Binary Compounds

• A compound with only 2 different elements

Binary Bases

• They have OH- in their formula or hydroxide in their name.

Exception: Ammonia (NH3)

Binary Acids

• When a hydrogen atom is covalently bonded to another

atom

• the substance is an acid when it is dissolved in water.

Ex. HF(aq) hydrofluoric acid

(aq) = aqueous = dissolved in water

Do not omit this!!

Rules for Naming Binary Acids

• 1. Write hydro as a prefix to the name of the first

element.

• 2. Add an "ic" ending to the name of the second

element.

• 3. Write the word "acid" after leaving a space.

Ex. H2S(aq) hydrosulfuric acid

Oxoacids

• Some acids that contain oxygen are called

oxoacids

• They are made of oxygen, hydrogen and some other

element, almost always a non-metal

• They have special suffixes that depend on the

number of oxygen atoms in the acid

• There is little to do but memorize them.
