HEADMASTER’S REPORT

This year Claremont Primary School celebrated its 118th year of existence.

It has not been an easy calendar year for our educators and learners to

remain focused throughout the year – with the momentous occasion of the

Soccer World Cup resulting in a shorter 2nd term, and the Public Sector

Strike in the 3rd term affecting the travel arrangements for many of our

learners. Nevertheless, we have “soldiered – on” and have successfully

completed the academic year. I would like to thank all parents who have

perennially supported your child and the school. At Claremont Primary School

we have a committed staff who continually strives to provide a rich

educational experience for our children. I would also like to thank all our

non-teaching or support staff for providing a high level of service to the

school.

As many of you had observed at our Annual Awards ceremonies, our learners

have achieved across the spectrum of the educational experience on the

Academic- as well as the Sporting and Cultural fronts. This year we saw the

10th learner in the past 3 years to receive a full scholarship to prestigious

high schools in Cape Town. Congratulations to :

1. Gabriel Chinyowa : St. Josephs

2. Snalo Mkubukeli : Westerford High

3. Chelsea Spaans : Wynberg Girls

On the sporting front, a special word of congratulations to Mpho Bango in

Grade 6, who was awarded with provincial colours for Squash this year.

We are indeed grateful to have the continued support and patronage of our

parents and well-wishers. I wish to place on record our appreciation to all

members of the School Governing Body as well as all parent volunteers who

have served at our various functions and events throughout the year.

Thank you also to the following organisations for continuing with your

partnerships with the school in order to enrich the educational experience

of our learners : The Shine Centre, Help2Read , The Future Factory, KFT

Soccer Academy, and Woolworths.

Our partnership with Shine has benefited the school by receiving more

patronage from the community. Thank you to Claremont Rotary for the

donation of R 20 000 worth of readers for our Foundation Phase learners.

Thank you also to Woolworths Food Store in Palmyra Junction for selecting

our school as your community partner and donating R 10 000 to the school on

the occasion of your official opening.

Page 5: 2 - Claremont Primary School

5

I also wish to place on record our appreciation to the Western Cape

Education Department and Khanya for agreeing to set up a new Computer

Lab at our school. Work has begun, and I have received the good news that

the school will not need to contribute towards the bill totalling just over R

450 000.

STAFF NEWS :

On the 1st of April, our HOD at the time Mrs. Portia Smit was promoted into

the department to serve as a Curriculum Advisor. While her loss has been

felt at the school, I am certain that she is serving the greater educational

fraternity well. This year we welcomed a number of new members of staff :

Ms. Masilo and Ms. Benjamin ( Grade R Assistants ), Ms. Wonfor (Grade 1),

Mrs. Esterhuizen (Grade 6), Ms. Mitrani and then Mrs. Pillay (Grade 3), Mr.

Broodryk (Grade 5), Mrs. Albertyn (Unit Class), Mr. Godongwana (Dance),

Ms. Peyi (isiXhosa), and support staff members Mr. Lindeboom and Ms.

Mbandezelo.

Sadly, during the course of 2010, we have and will be saying goodbye to the

following members of staff :

1. Mrs. Ryan : took up a teaching post in the middle east

2. Mrs. Pillay, Mr. Broodryk and Mrs. Esterhuizen : end of contracts

3. Mrs. Paulsen and Ms. Wonfor : taking up posts at other schools

On behalf of Claremont Primary School, I would like to thank you all for the

service you have rendered to the school, and wish you well for the future.

I would like to wish every member of the CPS staff and learners well as they

embark on a very well-deserved vacation soon. To our Grade 7 learners, I

wish you all the best as you venture into high school next year. I trust that

you remember all the good that you have had the privilege of receiving from

your educators in the years that you have spent at CPS. Remember, always

uphold the proud tradition of CPS and carry yourselves with dignity and

respect at all times.

I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or your heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half the things you do you might as well turn over to me, I am easily managed; you must merely be firm with me.

Page 6: 2 - Claremont Primary School

6

Show me exactly how you want something done, And after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great individuals And alas, of all failures as well. Those who are great I have made great Those who are failures I have made failures. I am not a machine, Though I work with all the precision of a machine Plus the intelligence of a human being. You may run me for profit or run me for ruin; It makes no difference to me. Take me, train me, be firm with me, And I will put the world at your feet Be easy with me, and I will destroy you. Who am I? I am habit! ( Author unknown )

Happy holidays and be safe. Let’s look forward to another successful year at

Claremont Primary School.

Yours in education

MR. E. REDDY

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

Good day all,

I once again address you with "Pride" to end a very good year at Claremont

Primary School.

I do realise that there are parents within our family who are still facing

Financial Challenges, however I would like to appeal to those who are still

owing outstanding school fees to limit their Festive Spending and reflect on

the importance of their commitments to pay school fees.

We had a Whole School Evaluation done as recently as October this year

and I would like to encourage every-one to peruse the outcome as this is an

independent assessment done in the interest of all concerned. I have to

acknowledge that we can be proud of our school and the final outcome.

Special thanks to all concerned:

Mr. E Reddy - Principal - well done on your School management.

Educators - Your personal contribution to education and the outcomes we

can see in the Learner's results and Litnum Assessments are admirable.

Learners - Stay focused on your Goals and keep up the good results, well

done! Congratulations on all the recent Awards achieved.

Parents - We need to find time in our busy schedules to assist with reading

and home-work, let's not have to look back and say "I should have!".

Support Staff - Thank you for all your hard work during 2010, it reflects in

the school appearance.

To all our support teams, we appreciate your ongoing contribution towards

the education of our children. To "Shine" ; "Help 2 Read" and "Future

Factory", only to mention a few, and all the other education support groups,

please accept my sincere appreciation, keep up the good work!

I'm enthusiastic about the year ahead - 2011 - and would like to appeal to all

concerned, to carry out their same duties with "Vigor and Pride".

Lastly to all my colleagues who offer their personal time for Governing Body

Duties and the "Patient Spouse's", we cannot function without your ongoing

support, "Thank You!"

I would like to encourage every-one to enjoy their Holiday Break and would

like to wish every-one a Blessed Festive Season.

Regards,

Jerome Zill

CHOIR

The choir of Claremont Primary School once again had a full and fruitful year. Other than

signing at end-of-term assemblies and other school-related events, the choir also

participated in various choir workshops and concerts.

In May, a few selected choristers attended a day workshop held at St George’s Grammar

School in Mowbray. This event was directed by Dr Barry Smith, who is a well-known choral

director in Cape Town. Choirs from St Cyprian’s School, Bergvliet Primary and the host

school’s choir were amongst the schools participating.

In October, we were fortunate enough to be invited to participate in a concert in Cape Town

City Hall to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of St Paul’s Primary, Bo-Kaap. It was

a very successful evening and a wonderful experience for the choristers. A big thank you to

all the parents who supported us on that evening.

Our duties at school include singing at our annual awards ceremony. The choir excelled

themselves by singing one piece that illustrated the indigenous rhythms of our country.

Our final event for 2010 is singing for our annual Christmas Choral. This is always a very

exciting time for all learners, as they dress up in their best Christmas-themed outfits, and

join the choir in singing well-known Christmas Carols.

2010 has certainly been an exciting year for the choir, and we hope to continue building on

this tradition in 2011.

EXTRA- MURAL ACTIVITIES

ATHLETICS

Our Inter-house Athletics took place on the 24th March 2010. All the students came

prepared and they were excited about the day’s events. We were blessed with a lovely cool

day and this was up the alley for our more serious athletes.

The students of Claremont Primary showed real sportsmanship when they all cheered and

encouraged Thabo M to finish his race. That was amazing!

The house captains were a great help to the teachers by ensuring that the students

remained in their houses and getting the athletes ready for their races. Thank you for a job

well done! Their names are as follows:

St Ledger: Ganor Dahl

Siyanda Stemela

Palmyra: Zandiswa Gungu

Musa Mehlomakhulu

Victoria: Chelsea Spaans

Thabo Mapitiza

St Ledger was the overall winner for 2010 with the winning points of 202, Palmyra was

second with 185 points and Victoria third with 172 points. Well done to the houses.

A sincere thanks to all the parents who supported us by attending this fantastic event with

their children. Special thanks to the teachers and staff for their dedication in making the

day a great success.

NETBALL

Coaches: Ms Wonfor,Mrs.J. Paulsen, Mrs.D. Albertyn, Mrs.E.Gouws, Mrs.B.Esterhuizen

The girls were very enthusiastic but the term was so short that they didn’t really get to

show off their talent. They played well nonetheless. We played against Greenfield Girls. The

U/13 girls lost by 2 points. Well done for playing so splendidly. All of the girls showed great

sportsmanship and Claremont Primary can really hold their heads up high.

Inter-house netball was held on the twenty-first of September 2010. We had a lovely cool

day. Palmyra took first position, Victoria second and St Ledger third. The highlight of the

day was when the U/13 team played against the teachers. We played a very competitive

game. Lots of fun and laughter was enjoyed by all. The teachers proved once again that they

are an unbeatable force. Well done teachers!

A special thank you to the coaches, for all your hard work in preparing the netball players.

CROSS COUNTRY

The annual Inter-house cross country event too place on the 22 September 2010.

It was a beautiful sunny day.

Foundation Phase ran their races early in the morning when it was still cool .All the students were

escorted to Westwood where they were placed in their appropriate age groups. All of the runners

started off very enthusiastically but experienced some fatigue as the race progressed.

Mrs Coert and Mrs Kiestnasami recorded the results as the runners entered Westwood. Thank you to

Mr Broodryk for setting the kids off as well as keeping the crowd under control.

Thank you to all the marshals, Ms Williams and the crew from Future Factory who did their bit to

ensure that the learners were safe while running the course.

The results were as follows: Palmyra 724 points, St Ledger 688 points and Victoria 384 points. Well

done to all the participants.

SOFT BALL REPORT We started off the season with many enthusiastic new comers to the game of softball. I

was fortunate to have Mrs. Brey assist me and she took care of the important part of any

sport, the warm-up session, before the skills training. We concentrated mainly on the basic

rules of softball because of the new learners and we also did lots of batting and pitching

drills. This year we had many eager “big hitters” in the Grade 7 boys and they soon learnt

that the game was not all about hitting that all important homerun, but about also

concentrating on the basic skill of getting to first base. We also discovered some hidden

talent amongst some learners with some aspiring young softballers in our midst.

The second part of our season was a very short one and I was happy to be assisted by Mrs.

Albertyn. We managed to focus a lot more on the game and played many more matches than

we did in the first part of the season. These matches were played against each other with

well established teams, where learners were able to put the skills they learnt into practise.

The matches were very competitive, but lots of fun and we shared many laughs on and off

the field. The highlight of the season was once again the Interhouse Softball competition.

We were lucky enough to once again have a professional national softball coach and umpire,

umpire our games. Although he was very strict in implementing the rules, learners learnt a

lot from their games and lots of fun was had by all. Well done to Palmyra, who once again

was crowned the winners. I would like to say a special thank you to Mrs. Brey and Mrs.

Albertyn for all their assistance this year as well as to the many eager learners who so

faithfully attended all the training sessions. I would like to wish all Claremont Softballers

well and may they remain dedicated to the sport and may softball at CPS continue to grow

from strength to strength in years to come.

BALL SKILLS REPORT

Ball skills for Grade 1 and 2 learners took place once a week in the school hall. Learner’s

always displayed great enthusiasm and classes were always well attended. This year we had

an extra Grade 1 class and because of this, we had an extra ball skills educator. I had the

pleasure of doing ball skills with the Grade 1 Green and Yellow classes while the Grade 2

class had 3 different educators teaching them this year. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd terms were

taught by Mrs. Hlomo and Miss. Masilo respectively and the 4th term Miss. Benjamin brought

her dancing skills to the class. We are happy to say that the Grade 2 learners had an array

of different skills taught to them by these educators and they thoroughly enjoyed the

variety of each session.

In Grade 1 we concentrated mostly on working together and being part of a team. We

mainly focused on improving our hand and foot-eye co-ordination as well as working our big

and small (gross and fine motor) muscles during our varied activities. T-ball skills were also

introduced and the learners enjoyed playing little matches against each other. We also

learnt that it was not always about winning, but about having fun too and that there could

only be one winner, which was a lesson many of the little ones struggled to master. In the

end good sportsmanship was learnt and displayed when the winner was always applauded and

congratulated by their classmates.

Playing squash at Villagers Squash Grounds has been an exciting and amazing

time. While Siyoli, our coach, has been touring the country, we had

Nomfundo to train us. We participated in some tournaments on Saturdays

and some on Fridays. We had the joy of playing and training with Rosmead

Primary and Islamia Primary. There were a few of us who qualified for

Western Province Squash team try-outs. The following people tried out :

Chelsea Spaans, Mpho Bango, and Sbongile Martin. We were all extremely

excited that one of our Squash squad made it to the Western Province

Squash team. Cogratulations to Mpho Bango. Although some of us will be

leaving squash we hope that the squash team spirit continues at CPS.

DANCE

The advanced class is the performing privileged dance group of our school

that involve learners who show prospective and special attention to dance.

These learners are chosen from grade 4 – 7 to take dance for 2 hours in a

week, which gives them an extended opportunity, to develop their

choreographic interest and polish their contemporary dance technique to

stand out on all those learners who take dance for 1 hour a week. The

highlights for this year were performances in the end of term School

Assemblies, School Fundraising Events, and 2010 School Arts Festival held

at Artscape Theatre. We also had performance by Jazzart Theatre. The

dancers from Claremont Primary are exploring to express our South African

heritage by choosing relevant topics which are burning issues concerning

children, education and environment.

MEMORIES

AT CLAREMONT PRIMARY SCHOOL

My first year at Claremont Primary School was in 2002 Grade R. My

teachers’ name was Mrs. Anderson. She was the funniest and nicest

teacher. I then went on to Grade 1 to Mrs. Scholtz class. Mrs. Scholtz

loved the children and allowed us to dress up as our favourite alphabet

letter.

Mrs. Gouws loved to sing. I still remember the song Octopus. Mrs. Gill was

my Grade 2 teacher. She used to shout at us but at the same time she was

sweet and gentle. Then Mrs. Jacobs in 2005, the scariest teacher.

If you did something wrong believe me, you were going to regret it. She was

very nice. She loved to put on the radio and also let us listen to Celine Dion.

Then I had Mrs. Albertyn in 2006. She loved to talk and she still does. She

taught me to play netball very well. Mrs. Albertyn loved to eat sweets in

class. She made me very hungry. I grew up at Claremont Primary with Mrs.

Page 87: 2 - Claremont Primary School

87

Albertyn in Grade 4 and again in the Unit class. But when I go to high school

she won’t be there.

Mrs. Brey is a calm lady. She loved to tell us stories in Grade 7.

I was very proud to be chosen as a student leader at CPS. It made me very

happy.

Claremont Primary will always have a place in my heart.
