AKADEMIE Mathematics and Physical Science Camp!

Selvino Mosaola

Zig Ziglar once said: “You don‟t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

The grade 11 and 12 Mathematics and Science learners truly proved this statement to be accurate.

On Friday, the 17th and Saturday, the18th of January our teachers as well as our grade 11 – 12

learners were ready and full of energy for Mathematics and Physical Science classes. Our hardworking Mathematics teachers,

Mrs Jolliffe and Mrs Nel sacrificed their weekend to be at school for the

Mathematic camp alongside our beloved teacher, Mr Bezuidenhout with the Physical Sciences.

One of the learners who attended, Keletso Sekere, was asked about her experience and this is what

she had to say: “It was an amazing opportunity. We really learned a lot and we hope we‟ll have more

camps like this in the near future”.

It is clear that our learners are enjoying these camps and we would like to thank our teachers

for their hard work, sacrifice and contribution to our learners‟ success. The level of effort you put into

your work, will determine your level of success.

Daar is net „n paar waarvan ek hou. Die ontgroening was eintlik lekker. “The orientation was okay. I enjoyed the dance session we had in the hall. The thing I like most about the school is seeing my friends because they make school fun. My favourite teacher at the school is Mrs Wolmarans.” “The orientation was good especially the dance activity in the hall. Most activities were enjoyable alt-

hough the orientation was not what I expected.”

Bloemies shine in public speaking Andile Mlangeni

On the 20th of February a public speaking competition was held at Bloemfontein High School. Several

schools participated such as Brebner, Saint Michael‟s, HTS Louis Botha and Saint Andrews, amongst oth-ers. For the juniors our very own Andile Mlangeni in 9 E1 came third, second position was taken by a girl form Saint Michael‟s and the first position was won by our very own Kay-Lee Jardim in 9 E1. The competition was nerve-wracking, but when we stood on the podium the nervesness disappeared and we got what we went there for. At the end of the day everyone enjoyed it.

Wees dié reënboog in iemand se wolk.

Icebergs are large pieces of ice found floating in the open ocean. What you can see from the surface can be mis-

leading. Most of the iceberg is hidden below the water. This is how anger works. Often when we are angry, there

are other emotions hidden under the surface. Anger is a secondary emotion seen as the tip of the iceberg.

Conflict is a natural thing, even if we do not like it, it is going to happen. Why? People‟s needs and wants differ

therefore there is conflict. The question remains “How do I learn to deal with conflict?”

Let us use the think, feel, do triangle. Constant information is sent to my brain from the world that creates

thoughts, feelings and behaviours. For example if I see a puppy and love dogs I will feel happy and want to pat

the dog. If I am scared of dogs, I will feel fear and run away. We react in three basic ways; we fight, freeze or

flee. Do we ever think why we lose control of our emotions? Why do

we have BIG reactions to little problems? This is how our brains func-

tions. We have an upstairs brain, a midbrain and a downstairs brain.

My downstairs brain/brainstem is the part that will react automatically,

when I am in danger I fight, flee or freeze without even thinking about

it. My emotions and memories are created and stored in my midbrain.

Then our upstairs brain is our cerebral cortex where we reason and

think. This is where we can come to logical solutions. The challenge is

for my midbrain and upstairs brain to communicate with each other so

that my behaviour can change. We need insight in destructive behav-

ioural patterns and what it does to other people. “Seek first to under-

stand and then to be understood”.

Anger management and conflict resolution does not come naturally; it

is something to be learned. If a child has grown up where conflict is

dealt with in violent ways this is how they see and learn to deal with

conflict. Children learn from what they see for example: parents,

social media and watching television. These are but a few examples of

what anger/conflict is and how it influences our daily lives.

TEACHERS NEWS

On the 15th of January this year, the school welcomed 4 new teachers. One of the teachers is Mrs Rheeder. She teaches

English Home Language and Life Orientation.

Mrs Rheeder said that Bloemfontein High School teachers are welcoming, kind

and very hardworking. She also went on to mention that she has indeed made new

friends amongst the teachers. A fun fact about her is that she lived in South Korea.

To all the Bloemies, Mrs Rheeder says, “The harshest person you‟ll ever face is

the one staring back at you in the mirror.”

Cordial welcome to Mr Fouché By Reamogetse Tshelance

New Year, new you, new experiences and guess what? A new teacher. Welcome to Mr Fouché, the

new Mathematics teacher. He has nothing, but pleasant things to say about our school.

Mr Fouché says that he is mind-boggled by the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff members.

He is appreciative of them for their hearty welcome. He is amazed by how he has already begun

building beautiful friendships with some of the staff. He is overjoyed that his first teaching experi-

ence is filled with friendly, helpful and welcoming staff members.

He is impressed with Bloemies because people from all walks of

life work harmoniously in one school. He couldn‟t be prouder to be

part of this institution. Mr Fouché says Bloemfontien High School

is an exceptional school and he wants all the students to keep being

themselves and chasing their dreams.

Mr Fouché, welcome to our school. We are humbled and honoured

to have you as a member of the Bloemies family. May your time at

Bloemfontien High School be blessed.

Welkom terug, Bloemie!

Juffrou Hugo leer ons RTT.

Adriaan Viljoen

Haar ander vak waarin sy spesialiseer is IT.

Me Kieser’s bundle of joy!

Our little miracle was born on 8 January. It was rainy, which is my favourite kind of day. I joked and said he

was in a hurry to see our 2019 matric results. His name is Jonathan Henry Kieser. He is named after my father-

in- law, John Hendrik Kieser. We also chose his first name because it means "Gift from God" and that is what he

is. He looks like his dad and some say his great- grandfather. He will be a proud Bloemie in 2034. Even though

I am a mommy now, I still miss my Bloemie children. Didn't think my heart could get any bigger. Good luck for

the year and term. See you guys in May.

SOCIAL Editorial Letter

A new year, a new era and a fresh start. Welcome to the grade 8‟s of 2020. To the matrics, let us keep the Bloemie mantra going “Strewe altyd hoër”! The value we will be focusing on this term is responsibility. As we celebrate 20 years of grace, let us pledge to not only be responsible for our actions, but also for our environment. I encourage each and every one of you to make responsibility a habit and not an act. Let us run this race to the best of our ability as we start 2020 on a high note. We, as the Wick editorial staff, wish you

A Letter of Gratitude

Retshepile Likhoele

In most cases people like to appreciate the art, but not the artist. However, this is not the case with the Wick. We would like to thank the creative genius behind our new Wick logo, Mrs van Heerden. Thank you for depicting what words cannot express.

As the Wick, we also celebrate 20 years of writing and informing the school about current events. We thank everyone who has helped to make this newspaper great. Your efforts are highly appreciated.

Jesus is King

This year will be an exciting year for Bloemfontein High School. Not only are we celebrating 20 years of grace but, we also welcome Me Francis as the new co-ordinator of JIK. Me Francis‟ dream for JIK is to spread the word of our Lord and Saviour and to launch new programmes in the school, so that every teenager could have a safe space. JIK has also collaborated with Doxa Deo who have been gracing us with their presence every Wednesday during break. They provide us with great worship. On the 27

th of February, Me Francis hosted the annual JIK even-

ing. The night started at 18:00 with an awesome band from Doxa Deo. Also from Doxa Deo were Brent & Tumi who delivered the word. A dance group surprised us with their song “All I do is win.” Hot dogs and refreshing cool drinks were served as well. It was truly an inspiring experience! Thank you to Me Francis for her dedication to our school, Mr Connoway for providing the food and transport and to Doxa Deo for the awesome worship.

Hierdie wedstryd is „n sterk

2020 baie sterk is. Baie geluk aan die eerste span! Ons

Netbal vat weer vlam! Megan Geduldt

Wees

gewaarsku: Die Bloemie Bom maak plat!
