ERNIE KENT IN FIRST SEASON WITH THE COUGARS: Veteran head coach and former Fox Sports and Pac-12 Net-works basketball analyst was named the 18th head coach in WSU mens basketball history, March 31, 2014, replacing Ken Bone, who served as the Cougar head coach for ! ve seasons. Kent came to Pullman with a 325-254 (.561) mark as a head coach, having spent six seasons at the helm for Saint Marys in Moraga, Calif., and 13 at Oregon. In his 13 years at Oregon, Kent compiled a 235-174 (.575) re-cord and a 109-125 (.466) conference mark. His 109 conference wins rank 17th most in Pac-12 history (including Paci! c-8 and Paci! c-10 Conferences). While at Oregon, Kent led the Ducks to seven postseason appearances, including ! ve NCAA Tournament Appearances (2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008) as well as a Pac-10 regular-sea-son (2002) and two conference tournament (2003, 2007) titles.

COUGARS VERSUS HUSKIES: Sunday marks the 281st all-time meeting between Wash-ington State and Washington, as the Huskies hold a 178-102 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams split last seasons Pac-12 series with each team winning at home...WSU won the ! rst meeting this sea-son, 80-77, at Washington, Jan. 10. Last season WSU defeated UW, 72-67 at Beasley Coliseum, Feb. 1, 2014...UW followed with a 72-49 win over WSU, Feb. 28, 2014.

Washington has won seven of the last nine meetings, inclu-ing two of the last three at Beasley Coliseum. Since 2005-06, the series is tied between the two teams at 11-11. In those 22 games, WSU holds a 5-4 advantage at home, the series at Seattle is tied at 5-5 and UW holds a 2-1 advantage in neutral-site meetings. During that time (since the 2005-06 season), 16 of the 22 games have been decided by 10 points or less, while 14 of the 22 have been decided by 7 points or less. Six of the last seven meetings have been decided by 5 points per less, including this seasons ! rst meeting. The two teams ! rst met 105 years ago as UW defeated WSU, 13-9, Feb. 16, 1910.WSU head coach Ernie Kent holds an 11-17 record against Washington as a head coach.

WSUS PAC-12 WINS: Earlier this season WSU won three-straight Pac-12 games with victories at Cal (Jan. 4) and Washington (Jan. 10) and at home against Oregon (Jan. 15). With the win Jan. 4, the Cougars won their ! rst Pac-12 road game in 15 tries and ! rst since the 2012-13 season. With its win Jan. 10 at Washington, WSU won two Pac-12 road games in a season for the ! rst time since the 2011-12 season. The win Jan. 10 also gave WSU its ! rst two-game confer-ence winning streak since the 2011-12 season. WSUs win against Oregon, Jan. 15, gave WSU its ! rst 3-1 Pac-12 start since the 2007-08 season...it is also the ! rst time since the 2008-09 season that WSU has won three-straight conference games. The Cougars 108 points in their overtime win over Oregon marked the most since scoring 114 against Grambling State, Dec. 29, 1998...it was the second-most in conference play, second to 111 points against Arizona in double overtime, March 2, 1995 and the ! rst time WSU reached the 100-point plateau since scoring 104 in overtime against Gonzaga, Dec. 7, 2002. With its 89-88 win over Stanford, Jan. 31 at Pullman, WSU notched its fourth Pac-12 win, bettering last years confer-ence win total by one and matching the Pac-12 wins total from 2012-13. WSUs 74-71 win over Arizona State, Feb. 13, gave WSU 5 conference wins, its most Pac-12 wins since 2011-12 (7). With at least 6 games remaining, WSU has also already bet-tered last seasons number of Pac-12 victories as this years squad has 11...the Cougars need just two more wins to match the win total from 2012-13 (13 wins).

  • 32014-15 WASHINGTON STATE BASKETBALL

Game 26 | Washington | Sunday, Feb. 22 | Beasley Coliseum (Pullman, Wash.)

HAWKINSON SOARING IN SECOND YEAR: Sophomore Josh Hawkinson is averaging 14.4 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in WSUs 25 games this season...hes playing 31.9 minutes per outing. Hawkinson had his ! rst double-double of his career in WSUs second game of the season at TCU and now has 15 double-doubles. Last season Hawkinson averaged just 1.2 points and 1.6 re-bounds a game in 6.4 minutes an outing, while compiling just 4 blocks the entire season. He is scoring 13.2 more points and grabbing 8.9 more re-bounds this year than last year and has already played 618 more minutes than he did all of last year, more than triple the 180 he played last year.

KERNICH-DREW FINDING HIS GROOVE: Redshirt senior Dexter Kernich-Drew has been hot for the Cougars over the last three games. In WSUs last three games (at Oregon - Feb. 8, against Arizo-na State - Feb. 13 and against No. 7 Arizona - Feb. 15), Kernich-Drew is averaging 21.7 points per game while shooting .533 (14-for-25) from beyond the 3-point arc. He has the most points by a Cougar in the last three games, 17 more total than DaVont Lacy in second. On top of his scoring, Kernich-Drew is tied for the lowest number of turnovers in those three games (two total) by a stu-dent-athlete that is averaging more than 5.0 minutes played per game over that stretch. In the 22 games prior, Kernich-Drew averaged just 3.8 points per game while shooting .362 (17-for-47) from the ! eld. Kernich-Drew has worked his way into second in the Pac-12 in conference games only with a .525 (21-for-40) 3-point clip and 14th for 3-point ! eld goals made with 1.6 made per game in league play.

ROAD WARRIORS: WSU opened up with a two-game road trip in the state of Texas, marking just the sixth time it has opened the season with a true road game outside the state of Washington and the ! rst time since Nov. 19, 1999, an 80-55 loss at Nevada. Washington State was the only Pac-12 school to open the 2014-15 season on the road. In fact, in the ! rst two weeks of the season (Friday, Nov. 14-Sun., Nov. 22), just ! ve true road games were played by Pac-12 schools, two of those were WSUs games. The ! ve road games dont include the seven neutral-site games. The Cougars had already played two road games before any other Pac-12 school had played on the road or at a neutral-site venue. Five of WSUs ! rst six games were away from Pullman, in-cluding three games at the Great Alaska Shootout, Nov. 27-29. WSU played seven games away from Pullman before it hosted its fourth home game of the season against San Jose State, Sunday, Dec. 21. The Cougars opened Pac-12 play with three-straight road games, including a second trip to the Bay Area to take on Stanford (Jan. 2) and California (Jan. 4), followed by a trip to Seattle to take on Washington (Jan. 10). WSUs experience on the road paid off as it got the ! rst Pac-12 conference road win this season and the only road win in the ! rst 12 Pac-12 games. With its victory at Cal, Jan. 4, WSU won its ! rst Pac-12 road game since the 2012-13 season, breaking a 15-game confer-ence road losing streak.

ABOUT THE COUGARS: The Cougars are currently 11-14 overall and 5-8 in Pac-12 play, currently tied for ninth place in the Pac-12. WSU is 2-9 on the road, 2-1 at neutral sites and 7-4 at home...WSUs game against Gonzaga counted as a road game, al-though played at Spokane Arena. Last season WSU ! nished 10-21 overall and 3-15 in Pac-12 play, ! nishing 11th. Senior DaVont Lacy is the only Cougar to start all 25 games so far this season. Lacy leads the team and ranks ! fth in the Pac-12 in scoring with 17.0 points per game, just over 2.0 points below his 19.4 ppg average last season. Lacy ranks seventh in the league with 2.2 made 3-pointers per game. Lacy ranks 13th in the conference for free throw percentage with a .752 (118-for-157) clip...he has made the second-most free throws in the Pac-12 this season. Sophomore Josh Hawkinson is averaging a double-double per game as he leads the Pac-12 with 10.5 rebounds per game and ranks 12th in scoring with 14.4 points per game. Hes ! rst in the league with 15 double-doubles and leads the league with 8.7 defensive rebounds per game. Hawkinson is seventh in the league with 1.3 blocked shots a game and ranks fourth in free throw percentage with an .843 (91-for-108) clip. Nationally, Hawkinson ranks in the top-12 in the following categories; hes second the nation in defensive rebounds per game, ! fth for double-doubles and 12th in rebounds per game (as of games Feb. 18). Freshman point guard Ny Redding has been a surprise for the Cougars as he has started 17 games this season. He leads the team and ranks seventh in the Pac-12 with 3.7 assists per game, ranking second-highest among all Pac-12 freshman for assists per game. Redding ranks eighth in the league with a 1.8 assist/turnover ratio...hes second amongst all Pac-12 freshmen. Senior Jordan Railey is tied for ninth in the league with 1.1 blocked shots per game and currently ranks 16th in WSUs career blocks record book with 57 blocks in just one and a half seasons.

LACY MARKING UP RECORD BOOKS: Senior DaVont Lacy is making his mark on the WSU record books. In the ! rst round of the 2014 Pac-12 Tournament, Lacy be-came the 34th Cougar to reach 1,000 career points, ending the season in 32nd with 1,023 points. He is the ninth-fastest Cougar to reach the milestone as he accomplished the feat in 85 games. Lacy has since moved into eighth on the list with 1,447 points and is 11 points away from Marcus Moore (2001-04) in sev-enth with 1,458 points. If Lacy stays at 17.0 ppg, he would ! nish with 1,550 points, which would put him at ! fth in WSUs record books. Lacy is also climbing up the record books for career 3-point-ers made and is on pace for the record, currently in sole pos-session of second with 235 made 3s. Lacy is just seven 3-pointers away from tying Klay Thomp-son for the school record (242)...if he were to stay healthy during his senior season, Lacy would need to average just over one made 3-pointer per game to reach the record...hes averaging 2.2 right now.

With the Jan. 10 win at Washington, the Cougars guaran-teed their ! rst two-win Pac-12 road season since 2011-12 and marked the ! rst time they won back-to-back Pac-12 road games since 2008-09. The Cougars have not won three total conference road games since the 2010-11 season when it won three Pac-10 road contests.

KLAY THOMPSON BECOMES SECOND COUGAR NAMED TO NBA ALL-STAR TEAM: Washington State mens basketball standout and current Golden State Warrior, Klay Thompson (2009-11), was to the the 2015 NBA Western Conference All-Star Team and started in the game that took place Feb. 15. Thompson became just the second WSU mens basketball player to make an NBA All-Star roster, joining James Don-aldson (1976-79) who made the team in 1988 while with the Dallas Mavericks. As of the opening day of the 2014-15 NBA season, 62 Pac-12 student-athletes were on NBA rosters...three of them were NBA All-Stars, in all, 24 All-Stars were named. James Harden (Arizona State) and Russell Westbrook (UCLA) are the other two, both also Western Conference reserves...Harden also started for the Western Conference team. Thompson scored 7 points and added 6 assists as the West-ern Conference defeated the Eastern Conference, 163-158. Thompson also particpated in the 3-point contest, ! nishing third as his Golden State teammate, Steph Curry, won the contest. In his fourth season after being the 11th overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft, Klay Thompson ranks ninth in the NBA in scoring with 18.9 points per game...he set an NBA record with 37 points in the third quarter of the Warriors game Jan. 23, ! nishing with 52 points.
