The following changes will be made to the 2017-18 school calendar: Add October 16, originally scheduled as a teacher duty day/student holiday, as a student day and the last

day of the grading period Cancel three early release days and use that time for instruction: December 6, 13 and 20

Happy Fall! First Graders are learning at full speed! Homework is being sent home every Monday and is expected to be returned on Friday. Part of their homework is to read nightly, fill out the reading log and write a sentence. They also need to be studying their spelling words for their spelling test on Friday. Don't forget the work on the back of the weekly teacher note and any other math worksheets that may come home as well. Please help your child memorize their sight words from the list that was sent home for

them in their folders. Practicing with your child is a great way to promote a lifelong love for reading and learning. There are many ways to make this time with your child a fun, positive experience. For example, take turns reading in silly voices, pretend to be the charac-ters in the story, and have follow up discussions about the story. Other ways to get your child excited about learning can include using shaving cream to spell out spelling/sight words on a table or plate, using a bar of soap to write their words on a mirror, and alphabet cereal can be used for a tasty treat. When you are at a stoplight ask your child how many sounds are in a particular word, have them blend sounds to make words, substitute different beginning, middle and end sounds to create new words, practice rhyming. Math can be fun by using beans or candies to count and practice addition/subtraction facts. Students will be more apt to put forth a bit more ef-fort if they know their parents will be checking their progress. We would like to again encourage all parents and families to keep with the attendance initiative. Please get your child to school on time. Our goal is for them to be at school on time, to stay in school until dismissal and to not miss any days from school unless of an illness or family emergency. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents and families for joining us for Horizon's annual Open House. We had a great turnout and truly appreciate your support! Thanks again! The First Grade Team

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for joining us for Horizon’s annual Open House. We had an awesome turnout and truly appreciate your support. As we are finishing up the first grading period, we would like to emphasize the importance of nightly reading. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to spend time together while helping them to develop a love for reading.

Our second grade curriculum is progressing quickly. We are reviewing long and short vowel sounds and gearing up to read chapter books. In Math we are working on different addition/subtraction strategies, working on standard units of measure-ment and ways to compare them. In Science we are beginning to examine rocks and soil.

Please continue reviewing with your child. Students will be more apt to put forth a bit more effort if they know their parents will be checking their progress.

The Second Grade Team

Third grade would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents and students for joining us at our Open House. We love your Support! Our classes are off to an awesome start! It is important that our students are reading daily at home. Currently, we are reading many wonderful stories to enhance the learning process in reading. We are studying main idea and details, and text features. Always remember to ask your child questions about what they are reading and to locate specific information in the passage they’ve read.

Our Math lessons are quickly progressing. We have been multiplying and introducing division. In addition the students are finding the area and perimeter around polygons We are beginning rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand and ten thousand digits. We are starting our instruction in multiplication facts, so please start reviewing those with your child. Next, we will move on to informative essays. As you can see we are off to a busy start to the year. We don’t let any grass grow under our feet in Fifth Grade.

Ms. Ellis & Ms. Kent

PAGE 9 HORIZON HAPPENINGS

Ms. Potash and Ms. Ramsey's students have been working to get their art projects in gear after being interrupted by hurricane Irma! Their hard work has certainly paid off. Beautifully finished works of art are slowly but surely being produced by our horizon ea-

gle artists. Our art clubs also had to be put on hold but the sign up sheets are coming, we promise! We're back on track and ready for creativity!

- Ms. Potash and Ms. Ramsey

September was a difficult month. We had the start of the school year running smoothly and then…Irma decided to make an unwelcome visit. Things have cleared up and we continue the process of getting some normalcy back into our lives. We continue to look for the Leaders in our classes each day, and we are proud to say that there are many students stepping up and becoming a leader in PE. Being a leader in PE does not always mean being the fastest run-ner, the highest jumper or the farthest thrower. Leadership in PE means that you are willing to lead by example. When others around you are doing other things, a leader is doing what the PE teacher asks, does it the first time and

does not complain about the task that they are doing. Our students have been demonstrating great examples of what it means to be a leader at PE. A leader at PE wears the right clothes and shoes (tennis shoes or sneakers) every time to PE. They do not rely on their teacher to remind them to dress appropriately; they dress that way because that is what a leader would do. We all understand the Top Ten Essentials for Horizon and we want to continue that practice during their Physical Education classes.

Coach Apgar will be working on some skills to ready his classes for the upcoming Fitness Tests by doing some different activities that help develop the skills necessary for participation in the Physical Fitness tests. Coach Petko will conclude his Archery/Movement units that were started last month. After the conclusion of these activities, both coaches will be starting our Fall Fitness testing. We are going to be going to the Fitness Gram (based on the Cooper Institute Study) for our testing this year while incorporating the Presidential Fitness Testing into the mix as well. Some of the same testing criteria will cross-over from one to the other, so, we thought it would be best to incorporate both. The main objective of the Fitness Testing is to evaluate Endurance (mile run or Pacer test); Flexibility (Sit & Reach or Modified Sit & Reach); Upper Body Strength (Pull-ups or Flexed Arm Hang…Also Modified Pull-ups or Push-ups are used to build and strengthen this area); Agility (Shuttle Run); Abdominal Strength (Curl Ups); Lower Body Strength (Standing Long Jump); and Speed (50 Yard Dash). Students can practice any of these tests at home to help im-prove in any one of these areas.

We look forward to a great fall this year. The cooler weather that will be coming will be a welcome sight to the heat that we have had since the beginning of the school year. Stay cool, exercise at least 30 minutes a day in some way, eat healthy and get plenty of rest. LET’S GO EAGLES!

FROM THE PE GUYS

Please remember to fill out your student Emergency Contact Information card and return to the teacher as soon as possible.

The weather will be changing soon and students will be having symptoms of colds, which could be coughing and sneezing. Please instruct your students to cough and sneeze into their elbow area. This will help in preventing spreading the droplets that are given off when coughing or sneezing. Hand washing is the best defense to help prevent the spread of germs. All students should know to wash their hands after using the restroom and before eating. When washing their hands they should use approximately 1 dollop of soap or 1 teaspoon. Make sure to wash between fingers, palms and the top of their hands. To scrub your fingernails you can do that by bending the fingers in the palm of the hand while there is still soap and rubbing the nail area. If there is not a place to wash with soap, hand sanitizer will work until they can get to an area to wash. After rinsing remember to turn the faucet off with a paper towel. Nurse Susan
