords. I saw pictures of thestatues myself.According to

Hardev Singh, even today onecan find traces of the ancientMacedonian character invarious remote places of India. Some still stubbornly cling onto old traditions and refuse togive them up. One can tell thatthey are not pure Indian fromtheir mannerisms, expressions, the way they drink their wine, sing their songs and lament theirdeparted, not to mention theblond hair and green eyes.Hardev believes that the firstMacedonians who becamepermanent residents of Indiawere men who started theirown settlements and marriedlocal women. Because of themixed marriages (mothersbeing non-Macedonian), theMacedonian language wasquickly forgotten but theMacedonian rituals wereperformed by men and werepassed on from generation togeneration. Some of theserituals are very unusual and bearno resemblance to Indiantraditions but are closely relatedto the Yavana of old.

The first century BC broughtprofound change in the political

structure of power fromnorthern India to Egypt. It alsobrought the extinction of thecenturies old Macedonian rulingdynasties. The end ofMacedonian rule did notfacilitate the end of Macedonianculture in these regions. Farfrom it, once established theMacedonians continued to liveon among the nativepopulations permanentlynaturalizing their customs andculture. In India at least, a greatdeal of the original political andadministrative structure, established during ancient times, was adopted by the Indians andsome remain unchanged to thisday. If I may also add, it wasthe early Macedonians rightafter Alexander’s time whointroduced the Indians to theirpresent day calendar, includingthe division of the week intoseven days, one named afterthe sun and one after the moon. The Macedonian civilizationexercised immense prestige notonly in Asia and India but inRome as well. Rome itself wasvery much infatuated withMacedonian art, architecture,

sculpture, etc. that in time it toodeveloped a Macedonianculture. Despite popular beliefto the contrary, theMacedonian language andculture were never extinguishedduring the Roman period. Latinmay have been the officiallanguage of the Roman Empirebut Macedonian Koineremained the internationallanguage of trade andcommerce throughout theworld. Even the three gospelsof Matthew, Mark and Lukewere written not in Latin but inthe Koine language.

After I wrote extensively aboutthe Macedonians in India,Pakistan and Afghanistan, Ireceived an e-mail from theIndian Ministry of Culture andwas told that there were forty-two separate groups of peoplein India that claimed to be thedescendants of Alexander’sMacedonian soldiers. And allthis, thanks to Hardev Singh, areal live person, who convincedme that real live people in Indiatoday believe that Macedoniansdo indeed exist in India.

Another Way to Reunite Village FamiliesBy Victor Bivell

When you start something

it can lead to unexpected

outcomes and that is what

happened to me when I did

the family trees of my four

grandparents. Along the

way I collected the names

and photographs or other

information on about 427

deceased people from our

village and I have now put

these online.

The great majority of these

fellow villagers were born

between the 1860s and

1950s. Many are together

for the first time since they

left the village. In fact

there are more villagers

together online than now

live in our village.

Our village is Neret in

south west Macedonia,

and which since 1912 has

been part of north west

Greece. My father once

told me it had about 3,000

people but nowadays it

has about 250. Like most

Macedonian villages in

Greece it experienced

mass migration and those

who left and their

descendants are now

buried in faraway

cemeteries in Australia,

North America and

numerous European

countries.

I have called the collection

Neret Families as the

photographs are grouped

by extended families. The

photographs are of

headstones and portraits.

Where I only have

certificates and death and

cemetery notices I have

put these online in their

stead.

It can be quite an

experience to go through

so many photographs of

close and distant relatives

and their friends, to see

people where I had

previously only heard

their names, to see people

I never knew had existed,

to see that so many people

in our village were closely

or distantly related or

connected by marriage

and lifelong friendships, to

wonder what life was like

in such a closely knit

community where

everyone knew everyone,

and to see and feel how

history tore that

community apart and sent

it around the world.

There is also a very

practical side to the

collection.

Putting the photographs

together is a way to

remember these people, to

honor them, and to make

available photographs and

information about them to

distant family and friends.

Like me, many people will

see photos of relatives and

their gravestones for the

first time, including those

who lived in faraway

countries.

As well as personal and

emotional value, this can

help to reconnect families

and strengthen family

connections. The initial

over 300 photos in Neret

Families are grouped

under 88 family names. I

know our village had well

over 133 family names so

there is plenty of scope to

add more names and grow

the collection.

At its launch, Neret

Families has the names of

about 732 people. It has

photos of or information

about 427 Neretsi

including spouses from

other villages. In addition,

there is a monument with

the names of 305 people

who died in wars in the first

half of the 20th century.

These 305 people are from

15 villages that comprise

Neret and nearby villages.

The images and

information can be useful

for those doing family

trees – and this is

particularly so for

Macedonians as

documents are often non-

existent, have been lost or

destroyed, are in distant

lands, or are in a foreign

language.

An interesting aspect of

putting Neret Families

together is that I have

found there are distinct

styles of headstones in

different countries.

The Australian headstones

have the most information.

Along with the name, age,

birth and death dates, and

spouse, they typically also

include a photograph,

where they were born –

which makes finding our

village people easy – the

names of children and

grandchildren, and a

message of love and

remembrance.

There is much less

information on the

headstones in Greece and

the United States,

although at this stage my

samples are small. So far,

in the United States, these

typically only have the

name, photo, spouse, and

the birth and death dates;

while in Greece they

typically only have the

name, photo, age and

death date.

The majority of Australian

headstones are written in

the English alphabet but

the words may be

Macedonian or English.

Only a small number are

written in Greek. The

names are usually their

Macedonian names with

some using their English or

Greek equivalent.

For place of birth, the great

majority use the

Macedonian name of the

village, Neret, and only

some have the Greek

name Polipotamo. A

mixture of language

names is not unusual, for

example, Macedonian

words for the text with the

Greek version of the

family name and the

Macedonian name for the

village.

This contrasts with the

headstones in the village,

where everything is in

Greek and there are only

Greek versions of all

names.

In the United States, the

headstones are in English

but the names can be

Macedonian or a mixture,

for example an American

first name and a

Macedonian family name.

There is room for much

more research into

Macedonian headstones

around the world, how and

why these differ in style,

and what they can tell us

about Macedonian

migration. Perhaps more

important is what they

can tell the families and

friends about their loved

ones.

Macedonians have been

migrating around the

world for a long time and

particularly so in the past

120 years. From Australia,

Neret Families has

identified people buried in

Melbourne, Perth,

Manjimup, and Sydney.

From the United States it

has people buried in Fort

Wayne and Ohio. From

Europe it has people in

Macedonia and Romania

as well as the village. But I

know there are Neretsi

buried in many more

countries, and that each

has a story.

Macedonian headstones

have been an under-

utilized resource for

passing on family

information and

Atanas Kirjakov, a candidate running for mayor in Blagoevgradhas been issued a national warrant for his arrest. His case will beheard in Sofia on August 17. As it turns out, the police had beenlooking for him for three years but could not find him. Kirjakov, onthe other hand, had no idea they were looking for him all that timeeven though he openly campaigned for mayor, he openly participatedin public protests and publicly spoke to Blagoevgrad residents aboutimportant issues. Atanas Kirjakov, who was the first candidate to announce hisintentions to run for mayor with aims of removing Rumen Tomov, publicly shared his problems with the judiciary and police on socialmedia. He pointed out that the Ministry of the Interior had an openfile on him as a wanted person from 2017, until he received thesummons three days ago. In that file the authorities had a photographof him and his personal data. “This is about conducting aninterrogation based on a pre-investigation procedure which the 6th

department of the Ministry of the Interior conducted in Sofia”,explained Atanas Kirjakov. “I will be forcibly detained if I fail to comply with the order whichis subject to an administrative penalty under Article 271. I wasalso told that I was a wanted person at state level. Unfortunately,to this day, no one has explained to me or answer to my questionsor given me reasons as to why I am on the list of wanted people bythe state”, said Kirjakov, who has been an “OMO Ilinden” activistfor years. According to Kirjakov, “he is a witness in the case DP 3216/2017as described by Department 6 of - RU – Sofia”. He emphasizedthat he never hid from anyone over the years, he worked legally,he paid his taxes regularly in Blagoevgrad, and last but not least,he has been and still is a loyal citizen of the state.

Byzantine Empire under the Macedonian dynastyThe medieval Byzantine Empire underwent a revival during thereign of the Macedonian emperors of the late 9th, 10th, andearly 11th centuries, when it gained control over the AdriaticSea, Southern Italy, and all of the territory of the Tsar Samuil ofMacedonia.

The cities of the empire expanded, and affluence spread acrossthe provinces because of the newfound security. The populationrose, and production increased, stimulating new demand whilealso helping to encourage trade.

Culturally, there was considerable growth in education andlearning (the “Macedonian Renaissance”). Ancient texts werepreserved and patiently recopied. Byzantine art flourished, andbrilliant mosaics graced the interiors of the many newchurches.[1]

Though the empire was significantly smaller than during thereign of Justinian, it was also stronger, as the remainingterritories were both less geographically dispersed and morepolitically and culturally integrated.

VE^NA VI SLAVA HEROIMacedonians in AlbaniaCondemn Provocation fromthe Bulgarian Academy ofSciencesThe Macedonian Association “Ilinden” - Tirana and theMacedonians from Albania strongly condemn the latestprovocation from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences which refersto the Macedonian language as a “dialect of the Bulgarianlanguage”.

Macedonians are not Bulgarians and the Macedonian language isnot a dialect of the Bulgarian language! The MacedonianAssociation “Ilinden” - Tirana strongly condemns the position ofthe Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, in response to the Declarationon the Macedonian language issued by the Macedonian Academyof Sciences and Arts on December 3rd, and its claims that the“Macedonian language does not exist” and that the “Macedonianlanguage is a dialect of the Bulgarian language”!

With its demands, Bulgaria has confirmed it does not deserve itsplace in the European Union, to which it is an unnecessaryembarrassment. The behavior of Sofia toward the Macedoniansis proof of the nationalist behavior of Bulgarian politics since thedays of 1878 and San Stefano. To make things even more ironic, today Sofia claims to “fight” against the Russian influence inBulgaria, forgetting that bot the state of Bulgaria and San StefanoBulgaria were products of Russia! Macedonians in Albania havealways been Macedonians. Macedonians in Albania will neverbecome Bulgarians!

Exclusive interview for the Macedonian newspaper “Ilinden”: Mr .HalitHabip Oglou, President of the Federation of the Western Thrace Turks inEurope and Vice President of the FUEN

Macedonian newspaper “Ilinden”: Mr . Halit Habip Oglou, please provide a short biography to intr oduce yourself to or readers.

I was born in Greece in 1965.As the child of a familyoriginating from the Turkishcommunity in Western Thrace,I grew up in Germany at anearly age when my familyemigrated to Germany due todeteriorating political andeconomic conditions inWestern Thrace. I’m married,I have three kids, and I am anarchitect as a profession. I havebeen actively involved in civilsociety activities for nearlythirty years and was elected asthe President to the Federationof Western Thrace Turks inEurope (ABTTF) in 1995 andam still currently in that capacity. We met the Federal Union ofEuropean Nationalities(FUEN) in the years when wewere trying to spread the wordregarding discrimination andrights violations against ourTurkish community in WesternThrace at the international level. After joining FUEN in 2007, Iwas elected to the FUENPresidium for the first time in2013, for the second time in2016 and for the third time in2019. During my time as vicepresident in charge ofinternational organizations andFUEN member organizations,I pioneered the establishment ofthe Working Group (TAG) ofTurkic minorities andcommunities at FUEN.

Macedonian newspaper“Ilinden”: It would certainlybe very interesting for ourreaders if you, as thePresident of the Federationof the Western ThraceTurks in Eur ope, coulddescribe the history.

As a result of repression andintimidation policies in Greece,

which began to have an impacton the Turkish community inWestern Thrace in the 1960sand intensified in the 1970s,there has been intensemigration from the region. These policies, which Greeceimplemented against the Turkishcommunity in Western Thrace, were manifested as “melting”and “forced migration”. In thissocial, political, cultural andeconomic pressureenvironment, the majority ofWestern Thrace Turks whowere forced to emigrate fromthe lands where they were bornand raised chose Turkey, whilea significant part preferred otherEuropean countries, especiallyGermany. This is how theprocess of associations ofWestern Thrace Turks began inGermany. Associations, whichwere established in cities whereWestern Thrace Turks hadmigrated, agreed that anumbrella organisation should beorganised to bring aninternational voice against theGreek government whichdenies that the Turkishcommunity in Western Thraceis “Turkish”. To this end,ABTTF was founded inGermany on 28 February1988. Today, with a base ofclose to 30,000 people and 25member associations, ourFederation, which is the voiceof the Western Thrace Turks atthe international level, isheadquartered in Germany.Since 2010, we have arepresentative office inBrussels, we are advocatingrights and lobbying with theCouncil of Europe, UnitedNations, OSCE, EuropeanUnion, and we havecollaborated with non-

governmental organizationsoperating at the internationallevel. We have been activelyworking for over thirty years.

Macedonian newspaper“Ilinden”: Mr . President, what are the main problemsminorities facing in thedifferent Balkanscountries?

As a result of the FrenchRevolution, growing ideas ofnationalism brought the BalkanWars, borders were drawn inthe Balkans. During the FirstWorld War, which eruptedfollowing the Balkan Wars, much blood was spilled on theBalkan front. During theinterwar period and followingthe Second World War,Socialist Yugoslavia wasfounded. The problems, whichwere frozen for many yearsduring the Cold War, wereagain ignited in the Balkans withthe disintegration of the SovietUnion. There has been greatsuffering in the blood-soakedBalkans. For 100 years, due toethnic tensions and conflict inthe Balkans, the priority wasensuring peace and stability.Democracy was establishedtoo late in this region; newdemocracies were builttowards the 2000s. Whiledemocracy had no opportunityto develop, the currentproblems in the Balkansremained present. The long-standing name issue betweenMacedonia and my country,Greece, has only been recentlyresolved. All states in theBalkans are complex in termsof minorities, including theformer Yugoslav Republics.One-third of Serbia’spopulation is composed of non-

Serbs. Following theirhomeland Croatia, Croats livemost extensively in Bosnia andHerzegovina. Following theMacedonians, the largest ethnicgroup in Macedonia are theAlbanians and there are alsoTurks along with othernumerous minorities living in thecountry. In Kosovo,Macedonia and Bosnia andHerzegovina, minorities areconsidered constituentelements of the state. However,it is impossible to say the samething as for Albania, Serbia andCroatia. Minorities, especiallyTurks, do not officially haveminority status in Bulgaria. InGreece, Western Thrace Turksare known not as Turks but asa Muslim minority, and as suchMacedonians, Vlachs andChams are not recognizedeither. In such a multinationalgeography, many minorities livein each country. As a result, nocountry in the Balkans trustseach other, and also mistrustsminorities in the country. Therefore, the main problem islack of trust. Trust must beestablished both betweencountries and between thegovernment and minorities in itscountry. For minorities, it mustbe the government, the state, which builds trust. For this, there must be an equal level ofdialogue. Policies which areimposing and disregardingminorities should not beimplemented.

Macedonian newspaper“Ilinden”: Greece andBulgaria have negated theminorities in their countriesfor years including theMacedonian minority. Doesthe Federal Union ofEuropean Nationalities

(FUEN) have plans tointervene on behalf of theminorities in the EUcountries Bulgaria andGreece to get the minoritieslegally recognized andaccepted and to make surethat their fundamentalhuman rights in accordanceto the European minoritylegislation are respected?

FUEN aims to create EU-levelprotection and support toolsand mechanisms for nationaland linguistic minorities living inEurope through the EuropeanCitizens’ Initiative, titled“Minority Safe Pack”. Thanksto this package, minorities willbe supported at the EU leveland they will survive, maintaintheir identity and culture andaccess programmes and toolsin order to stand up againstassimilations. A total of1,215,789 signatures werecollected throughout Europe in2018 at the end of a year-longsigning process. This initiativeis a significant gain for nationaland linguistic minorities living inEurope. Furthermore, it is ofutmost importance to stressthat there are also MEPs whowill work for this to beimplemented by the EU. Assuch, our FUEN PresidentLorant Vincze, who is part ofthe Democratic Alliance ofHungarians in Romania (whichis a member of FUEN) waselected as an MEP in 2019.Now, as FUEN, we will workwith all our strength inimplementing the provisions weare calling for by the EU’slegislative bodies.

Albania can, through Federal Union of EuropeanNationalities (FUEN), internationalize the issue of law andits weaknesses in order to attract attention frominternational organizations that cover issues related tominorities and human rights?

FUEN is the largest umbrella organisation that brings togethernational minorities living in Europe. Its foundation goes back tothe year the Council of Europe was founded in 1949. In 2019, itcelebrated its 70th anniversary and FUEN is a big family. As therepresentative of this family, FUEN aims to create a protectionmechanism that will encompass all national minorities in Europe. At the same time, it attaches importance to the problems of itsmember minorities and demonstrates its attitude towards suddenevents through press releases and other media outlets. Throughprojects, it organizes activities to promote stability and dialoguein the Balkans and the Caucasus, allowing all minorities in thatregion to represent and speak out. The resolutions submitted bymembers at the congresses send these decisions to the relevantgovernments and international organisations, transmitting thedemands of minorities. Within FUEN, it gives trainings to non-governmental organizations on different subjects with the slogan“Build Yourself!” in order to improve the capacities of minorities. In addition, with respect to the working groups within FUEN,member organizations can have the opportunity to establish closercooperation with other organizations that are experiencing similarissues. Solidarity is of paramount importance at FUEN. At thispoint, each minority organization has experience in different fieldsand is ready to share it with another group that needs it. Forexample, there are many organizations with lobbying experience, and other organizations that want to benefit from this experience. They will be definitely helped if they make any requests. In thissense, FUEN is a pool of cooperation and solidarity that eliminatesgeographical boundaries.

Macedonian newspaper “Ilinden”: What is your messageto the minorities in Balkan und Europe?

My message to minorities in the Balkans is: ‘It is not enough to beright; it is necessary to fight to take your rights. And this is onlypossible through unity and solidarity’. As for the minorities inEurope, it is necessary to divide the entire European geographyinto north and south. Indeed, minorities living in northern Europehave left wars long ago, they have a wide array of minority rightsand live in countries which are mature democracies. However, itis impossible to say the same for the south of Europe. As in theBalkans, minority rights are often taboo in these countries. Manyhave younger democracies than in the north, have more limitedrights in terms of minorities, and dialogue mechanisms are eitherproblematic or inexistent. Under these circumstances, at FUEN,minorities which are advanced in terms of rights can pass on theirstories, experiences and models they build in their own country tominorities who are not in the same situation. This is a greatopportunity for mutual learning to gain experience. FUEN is animportant platform to take advantage of this opportunity and Iwould suggest to them not to hesitate to use this opportunity.

Macedonian newspaper “Ilinden”: Thank you for theinterview, on behalf of the Macedonians in Albania. Ithank you for your cooperation and I wish you personaland professional successes.

Recreational cannabis waslegalized in Canada on October 17,2018 by the Federal GovernmentCanada joined Uruguay as thesecond country in the world tolegalize cannabis for adult use.In Ontario you must be 19 and olderto buy recreational cannabis. In regard of this, Canadians forChildren at Health Risk, registeredcharitable organization inparticipation with Association ofMacedonian Students at theUniversity of Toronto, presenteda workshop: Learn the HealthEffects of Cannabis for Youth, toraise awareness and learn moreabout the new Cannabis Act andits health effects. This importanttopic was meant to educate youthand young adults to stay safe andprevent the potential health risksif they use cannabis and to advisethem how to use it responsibly.I’m talking to MD BojanaJordanovski who facilitated thisWorkshop and sharing some of thefacts and advises for Youth andParents.1. What is Cannabis?Cannabis street name (marijuana, pot, weed, bud, green, ganja, herbor flower).Cannabis is a product of Cannabissativa plant that is used for itspsychoactive and therapeuticeffects. It comes in many forms, including as dried flowers andleaves; hash; extracts, such as oil (e.g., honey oil, phoenix tears)shatter; and cannabis infusesedibles like (candies, butter orbaked goods). The main active chemical inmarijuana, also present in otherforms of cannabis is THC. It ispsychoactive substance and is themost responsible for the “high”associated with cannabis use. Thedegree of psycho activity can bedetermined by the quantity of THCin the product. Another activechemical is CBD, which is beingstudied and used for medicalpurposes.2. What are the health effects andrisks of cannabis for Youth?

How cannabis affects youthdepends on many factors, such as:How much, how often and howlong is used? Is cannabis smoked, vaped or ingested? Is it used alone and/or incombination with othersubstances or alcohol?Cannabis is an addictivesubstance. Regular and prolongeduse of cannabis causepsychological and/or physicaldependence. The rate of cannabisuse is two times higher amongCanadian youth aged 15-24 as it isfor adults. The best way to protecthealth is to not use cannabis.Youth are more likely to experienceharm because their brain is stilldeveloping. The pre-frontal cortex, the part of the brain that controlsreasoning and impulses, does notfully mature until around the ageof 25. This can have a noticeableeffect on the young adultbehaviour, such as: difficultyholding back or controllingemotions; a preference for high-excitement and low-effort activities;poor planing and judgement; morerisky, impulsive behaviours, including experimenting withdrugs and alcohol. The physical effects of cannabismay include: red eyes, dry mouthand throat, irritated respiratorysystem, increase in appetite andheart rate, decreases in bloodpressure, balance and stability, drowsiness or restlessnessdepending on the amount takenand individual response to thedrug.Cannabis impairs concentration, attention, impairs co-ordinationand slows reaction time.Youth may have problems payingattention, remembering or learningthings, and making decisions afterusing cannabis.Cannabis affects mood andfeelings, can make youth one feelvery anxious, panicked, sad andfearful.Continuous, regular use over timeaffects mental health and may leadto addiction with major negativeimpacts on everyday life, schoolperformance, and relationship withfamily and friends.3. What are the ways to reducerisks and harms when using?Cannabis use is now legal foradults, but it does have health risks. The only way to avoid risks is bychoosing not to use cannabis. If isused non-medicinally, youth canmake informed choices for safer usesuch as:- Delay cannabis use as late aspossible in life, ideally not beforeadulthood.- Choose low potency products -those with low THC and high CBDcontent.- Stay away from syntheticcannabis products such as K2,Spice that are often sold as legalalternatives to cannabis.- Use cannabis in the ways thatdon’t involve smoking. Chooseless risky methods like vamping or

ingesting. If you do smoke avoiddeep inhalation or breath holding.- Occasional use is better thanregular use.- Cannabis use impairs ability todrive a car or operate a machinery.Wait at least 6 hours or more afterusing. Plan for transportationbefore using.- Do not use alcohol and/or othersubstances when using cannabis.- Avoid using if pregnant, or if youor family members have a historyof psychosis or substance useproblems.4. What parents need to know andhow to talk to Youth aboutcannabis? The reasons why young peopleuse or do not use cannabis iscomplex. There is no single reason. The individual and/or socialfactors influence cannabis useamong young people. Enjoymentand relaxation have been cited asprimary factors for continuous useof recreational cannabis.Experimentation and curiosity aresignificant factors influencing firsttime users. Reliving stress, anxiety, coping with emotions, socialsituations and other types of stressas well are all factors influencingcannabis use.As parents, providing our childrenwith balanced information abouteffects associated with cannabiscanhelp them make informeddecisions. Building closerelationships, setting a clearexpectations, consistentdiscipline and addressing issuesearly and often are protectingfactors. Important for parents is togaininsight into the different pressures, expressing concern, support, andstaying patient.Additional resources for parents:drugfreekidscanada.org/drug-info/cannabisCAMH websiteEuropean Monitoring Centre forDrugs and Drug Addiction -“Synthetic Cannabinoids andSpice”National Cannabis Prevention andInformation Centre - “SyntheticCannabinoids”www.ontario.ca - Mental healthand Addiction SupportDrug and Addiction helpline - Tollfree 1-800 -656 -8603Mental health helpline - Toll free 1-866 -531-2600Good2talk -confidential helplinefor postsecondary students1-866-925-5454, Canadians for Children ath e a l t h R i s k -www.childrenathealthrisk.comInterview by: Zolen Georgievska

Prepared byVida Savino

Creamy Green Pea Soup300 gr green peas

500 gr water + 2 cubes boullion (or chicken, or vegetable stock)

1 large onion finely chopped

1 clove of garlic, minced

parsley finely chopped

1 tablespoon butter

100 gr heavy cream

salt, pepper

In a medium pot melt the butter and saute the onions until translucent.

Add the garlic and the green peas and cook for 5 minutes.(If the peasare frozen, cook them for 3 minutes longer). After everything issoftened a little bit, add the water and when the water is hot dissolvethe bouillon cubes (or just add the stock).

Cook everything for 10-15 minutes until the peas are soft, but notmushy. Now this part is optional: you can roughly smash the peas witha mush potatoes tool for more textured soup, blend the half withblender for soup with whole peas, or like me blend everything untilvery smooth. After blending for your liking, add the heavy cream andthe parsley (you can use other spices also like thyme, mint...). Garnishwith croutons, parsley or whatever you like.

TULUMBA

Tulumba is a one of the best dessert in the world. Simple andsweet, there isn’t a human being that can resist the irresistibletaste of the sweet dough covered with syrup (sherbet). Tulumbaoriginates in Turkey and it’s mostly found in all cuisines of theformer Ottoman Empire. It is one of the most popular dessertsin Macedonia. There are many recipes for tulumba, some ofthem are good, some of them are awesome, but the bestrecipes are kept a secret and there is a great truth when it’s saidthat if you want to try good tulumba, visit a specialized pastryshop. This recipe is the closest I could get to make a tulumbajust like from a pastry shop. Follow the instructions carefully.

Ingredients:

• 2 cups water • 2 tbs of unsalted butter

• 3 eggs • 2.5 cups flour

• 3 tbs semolina • 1 tbs of corn starch

For the syrup

• 2 cups water • 3 cups sugar

• 1 tbs lemon juice 1 cup is 250ml cup

Preparation:

Syrup

1. Put water and sugar in a pot over medium heat

2. When syrup starts to boil, add lemon juice and turn ofthe heat.

Dough

1. Add water in a pot and put on fire.

2. Add butter in the hot water and let it melt. Add flourand stir with wire on medium heat

3. When mixture becomes soft and non-sticky, transfer toanother bowl so it will cool down faster.

4. Put cooled dough in a mixing bowl and start to mix witha mixer. Add semolina and starch.

5. Then start to add eggs gradually, one by one. Mix welluntil mixture becomes smooth.

6. Fill your piping bag or tulumba syringe with themixture.

7. Pipe the dough and cut with an oiled knife or scissorsdirectly in the cooking oil which shouldn’t be put onfire, turn on the hotplate after you add tulumbas in theoil.

8. When they are fully fried, take tulumbas out anddirectly transfer into the cold syrup Leave 2-3 minutes, then transfer tulumbas to a plate.

9. If you prepare larger quantities, first cool down the oilfor frying, then repeat the procedure.

10.Pour the rest of the syrup over the ready tulumbas.
