Personal Development Plan
Background
Upon graduation, I intend to prepare a personal development plan for my career. A major aim of my
personal development plan is to obtain a professional management position in a business firm. This paper
will use the S.M.A.R.T. model and SWOT analysis to make a detailed analysis of my career aspirations,
finding out if I have developed the relevant job-specific and career management skills necessary for this
goal.
Self-introduction
I am a theory Y person. Theory Y was proposed by a psychologist who suggested an individuals
characteristic is self-controlled, self-motivated and ambitious. It is believed that a person who works in an
organization would view his work as natural. As a theory Y person, I can learn from mistakes, accept
responsibility and exercise self-direction which will allow me to achieve my specific goals.
Career Objectives
I would like to achieve a professional management position at a business organization. I will aim to
reinforce my interpersonal skills with team members and subordinates and learn about decentralization
and organizational development theories which I believe are essential for this job. I think the various
responsibilities of being a management are very attractive and suitable for me, fulfilling my long-term
career aspirations.
S.M.A.R.T. goal analysis
Implementing "Specific" objectives
My short-term goal is to find a job as a proficient HR manager. I want to give the employees a bright and
explicit description of job expectations. My long-term goal is to help employees develop their careers and
achieve any long term organization goals.

The specific objectives are "Measurable"
The objectives I have set to become a professional manager or improving company performance are all
very ambiguous and I believe it is necessary to set a more quantifiable goal. Therefore as a short-term
goal I would like to become a proficient HR manager with a salary around $10,000 to $12,000.
Moreover I would aim to design a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) according to the situation of
the company as a long term goal. For example, I might set indicators of increasing the total sales revenue
from $500,000 to $1,000,000 in the Christmas period and limit staff turnover ratios to less than 5% per
year according to the business performance.
The goals are "Attainable"
In the short-term, I will apply my communication and verbal skills to the HR management position. As
for my long term aim I will use my interpersonal skills to fully understand employees' wants and needs to
fulfill my responsibilities. The understanding of these factors will benefit in maintaining employee loyalty
and morale towards the company which are important factors in contributing to the companys success.
The objectives will come true because it is "Realistic"
I believe my successful completion of various components of the business degree programme is a good
indicator of my ability in completing basic HR management tasks. Moreover I am a good listener and
have excellent interpersonal skills, giving me confidence in achieving the objectives I have set.
The particular objectives have specific "Timeline"
I will find a job related to HR management before November 2012 after graduation; while I will aim to
achieve my long-term goal by December 2015 giving me a time limit of approximately three years.

Classroom experiences
Furthermore, I have recently learned about a significant aspect from class that would help me achieve my
career goal, so-called IQ and EQ. In comparison, EQ will have a greater importance in the growth of my
career. So, firstly I think I should recognize my emotions and distinguish between feelings and behaviors.
Secondly, I need to exercise emotional self-control when confronted with work stress or unmanageable
schedules. Although only by having a good intelligence will likely get me a job, I believe self-motivation
and emotional management will lead me to a better life and better career.
Life experiences
Moreover, although I proposed one of my personalities is ambitious, I understand everything must be
done step by step. Therefore, I joined a course in human sketching and flower arrangement last summer.
These activities have given me good training in emotional intelligence, this result in my temperament has
improved and my personal development has furthered.
Developed job-specific skills
I have acquired a range of skills required for HR management work. This includes training myself to have
good judgment in analyzing employee character allowing me to put the right employee in the right place
at the right time. Besides, excellent HR professionals must have exceptional interpersonal skills to assist
in the process of employee training to contribute to the company effectively. I am confident that thought
my years of study in this program I have learn the necessary skills of HR management required to achieve
my career goal.
Developed career management skills
During my university career I have acquired many useful career management skills. These include
self-awareness, ability to pinpoint personal strengths and weaknesses and self-identification and
motivation. These are all necessary skills to adapt to the ever-changing world of business. For example,

understanding personal strengths of employees can help them to better plan their career development and
self-confidence which will lead to greater job satisfaction. Moreover, self-motivation will lead to a greater
job satisfaction and enrichment to other areas of my life including achievement, happiness and feeling of
success.
S.W.O.T. analysis
Strength
As stated in the beginning of this paper I am a theory Y person which suggests I am a self-controlled,
self-motivated and high requirement individual. I always seek to accept greater responsibilities which
allow me to obtain better results in achievements.
Weakness
However, my weakness may also lie in the fact that I aim for high achievements, increasing the pressure
to any teammates I work with creating a dissatisfactory working process. Therefore I need to modulate
myself to maintain good teamwork with colleagues.
Threat
On the other hand, there are many other factors that will hinder me achievement to my objectives. For
example, a change in the education system will increase the entry requirements to the HR profession of
Hong Kong.
Opportunity
Therefore, if such a situation does happen I will upgrade my working skills accordingly by studying
part-time in an MBA programme after graduation, which will greatly enhance my opportunities in
achieving my career goal.

Conclusion
In conclusion, although many aspects of my career aspirations can be analyzed through the use of
S.M.A.R.T. and S.W.O.T. analysis, I am still facing changes and threats I cannot control. To encounter
these changes I need to make adjustments to my attitude of perfectionism and reflect on my weaknesses.
It is through this reflection process that I can recognize my weaknesses and continue to learn, and
increase my confidence and capability in accomplishing my long-term goal.
