The most famous wartime message carrier was called Pheidippides.

He is said to have run 26 miles from a battlefield at Marathon in full armour, to tell the king and the people of Athens that their army had won.

SAMPLE SLIDEwww.ks1resources.co.uk

Pheidippedes had run almost 200 miles in two days carrying urgent messages for the army.

Inspite of his heroic efforts, when the battle was over and he arrived in Athens with news of their victory, poor Pheidippedes dropped dead from exhaustion!

More than 100 years ago a special Olympic Stadium was built in Athens, Greece. It was built for the 1896 Olympic Games.

It was intended to look like like the ancient stadium that had been built there almost 2000 years before. That stadium was Olympia.

SAMPLE SLIDEwww.ks1resources.co.uk

Long, long ago, men from all over Greece came to Olympia to compete in a great athletics festival in honour of the god Zeus. The games happened once every four years and became known as the Olympic Games because they were held in Olympia.

In 1895, a Frenchman called Baron Pierre de Coubertin got together with other important people and they decided it was time the Olympic Games began again.

So, they travelled to Greece to persuade the Greeks to hold the games in Athens where they had been held long ago.

They also decided that since the games would be held in Greece, they should organise a marathon in honour of the Greek soldier Pheidippides.

SAMPLE SLIDEwww.ks1resources.co.uk

When the modern Olympic Games began in Greece in1896, the marathon became an Olympic event.

The winner of the first modern Olympic marathon event was a Greek postal worker called Spiridon Louis. The Greek crowd made him their hero because he was the only Greek to win any of the track and field events.

Twelve years later, the Italian, Dorando Pietri was in first place as he staggered towards the finishing line of the 1908 London Olympic marathon.

He was so exhausted that he fell over many times and, as the second placed man got nearer and nearer, officials helped him over the line to win.

But, because the officials had helped him over the line, the exhausted Dorando Pietri was disqualified and the second placed man, Johnny Hayes, was declared the winner and awarded the gold medal.

But that wasn’t the end of Dorando Pietri’s story………..

Queen Alexandra, who had been watching the marathon, was so impressed by his heroic efforts to finish the race that, the very next day, she presented him with a silver

cup.

From that day on he became a hero. Not because he’d lost his first place, but because he didn’t give up.
