A PERSONAL REFLECTION
ON THE CONFERENCE
“This conference has meant a great deal to me
over the years. It has had a huge influence on my
practice of pediatrics as well as my own spiritual
growth. The concept of whole person healing
was pretty new when I started coming to M&M;
now it’s not that unique but fresh ideas from
speakers and discussions with participants have
provided even greater insights every conference.
Also it has offered me an opportunity to visit with
clergy and spouses to communicate about
common problems and successes in our ministries.
I look forward every year to this retreat or more
accurately, each “advance” in the mountains.

41TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS, CLERGY & THEIR SPOUSES/SIGNIFICANT OTHERS
HEALTH OF THE WHOLE PERSON — mind, body and spirit — is the focus of Medicine and Ministry, a concept introduced in the 1940s by Swiss physician/theologian Paul Tournier. For the last 40 yearsthis conference has worked to keep his healing principlesvital and relevant by choosing speakers from the healing professions who help conferees explore common issues of spiritual and physical healing.
HEALING of the whole person involves the attitude of the healer. Our purpose is to develop and nurture this understanding in the lives and work of the clergy and healthcare providers who participate in the conferences. We also believe that spouses/partners, lay or professional, should be recognized as full partners in the healing team, and that they are integral in every aspect of the conference. (To make that easier in some cases, arrangements can be made for child care and scholarships.)
THE FOUNDATION of Tournier’s thinking — and our efforts — has sound ancient roots: Socrates said, “You ought not attempt to cure eyes without head or head without body, so you should not treat body without soul.” Plato noted that the part can never be well until the whole is well. Jesus Christ said, following a healing incident, “Your faith has made you whole.”
So we, more than two thousand years after Jesus, carry on the tradition of bringing together each year a group of active, vital healers and spouses, in a conference where ideas and seeds are planted, professional questions and concerns are discussed, and minds are stimulated. There is also
time for reflection and recreation, music (conferees with musical talents are encouraged to share them), and forging friendships. Please join us this year!
