Dear Members of IOIS and Participating Societities and Delegates

We are delighted that you are participating in the 12th International Ocular Inflammation Society Congress, held in conjunction with 27th Spanish Uveitis Group Special Meeting and 2nd International Assembly of Ocular Inflammation Societies. On behalf of IOIS, I thank you for attending the congress and taking part in the Scientific/educational sessions and sharing your expertise with other participating delegates. I am pleased to state that unlike previous IOIS biannual meetings/congress, the current congress attracted several national and international ocular inflammation societies, which have organized sessions with emphasis on unique and common uveitis entities seen in their regions. This could provide a global perspective on the epidemiological aspects and variations in clinical features, management of uveitis and outcomes in deferent parts of the worlds. Moreover, IOIS scientific program committee of the congress added a special session, president’s symposium to provide current cutting edge clinical science in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular inflammations. Furthermore to enhance management of ocular inflammation globally, the congress has included teaching sessions organized by Jorge Alio focusing on basic and clinical aspects of the ocular inflammations.

As chair of the scientific program committee I had remarkable support and help in developing outstanding program. This could not have been possible without dedicated help from scientific programs committee members, especially Bahram Bodaghi and Rosa Dolz Marco. The congress host, Professor Manuel Diaz Llopis and his team members including Roberto Gallego-Pinanzo were superb in supporting IOIS to accomplish its goal of organizing an outstanding congress at superb venue.

I wish you all enjoyable stay in Valencia and highly fruitful congress in sharing recent advances in the field of Ocular inflammations for better management of our patients and avoiding blindness from uveitis and related ocular inflammations and their complications.

Uveitis is one of the major causes of acquired blindness in the world. The better understanding in the pathogenesis, establishment of accurate diagnosis, and development of new treatments are the major targets of our research.

In my 40 years-experience in the field of uveitis, ocular immunology and inflammation, I have a dilemma and difficulties in the diagnosis of infectious uveitis. In typical cases it can be suspected infectious etiology by ocular manifestations together with systemic tests and immunological and bacteriological examinations. However, there are many cases presenting atypical manifestations, and also these conventional examinations are not much helpful in some cases and not prompt enough for our clinical practice. In the last decade, developments of molecular diagnosis such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) make it possible to detect genomic DNAs of various infectious agents and have been applied for diagnosis of ocular inflammatory diseases.

We challenged to apply the PCR technique in uveitis and established a new diagnostic tool, comprehensive PCR system using small aliquot of intraocular fluids for diagnosis of intraocular infectious diseases. The comprehensive PCR system consists of (1) qualitative multiplex PCR combined with quantitative real-time PCR for all 8 types of human herpes viruses (HHV) and toxoplasmosis, and (2) broad range real-time PCR for bacterial species (bacterial 16 ribosomal DNA) and for fungal species (fungal 18S or 28S ribosomal DNA). The bacterial broad range real-time PCR detects genomic DNA of more than 60% of whole bacterial spices and we further confirmed that the PCR was able to detect genomic DNA of 16 bacteria spices that were commonly found as pathogens of bacterial infectious diseases of the eye.

Our experiences in many patients with uveitis and endophthalmitis disclosed the comprehensive PCR system is very helpful. We further performed a prospective multicenter clinical study in Japan to examine the reliability of the comprehensive PCR system using ocular fluids of 500 patients of various clinical entities of uveitis and endophthalmitis together with 100 control patients with non-inflammatory ocular diseases. It was found that sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive, and negative predictive value were extremely high, i.e. 91.8%, 98.8%, 98.6%, and 92.4%, respectively. Thus, the comprehensive PCR system using only 0.1mL of intraocular fluids provides us accurate and prompt results whether genomic DNA of 8 HHVs, toxoplasmosis, bacterial species, and fungal species are present or absent in the local site of intraocular diseases. It is concluded that the system is very useful for diagnosing ocular diseases and screening of patients for intraocular infections, and further making decisions of treatments of our patients.

AWARDS ❚IOIS GOLD MEDAL

Jorge Alio jointly with David BenEzra developed the idea of creating the International Ocular Inflammation Society (IOIS), in 1990 during the first International Symposium on Ocular Inflammation which was organized in Alicante by both of them. Jorge Alio was involved from the beginning as General Secretary and treasurer, a position which he held until the IOIS meeting in Goa in 2011, where he took the position of Executive Office.

Since then Jorge Alio has contributed to the organization, funding and dissemination of the IOIS. He collaborated with the organization of all the International Symposiums of the society and also organized courses on behalf of the IOIS in different meetings such as the ESCRS, SOE and WOC. He contributed in launching of the initial peer review journal of the IOIS “Ocular Immunology and Inflammation” and, recently the new journal of the society “Journal of Ocular Inflammation and Infection”.

Dr Alio’s areas of scientific interest include ocular inflammation, focusing mainly on cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. He has been the author or co-author of 440 peer review papers, 241 book chapters, 78 books (as editor or co-editor), and over 1000 presentations and invited lectures in international meetings. At present, he holds the LXIII chair of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis, XLIX chair of the European Academy of Ophthalmology and has received a total of 75 international and national awards including two Barraquer Awards (ISRS/AAO) (KMSG), the Rayner Medal (UKIRS), the Arruga Award (SEO) Acknowledgment, Senior and Secretariat Awards of the AAO, Lifetime Achievement Award (ISRS/AAO), two Kelman Award (V,R, 650), Strampelli Award (IRSS), Guillermo Pico Award (SPO) Waring medal (Slack inc.) and Bober Ans Award (DOE). He has directed a total of 56 PhD doctorate projects and is visiting professor of several European, Latin American and US universities. Dr Alio participates in a number of boards of international scientific ophthalmological organizations. He is elected member of the American Ophthalmological Society. He is the founder of the Foundation that has his name dedicated to the promotion of the prevention of blindness with actions both in Spain and on international levels, particularly in Mauritania where an Eyesight Center is being created at the present moment with the support of other international charity organizations.

Valencia is located in the eastern coast of spain, at 354 km east of Madrid and at 351 km to the south of Barcelona. By plane it is directly connected to the main capitals of Europe. Delegates arriving at Madrid or Barcelona’s airports, can either take connection flights or reach Valencia by train.

bY Plane

Valencia’s international airport is located in the nearby town of manises, at about 8 km from the city. Valencia connects with destinations all over the world, either directly or through Madrid and Barcelona. The main operating companies are iberia, air nostrum and air euroPa. This airport also operates with low cost companies. From the airport you can take a taxi or the underground to reach the Valencia conference centre or your hotel.

bY taxiValencia’s airport is a safe place, so don’t doubt on taking a taxi from this point. The trip to the Valencia Conference Centre takes about 25 minutes and costs around 20 €. Taxi trips that start at the airport are always more expensive since they include a special airport fare. Except specified, most taxis don’t accept credit card payments so be sure to have some pocket money when arriving. Taxi is the best option to reach hotels or the Valencia Conference Centre after 19h or very early in the morning. Just provide the name of your hotel and the taxi driver will select the most convenient route.

There are two underground lines which link the airport, the city centre and the port. line 3 (airport-rafelbunyol) and line 5 (airport-marítim serrería or torrent). It takes about 20 minutes to arrive to the city centre. First train departs at 5:29 a.m. and the last train at 23:59 p.m., with trains every 25 minutes. To get to the Valencian Convention Centre or nearby hotels, you may follow this instructions: At the airport you must take line 3 or 5, get down at the station Ángel guimerà, then take line 1 direction Seminari, Bétera or Lliria and get off at empalme station. Finally, take line 4 direction Dr.Lluch until you arrive to the Palau de congressos (Valencia Conference Centre) station.

Valencia can be easily reached by train from Madrid or Barcelona. Trains from these two cities arrive at Valencia Joaquín Sorolla station in the heart of the city. From Barcelona departure is from Sants Station and you can take different trains that reach Valencia in about 3 – 3h30 hours. From Madrid departure is from Puerta de Atocha station. The fastest option by train from Madrid is the AVE Madrid-Valencia (high speed train), that connects both cities in 1:35 h (direct) and 1:50 h (with two stops).
