1st year induction: PC-workshop
During this workshop you will be required to complete 10 tasks each of which illustrates a
particular skill or resource that you will need in the year ahead.
TASK 1: Switch on the pc and enter your login details. These were sent to the personal email
address you have registered with the University. If necessary retrieve via smart phone.
TASK 2
From the start menu open a web browser (such as Firefox or Chrome) and navigate to the University Home page (www.uwe.ac.uk). Click on “Students” at the top of the screen. You will then land on this page.
Select myUWE and enter your login details:

You should then arrive at the following screen (or something similar)
myUWE is your portal for information that you might receive during the course of the year.
It provides access to Course materials (Blackboard), e-mail and your Timetable. It will also
provide links to assessment deadlines and examination timetables. Notification of
announcements that tutors post on Blackboard will appear here.

TASK 3
Click on the “Timetable” tab
Clicking on “Options” will allow you to access a link by which you can easily import your timetable into other calendars (such as google calendars). From “Week(s)”, select Full Academic Year and then click on Change View
This is an old 2011/12 Semester 1 timetable for Kevin Golden, used as it gives examples of
lots of different types of activities. You will see something similar. Look at the timetable for
the level 1 module “Problem Solving”. You will see the following information: “Module

Code”, “Activity Code: e.g. P1/01”, “Description: e.g. Computer Practical”, “Room: e.g.
1N10”, “When activity takes place: bottom right hand corner gives week numbers: Induction
week is week 8” and of course All classes typically start on the hour
TASK 4 Navigate back to myUWE and now click on the “Courses” tab. From the available courses,
select BSc Mathematics or BSc Mathematics and Statistics as appropriate.

Spend a few minutes looking at the different folders – We’re still getting the site ready for
next week, but most of the features are in place.
TASK 5
Click on the “Courses” tab and select UFMFPA-30-1 Statistical Reasoning, one of the
modules that are available to you. All modules will be there at the start of teaching. If you
cannot see any course at present, don’t worry, it simply means that your registration has
not yet been processed on the system.
Click on “Contacts” and you will see a motley pair.
Other tabs will be populated in due course.

Logout of Blackboard select UWE home page www.uwe.ac.uk
Select Students from the menu at the top of the site.
As you can see, this page contains links to a variety of different information sources. Today we are going to look at Academic advice so click on that link.

Now select Academic assessments and look at the “FAQs”. TASK 7 You will see a link to Student Support Advisers. Follow this link and locate the Information Points on Frenchay Campus.

TASK 8 We are now going to navigate back to the UWE home page and from here find the University learning support pages.
Use the back page keys to navigate back to the UWE home page. Then select “Students” followed by ““Study support” (need to scroll down), then “Study skills”.

TASK 10 In EDM we have our own IT support located in Q-Block (2Q33). It is usually worth going to this helpdesk as you first port of call to resolve any problems. We are going to navigate to the FET IT support pages. The easiest way to access these pages is to open a web browser and type in the URL http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/supportweb
