On Wednesday, June 26th, 2019, the Industrial Security and Safety Department (ISD), arranged an awareness session at Office Park

Lectures Hall, in interaction with the World Drugs Day. After welcoming the attendees by Mohammad M. Al-Qahtani, Superintendent of Industrial Security, Mr. Nazal Al-Rashidi, from Khafji Narcotics Control Department, delivered a lecture about drugs and its dangerous effects. He stated that drug abuse has become one of the most critical problems afflicting all countries worldwide. Due to the major dangers triggered by drug abuse on all health, social, economic and security respects, all countries have diligently sought to fight such a problem which has no longer been confined to a definite type of drugs, neither has it been related to a certain country or social segment. He added that addiction is a result of continuously and heavily using narcotic substances, until such a user cannot psychologically or

physically dispense with such substances. After the body develops drug tolerance, it becomes in need for more doses of such drugs to achieve the same effects previously experienced. With such constantly increasing doses in a short period, both body and mind become affected in a way that the addict will no longer be able to perform his daily duties without such drugs.About the reasons of addiction, he demonstrated that lack of awareness regarding dangers of drug abuse, poor religious commitment and inappropriate social upbringing, broken homes, poverty, ignorance and illiteracy, parental negligence towards their children and unemployment are among the main reasons leading to addiction. As for its complications, he demonstrated that dependence on drugs can create a number of life-changing complications, including mental and physical health problems, unconsciousness, coma and sudden

death, getting communicable diseases, together with many other legal and financial complications. After Scorching Europe, Heat Wave Is Poised to Melt Greenland

A heat wave that shattered records in Europe this week is on the

move, and it could melt billions of tons of ice in Greenland.Hot air that originated over Northern Africa recently brought blistering heat to Europe; yesterday (July 25), Paris sizzled at a staggering 108.7 degrees Fahrenheit (42.6 degrees Celsius), and temperature records were broken across the continent by up to 6 degrees F (3 degrees C), according to Accuweather.com.Today (July 26), a representative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced that atmospheric flow would carry this scorching heat to Greenland, which lost over 170 billion tons (160 billion metric tons) of ice in July and 80 billion tons (72 billion metric tons) of ice in June from surface melting alone, Reuters reported. [Images: Greenland›s Gorgeous Glaciers]When this warm air arrives in Greenland, it will likely cause

«another major peak in melt area,» said Twila Moon, a research scientist with the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colorado.Intense melt during the summer months has been the norm rather than the exception in Greenland since 2006, NSIDC reported in 2013. More ice is lost every year, with the rate of melt accelerating rapidly, Moon told Live Science in an email. This could have serious implications worldwide by contributing to rising sea levels and further disrupting global climate, Joyce Msuya, the U.N. Environment›s acting executive director, said in a statement in March.«What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic,» Msuya said. «More urgent climate action is needed to steer away from tipping points that could be even worse for our planet than we first thought.»Primed for meltDuring the 1970s and the 1980s,

Greenland lost an average of 50 billion tons (45 billion metric tons) of ice each year. From 2010 to 2018, that figure shot up to an average of 290 billion tons (263 billion metric tons) annually. This summer, the extent of the melt could surpass the record set in 2012. That year, about 97% of the ice sheet›s surface thawed, NASA-JPL Caltech reported at the time.«2012 was a year of particularly large ice loss. Unfortunately, an early melt event in Greenland in June may have primed some of the ice sheet surface for more melt,» Moon said. The ice sheet is losing its surface snow; warming is also creating lakes and ice crystals on the sheet›s surface, increasing the likelihood of further melting. The good news is that even substantial ice loss from just one year probably won›t create a tipping point for Greenland›s ice sheet. The bad news is that significant ice loss over many years — with no years of ice gain

The success of the organization depends on its employees and the ones to whom they are

accountable, i.e. Managers and Supervisors. These are two important positions in an organization, which guide the entire team of workers, in the pursuit of common goals of the organization. Managers are the ones who control and administer the entire enterprise, On the other hand, Supervisor is someone who is the leader in the first line management of the organization and thus looks after the work and performance of the employees. While Manager belongs to business level management, Supervisor is a part of the functional level management of the organization. He/She instructs and monitors his subordinates at work. When one wants to know about various managerial positions in the corporate ladder, he/she should understand the difference between manager and supervisor.Definition of SupervisorA supervisor is an employee and the head of the front line management who watches the employees and their activities working under him/her. He/She has the authority to delegate the task to the individual workers, approve working hours and to resolve the payroll issues. The duty of the supervisor is to oversee his men working at the workplace and analyze their performance and productivity. The major responsibility of a supervisor is to look after his men that they reach the targeted production level in the stipulated time. They help in the smooth functioning of the day to day operations of the enterprise. The given are some tasks performed by the supervisor in general:To implement the policies made by the upper-level management. To make short action plans as a stepping stone to achieve targets.Assigning work to workers.

Coordinate the people at work.Motivating, guiding and training subordinates.Preparing timely reports regarding the performance of the employees.Listening and resolving the worker complaints and grievances.Definition of ManagerA manager is a person who manages the resources of the organization. By resources, we mean men, money, material, method and machinery. But not only the resources, but a manager is in charge of the entire management of the organization.

There are mainly five functions of a manager, indicated below:

ConclusionThe supervisor has no authority to recruit and terminate employees, but he can take an active part in the hiring process like shortlisting the candidates and interviewing them, but the final decision would be taken by the Human Resource Manager only.

One significant difference between the two is that supervisor looks after the daily activities of the business while a manager doesn’t.PlanningOrganizingStaffingMotivating & Leading

ControllingCoordination. In general, a manager does not do any work himself but gets it done by his subordinates. He/She is the representative of the whole department, unit or division of the second level or top level management. He/She has got the authority to recruit employees and terminate them as well. There are some managers in a single organization, i.e. general manager, production manager, finance manager, sales manager, customer relationship manager, etc. The function of these managers is based on the department they head.

But mice are not people, as critics of such studies are quick to point out.In humans, researchers have reported associations between processed foods

and health outcomes, such as an increased risk of developing obesity, cancer, autoimmune conditions, and even death.According to the NOVA food classification system, ultra-processed foods include soft drinks, packaged snacks, meat nuggets, frozen meals, and foods high in additives and low in unprocessed ingredients.«Previous studies have found correlations between ultra-processed food consumption and obesity,» Kevin D. Hall, from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Bethesda, MD, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), explained to Medical News Today.Hall and his colleagues now present the results of a controlled clinical trial, comparing the effects of unprocessed versus ultra-processed foods on humans in the journal Cell Metabolism. The research team recruited 10 male and 10 female volunteers who stayed at the NIH Clinical Center for 28 days.Half of the participants ate ultra-processed food for the first 2 weeks while the others received unprocessed foods. After the 2-week period, the groups switched, allowing each participant to eat both the ultra-processed food and the unprocessed food for 2 weeks.Speed might be the problemThere are several reasons that Hall and his colleagues think may have led the volunteers in the ultra-processed study group to put on weight.Although the study participants rated the pleasantness and familiarity of the diets as equal, they ate significantly faster in the ultra-processed group. In fact, they consumed an extra 17 calories, or 7.4 grams of food per minute, than their counterparts in the unprocessed food group.«There may be something about the textural or sensory properties of the food that made them eat more quickly,» Hall comments. «If you›re eating very quickly, perhaps you›re not giving your gastrointestinal tract enough time to signal to your brain that you›re full. When this happens, you might easily overeat.»Despite a close match in the macronutrient composition of both diets, the unprocessed diet contained slightly more protein. «It could be that people ate more because they were trying to reach certain protein targets,» Hall comments.Yet the team found that the ultra-processed food group actually consumed more carbohydrates and fat than the unprocessed food group, but not protein. Finally, the meals in the ultra-processed group had a higher energy density than in the unprocessed group, which Hall proposes «likely contributed to the observed excess energy intake.»Are ultra-processed foods a social problem? The authors identify several limitations in their study, which include that «the inpatient environment of the metabolic ward makes it difficult to generalize our results to free-living conditions.»They also acknowledge that they did not take into consideration how cost, convenience, and skill influence consumers to choose ultra-processed over unprocessed foods.«Ultra-processed foods contribute to more than half the calories consumed in the USA, and they are cheap and convenient options,» Hall commented to MNT.«So, I think it may be difficult to substantially reduce consumption of ultra-processed foods,» he continued, «especially for people in lower socioeconomic brackets who may not have the time, skill, equipment, or resources to purchase and safely store unprocessed food ingredients and then plan and safely prepare tasty, unprocessed meals.»In the paper, Hall concludes, «However, policies that discourage consumption of ultra-processed foods should be sensitive to the time, skill, expense, and effort required to prepare meals from minimally processed foods — resources that are often in short supply for those who are not members of the upper socioeconomic classes.»He is not the first to suggest a connection between socioeconomics and food choices.A recent, large-scale study in the journal Nature, suggests that in high-income countries, such as the U.S., rural populations are putting on weight faster than their city counterparts. The authors in that study comment that this may, in part, be due to «economic and social disadvantage, including lower education and income, lower availability, and higher price of health[ful] and fresh foods.»

After Scorching Europe, Heat Wave Is Poised to Melt Greenland

While fungal diseases have devastated many animal and plant species, humans and other mammals have

mostly been spared. That’s probably because mammals have body temperatures too warm for most fungi to replicate as well as powerful immune systems. But climate change may be challenging those defenses, bringing new fungal threats to human health, a microbiologist warns. From 2012 to 2015, pathogenic versions of the fungus Candida auris arose independently in Africa, Asia and South America. The versions are from the same species, yet they are genetically distinct, so the spread across continents couldn’t have been

caused by infected travelers, says Arturo Casadevall of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.Instead, each continents’ C. auris may have become tolerant of the average normal body temperature of humans — about 37° Celsius — because the fungi acclimated to warming in the environment caused by climate change, Casadevall and colleagues argue. If this hypothesis turns out to be true, C. auris “may be the first example of a new fungal disease emerging from climate change” that poses a risk to humans, the researchers report online July 23 in mBio.

— means that Greenland›s accumulated ice is draining away at an unprecedented rate, Moon said.«Maintaining this rapid ice loss over many years decreases the stability of Greenland and makes significant ice loss — and large associated sea level rise — more likely,» she said. However, it›s not too late for people to mitigate the worst-case scenario for Greenland›s ice by dialing back the greenhouse gas emissions that are fueling human-caused climate change, Moon said.«Our collective actions will play a major role in determining how much and how quickly ice is lost from Greenland, and how severe the associated impacts will be,» she said.

Why carry a dedicated camera around these days when your phone can take care of most moment capture needs? Well, smartphone camera sensors are on the small side, and you have to make do with the lenses provided. Chinese photographic equipment maker Yongnuo has revealed the YN450, a smartphone-like mirrorless camera that runs Android and is compatible with Canon camera lenses. The YN450 will run Android 7.1 and have Qualcomm octa-core

processing brains supported by 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. There›ll be built-in Wi-Fi and support for 3G/4G mobile data, too.

Photographers can make use of an 8 megapixel camera out front but Canon›s EF camera lenses can be mounted to the device›s body to feed its 16 megapixel Panasonic MFT CMOS sensor, with user interfacing taking place on a smartphone-like 5-inch Full HD multi-touch display.

Yongnuo reckons that the YN450 is capable of recording 4K video at 30 frames per second, has dual microphones, GPS, an LED flash module and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The revealed specs round out with RAW image support and a 4,000 mAh battery.

No pricing or availability information has been released for the YN450 camera at this time.

A photo editing app has introduced a few new wrinkles to the faces of celebrities — and to the ongoing discussion around personal digital security.FaceApp, a more than 2-year-old app created by a Russia-based developer, has seen a recent spike in use due to some celebrities and influencers taking part in the “FaceApp Challenge.”The app has a host of image-altering features such as adding a smile or appearing to change a person’s gender. Those taking part in the challenge are using the app to make themselves appear elderly, giving fans a preview of what their favorite athletes or celebrities would look like once they become senior citizens.

The recent spike in traffic to FaceApp has also given way to memes about certain famous faces who never seem to age, like the actors Paul Rudd and John Stamos.

But the sudden popularity of the app has also triggered growing concerns about how apps use the data and images supplied by users, particularly those that are owned or operated outside the U.S. One such concern for FaceApp centered on whether the app could access user photos without permission. Researchers found that those concerns were unfounded.

Despite the exoneration, security experts have mixed feelings about the app. They said it isn’t likely the app is stealing entire camera rolls of photos from its users, but added FaceApp is not completely risk free.

The Democratic National Committee felt the app posed enough of a risk to send an alert to its party’s presidential campaigns on Wednesday, warning against using the app that was “developed by Russians,” according to a source familiar with the alert who was not authorized to speak publicly. The warning was first reported by CNN.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., also sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, asking the agencies to investigate the app.

Schumer wrote that he has “serious concerns regarding both the protection of the data that is being aggregated as well as whether users are aware of who may have access to it.”

Justin Brookman, director of privacy and tech policy at Consumer Reports, said the app’s user agreement should concern its fans.

“I would be cautious about uploading sensitive data to this company that does not take privacy very seriously, but also reserves broad rights to do whatever they want with your pictures,” said Brookman, a former policy director for the Federal Trade Commission’s Office of Technology Research and Investigation.

Brookman said that FaceApp’s privacy policy allows the company to do whatever it pleases with photos uploaded to its server, and the app’s terms of use gives the company broad license to use the photos as it sees fit.
