2014 OverviewFrom the Board ChairIn this annual report, you will find the strong, important, underlying spine—the data and accomplishments—of our organization in 2014. If you attended a “What’s for Dinner?” program, visited our Aurora! exhibit or searched our website for, say, information on wolves in Africa, you also came to taste the meat on the bones of the science-based International Wolf Center.
If you are a member, however, you also know the heart and soul of the real wolf through your member benefit, our International Wolf magazine. While you browse the pages of this 2014 Annual Report, I invite you to also download and explore (www.wolf.org/wolf-info/wolf-magazine) a few of these articles. Personal encounters, wolf politics and smart, basic information like the following fill the pages of International Wolf:
• From the Spring 2014 issue: Now What? Two Views Address the Declining Wolf Population at Isle Royale. In a continuing controversy, renowned wolf biologists discuss whether this vanishing wolf population should be saved by human intervention.
• From the Summer 2014 issue: What’s Killing the Deer? A soaring Wisconsin deer population suddenly seems to crash, and hunters point to wolves as the perpetrators. But what is the real story?
• From the Fall 2014 issue: In Memory of Shadow. Two of the Center’s elder ambassador wolves, brothers Shadow and Malik, died in 2014. Those who cared for the wolves since they were pups talk about these magnificent creatures in International Wolf.
I hope that you will join us—as members, donors and regular readers of this magazine—as we learn more about the wolf at home and around the world. We can’t wait to share it with you.

Education / Outreach• The very popular Wild Kids Discovery program was added to the summer
offerings as a way to engage younger children in wolf education.
• Technology improvements for the Wolflink videoconferencing program made it easier for our guests to access.
• A partnership with the Minnesota Zoo and their Distance Learning Department allowed us to showcase our Wolflink programs to teachers at conferences such as the October MEA conference.
• The stunning Aurora! Journey Through the Midnight Sky was the subject of our Special Exhibit. Northern lights photographer Heidi Pinkerton supplied us with images for the exhibit and we featured her work in our photographic gallery.

Wolf Care• Plans were put in place to broadcast live webinars from the wolf enclosure,
allowing people to observe the wolves from the comfort of their own homes.
• Despite Luna’s early medical issues, she matured into an active adult showing only minor issues of mobility and continues to outcompete her larger male packmates.
• Boltz retains some shyness in the exhibit, but he has bonded with Denali and gains some confidence from that association.
• It was a very somber year for the board, staff and friends of the Center as both Shadow and Malik declined rapidly due to cancer during 2014. Malik was euthanized on March 22, 2014 and Shadow was euthanized on July 2, 2014.
Membership / Development• Give to the Max/Give to the Wolves Day 2014 raised $74,976, beating the prior
year’s total. This one-day giving event in November continues to be the largest fundraising day of the year.
• Ninety-four people helped raise $19,736 at the first ever Howl at the Moon Gala.
• The Alpha Weekend held in September is a fun gathering of Alpha Legacy members (those who include the International Wolf Center in their estate plans) and annual Alpha members (those who have given $1,000 or more). Exclusive educational programs and time spent enjoying the ambassador wolves boosted spirits and excitement for the important work of wolf education worldwide.
• Beautiful ambassador wolf coins, collector’s pin, exclusive ambassador wolf photos and ambassador wolf plaster paw prints were very popular as the new member appreciation items for the Associate, Tracker, Sponsor and Alpha level members.
• The addition of 368 new members brought our year-end membership total to 4,567.
