FROM BEHIND THE WHEEL

F R O M M A R C T R U B E R T Y O U R T R E A S U R E RI was born in France. My father LéonTrubert was the son of French pioneerfamilies that had migrated from Franceto New Caledonia circa 1880 after Francelost the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 inWestern Europe. New Caledonia is asmall tropical island in South Pacific 1000miles east of Australia and 1000 miles

north of New Zealand. The island was discovered by the world explorer Captain Cook in the 1700. New Caledoniawas originally part of the French colonial empire in late 1800 early 1900. My grandfather on my father side wasfrom Normandy and my grandmother on my father side was from Alsace. The Alsace province is the part ofFrance that changed hand between France and Germany several times over the centuries. That makes you thinkthat the people living in Alsace at that time did not really know if they were French or German. In 1870 Alsacewas given back to Germany as part of the settlement of the Franco-Prussian war. My father was a WWI (WorldWar One) veteran who had been drafted in 1914 in New Caledonia to fight the war in France. After the war, myfather remained in France for a few years as a surveyor and married my mother Paulette Montes from Paris. Soonafter I was born my parents chose to go to New Caledonia where my father’s original family still was, thereforeNew Caledonia is where I was raised.

It is a long time ago but I sort of remember Christmas time in the island. Since the island is in the southhemisphere, Christmas is in the summer, so it is hot at that time with no snow. Anyway the island is under theTropic of Capricorn so it never snows there. Santa Claus was called the “Père Noël” for us. The story in these dayswas that he was coming by air on Christmas Eve from the north pole being parachuted to the ground from aninvisible airplane. He was bringing all the toys to be distributed to the young kids (only to the ones that had beengood, so we were told). He showed up dressed up like Santa Claus at the balcony of the major department store“Maison Barault” of Noumea, the capital of the island, addressing the crowd assembled for the event, includingme. The following morning on Christmas Day the kids would wake up at their home with the gifts in front of theChristmas tree which typically was a Norfolk pine. One time I got a little mechanical train running on tracks thatI had to assemble. Another time when I was older I got a fully tooled and functional wood working bench toywhich I treasured tremendously. I kept this bench for many years building a variety of wood projects. Later whenI had acquired more sophisticated tools I even built a little night table for my mother that she kept all her life. Iguess this was the Christmas toy that gave me the idea of becoming an engineer.

A big thank you goes out to all members who renewed their memberships, let’s keep on promoting ourclassic GMC’s. And to Jim Peugh, our web site administrator. He has done an outstanding job over the years, publishing our newsletter, our schedules and those eye-catching banners, he is truly appreciated. Anotherspecial thank you to my husband, Gene Schultz, for taking over the newsletter and bringing in a new look& introducing some new features.

At out last rally, Lillian Trubert volunteered to research the production of newGMC Pacific Cruiser jackets, and will inform us on how we can purchase one. Ourchilly members appreciate this.

We’ll see you all in 2015 – best of the holiday season to you and you know the drill, when out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see whatwas the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash and there on the drivewaywas a GMC, with a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it mustbe Saint Nick, and I heard him exclaim, Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night

RECIPE ROUNDUP

We have some talented cooks in our club and from time to time they produce and share somethinginteresting and special. These delicious items were shared at recent rallies.

BARBARA McCURTER’S CHOCOLATE SAUCEBarbara says this recipe was originally found on the box of Hershey’s Cocoa but is not shown there now.Like all good cooks, Barbara has made this recipe her own and tastes and adds so amounts given areapproximate.

3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder1 cup sugar½ cup evaporated milk (like Pet or Carnation in a can)¼ cup light Karo corn syrup½ cup butter1 teaspoon vanillaPinch of salt.

Combine sugar, cocoa evaporated milk and corn syrup together in saucepan and cook over mediumheat, stirring constantly until the mixture begins to boil. Boil for about 5 minutes to thicken. Make sureyou time it from a good rolling boil and not the first few bubbles that will persist for several minutesbeforehand. If you want really thick hot fudge sauce, you can boil for a few more minutes. Removefrom heat and stir in the salt, butter and vanilla. If made ahead reheat in microwave and then pour overice cream.

FRAN FIMBRES’ ROOT BEER SCHNAPPSEnjoy the taste of root beer fizz with a kick to it. Delicious and different asis, or will make a great adult root beer float dessert for your next party.1 large 750 bottle of Vodka, any kind, and approx. 10 root beer barrelcandies. Put the candies into the vodka and put top back on vodka. Set ina dark area for approx. 30 days. It's ready to be served by mixing w/equalparts of cold root beer soda over lots of ice, as it is best served verycold...don't add the root beer soda until you are ready to serve it.

SEMI-HOMEMADE GERMAN SOFT PRETZELSAs part of getting in the groove to enjoy the Karneval celebration, Bobbiehad us make and enjoy some of the big, chewy, salted pretzels that webuy at places like ball games and carnivals. A recipe and instruction sheetwas in our packet. It looked complicated. To make things easier for us,Bobbie had prepared the dough from scratch ahead of time so the bakersonly had to roll it out and twist it into pretzel shape. Then the pretzelswere dropped into a pot of boiling water and boiled until they floated tothe top. The boiling step is what gives the dough the signature chewytexture we love. Then they were drained, sprinkled with salt, and baked.Later we ate them dipped in the spicy and delicious German mustardBobbie provided. Fun and delicious but a lot of effort so here is an easier

“semi-homemade” version that got great reviews on the internet:Buy some good quality frozen bread dough and thaw according to directions. Pinch off pieces and rolldough out into ropes then bend into pretzel shape. Place on oiled baking sheet. Cover lightly withplastic wrap and let rise 30-45 minutes. Meanwhile bring a pot of water to a boil and add about ¼ cupof baking soda. When dough pretzels have risen, slip a few at a time into gently boiling water and boilfor about 30 seconds on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a cooling rack. Sprinklewith coarse salt. Return to oiled baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes at 375 degrees until goldenbrown. Have the mustard ready for that first delicious bite.

Thanks to Bobbie & Gene Schultz and Judy & KenBooth we had a fun-filled four days at the CanyonRV Wilderness Park in beautiful Anaheim alongsidethe historic Santa Ana River. What an amazinglybeautiful ambience showcasing our 13 GMCcoaches through the canyon of luscious old oaks, pepper, and sycamore trees that only time cancreate for us to enjoy. ….and enjoy we did! Lillian &Marc Trubert stayed in a rustic cabin on site whiletheir GMC was in for repairs. One of our newermembers, Jackie & Art Johnson, camped for thevery 1st time in their GMC! Carmella & Dick Ellsleystopped by to rejoin the Pacific Cruisers. Thursdayevening GMCers brought their usual best for a horsd’oeuvres evening at the clubhouse, beer &schnapps tasting, and German music to set themood for what was to come. Hoss was our gracious3 day rally driver and off we went to the PhoenixClub for Big Band dancing. It was so much funwatching their dance lessons and then joining in fora rockin’ time dancing to the timeless tunes of BigBand. Mornings we woke up to a yummy continentalbreakfast & listened to German music throughouteach day. Following breakfast on Friday we madepretzels, which proved to be more challenging thanexpected, but sure was fun. Pretzels were baked inour GMCs – we are a self-sufficient group. GMCershad the pleasure of being invited to Ralph & Annie’shome overlooking our campsites for a delightfulevening of enjoying each other’s company and ahome-made dinner of Ralph’s famous tri tip roastand Annie’s wonderful sausage lasagna & salad. Abig thank you to them for welcoming us into yourlovely home as we enjoyed good friends, goodfood. It was a magical evening and none of uswanted to leave. Thank goodness for Ralph & Annie– Hoss made us get in the van to go back “home”to our GMCs. Gene, fluent in German, gave us some lessons inspeaking German and some most interestinghistory as well. Basically he taught us how to party& celebrate the German traditions. We made hats

Congrats to hatmaking winners: 1st place Annie Mundia, 2nd placeCharlotte Hauge, and 3rd place Lillian Trubert. If you have never been to the German Phoenix Clubin Anaheim, everyone should go at least once. Theplace is truly spectacular with its ornatearchitecture throughout the ballroom, bar, andrestaurant with German and European ambienceand traditions that welcome you to be a part. Thisplace is in a class of its own. Our dinner here on Sat.in the beautiful fireside Garden Room was anamazing German feast buffet. And then off wewent to the Karneval mit Herz for a show &celebration to remember….comedy acts, elaboratecostumes, marching band, dancers, skits, anddancing, dancing, dancing. The 4 days flew by. We ended our rally with Bobbi’squiz and a big congrats goes to Joe Weaver inanswering all the questions. It was fun getting toknow and welcoming Jackie & Art Johnson andCarmella & David Ellsley. After the hectic pace of the recent Barn Rally, we were really looking forward to a quiet, relaxingweekend with old friends, good food, and fun events. And that's exactly what our great rally Hosts,Fran and Mike Fimbres, and co-hosts, Bobbie and Gene Schultz, provided at the Santee LakesRecreational Preserve in San Diego County! What a beautiful park with 7 surrounding lakes! Perfectvenue for biking, kayaking, hiking, fishing and relaxing!

The fun began at Happy Hour, naturally! With the Labor Dayholiday theme, the festivities included patriotic decorationsand good old picnic fun including local Craft Beer tastings, with samples being generously poured by Mike Fimbres andour illustrious President, Ralph Mundia. We loved the printeddescriptions of the various beers....interesting andinformative! Thanks, too, to Brian Tripp for contributingsome of his favorite beers for sampling, and for sharing hisvast knowledge of the Brews. The pretzel necklaces to nibbleon while sipping were deftly created by Annie Mundia andSuzie Quiring, Fran's helpful sister! What an ingenious idea!!Tons of appetizers were contributed by all....creative dips, brie with grapes, popcorn and the very popular meatballsfrom Pat and Len Novak. And YES!!! We tried our best to getthem to share their recipe for the Atomic meatballs, butwe've since learned it's a carefully guarded secret, so you'lljust have to hope to enjoy them at another rally.

The biggest surprise of the evening came from Joe and Barbara Weaver and their amazing Sno-conemachine. Such FUN to watch the block of ice become delicate shavings waiting for your favorite fruityflavor to be poured atop! So refreshing on such a warm evening...thank you so much!! Great fun! Can't forget the squirt guns waiting for us in our welcome packs.......who knew Arlene Cantrell was sucha great shot?? Suzanne Covington, she definitely got the best of you!

As if all the delectable nibbles weren't enough, dinner awaited! Hugesubmarine sandwiches, pasta and bean salads, amazingdesserts.....perfect for a traditional holiday picnic! Plus, we enjoyedsharing the evening and meeting newcomers Jerry Shelton and hisvery enthusiastic wife, Fena. Welcome!

Saturday began at the new favorite time of 9 AM....much morecivilized than 8! Another great meal of blueberry pancakes, hardboiled eggs, muffins, juices...everything needed to rev you upfor a fun day at the lakes.

The day's scheduled events included the Horseshoe competition, Fishing Derby and ice cream making.Mike Fimbre officiated the Horseshoe games with teams of Pat Novak and Suzanne Covington pairedagainst Ed Staal and Randy Bills, who enjoyed a healthy lead until the very end when Suzanne had twogreat tosses and Pat threw the winning 'ringer'....actually slinging her horseshoe around the post for thewinning point!! Well done!!

SANTEE LAKES RALLY REPORT 9/2014

Throughout the horseshoe fun in the sun, we were so envious of Bob Hooten, who definitely had theright idea and was enjoying the sparkling pool while we melted alongside in the sandpit...whew!

The Fishing Derby took place at the lake from 10 AM to 4 PM. Fishing is definitely a popular activity atSantee Lakes.....young and old alike had their favorite poles and bait, while patiently waiting for anibble or a chomp! Our contenders included Phil andJoanne Hernandez, Ralph and Annie Mundia, and Dannyand Barbara McCurter. Danny managed to snag a perfectspecimen of a catfish, which Hoss Hauge kindly agreed tohelp skin. What a catch, Danny! Congratulations!

The afternoon continued at the Clubhouse with patrioticbanners and Fran's creative table decorations being set forthe evening festivities. The fun was in full swing as GeneSchultz and Danny McCurter worked on churninghomemade ice cream for the root beer floats. Lots oflaughs ensued.....churning ice cream is not easy, but withthe help of so many....Joanne Hernandez, CharlotteHauge, Dorthy Hooten, Barbara McCurter, BobbieSchultz, and so many others, they got the job done withamazing vanilla ice cream as the end result! Perfect for theroot beer floats planned for dessert!

Another Happy Hour began with Bobbie serving herhomemade root beer schnaaps. Wow!! After aging theconcoction for 3 months, it packed quite a punch!Delicious! Such a tempting array of hors d'oevres werecontributed, that we wondered how we'd have room forthe fried chicken dinner feast planned. Not a problem aseveryone thoroughly enjoyed the chicken with all thefixin's...corn, potato salad, rolls, followed by root beerfloats, and ice cream with Barbara McCurter's fabuloushomemade chocolate sauce! Perfect menu for a LaborDay themed event!

Such a great year has passed under the leadership ofRalph Mundia and and his terrific board. Ralph has beenso generous and, as always, had gifts galore to share.Suzanne Covington was the lucky winner of his President'sgift drawing and his team also received gifts ofappreciation. A huge thanks to Ralph (and Annie) for yourhard work and leadership! The new Board was introduced and enthusiasticallywelcomed.

Page 9: 2 55 77 12-1412-14 · In the New Year, 2015, we are looking forward to three rallies. January has the Quartzite Rally with hosts Chuck & Dorris Garton and co-hosts Bob & Karen Lamey.

During the meeting, we were also introduced to First Timers Georgeand Susan Corrigan, and new members, Greg and Lisa Hose.Welcome to a fun club with super nice people!

A very special moment was shared when Phil and JoanneHernandez presented outgoing President Ralph Mundia with thebeautiful Tricolor state flag of the Kingdon of Italy, which was usedfrom 1861 thru 1946, and also as the Naval Ensign Flag of the ReginaMarina (the Royal Navy). It was gloriously adorned with the Shieldof Savoy and the Royal Crown. What a lovely way to honor Ralph'sproud Italian heritage, his honorable service to our country, and hiswonderful year at the helm of The Pacific Cruisers.

After a hectic and fun clean up job in the kitchen, several of us gathered around to enjoy Joe Weaver'sEXCELLENT video of the recent Barn Bash rally. So fun to watch and re-live that weekend adventure!Great job, Joe!! Thanks so much for your expert skills and hard work putting that together!

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear, tho many of us were fuzzy headed due to the root beerschnaaps from the evening before and.....ANTS! ANTS! ANTS! We had been forwarned of thepossibility of an invasion, but at least they had the courtesy to wait until during the night to take upresidence in our coaches and make themselves at home!

Following another great breakfast of muffins, fruit, eggs, and left over fried chicken, it was time to wisheach other a safe trip home. Kudos to our rally hosts, Mike and Fran, Bobbie and Gene, for a fantasticjob! We all know how much planning and work you put into this rally and we're so appreciative! Anda huge thank you to Fran's sister Suzie, who was working right alongside, ensuring that we were all welltaken care of.

On a side note, so happy that, after some health issues, Ellen and Ray Gandola were well enough toparticipate! and we hope your daughter continues to regain her health, as well. Welcome back to Brianand Joy Tripp; glad your GMC brakes failed in your driveway and not on the road! Happy you still madethe effort to join us! So glad Joanne and Phil Hernandez were able to attend after all and we hopeJoanne and Eileens's nephew continues to improve after his car accident. Positive thoughts and prayersfor Danny McCurter, Dave Cantrell, and Suzanne Covington in your quests for better health. We expectto hear great news and see you all thriving in the year to come!

Until the next rally....Happy travelling!

THE GMC PACIFIC CRUISERS TEMECULA BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL

MARCH 20,21 and 22, 2015 Hosted by Len and Pat Novak 760-731-0751,

[email protected]

Directions: From the I/15 in Temecula exit Hwy. 79 South. Go west

one block to Old Town Front Street. Turn right on Front Street to

just before Santiago Street. We will camp in the same site as last

year. On the left just to the south of Santiago Street.

JOIN IN THE FUN! This will be a dry camp weekend in

a dirt lot but that will just get you in the mood for some

great bluegrass musicians who perform FREE on the

street corners and at stages set up at various locations in

Old Town Temecula. This year’s performers are sure to

include some of your favorites. If you play a fiddle or

other bluegrass instrument, bring them so you can jam

with groups on the corners. We will be within walking

distance of all the action. An indoor Saturday night

concert is available. Tickets are $20.00.

Swap meet Saturday 12:00 – 3:00

Tech session (Miguel) 3:00 – 4:30

We only have 40 sites available so registration will be

first come, first served and then we will start a waiting

list to fill in for cancellations. Arrive any time after

11am Friday, leave late Sunday afternoon. You can

spend Thurs, or Sun night at the campsite at $15.00 per

night extra. There is no clubhouse available but we will

again have the “Crepe Guy” for breakfast Saturday and

a continental breakfast Sunday similar last year’s menu.

Pizza and salad on Friday (maybe) and great Mexican

food (maybe) on Saturday night. You can treat yourselves to one of the great local restaurants in

Old Town or fend for yourselves in your coach for lunches. Check out the website at Old Town

Temecula Bluegrass Festival for local restaurants and more information on the festival.

--------------------------------------Cut here and return-----------------------------------------------------------

Registrations must be received by March 9, 2015. Any cancellations after that date may not receive a full refund.
