Our goal at UBC Alumni Affairs is to connect you with theuniversity and your fellow grads by providing you with programsand services that enrich your life and add value to your degree.Alumni Travel programs connect you with fellow alumni as youexperience the world.

Dear Alumni and Friends:

“Everything wears an aspect of unreality,” Ernest Shackleton wrote. “Icebergs hangupside-down in the sky, the land appears as layers of silvery or golden cloud, cloud bankslook like land, and icebergs masquerade as islands.” This is Antarctica, Earth’s last frontier.Normal human scales and reference points disappear amid the fantastically shapedicebergs, penguin rookeries and breaching whales. This is nature in its most pristine form.

Few travelers have followed the adventuresome explorers Shackleton, Amundsenand Scott to the Antarctic. Today, we are proud to introduce a spectacular itinerary tothis untouched wilderness aboard the exclusively chartered, deluxe M.S. LE BOREAL,a state-of-the-art vessel launched in May 2010. Raising the small ship cruise experienceto new heights, M.S. LE BOREAL is the finest vessel cruising the Antarctic waters, combining innovative design with personalized service in a welcoming and intimatesetting and featuring private balconies in 95% of the deluxe, outside accommodations.

To enhance your Antarctic experience, M.S. LE BOREAL is staffed with an expertexpedition team of naturalists who will guide you on excursions ashore. Under theirdirection, you will board sturdy Zodiac craft for landings on rocky shores and beachesto observe the antics of Antarctica’s bountiful wildlife—penguins and seals, especially, are unafraid of human visitors—and discover the secrets of the White Continent.

Experience Antarctica now in its unspoiled state. You will sail during the lingeringlight of the austral summer, when long sunrises paint the icescape in soft shades ofpink and gold as whales, seals and penguins flock to glimmering turquoise glaciers andsparkling icebergs. This itinerary has sold out year after year! Space is limited, so I urgeyou to place your reservation soon, before July 23, 2010, while Early Booking Savingsare still available!

CRUISING ANTARCTICASunday, February 20 toThursday, February 24The ship cruises below the 60th parallel tothe outer shores and islands of theAntarctic Peninsula, the world’s last frontier. Here, explore Earth’s most pristine wilderness, where towering mountains of ice and lavacreate abrupt coastlines and islands, andconstantly changing patterns of ice stretch asfar as the eye can see. In this seemingly harshenvironment, a vast array of wildlife flourishes, including millions of penguins, countlessseabirds and thousands of seals and whales. From spectacular volcanic topography andmajestic glaciers to fascinating wildlife andhistoric outposts, this itinerary incorporatesthe following destinations for the completeAntarctica experience.

Please note that the ship’s cruising pattern anddestinations are dependent on weather, iceand sea conditions and are subject to change.

One of the smallest but most beautifulSouth Shetland Islands, Half Moon Island isa crescent-shaped isle known for its craggyvolcanic rock formations and tranquil lagoons. It is also the site of Camara Station, a basestaffed by Argentine biologists monitoringregional wildlife. Observe the antics ofthe island’s colony of chinstrap penguinsand enjoy the lingering twilight of theAntarctic summer.

Deception Island is actually the rim ofa massive dormant volcano crater thatencircles a lake known as Port Foster. The ship enters Port Foster through dramaticNeptune’s Bellows, a sublime harbour ringedby snowcapped peaks and sheer cliffs. In Pendulum Cove, you may, conditionspermitting, have the opportunity to wade orswim in steaming, geothermally heated waters. On Baily Head, see a colony of one-quarterof a million chinstrap penguins. Then walkalong the black sand beaches of Telefon Bayto nearby craters, which offer fascinatinginsight into the volcanic activity that createdthe island and played a pivotal role in thenatural history of the region.

In Paradise Bay, awesome cliffs of ice descendfrom the surrounding mountains into thefloating iceberg–laden waters along thewestern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.Named by 19th-century whalers who soughtshelter in its coves, Paradise Bay is an idealsanctuary for marine wildlife includinghumpback whales, crabeater seals andCape petrels. Listen for the low rumbling ofRudolf Glacier as it calves chunks of ice intoNeko Harbour, one of the most dramatic andspectacular sights in Antarctica. Named for anearly 20th-century floating whaling factory, the harbour is surrounded by soaring glaciersand snow-covered mountains. Here, makeyour first “continental landing” in Antarctica.

Cruise through breathtaking, glacier-linedNeumayer Channel to Port Lockroy.Originally constructed in 1944 by aneight-man team as an intelligence post for

In contrast to sociable Adélie penguins, who congregate in large colonies, the leopard seal cherishes hissolitude and independence.

Page 5: 2 0 1 0 E L P 3 , G S U O 2 G C L Y INNIN I N R E J U ......exclusive three-night extension to one of Earth’s most exquisite natural wonders, majestic Iguazú Falls—275 spectacular

British espionage during World War II,Port Lockroy was converted into a whalingstation and scientific base in the 1950s.It is nestled among glistening mountainpeaks as high as 1,800 metres, and thesurrounding grounds are populated byblue-eyed shags and gentoo penguins.Gain insight into the lives of past explorersat the British Antarctic Survey Museum andsend a postcard with an Antarctica postmarkfrom the official British Post Office.

Just off of Port Lockroy, enjoy an excursionto the rocky shores of Jougla Point onWiencke Island. Experience this rareopportunity to view the nearly intactskeleton of a large whale, and also see largenumbers of gentoo penguins and birdlife, particularly blue-eyed shags and kelp gulls.

Flanked by sheer cliffs of towering glaciersbetween the Antarctic Peninsula andBooth Island, Lemaire Channel offers viewsof 11 majestic kilometres of mountains andwildlife combined with fascinating patternsof ice floes. Call at Petermann Island, thesouthernmost point of your journey, andwatch its thriving rookeries of Adélie andgentoo penguins and blue-eyed shags.Enter the Weddell Sea and spot the enormoustabular icebergs that have broken off fromthe Larsen Ice Shelf. See Brown Bluff’s

745-metre-high, rust-coloured cliffs juttinginto the Antarctic Sound, and land on theshelving beach at the base of the bluff.Observe friendly members of the area’sflourishing colony of Adélie penguins, whomay approach you for an up-close encounter.

CRUISING DRAKE PASSAGEFriday, February 25Relax and reflect onboard today as the shipturns north and crosses the Drake Passage.

DRAKE PASSAGE/CAPE HORNSaturday, February 26Enjoy lively, informative discussionswith the ship’s naturalists. Watch forseabirds and whales as you cruise acrossthe Antarctic Convergence and past theinfamous Cape Horn, the southernmosttip of South America. Attend theCaptain’s farewell reception this evening.

USHUAIA/BUENOS AIRESSunday, February 27Disembark and fly to Buenos Aires. Yourreturn flight to Canada departs this evening.

CANADAMonday, February 28Arrive early this morning in Canada.

CANADA AND ANTARCTIC

EXPLORATION

The intrepid adventures of famed Europeanexplorers Roald Amundsen, Robert FalconScott and Ernest Shackleton have long beenrecounted in gripping personal tales and historybooks. Less known, however, is that Canadiansalso played a significant role in the explorationof Antarctica, particularly Sir Charles SeymourWright, physicist, glaciologist and assistant tothe meteorologist on Scott’s ill-fated expeditionto the South Pole. Persuaded into joining Scott’ssecond expedition (1910-1913), Wright barelysurvived his first encounter with the Antarcticand was one of the last people to see Scott alive. In mid-November 1912, Wright located thefrozen remains of Scott and two other membersof his South Pole party. A dedicated scientist,Wright went on to lead the team responsible forthe early development of radar. Returning toCanada in 1947, subsequent scientific researchbrought him back to the Antarctic. It was duringhis last tour in 1965 that he flew along WrightValley, named in his honour in 1959. After hisdeath in 1975, Wright’s ashes were consignedto the sea off Esquimalt, from the deck of theCanadian destroyer HMCS Restigouche.
