Irma Stern’s ‘Arab Priest’: Image and Context | Opens 24 April 2019Irma Stern’s Arab Priest (1945) is today regarded as one of South Africa’s most important treasures. The painting returns on loan to the Iziko South African National Gallery from the Orientalist Museum in Qatar for this small, ‘special focus’ exhibition, which examines it in the context of Stern’s ‘Zanzibar period’ and colonial perceptions in South African painting of the 1940s, as well as the work’s more recent ‘reframing’ as an example of ‘Orientalist’ art.Enquiries: Hayden Proud, Tel. 021 481 3965 or email [email protected]

Not the Usual Suspects | Until 5 May 2019The exhibition is a tribute to the Market Photo Workshop (MPW), a photography training institution in Johannesburg, founded by Gillian Cargill and the late David Goldblatt in 1989. This collaborative project brings together the archives of the MPW with the private archives (and memories) of “alumni”. It includes an inter-generational group of more than 30 artists – trainers, mentors and project managers associated with the MPW, from its inception to the present. Enquiries: Ingrid Masondo, Tel. 021 481 3956 or email [email protected]

David Koloane – Retrospective | Opens 30 May 2019Presented in association with the Goodman Gallery, this exhibition is a celebration of the artistic journey and the seminal contributions of veteran Johannesburg-based artist David Koloane, who turned 80 last year. The changing sociopolitical landscape of South Africa – from the apartheid era to the present – is reflected not only in his own work, but also in his sterling promotion and nurturing of the work of many disadvantaged younger artists.Enquiries: Hayden Proud, Tel. 021 481 3965 or email [email protected]

Filling in the Gaps | Until October 2019Filling in the Gaps foregrounds recent acquisitions of the Permanent Collection of the Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG) since 2014. It features important historical acquisitions of artworks by Peter Clarke, Ephraim Ngatane, Moses Tladi and John Koenakeefe Mohl, which all assist in building a national collection that is more representative of the overlooked and marginalised artists of the past. It also showcases works by contemporary, cutting-edge artists like Lerato Shadi, Sethembile Msezane, Mongezi Ncaphayi and Steven Cohen. The exhibition highlights the ISANG’s commitment to rewriting our art history, and building a resource of national pride.Enquiries: Andrea Lewis, email [email protected]

Tribute | Until December 2019Tribute is an active display where learners and teachers can interact with artworks especially chosen to support their classroom practice. All artworks on show are selected from the Iziko South African National Gallery’s Permanent Collection. Interaction with the original works stimulates a dynamic learning situation in which learners are able to find parallels with their own lives and locate themselves within the trajectory of South African history. Tribute aims to facilitate an active engagement between artists, art educators, art historians and curators, with the aim of stimulating learning, respect, enjoyment and fresh visual expression.Enquiries: Yentl Kohler, Tel. 021 481 3961 or email [email protected]

Aluta Continua! | Opens mid-June 2019This multi-media exhibition zooms in on the Western Cape chapter of the 1976 student uprisings, and particularly the response from students, learners, and youth across the province after the killing and arrest of school children in Soweto. The brutal June 16th killings immediately sparked solidarity across the country, signaling a shift in resistance politics that would begin to mark the end of apartheid. The 11 August 1976 killing of school children from Langa, Nyanga and Gugulethu is marked as a turning point in the resistance and liberation narratives of the Western Cape, and was a catalyst for widespread, organised resistance campaigns.Enquiries: Lynn Abrahams, Tel. 021 467 7203 or email [email protected]

Kemet: Life in ancient Egypt | CurrentOur exhibition of Egyptian artefacts recently got a new lease on life – by way of an upgrade, and the installation of an Augmented Reality (AR) game developed by students of the Friends of Design: Academy of Digital Arts in Cape Town. Visitors discover more about life in ancient Egypt, following the story that unfolds when an ordinary Egyptian passes away and enters the afterlife. This is a first for the Slave Lodge, and an exciting way to learn about ancient African cultures and belief systems.Enquiries: Esther Esmyol, Tel. 021 467 7205 or email [email protected]

Unshackled History. The Wreck of the Slave Ship, São José, 1794 | CurrentThis exhibition brings into memory the wreck of the Portuguese slave ship, São José that foundered off Cape Town in 1794. It aims to tell the story of the wreck, the enslaved Africans on board, and its place in the world. Traditional artefact displays and exhibition panels tell the stories, but it also creates an interactive environment for visitors. This unique contribution to the study of the impact and legacies of the global slave trade has the potential to reshape our understanding of the past – and our inter-connectedness as a human race.Enquiries: Jaco Boshoff, Tel. 021 467 7204 or email [email protected]

Under Cover of Darkness | CurrentThe Slave Lodge, as a post-apartheid museum space has, through its exhibitions, challenged institutional narratives and brought accounts of oppression to the fore. However, the position of women within the context of the early colonial period has not been a specific focus, despite the complexities of racial and gender hierarchies within the Slave Lodge during this time that spurred the social engineering that led to apartheid. As a means to sustain attention on these aspects of our colonial inheritance, Under Cover of Darkness concentrates on the lives of women in the service of the Cape Colony – specifically Krotoa, Susanna van Bengal, and Zara van der Caab.Enquiries: Lynn Abrahams, Tel. 021 467 7203 or email [email protected]

The Effendis of 71 Wale Street Bo-Kaap | Opens 30 March 2019Mahmud Fakir Effendi contributed greatly to the Bo-Kaap community through his school and his religious teaching and writing. The history of Effendi and his descendants is connected to the history of the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, and in this exhibition, his and his family’s story is told for the first time within the museum – the very space in which they lived. Come and experience their stories of joy and also great pain when they were forcibly removed in 1978, shortly before the house was converted to the Bo-Kaap Museum.Enquiries: Shanaaz Galant, Tel. 021 467 7214 or email [email protected]

Wine of Exile | Cloete Room in the Cloete Wine Cellar | Until 21 June 2019Napoleon Bonaparte appreciated good wine, and while in exile on St Helena Island (1815–1821), he first became familiar with and grew fond of Constantia wine. This wine, produced in the Cloete Wine Cellar, became his wine of choice on the island. On exhibition is a wine cooler, wine glasses and a decanter from St Helena, a glass made for him to use on campaigns, as well as decanters and wine glasses from the Iziko collection.Enquiries: Thys van der Merwe, Tel. 021 467 7201 or email [email protected]

Rethinking the William Fehr Collection | CurrentDr William Fehr (1892–1968) was a Cape Town based businessman with a passion for collecting historical art and objects. The collection went on public display at the Castle during the 1950s, and portrays aspects of South Africa’s painful colonial past – including maps, portraits, and depictions of historical events, animals and flowers. As custodian of the collection today, we have begun to explore contemporary issues and multiple narratives, with the aim of critically reinterpreting this important historical archive.Enquiries: Esther Esmyol, Tel. 021 467 7205 or email [email protected]

Origins of Early Sapiens Behaviour | Opens 18 April 2019Explore a multi-media compilation of archaeological artefacts recovered from three archaeological sites occupied by the ancestors of us all, Homo sapiens, around 120,000 years ago, during a period known as the Middle Stone Age. This exhibition showcases 25 years of archaeological research in the southern Cape that was conducted by Prof. Christopher Henshilwood and the research team at Blombos Cave and Klipdrift Shelter. The exhibition is designed to showcase modern human origins and innovations, and illustrates the unique archaeological discoveries made at these coastal sites.Enquiries: Dr Thalassa Matthews, Tel. 021 481 3877 or email [email protected]

Tata Madiba: Father of our Democracy, Father of our Nation | Current2018 was the year of Nelson Mandela’s centenary, and we are excited for you to rediscover our upgraded exhibition using Erhardt Thiel’s iMadiba. iMadiba is a participatory art project and a facilitator of dialogue, memory, reflection and forward thinking endorsed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Content and objects aim to stimulate conversation about Mandela’s life, struggles and extraordinary contribution to the protection of South Africa’s rich biodiversity – including the many species named after him, and those he and his fellow prisoners may have encountered on Robben Island.Enquiries: Charlene Janion-Scheepers, Tel. 021 481 3820 or email [email protected]

Buzz About Honey Bees and Pollination | CurrentYou can thank a pollinator for one out of every three bites of food you eat! Since current habitat and forage resources (flowers producing nectar and pollen) for honeybees are dwindling, we need to protect and maintain bee-friendly vegetation and plant more bee-friendly plants. This exhibition showcases how important honeybees are to our survival by detailing the pollination role they play in our environment, and explains what you can do to help protect them.Enquiries: Simon van Noort, Tel. 021 481 3800 or email [email protected]

Alien Wasps | CurrentTwo predatory alien wasps found in South Africa, the European yellow jacket (Vespula germanica) and the European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) are large, social wasps constructing paper nests. They have potent venom, inflicting painful stings, and are a threat to the local economy and environment. Learn more about the potential impact these invasive species have on local ecosystems through prey competition; the honey industry (as they hunt bees); and on the wine and fruit industry through fruit feeding damage and subsequent secondary fungal infection.Enquiries: Simon van Noort, Tel. 021 481 3800 or email [email protected]
