2018 ANNUAL REPORT

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEEric L. Richards, President & CEO

A sort of lovely yet heartbreaking line by one of the classics, Tennyson. While we certainly face more happiness than sorrow here at Cancer Support Community Central Indiana, I think we sometimes focus so much on all the great things that happen to folks that we fail to adequately recognize and help continue the legacy and memory of those whose outcome was not as happy in the traditional sense. This might seem like a gloomy or even odd opening sentence of an annual report but I ask you to stick with me for a second. You see, one of the things we do in the non-profit world is constantly tell the happy stories, the stories with "fairytale endings," those where the good guy or gal win and those that make us smile not cry tears of pain and sorrow. It is certainly important to tell the stories of impact.

But sometimes, in the world of cancer, the world those who walk through our front doors face, the ending isn't one we necessarily want to read about or even think about----because it ends in loss. However, while sad to experience and think about losing loved ones, many of us are privy to amazing things----things that never would have happened had we not loved at all. Those incredibly brave souls whose journey was cut shorter than anyone wanted, have made all those around them, stronger and richer as human beings. The people in his or her support group, yoga class, cooking class, at Supper Club or listening to him or her advocate on behalf of the so many that have no voice at all are all better off.

While we list the amazing supporters here whom allow us to inch closer and closer to ensuring NO ONE FACES CANCER ALONE here in central Indiana, I am taking space this year to remember incredible people, mothers and advocates like Erica Stum, Melissa Wilson and Yolanda Wright. This edition of The Companion and Annual Report is dedicated to these incredible participants and others we lost, but got the chance to love, in 2018. It's also dedicated to the people who walked side by side with these individuals to provide love, comfort and hope. And last but not least, the edition is dedicated to those listed below who allow us to offer our FREE direct services for more than 6,000 unique individuals annually. Thank you for allowing us to serve our community and thank you for loving us and what we do.

With gratitude,

Eric RichardsPresident & CEO

"Tis' better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all."- Alfred Lord Tennyson
