2-pounder and 37-mm Myth - No High Explosive ShellMore than one author has stated that the 37-mm used by USA tanks and British 40-mm were poor because they "had no high explosive shell." Some even make it seem like canister shot was the only round issued to 37-mm guns besides armor piercing.Actually, the issue was that high explosive shells of their caliber were too small to be used for general long range fire and could not compare to the HE shell of a 75-mm (for example). 40-mm high explosive shells were actually common (though maybe not issued for the 2-pounder), such as those used by the million in the Bofors 40-mm AA gun.The USA did issue high explosive 37-mm shells, mainly for point fire targets. When used with precision fire they could knock down wooden pillars in bunkers and (with good shooting) collapse them. They weren't 75 but they could be used for shooting at machine guns or other targets beyond the range of canister shot.
