The problem

You need to analyse a big file of Compensation data. You want to know who are the 5 lowest paid of employees with the title of manager.
The issue : titles are all over the place, not specifically tied to specific grades or other criteria and usually contain words before and after “manager” so you can’t use a straightforward alphabetical sort.
You don’t want to sort manually and need a way to quickly perform the analysis
The solution

Use conditional formatting to identify the employees with a manager title.
Then use sorting to list the lowest paid managers.
Identify all managers in the file
Round 1

Select all cells on the file, Conditional formatting > highlight cell rules > text that contains

Type in the text you want to identify and chose the colour and style they will show in the file

Here is the result : all managers are now in green and easy to identify

Sort the file to have lowest paid managers with less than 2 years tenure at the top
Round 2

Select all cells > Sort and filter > Custom sort > Select “My data has headers”

Think of how to apply your sorting

Based on the result you want, you need to have :1. The managers at the top of the file2. Within that group, the lowest paid at the
top You need to apply the same order in your
sorting
Select job title as the first sorting criteria > sort on the cell colour > select the colour of managers > on top

Add a level > sort by current basic > on values > smallest to largest

End result : the 5 lowest paid managers are at the top of the file
