JAMMU: Asser ting that the situation in Kashmir is fast limping back to nor-mal, Jammu and Kashmir Governor's advisor Farooq Khan today said thenumber of active terrorists in the Valley had declined to 150 or 200 fromthousands earlier. However, he said the terrorists would either have to go tojail or get prepared to face the consequences."Pakistan is making attempts on Kashmir since 1947. Expecting good from itwill be the biggest mistake and every citizen of the state needs to remaincautious," Mr Khan said.Lauding the role of people in helping the security forces to deal with terroristsover the past three decades, he said: "They are our eyes and ears as theyknow everything what is happening and where. They will continue their coop-eration and support like in the past which led to the successful tackling ofter rorism in the state." "Terrorism was not easy to deal with without thesuppor t and cooperation of the people which led to number of terrorists declin-ing to 150 or 200 from thousands earlier," the retired IPS officer, who is seen asbeing instrumental in breaking the backbone of militancy in the 1990s, said.Mr Khan, who joined the BJP after his retirement as IGP, said the situation in thevalley is fast limping back to normal. "No doubt that the people faced somesor t of communication problem in the valley for sometime but today nothinglike that is happening. Till date, 75 per cent of landlines were restored and cell

phones in some districts also star ted working. More restrictions will beeased in the coming days," he said.Mr Khan said schools have opened in most par ts of the valley. Though thestudent attendance was thin earlier, it has also started picking up as "we arepreparing for 9th to 12th class state board of school education examinationsshor tly". "I want to assure the people of Kashmir and Jammu that there is noneed for concern in the new set up for Jammu and Kashmir, which will comeinto effect af ter October 31. You will witness large scale development inevery field, whether related to tourism or any other sector, with each pass-ing day." "Jammu people, who were not given due attention in earlier times,be assured that such a thing will never happen again. All the areas willwitness equitable development under the Union Territory," Mr Khan said. The advisor said the biggest gift which the people of Jammu and Kashmirare getting in the coming months is 50,000 jobs which will be filled up in thenext three months. "The recruitment process will be 100 per cent transpar-ent and based on merit without any discrimination," he said.On the repor ts that relatives of detained people including former chief min-isters are not allowed to meet them, Mr Khan termed it as a "false propa-ganda by vested interests" and said as per the jail manual and law of theland, the relatives of the detained persons are allowed to meet them.

Creating clean growth and jobs inBritish Columbia's energy sectorCanada's natural resources drive our economy and support thousands ofmiddle class jobs. Building modern infrastructure and clean technolo-gies in the resource sector is par t of the Government of Canada's plan toget our resources to new markets, spark economic growth, and acceler-ate Canada's clean energy transition. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Premier of British Columbia,John Horgan, today announced a new Memorandum of Understanding toaffirm their joint commitment to power British Columbia's natural gasproduction and liquefied natural gas (LNG) sectors with clean electricity. The natural gas industry produces about 18 per cent of the province'sgreenhouse gas emissions. By moving to clean power - a process re-ferred to as electrification - we will avoid emissions and position Canadaas a supplier of the world's cleanest natural gas. It will also help BritishColumbia achieve its climate change commitments, and suppor t projectsthat will create new jobs and oppor tunities in rural and Indigenous com-munities across the province. The Government of Canada is working to suppor t infrastructure that bringsclean electricity to Canadian businesses, and helps create good middleclass jobs, a low-carbon economy, and greener communities.QUOTES"Canadians know that economic growth and environmental protection gohand-in-hand. Today, we are committing to work with British Columbia tohelp power the natural gas sector with clean electricity - reducing green-house gas emissions, creating good middle class jobs, and helping makethe province a supplier of the cleanest natural gas in the world."The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada"Canadians are strongest when we work together. Through this Memo-randum of Understanding, we will enhance our collaboration with BritishColumbia to power the natural gas sector with clean electricity, and in theprocess, move toward renewable and sustainable sources of energy thatgrow our economy, generate local jobs, and enhance trade."The Hon. Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Natural Resources"Our governments are working collaboratively to electrify industries andreduce emissions as we put B.C. on a path to a cleaner, better future. Withthis Memorandum of Understanding, we are taking an impor tant stepforward to build a more sustainable economy and protect our environ-ment, while creating opportunities for people."The Hon. John Horgan, Premier of British ColumbiaQUICK FACTS" The Minister of Natural Resources, Amarjeet Sohi, and BritishColumbia's Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Michelle

Mungall signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the federaland provincial governments." A new Canada-British Columbia Clean Power Planning Com-mittee, which includes representatives from the provincial and federalgovernments and BC Hydro, will work to advance projects that increasepower transmission and electrification across the province." The Committee will build on past work including the RegionalElectricity Cooperation and Strategic Infrastructure Initiative, which foundthat oppor tunities to electrify the natural gas sector in British Columbiaare among the most cost-effective in Western Canada." The natural gas industry currently provides good middle classjobs and investments into Canada. Just last year, LNG Canada made ahistoric $40 billion investment - the largest private sector investment inthe country's history - to build a major LNG project in Kitimat, BritishColumbia. The project will create up to 10,000 jobs at the height of construction, lead to billions of dollars in direct government revenues, and include hundreds ofmillions of dollars in contracts for Indigenous businesses." This work is par t of a broader effor t to advance clean power inregions across Canada. Earlier this year, the Government of Canada, together with the Atlantic provinces, announced the creation of an Atlan-tic Clean Power Planning Committee to develop a Clean Power Roadmapfor Atlantic Canada." In April 2019, the Government of Canada announced up to $83.6million toward the Peace Region Electricity Supply project through theInvesting in Canada infrastructure plan. BC Hydro provided the remaining$205.4 million." In December 2018, the Government of British Columbia re-leased CleanBC, its new provincial economic development, energy, andclimate strategy, which prioritized electrification of the natural gas sectoras a way to meet its climate change commitments." In 2016, the Government of Canada worked with provinces andterritories, and engaged Indigenous peoples, to adopt Canada's nationalclimate plan, the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and ClimateChange. The plan contains over 50 specific measures to reduce carbonpollution, help Canadians adapt and become more resilient to the im-pacts of a changing climate, foster clean technology solutions, and cre-ate good jobs that contribute to a stronger economy." Investing in the clean economy presents an enormous eco-nomic oppor tunity. According to the Global Commission on the Economyand the Climate, the clean economy is expected to grow to $26 trillion andcreate 65 million jobs worldwide by 2030.

Imran’s confidence stems from China’s support

Writing in the New York Times, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khanhas demanded that India abrogate the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019which comes into effect on October 31. Not doing so could lead toconflict. What could be the basis of his temerity? Not the suppor t ofhis army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, or the latter’s assess-ment of India’s unpreparedness for war.Khan’s confidence comes from the recent visit of the Vice-Chairmanof China’s Central Military Commission (CMC), General Xu Qiliang, who led a powerful delegation comprising all wings of the People’sLiberation Army (PLA) to Pakistan two days before Khan’s ultimatumon Kashmir. How seriously should Xu’s Pakistan visit be taken, espe-cially when Khan’s demand, sounding outlandish, got little credencein India?Xu, as number two to Chairman, CMC, Xi Jinping, and his confidant(their association goes back a long way when they worked in theFujian province), runs the PLA. Serving his third term as a CMC mem-ber, Xu, as deputy secretary of the CMC’s ‘reform leading group’, wasresponsible for the PLA’s 2015 military reforms which spurred the USto focus — after 16 years of counter-terror operations — on state-on-state wars. As the first PLA Air Force (PLAAF) head to be appointed tothe CMC, Xu is responsible for the Shaheen series of annual air forces'exercise between the PLAAF and Pakistan Air Force in nor th Ladakh.Coincident ly, Shaheen-VI I — with the purpose of bui ld inginteroperability (ability to fight together on common missions) —was being conducted in the Chinese city of Holton, 300 km nor th ofLeh, with PAF fighters taking off from Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, dur-ing Xu’s visit to Pakistan. The Shaheen series star ted soon af ter December 2010 when on theeve of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to India, Beijing announcedthat its border with India was a mere 2,000 km (India insists it is

Pravin SawhneyStrategic Affairs Exper t

3,488 km). China excluded Ladakh. Incidentally, nor th Ladakh, withpoor and mostly non-existent infrastructure, is a serious vulnerabilityof the Indian military.Xu’s Pakistan visit, given the timing, had two purposes. The first wasto convey Xi’s full suppor t for Pakistan’s core concern (Kashmir). Xucame to tell Pakistan that Kashmir would be Xi’s topmost agendapoint when he meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11 atMahabalipuram to take the Wuhan understanding forward. The meet-ing would be three weeks before the Kashmir Act comes into effect.Xu met Pakistan President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Imran Khan, theChairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Gen Zubair MahmoodHayat, Chief of Army Staff, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of NavalStaff, Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, and Chief of Air Staff, Air ChiefMarshal Mujahid Anwar Khan. Meeting the top political and militaryleadership individually is unprecedented and is reflective of the closebond between Pakistan and China since the declaration of the 2013China Pakistan Economic Corridor. The other purpose of Xu’s visit was to sign 10 memoranda of under-standing for the Pakistan military’s capacity building. With PLA sup-por t for capacity (war material) and capability (interoperability) build-ing with Pakistan, the realistic threat facing India is neither one front(Pakistan) nor two fronts (Pakistan and China), but a collusive front— Pakistan military supported by PLA’s non-kinetic capabilities com-prising cyber, electronic and space war fare. The PLA could disrupt or debilitate India’s power and telecommunica-tion grids and satellite communications —most of which use Chinesecomponents as they are inexpensive — with its impressive cyberoffensive capabilities and throw normal life completely out of gear.India is not prepared for this eventuality. Or a few PLA contingentscould cross the Line of Actual Control, as they did in Depsang in 2013,and simply sit there, with hot food and logistics being provided by itsrear. Evicting them physically would mean war ; not doing so would

amount to national humiliation.China does not need to go to war with India since its military coercion(given the huge disparity in military powers) is enough to meet itsobjectives. A top Chinese objective during Xi’s visit could be restora-tion of status quo — what Khan is demanding — in Kashmir. ChineseForeign Minister Wang Yi had, while meeting his Pakistani counter-par t Shah Mahmood Qureshi on August 9 in Beijing, said, “Chinabelieves that unilateral actions (by India) that will complicate thesituation should not be taken.” China has expressed its displeasureboth at the revocation of Ar ticles 370 and 35A, and the creation of twounion territories. Why a strong Chinese reaction was not anticipated and taken intoaccount by Delhi is difficult to understand. Perhaps, the Modi govern-ment, believing in its own invincibility and of the armed forces, hadfelt that the passage of the Kashmir Bill through Parliament would beenough to make momentous changes. Moreover, China, given its nu-merous distractions, like the US trade war, Hong Kong, One Belt OneRoad etc, would, like earlier times, pay lip service to Pakistan. Also,China would not jeopardise its nearly $90-billion annual trade withIndia. Fur thermore, once other major powers accept India’s position,China would, in its wisdom, keep quiet. The coming second Wuhan informal summit is likely to prove India’sassessment (if one was done) wrong. On May 5, 2017, in a talk at theUnited Services Institution of India — Indian military’s think tank —Chinese ambassador in India Luo Zhaohui, while commenting on theWuhan Summit (where he was present), mentioned the possibility ofa trilateral China-India-Pakistan summit, some time in the future inpassing. Perhaps, the future has come early.Xi is likely to tell India that status quo must be maintained on Kashmir(in effect, asking India to reverse the move on Kashmir) so that bilat-eral talks between India and Pakistan could star t. Whether Modi wouldbe able to ignore Xi’s demand needs to be seen.

Xu came to tell Pakistan that Kashmir would be Xi’s topmost agenda pointwhen he meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11 atMahabalipuram to take the Wuhan understanding forward. The meetingwould be three weeks before the Kashmir Act comes into effect.Xu met Pakistan President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Imran Khan, theChairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Gen Zubair MahmoodHayat, Chief of Army Staff, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of NavalStaff, Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, and Chief of Air Staff, Air ChiefMarshal Mujahid Anwar Khan. SURREY: Canada’s natural resources drive our economy and suppor tthousands of middle class jobs. Building modern infrastructure and cleantechnologies in the resource sector is part of the Government of Canada’splan to get our resources to new markets, spark economic growth, andaccelerate Canada’s clean energy transition. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Premier of British Columbia,John Horgan, today announced a new Memorandum of Understanding toaffirm their joint commitment to power British Columbia’s natural gasproduction and liquefied natural gas (LNG) sectors with clean electricity. The natural gas industry produces about 18 per cent of the province’sgreenhouse gas emissions. By moving to clean power – a process re-ferred to as electrification – we will avoid emissions and position Canadaas a supplier of the world’s cleanest natural gas. Today, we are committing to work with British Columbia tohelp power the natural gas sector with clean electricity – reducing green-house gas emissions, creating good middle class jobs, and helping makethe province a supplier of the cleanest natural gas in the world."The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada"Canadians are strongest when we work together. Through this Memo-randum of Understanding, we will enhance our collaboration with BritishColumbia to power the natural gas sector with clean electricity, and in theprocess, move toward renewable and sustainable sources of energy thatgrow our economy, generate local jobs, and enhance trade."The Hon. signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the federal and pro-vincial governments.A new Canada-British Columbia Clean Power Planning Committee, whichincludes representatives from the provincial and federal governmentsand BC Hydro, will work to advance projects that increase power trans-mission and electrification across the province. The Committee will build on past work including the Regional ElectricityCooperation and Strategic Infrastructure Initiative, which found that op-por tunities to electrify the natural gas sector in British Columbia areamong the most cost-effective in Western Canada. The natural gas industry currently provides good middle class jobs andinvestments into Canada. Just last year, LNG Canada made a historic $40billion investment – the largest private sector investment in the country’shistory – to build a major LNG project in Kitimat, British Columbia. Theproject will create up to 10,000 jobs at the height of construction, lead tobillions of dollars in direct government revenues, and include hundredsof millions of dollars in contracts for Indigenous businesses. This work is part of a broader effor t to advance clean power in regionsacross Canada. Earlier this year, the Government of Canada, togetherwith the Atlantic provinces, announced the creation of an Atlantic CleanPower Planning Committee to develop a Clean Power Roadmap for At-lantic Canada. In April 2019, the Government of Canada announced up to $83.6 milliontoward the Peace Region Electricity Supply project through the Investingin Canada infrastructure plan. BC Hydro provided the remaining $205.4million.In December 2018, the Government of British Columbia released CleanBC,its new provincial economic development, energy, and climate strategy, which prioritized electrification of the natural gas sector as a way to meetits climate change commitments. In 2016, the Government of Canada worked with provinces and territo-ries, and engaged Indigenous peoples, to adopt Canada’s national cli-mate plan, the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and ClimateChange. The plan contains over 50 specific measures to reduce carbonpollution, help Canadians adapt and become more resilient to the im-pacts of a changing climate, foster clean technology solutions, and cre-ate good jobs that contribute to a stronger economy.Investing in the clean economy presents an enormous economic oppor-tunity. According to the Global Commission on the Economy and theClimate, the clean economy is expected to grow to $26 trillion and create65 million jobs worldwide by 2030.

AHEAD OF SC HEARING ON SYL,CAPT MEETS UNION MINISTER

NEW DELHI: On the eve of Supreme Cour t hearing on theSYL issue, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singhtoday called on Union Jalshakti Minister Gajendra SinghShekhawat. Although the Union Ministry and the PunjabGovernment were evasive on the contentious SYL is-sue, sources said the issue figured during the meetingbetween the two leaders. The meeting assumes signifi-cance in the context that the mediation by the ministry atthe instance of the apex cour t to help arrive at an ami-cable solution to the issue before the next date of hearingon September 3 came to naught. The ministry had con-vened two joint meetings of the chief secretaries ofPunjab and Haryana, but failed to break the logjam asboth sides continued with their tough adversarial posi-tion. With the states continuing with their respective po-sitions, the ministry gave up on exercise of mediation, and left the two to battle it in the cour t.After the meeting, Capt Amarinder declined to commenton the SYL issue, saying the matter was sub judice. Healso said the matter did not figure in the meeting withShekhawat. He said he apprised the minister of the rav-ages caused by the floods in the state, which was not ina position to bear the losses, year after year. One of theremedial measures suggested by him was de-silting andcreation of water reservoirs.

KHALSA AID WOMEN TEAM REACHES OUT TO VILLAGERSMALSIAN (JALANDHAR): Among the 100 volunteers slugging itout day and night to prepare 25-kg relief kits for Punjab’s flood hitat the Khalsa Aid warehouse in Malsian, there is only one womanrelentlessly putting in her bit.An IAF officer, an author/ activist, a model and Khalsa Aid’s ownfiesty coordinator are members of the prolific all-woman team whichextended relief to women and children during the Punjab floods. The six-member team was constituted especially to reach out towomen who weren’t opening up to men even amidst a crisis. It isthe only all-women team which did relief work during floods. Whilea majority of volunteers and members chipped in during their holi-days and have now gone back, Nazia (30), education coordinatorwith Khalsa Aid for the past two years, who was par t of the veryfirst batches of Khalsa Aid to begin relief in Punjab, stays on atJalandhar. She is the lone woman in Khalsa Aid’s current ware-house team of 100 volunteers. Other members of the team wereAssam-based IAF officer Flight Lieutenant Navpreet Sandhu, activ-ist/ author Gurmehar Kaur, model/ar tist Himanshi Khurana andMohali-based activist Khemjot. Yelling out “Anyone needs pads?”in flood hit areas — the teams gave many a lesson in “no shame totalk about menstrual hygiene”.Nazia said, “Boys had been going inside for days but the decision

to involve an all-woman team was taken after we realised womenwere not opening up. Women and children are the worst hit intimes of calamities but there is still a lack of awareness and reluc-tance to open up to men. We formed a team and a whole newspectrum of problems came up. While they earlier stayed insidetheir homes, on spotting a women team they literally reached out tous. We met women who hadn’t defecated for hours, finding dryplaces in night. They told us issues — menstrual hygiene, sanita-tion, not enough clothes to wear, not enough sanitary napkins.”

Pakistan wants peacefulresolution of Kashmir through

negotiations: QureshiForeign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, onTuesday said that his country wants a peaceful resolution ofthe Kashmir issue through negotiations with India. The minister added that Pakistan's foreign policy was pre-pared keeping in view the internal and external issues. Witheffective foreign policy, Pakistan has made its name in theworld, he asser ted. Pakistan has been rattled by India's deci-sion to abrogate Ar ticle 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, whichgave it a special status.India's decision has been hailed in-ternationally with several countries calling the move India'sinternal matter even as Pakistan has been trying tointernationalise the issue. Previously, Home Minister Shahhad said the revocation of the special status has paved theway for development in Jammu and Kashmir and it will be a"final nail in the coffin of terrorism." But, Pakistan has beentrying to destabilise the peace and development in the regioneven as its PM Imran Khan, during his US trip last month, acknowledged that there are close to 40,000 terrorists in hiscountry. Despite that. Qureshi claimed that Kashmiri peoplehave been disconnected from the outer world by Indian forcesas there is still a blockage of communication networks in thevalley. We can successfully deal with the regional challengesby resolving the Kashmir issue, he stated.

With Prime Minister NarendraModi appealing to all people of thecountry to keep themselves fit, BJPleaders are going all-out to main-tain a strict exercise regimen. On August 29, the Prime Ministerlaunched a nation-wide 'Fit IndiaMovement' at the Indira GandhiStadium Complex in the nationalcapital. He had urged the massesmust follow it in order to make thecountry fit and healthy. The initiative was launched on theoccasion of the National SportsDay — the birth anniversary oflegendary hockey wizard MajorDhyan Chand, which aims to en-courage people to inculcate physi-cal activity and spor ts in their ev-eryday lives. However, there are few who wantto go exercising without the pres-ence of the politicians. In Delhi, which is the national capital of thecountry, escaping from politiciansis very hard!A senior BJP leader did not go tothe gym at the Constitution Cluband instead, went to a private gymto shed some pounds. However, as he was doing hismorning regime at a private gym,the BJP leader met Congressleader Rahul Gandhi and hisbrother-in-law Rober t Vadra. Asthey say, humour also keeps mindfit, the politician indulged in a bit ofmental exercise. Taking a dig atGandhi and Vadra, the BJP leaderquipped, "I did say that I met RahulGandhi and Robert Vadra. Who saidthat I met politicians? I don't con-sider Rahul Gandhi as a politician.Meeting fellow politicians whileexercising spoils the discipline."

CONTD. FROM PAGE 3During the interview, Mr Jaishankar ruled out any possi-bility of relaunching bilateral talks with Pakistan -- assuggested by Imran Khan -- so long as the neighbouringcountry changes its ways. "Terrorism is not somethingthat's being conducted in the dark corners of Pakistan. It's done in broad daylight," he said, adding that there wasno question of New Delhi and Islamabad approaching thenegotiating table until the latter stops financing and re-cruiting terrorist groups. An op-ed ar ticle that appeared in The New York Timeshad Imran Khan terming the Narendra Modi government'sdecision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir's special statuslast month as an "assault on Kashmir and its people". He alsoclaimed that a military escalation between the nuclear powers wasimminent unless global powers intervene in the matter. In his interview with Politico, Mr Jaishankar maintainedthat the communications blockade in Kashmir was nec-essary to stop the activation of "terrorist assets" even if itmeant inconveniencing the people to some extent. "Howdo I cut off communications between terrorists and theirmasters on the one hand, but keep the Internet open forother people? I would be delighted to know," he said. However, the External Affairs Minister expressed confi-dence that security restrictions across the region wouldbe eased in the "coming days". This would involve theredeployment of police to their original duties and a re-duction in the number of additional security forces acrossKashmir, he said, adding: "Frankly, they have other jobsand other things to do."Mr Jaishankar also denied Imran Khan's claim that therewas a Hindu nationalist agenda behind scrapping Jammuand Kashmir's special status. "The kind of people whosay this are people who don't know India," he said. "Doesthis sound like the culture of India?"He also dismissed suggestions that the BJP government couldtry and strip the powers of other states in the country, saying that thesituation in Jammu and Kashmir was "unique".During his visit to Brussels, Mr Jaishankar met EuropeanParliament president David Sassoli and European Unionforeign policy chief Federica Mogherini. According to news agencyPTI, Ms Mogherini repor tedly urged for resumption of India-Paki-stan talks and stressed on the need to "restore the rights and free-doms of the Kashmir population".

IMRAN KHAN CAUTIONS NUKE WAR BETWEENINDIA, PAK COULD'VE DANGEROUS CONSEQUENCES

Escalating his threat of a nuclear war on India, Prime Minister ImranKhan on Sunday said that the conflict between India and Pakistanwould not be limited between the two nuclear-armed countries andcould have dangerous consequences across the region.Addressing the Islamic Society of Nor th America in Houston via videocall, Khan said that he raised this point during his talks with worldleaders while apprising them of the Kashmir situation, Radio Paki-stan repor ted.Pakistan has been desperately trying to internationalise the Kashmirissue since New Delhi in a historic decision abrogated the constitu-tional status accorded to the region. However, Islamabad has been snubbed on all fronts as the interna-tional community has made it clear that the Kashmir issue is strictlyNew Delhi's internal matter. In the video, Khan also said that India might "resor t to attacking Paki-stan for diver ting world attention from its human rights abuses inJammu and Kashmir." The Prime Minister reiterated that India will begiven a "befitting response if it launched any aggression against us."He fur ther alleged that India tried to change the status of Kashmir byviolating the relevant UN resolutions.Reiterating his diabolic outrage against the RSS, the Prime Ministersaid the current Indian regime is a "staunch follower of RSS, an ide-ology born out of hatred and Hindu supremacy."Pakistan has approached various world leaders, including Abu Dhabi

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Saudi Arabia's CrownPrince Mohammed Bin Salman, French President Emmanuel Macronand the Jordanian King Abdullah II to seek their interventions into theissue. However, Pakistan has been told to engage bilaterally withIndia to end tensions.India has repeatedly made it clear that talks with Pakistan are onlypossible after Islamabad stops sponsoring terror. In addition, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on had alsowritten to the UN Security Council last week over the "developments"in Jammu and Kashmir. He has previously reached out to the UNSC President on August 1, 6and 13, according to an official press release.

Brexit endgame is on with urgent motion, poll talkBritain’s parliament re-opened on Tuesday after the summer recessin the charged context of Brexit-related action on various fronts, withMPs seeking an emergency debate and cour ts hearing challenges toHouse prorogation amid intense talk of a mid-term election.Action in parliament focussed on securing the debate and passinglegislation to ensure that the Boris Johnson government is prohibitedfrom leaving the EU on October 31 without an agreement. Voting isexpected on Tuesday evening (the government has a majority of one). The Conservative par ty has been rocked with former chancellor PhilipHammond and others reacting with fury suggestions that Johnson asleader of the par ty would de-select them as candidates in the electionif they voted with the opposition in parliament. The Cour t of Session in Scotland began a substantive hearing of thechallenge to prorogation, while the high cour t of England permittedformer Conservative Prime Minister John Major to join a similar chal-lenge brought by Indian-origin activist Gina Miller.Officials briefed journalists that if the opposition bill seeking to stop ano-deal Brexit were to be passed, the government would quickly movea motion to hold a mid-term election. Such a motion would needLabour ’s suppor t since a two-thirds majority is needed to trigger theelection. October 14 is the date mentioned as the most likely for themid-term election, which would be the third in the last five years, after the general election in 2015 and the mid-term election in 2017.

However, much manoeuvring inside and outside parliament is neededbefore the election is agreed and announced. In an interview seen as ‘extraordinary’, Hammond on Tuesday camedown heavily on his par ty leader Johnson for claims that MPs con-cerned with the debilitating impact of a no-deal Brexit and who votewith the opposition would be de-selected as candidates. He told BBC: “There’s a group of Conservative who feel very stronglythat now is the time where we have to put the national interest aheadof any threats to us personally and our careers. I think there will beenough people for us to get this over the line.”

RISHABH PANT BEATS MS DHONI TOSCRIPT NEW MILESTONE IN TESTS

Day 3 saw India take firm control over the second Test match inJamaica. The bowlers mopped up the tail of West Indies as India tooka lead of 299 runs, opted to bat again and then set West Indies as target of 468runs. In response, West Indies had lost two wickets and when the stumps weredrawn, the hosts were 45 for 2. Kraigg Brathwaite was dismissed by IshantSharma when the right-hander was lured into a false drive outside the off stumpand nicked it behind to Rishabh Pant who took an easy catch. With this dismissal,Pant claimed his 50th wicket-keeping dismissal in Tests and in the pro-cess, became the fastest Indian ‘keeper to reach this milestone (in 11Tests). He over took MS Dhoni, who had taken 15 Tests to this feat.Sapping conditions could have forced Virat Kohli not to enforce thefollow on and this also allowed KL Rahul to find some form. However, the right-hander, with his new technique, struggled while he was atthe crease. Also, Cheteshwar Pujara, who has not been able to hit his stridethis series, did not find any momentum. Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari gottogether after captain Virat Kohli was sent back for a golden duck. The in-formRahane (64 not out) and Vihari (53 not out) got India’s second innings back on trackafter the top-four were dismissed for 57 runs. The fifth-wicket partnership allowedIndia to declare at 168 for four, giving their bowlers 13 overs to have a crack on thestruggling West Indies batsmen.

RATING - 3/5

This light-hear ted romantic film is about Rano (Sargun Mehta) whoharbours the dream of marrying a rich, handsome guy living in Canada. This childhood wish stays with her as she grows up, but the realityaround her hits her too. She is aware that she is not conventionallybeautiful to attract her white knight, doesn’t have the qualifications forimmigration nor does she have a rich father who could sponsor her.Living in a village, all there is to her rescue is her talent as a makeupar tist. Even af ter being outstanding at it, she knows people look downupon it. One wrong step towards fulfilling her dream of travelling toanother country and she is forced to marry Sukhwinder (GurnamBhullar), a regular-looking boy who works at a factory. Right beforethe marriage, the scene where her conscience fights—one side tell-ing her to run away and live a life of her choice and the other tellingher to be a sincere daughter and think of her parents’ image, is amoving one. It shows the conflicts an average girl, from a humblebackground goes through in her life. Her world falls apar t as shesuccumbs to her parents’ wish. The first half of the film introduces us to Rano’s dream, her familybackground, her marriage and the new family she moves into. Wealso get a glimpse of the sensitive yet introver t person that Sukhwinderis. A keen observer, he guesses that Rano is not happy. When heprobes her, she discloses her desire to move abroad. She also tellshim about her stint at a beauty parlour. The actor takes the characterto another level with his innocence and charming onscreen persona. The events that follow shape the story. From leaving his house to renta small place, setting up a parlour (called Surkhi Bindi) for his wife, lending a hand in household chores to braving the condemnation ofthe world that calls him subservient to his wife, Sukha is a man every

woman dreams of but seldom expresses. And Gurnam’s true-to-the-character per formance makes it all the more endearing. The slowdeveloping chemistry between Sargun Mehta and Gurnam Bhullar ispalpable. The second half of the movie is predictable but keeps youconnected never theless. All the emotions that the two live and theirfamily and friends experience you as a viewer can understand andrelate to them. Rupinder Rupi and Nisha Bano have also done a thor-ough job of their characters. It’s not the regular Punjabi comedy but issurely a subject that invokes your sensibilities subtly.A fairy-tale it may seem to most women viewers and an unreal, over-the-top drama to men but this movie has its hear t in the right place. Ina patriarchal society, to show a man who is so suppor tive and avail-able to his wife is sure to be considered disparaging. But the biggermessage, that everyone, ir respective of the gender, has the right tolive their dreams is the core of this beautiful love story.

Prabhas tries hard in a film thatis too silly to realise its ambitions

M O V I E R E V I E W

CAST: PRABHAS, SHRADDHA KAPOOR,

ARUN VIJAY, NEIL NITHIN MUKESH,

CHUNKY PANDEY, JACKIE SHROFF

DIRECTION: SUJEETH

RATING - 2/5

Prabhas’s Saaho is so ambitious in its scale that it almost fools youinto believing it’s a great film. Unfor tunately, it doesn’t even comeclose to being great and just manages to emerge as a decent watch, provided you’re not tired by its stretched run-time. The film ends upas one of those big budget attempts that’s highly ambitious and sillyat the same time. While Prabhas tries to hold it together in whateverway possible, Saaho is mostly underwhelming if not for the grandeurand couple of solid action stretches.Saaho, just like Pawan Kalyan’s Agnyaathavaasi, borrows its basicplot from French thriller Largo Winch. The plot is centred on an adoptedson who has to prove his legitimacy to take over his father’s empireafter he’s brutally murdered. The twist revolves around the identity ofthe adopted son. But Saaho is packed with so many twists that itspoils the broth by the time the original identity of the son (no browniepoint for guessing) is revealed, and if you’re smar t, you can easilysee the twist coming halfway into the film. The twists are so conve-niently written that it dilutes the shock value it brings along with it. Asmore twists are unraveled, Saaho ends up becoming a tiring watch;one where all the money spent on lavish visuals and action is onlyletdown by sloppy writing. The film features some great acting talents. From Jackie Shroff toMandira Bedi and Chunky Pandey, it is hard to get a more power fulcast. Sadly, none of these actors get to play a character that’s even

remotely exciting. Chunky Pandey speaks in shor t stories. Every timehe’s on screen, we hear a short story that has no purpose at all. If onlymore time was spent on writing than making these characters looksuave on screen, we’d have had better per formances. Neil NithinMukesh is clueless in a role that gets overshadowed by Prabhas andeven by Shraddha Kapoor at times. Arun Vijay looked like he waskidnapped from the sets of Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, playing a similar character and even sounding like it when he strainsin a crucial scene. Shraddha is decent and puts on a show in theaction sequences.Prabhas tries to shoulder Saaho single-handedly, and he manages tokeep it afloat as much as possible. But there are some por tions –especially in the first half - that are so flat that even he can’t save thefilm. The trailer of Saaho promised a high-octane, power-packed ac-tion film but all that’s packed into one bloated segment towards theend. As much as the last 15 odd minutes features some breathtakingaction, Saaho doesn’t leave you with a high. In fact, it leaves you withthe thought that it could’ve cut down on a lot of flab which includecouple of songs.Saaho, in shor t, ends up as a film that never quite makes the intendedimpact in spite showing promise.

This filmis a gift to my kids.”Chhichhore’s director Nitesh Tiwari delivered one of the biggesthits in Indian cinema with Dangal. However, when asked about thepressure at the box office, the director said he doesn’t think toomuch about it. “As far as the box-office is concerned, we didn’tknow Dangal would become such a huge success. We made Dangalpurely for the love of the story. We felt that the story needed to betold. We never kept the box-office result in mind, so there wasnever pressure when we made ‘Dangal’,” Tiwari told IANS.“However, af ter the success of Dangal, the only pressure I wouldtake would not be the box-office pressure. That would be unreal tohave... to take that pressure. You can’t say ‘My film is going toper form so much at the box-office’. The only pressure and it is onlyhuman for me to feel that way is, I want to live up to the expecta-tions of people. Whatever expectations they may have of me afterDangal. I hope I will be successful in exceeding their expecta-tions,” he added.

BUMRAH TO KOHLI: MYHAT-TRICK IS YOURS!

KINGSTON: “I owe my hat-trick to the captain,” JaspritBumrah told an enamoured Virat Kohli after blowing awayWest Indies with his heady cocktail of line and length, paceand bounce. After Bumrah removed one of the West Indiesbatsmen, Kohli was caught on the stump mic saying: “Whata bowler man! What a bowler!”Par t of the credit for Bumrah’s hat-trick goes to skipper Kohli, who insisted on a review after Roston Chase, his third vic-tim, was initially given not out by the on-field umpire, PaulReiffel. India’s review was upheld as Bumrah became onlythe third Indian to claim a hat-trick in Tests. “Actually I didn’tknow, I was not very sure of the appeal,” Bumrah told Kohliin an ‘interview’ for the BCCI website. “I thought it was bat soI didn’t appeal so much, but it was a good review in the end.So, I think, I owe that hat-trick to the captain.”It is not easy to sweep Kohli off his feet, but Bumrah has done that a fewtimes in recent times, and the second day of the second Test againstWest Indies provided one such instance. “When there is so much of helpfrom the wicket, you can get greedy, you try to be over-aggressive,”Bumrah said. “At that time, you have to keep things simple, just try andbowl good balls and create pressure. That was the thing that was goingon in my head. We saw in the previous innings they (West Indiesbowlers) were getting a lot of bounce and they were getting late move-ment as well.” Kohli asked the leader of the pace pack aboutthe understanding among the fast bowlers. “There is a lot ofcommunication that goes on and off the field. When I amgetting wickets, somebody else’s job is to create pressure,” Bumrahsaid. “When somebody else is getting wickets, my job is to createpressure. Ishant has played more than 90 Tests, Shami has played a lotof Tests. So lot of ideas come in and then we try to help eachother if things are not going well, push each other.”

UNBREAKABLE DJOKERNEW YORK: Defending champion Novak Djokovic silenced concerns about his left shoulder as the Serbian breezed past AmericanDenis Kudla 6-3 6-4 6-2 on Friday to reach the last-16 at the US Open.Djokovic's title defence looked to be in jeopardy in his previous match when he received treatment on his shoulder several times, anissue which he said had impacted his serve and backhand. But he looked to be playing pain-free against Kudla, the 16-time Grand Slamchampion winning 81% of his first-serve points and turning aside all seven break points he faced against the unseeded American.Kudla, who due to a rain delay earlier this week was playing his second match in as many days, brought incredible energy into thematch and raced around the cour t to make a number of shots that surprised Djokovic but was simply overmatched.Up next for Djokovic will be former champion Stan Wawrinka Wawrinka, who beat Italy's Paolo Lorenzi 6-4 7-6(9) 7-6(4) to reach thelast-16 for the first time since he won the title three years ago. He served 24 aces and hit 64 winners but also made 50 unforced errors.Roger Federer was at dominant best as he cruised into the round of 16 with straight-set victories. Af ter making sluggish star ts in hisprevious two matches, five-time winner Federer took his game up a notch to power past Briton Dan Evans 6-2 6-2 6-1 under the openroof at Ar thur Ashe Stadium on a sunny day. The 38-year-old fired 48 winners and 10 aces to shake off any remaining rust since hisWimbledon final defeat by Djokovic earlier this year and faces Belgium's David Goffin next.

INDIA WONBY 257 RUNS

Virat Kohli wins record 28th Test as captainKINGSTON: India produced a top-notch bowling per formance in aclinical 257-run demolition of the West Indies in the second Test asa 2-0 series victory put them on top of the ICC World Test Champi-onship points table. The victory was 28th in Tests for Virat Kohlimaking him the most successful Indian captain in the traditionalformat of the spor t.Chasing a near-impossible target of 468, West Indies batting onceagain failed to show stomach for a good fight as they caved in for210 in 59.5 overs, well inside the four th day.It was one of the most satisfying tours for skipper Virat Kohli as histeam had clean sweep in two formats (3-0 in T20Is and 2-0 inTests) while poor weather robbed them in another format (2-0 in 3-match ODI series). The bowling quar tet of Ishant Sharma (2/37 in12 overs), Mohammed Shami (3/65 in 16 overs), Jasprit Bumrah(1/31 in 11 overs) and lone spinner Ravindra Jadeja (3/58 in 16.5overs) were relentless in their pursuit of maintaining a tight leashon the home team batsmen. Such was India's dominance in the twoTest matches that West Indies couldn't even cross 250 in any oftheir four innings and the only half-century was scored by ShamarhBrooks (50) in this game. The win took India's points tally to 120after two games and they lead the nine-team table even thoughPakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa are yet to begin theirbilateral campaign as a par t of the championship. As the darkclouds hovered over the Sabina Park during the post-lunch session, the Indian bowlers upped the ante getting four wickets in the firsthour after lunch to ensure that there isn't any inordinate delay inachieving the desired result. There were a few gains from the

series and the biggest being Hanuma Vihari's per formance as apotent middle-order option with a century and two half-centuries.Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane's welcome return to form, JaspritBumrah's phenomenal show, Jadeja proving his utility as an all-rounder and skipper Kohli lending solidity were the highlights. Theareas of concern will be Rishabh Pant's shoddy show with the batand KL Rahul's repeated failures in the red-ball format that couldlead to selectors looking at other option when South Africa comecalling later this month. As far as the match is concerned, thewriting was on the cards and skipper Virat Kohli effected a brilliantrun-out in the post lunch session. Star ting the post-lunch session at145 for 4, West Indies lost five wickets in just over an hour addingonly 65 runs. In the post-lunch session, Jermaine Blackwood (38)got a delivery from Bumrah that pitched on length and moved ashade to take an outside edge which was gobbled up byRishabh Pant. The Sharmarh Brooks (50)-Blackwood par tner-ship yielded 61 runs for the fifth wicket. Brooks was lucky tosurvive in the pre-lunch session but not so much in the post-lunch session when Kohli's quick reflexes brought about hisdownfall. Brooks pushed one towards point and star ted toamble across as Kohli sprinted from his cover position andpicked the ball and in turned in the same motion to get hisdirect throw on target. Jahmar Hamilton's (0) debut just gotworse with Jadeja snuffing him out in the slips and then Shamiremoved Rahkeem Cornwall with an off-cutter that got theinside edge of his bat to Pant behind the stumps as Shami andJadeja completed the formalities.

Ashes 2019: Steve Waugh joinsAustralian squad as mentorahead of fourth Test match

Ahead of the four th AshesTest match, former Austra-lia cricketer Steve Waughhas rejoined the team astheir squad mentor. Waughhad left the Australian campaf ter the second Ashes Testmatch, played at Lord's.However, the former captainhas joined the team againon Sunday."We asked him to stay forthe third Test, but he had to go back for a function. But hewas actually going to fly there, do the function and fly backthe next day. That's how much he's enjoying it. He's beenlike a kid at Christmas," Cricket.com.au quoted coach Jus-tin Langer as saying. "To come back af ter such a long timeaway from the game, his passion and enthusiasm for thegame has been brilliant and it's going to be great," he added.Former Australia player Ricky Ponting was officially em-ployed by Cricket Australia for the World Cup while Waughhas been appointed for the Ashes series. Langer said bothPonting and Waugh are great psychologists.

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah said that his bowling experience in En-gland helped him in taking wickets against West Indies."I played a lot of cricket in England, we played a lot of Test matches,so over there we bowled with a duke ball. So, there is a lot of move-ment with the duke ball so you get a lot of confidence in outswing, inswing, and whatever you are trying. So, that experience helped mehere," Bumrah told reporters on Sunday af ter the post-match confer-ence. India ended day three of the second Test match in a dominantposition after setting West Indies a target of 468 runs.In pursuit of 468, Windies got off to a poor star t as the side lost itsopener Kraigg Brathwaite (3) in the third over of the innings. IshantSharma had him caught at the hands of wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant.John Campbell (16) was also not able to stay at the crease for a longtime as he was sent back to the pavilion by India pacer MohammadShami as he had caught him at third slip, reducing Windies to 37/2.Shamarh Brooks and Darren Bravo saw off the day without any more

hiccups and Windies ended the day at 45/2, still, 443 runs away fromthe target. In the first innings, Bumrah took his maiden hat-trick andscalped six wickets while in the second innings was not able to bagany wicket so far. "You assist the wicket, you want to see the condi-tion what works here, over there the wicket was different over herethe wicket has a lot more bounce," Bumrah said. "Now the wicket hasgotten a little better. So, the movement has gotten less than the previ-ous innings. We have to bowl well, create pressure from all ends, sothat will help us to be in a good position," he added.Earlier, at the score of 168/4 in the second innings, skipper Virat Kohlidecided to declare India's innings, setting Windies a target of 468 forthe win. Rahane and Vihari were involved in an unbeaten stand of 111runs. The two remained unbeaten on 64 and 53, respectively.

ing his 92nd Test match, has 277 wickets going into the four th day andis third in the list behind Kapil Dev (434 wickets) and Zaheer Khan(311 wickets). “I remember few years back, Zaheer was telling mesomething about 100 Tests but then he didn’t also complete the mile-stone (92 Tests). I mean if I play another 4-5 years, yes I might com-plete but I don’t want to think about it,” Ishant, who surpassed KapilDev for maximum number of wickets by an Indian pacer outside Asia, told host broadcasters Sony Spor ts Network.“I believe if you star t thinking too far ahead, then you can get con-fused, so it is better to start taking one Test match at a time,” said Ishant.Asked about what are new variations he has brought in his bowling, Ishant said,“Now I am able to move the ball away from the left-hander coming fromround the wicket and also get to straighten the deliveries.”Ishant also seemed happy how Jasprit Bumrah has turned out to be alethal weapon in such a short span of time. “Boom is fantastic. Even beforewe are well warmed up into our spell, he is getting five or six wickets. Ijokingly tell him that please wait tell we get warmed up,” he said.
