WAYNE TOWNSHIP PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Summer 2020  Dear Parents/Guardians,  Summer is the perfect time for students to visit far away places, use their imaginations, and broaden their horizons. Through books, students can achieve all of those things! As educators, we realize the importance of reading throughout the school year and would like to promote reading during the summer as a way for students to maintain reading levels and skills they have acquired during the school year. More importantly, we hope that by encouraging independent reading, students will experience the many joys of reading and become lifelong readers and learners.   We are pleased to present our 2020 elementary summer reading program. The format has been changed and is                                   designed to expose our young readers to a variety of books, formats, genres, authors, and series. Our ultimate                                   goal is for children to read and we do not want them to feel restricted by this list. Please be aware that the links                                               provided do not all provide access directly to the books! While some can be previewed on the site, books can be                                         borrowed from the library where available, found in our digital resource collection, or purchased. Please use this                                 list with the understanding that it is not an all-inclusive list. Your child should feel free to choose other books if                                         they prefer.   If your child selects a book that seems challenging, read it together. Research shows that independent recreational reading and sharing the experience with someone who cares increases literacy skills dramatically. If your child selects a book that seems too easy, encourage them to read it anyway. Doing so will build both fluency and confidence. As your child reads, encourage him/her to make predictions, ask questions, or compare the story to another (s)he has read.

New for this year is a list of books we hope you and your child(ren) might read together. Children often worry                                         about things, just as adults do. Remote learning and social distancing proved challenging and stirred up a variety                                   of emotions in all of us. To help young children develop strategies to cope with feelings of anxiety, or deal with                                         stressful situations, consider reading one or more of the books listed on the last page with your child.  In order to receive a certificate of participation in September, your child must complete the grade level assignment                                   indicated in the booklet, and return it on the first day of school. The assignments correspond to your child’s grade                                       in September 2020. Please note that incoming kindergarten students are not expected to complete a summer                               reading assignment, but book suggestions are provided in this packet.  As always, we partner with the Wayne Public Library and will accept their reading log as an alternative to our                                       log.    Wishing you a wonderful reading-filled summer!

Dawn Auerbach Dawn Auerbach Director of Elementary Education

Books to Read Together With Your Child(ren)

Children often worry about things, just as adults do. Remote learning and social distancing proved challenging and stirred up a variety of emotions in all of us. To help young children develop strategies to cope with feelings of anxiety, or deal with stressful situations, consider reading one or more of these books with your child: After the Fall by Dan Santat Come with Me by Holly M. McGhee I Am Peace by Susan Verde Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwell Moody Cow Meditates by Kerry Lee MacLean My Magic Breath by Nick Ortner and Alison Taylor Peaceful Piggy Meditation by Kerry Lee MacLean Quiet by Tomie dePaola Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt The Thing Lou Couldn’t Do by Ashley Spires The Worry Box by Suzanne Chiew The Worry Tree by Marianne Musgrove The Worry Woo Monster Series by Andy Green Wally the Worry Warthog by Barbara Shook Hazen
