Dr.Cawood attended theUniversity of Ken-tucky and received hismedical degree fromthe University of Lou-isville in 1946. Hecompleted his radiol-ogy residency atJohns Hopkins Uni-versity. During WorldWar II, Dr. Cawoodserved in the ArmyMedical Corps inPasadena, Californiaand aboard a medicalhospital ship in theSouth Pacific. In 1958he moved to Ashland,KY where he re-mained for the rest ofhis career. Dr. Ca-wood was dedicatedto improving healthcare for the people ofKentucky. He workedtirelessly on the stateCertificate of Needand Licensure Board,served as president ofthe Kentucky chapterof the American Col-lege of Radiology, andpresident of the medi-cal staffs of KingsDaughters MedicalCenter and Our Ladyof Bellefonte Hospitalin Ashland. Dr. Ca-wood served aschairman of the boardof the Ken tuckyMedical Associationand was electedpresident in 1969. Hisprofessional careerwill be rememberedfor his guidance to themany students of theKings DaughtersMedical Center Radio-logic TechnologySchool as well as hiscompassion and gen-erosity to patientswho could not affordmedical care. He waspreceded in death byhis wife of 55 years,Virginia Shannon Ca-wood. GENTRYLoyd, who trainedGraustark, KauaiKing and ProudClarion, the 1967Kentucky Derby win-ner who held one ofthe race's fastesttimes, died July 1,2012 in Lexington,KY of heart failure.He was 87 and livedin Stuart, FL and Lex-ington, KY. Gentrywas born in Coving-ton, KY, on Jan 19,1925 and earned thenickname Boo in earlychildhood while hang-ing onto the trousersof his father and uncleOlin. He grew up inVersailles, IN on hisgrandmother's farm,attending school dur-ing the winter monthsand joining his par-ents on the racetrackduring the summer.He came into thor-oughbred horse rac-ing naturally. His fa-ther twice rode in theKentucky Derby as ajockey before turningto training and wasNorth America's lead-ing trainer in 1929.His uncle, Olin Gen-try, managed Col.E.R. Bradley's farmand was instrumentalin breeding 188 stakeswinners, twentychampions, and nineclassic winners, in-cluding six KentuckyDerby winners. LoydGentry's thorough-bred training careerspanned six decadesand linked him toracing's most presti-gious names andstables. In the 1950s,he was head trainerfor Captain Harry F.Guggenheim's CainHoy Stable. TheGuggenheim yearswere filled with fan-fare, owing to thecaptain's great wealthand political power.During a nine day pe-riod in 1955, Gentrywon the Blue GrassStakes at Keenelandwith Racing Fool, theDerby Trial Stakeswith Flying Fury, theKentucky Oaks withLalun, and ran fourthin the Ken tuckyDerby with RacingFool. Despite thesewins, Gentry missedbeing at the center ofracing activity andeventually returned toCentral Kentucky. Hisrecord speaks for it-self. He won the Prin-cess Pat in 1960 withRose Bower at Arling-ton Park and the im-portant MatronStakes at BelmontPark. He ran in theKentucky Oaks threetimes, winning twicewith Lalun in 1955and Hail to Patsy in1969, and runningsecond in 1971 withHimalaya. His train-ees, Umbrella Fellaand Royal Gunnerwon a number of twoyear old races, finishing2-3 in the Arlington-Washington Futurityin 1966 for MikeFord. KauaiKing later went on towin the KentuckyDerby and the Preak-ness in 1966. Perhapsthe fastest and bestknown horse Gentrytrained was Graustark,who was undefeateduntil his last race andwhose popularity waslegendary in the me-dia and with fanswherever Graustarkwent. Until his death,Gentry continued tobreed and train thor-oughbreds in the rac-ing mecca that is ahallmark of CentralKentucky.
