DESIGN PRINCIPLES
‐ SPACES TO ALLOW FOR NON‐STRUCTURED, MULTIPLE AND FLOOR LEVEL USE.

‐ BUILD IN CONTEXT (SITE, MATERIAL, CLIMATE AND USER SPECIFIC)
The kindergarten as it had been for a decade in huts in the midst of large trees
‐Spaces radiating out of a central hall‐ circulation minimized and open / built spaces knitted together with pergolas and courts‐ personalized play areas for each age group
‐Foundation in rammed earth
‐ plinth beams integrated into the brick work; no shuttering
CEB brick for walling with stabilized earth mortar with earth excavated on site –embodied energy 478 MJ/m3‐ and only 46.8 kgCo2/m2
‐Pre‐fab RCC rafters with ferro‐cement connector nodes
‐ tie beam designed as integrated rain gutters / window over hangs / window seats
‐IPS flooring‐ walls left natural ‐ all RCC elements in colors that follow the sun path ‐ benches and sill slabs in pre‐fab RCC waxed
All outdoor paths / paving / play area in CEB
‐all outdoor areas shaded with trees / pergolas
‐ indigenous tropical dry evergreen plants / ground cover / trees
‐ every class room attached to a vegetable grown patch for children to experiment with
rainwater harvesting
‐ Building of swales, ponds and percolation pits‐ Check dams in erosion canyons‐ Rehabilitation, building of tanks and water bodies
