On Friday, October 15 1965, violence broke out between two social groups. A rivalry between the hoods and over privileged. All this chaos, just to battle over who would claim the east side hangouts. The event took place At 7PM sharp, the giant fight or rumble, took place in a vacant lot, on the east side of Tulsa. The two social groups are referred to as socials or “socs” and “greasers”. Socials, referring to the rich, “stuck-up” jocks- and greasers, being the poor, hood kids. The fight was set to end all their rivalries and problems between the two groups. Each side, socs and greasers, have their own sides of town in Tulsa, socs on the west, and greasers on the east. The two greaser gangs united as one gang under Tim Shepard, and one under Darrel Curtis. These two gangs came together to fight the socials and hopefully end everything. Curtis, 21, took a step up to Paul Holden, Curtis’ old childhood friend. They were picked from each group to throw the first punch. The silence between the two social groups grew heavier. Curtis turned to see Dallas Winston, a gang member who was just released from the hospital. Holden swung as Curtis was distracted by the presence of Winston. “With all the violence going on, it was normal for fights like these to escalate quickly.” An eyewitness said. The fight had restrictions as to whether they could use weapons or not. It was played somewhat fair and weapons were prohibited. As the fight begun, both sides were beating each other to gain the east hangouts. As punches were thrown left and right, people were being slugged and beat to the floor. “They’re running!” An Unidentified voice yelled joyfully. Those were the words that signaled the end of the controversy. The socials ran from the scene, settling the fact that the east side wouldn’t be invaded by socials anymore. There were many participants in the fight, but not all were named and some fled after the fight as well. The instigators and main participants included Darrel Curtis, and younger brothers, Ponyboy Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, Dallas Winston, Keith Mathews, Tim Shepard, Steve Randle, and Paul Holden. “I’m sick of it because it doesn’t do any good. You can’t win, I would’ve fought if I thought It’d do any good,” Randy Adderson, good friend of the late Bob Sheldon stated. Is Randy right? Did the violence end it once and for all?
